Effects of growth temperature and nitrogen nutrition on expression of C3-C4 intermediate traits in Chenopodium album

Proto-Kranz plants represent an initial phase in the evolution from C₃ to C₃-C₄ intermediate to C₄ plants. The ecological and adaptive aspects of C₃-C₄ plants would provide an important clue to understand the evolution of C₃-C₄ plants. We investigated whether growth temperature and nitrogen (N) nutrition influence the expression of C₃-C₄ traits in Chenopodium album (proto-Kranz) in comparison with Chenopodium quinoa (C₃). Plants were grown during 5 weeks at 20 or 30 °C under standard or low N supply levels (referred to as 20SN, 20LN, 30SN, and 30LN). Net photosynthetic rate and leaf N content were higher in 20SN and 30SN plants than in 20LN and 30LN plants of C. album but did not differ among growth conditions in C. quinoa. The CO₂ compensation point (Γ) of C. album was lowest in 30LN plants (36 µmol mol^-1), highest in 20SN plants (51 µmol mol^-1), and intermediate in 20LN and 30SN plants, whereas Γ of C. quinoa did not differ among the growth conditions (51-52 µmol mol^-1). The anatomical structure of leaves was not considerably affected by growth conditions in either species. However, ultrastructural observations in C. album showed that the number of mitochondria per mesophyll or bundle sheath (BS) cell was lower in 20LN and 30LN plants than in 20SN and 30SN plants. Immunohistochemical observations revealed that lower accumulation level of P-protein of glycine decarboxylase (GDC-P) in mesophyll mitochondria than in BS mitochondria is the major factor causing the decrease in Γ values in C. album plants grown under low N supply and high temperature. These results suggest that high growth temperature and low N supply lead to the expression of C₃-C₄ traits (the reduction of Γ) in the proto-Kranz plants of C. album through the regulation of GDC-P expression.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm associated with Marfan's syndrome--report of a case

A case of Marfan's syndrome associated with thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm and mitral regurgitation in a 29 year old male is reported herein. The aneurysm was replaced with a Y-shaped graft using Crawford's technique, while the major branches of the abdominal aorta were separately cannulated from inside the aneurysm and perfused via partial extracorporeal circulation using a left femoro-femoral bypass. We found this technique useful in the prevention of tissue ischemia during the operation. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful and he has encountered no problems in the year and half since his operation.

[201Tl-reverse redistribution in a case with stunned myocardium]

A 58-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of chest pain. Electrocardiogram showed giant negative T waves in leads I, II, III, aVl, aVf and V2 through V6. Echocardiogram showed anterior wall motion abnormality. Rest-redistribution thallium scan obtained 3 days after admission revealed reverse redistribution in antero-apical area. Coronary angiogram showed no significant stenotic lesions and left ventriculogram in chronic stage showed improvement of wall motion abnormality. Repeat thallium scan in chronic stage showed disappearance of perfusion defect in apical area. It was difficult to diagnose myocardial viability in our case with stunned myocardium because rest-redistribution thallium scan showed reverse redistribution. As the mechanism of this finding, early coronary recanalization in acute stage of the event was suspected.

Pyrroxamycin, a new antibiotic taxonomy, fermentation, isolation, structure determination and biological properties

A strain of streptomycete was found to produce a new antibiotic pyrroxamycin. This compound was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. S46506. The chemical structure was determined to be 4,5-dichloro-2-(6',8'-dichloro-4'H-1',3'-benzodioxin-4'-yl)-3-nitr opyrrole by its chemical character and 1H and 13C NMR spectral analysis. Pyrroxamycin was active against Gram-positive bacteria and dermatophytes.

Azinomycins A and B, new antitumor antibiotics. I. Producing organism, fermentation, isolation, and characterization

A strain of Streptomyces griseofuscus S42227 (FERM P-8443) was found to produce new antitumor antibiotics, called azinomycins A and B. The molecular formulas of azinomycins A and B were determined as C30H33N3O10 and C31H33N3O11, respectively. They were active against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and L5178Y cells in tissue culture.

Actinopyrones A, B and C, new physiologically active substances. II. Physico-chemical properties and chemical structures

The structure of physiologically active substances, actinopyrones A, B and C, produced by Streptomyces pactum S12538 were determined on the basis of their spectral and chemical character. These substances were structurally related to piericidin A1.

A strain of Streptomyces was found to produce new physiologically active substances. The active compounds were purified and separated into three substances named actinopyrones A, B and C. Actinopyrones exhibited coronary vasodilating activities in anesthetized dogs and weakly antimicrobial activities against some Gram-positive bacteria and dermatophytes.
