Nitrogen Incorporation in Potassic and Micro- and Meso-Porous Minerals: Potential Biogeochemical Records and Targets for Mars Sampling. ASTROBIOLOGY 2022; 22:1293-1309. Abstract
We measured the N concentrations and isotopic compositions of 44 samples of terrestrial potassic and micro- and meso-porous minerals and a small number of whole-rocks to determine the extent to which N is incorporated and stored during weathering and low-temperature hydrothermal alteration in Mars surface/near-surface environments. The selection of these minerals and other materials was partly guided by the study of altered volcanic glass from Antarctica and Iceland, in which the incorporation of N as NH4+ in phyllosilicates is indicated by correlated concentrations of N and the LILEs (i.e., K, Ba, Rb, Cs), with scatter likely related to the presence of exchanged, occluded/trapped, or encapsulated organic/inorganic N occurring within structural cavities (e.g., in zeolites). The phyllosilicates, zeolites, and sulfates analyzed in this study contain between 0 and 99,120 ppm N and have δ15Nair values of -34‰ to +65‰. Most of these minerals, and the few siliceous hydrothermal deposits that were analyzed, have δ15N consistent with the incorporation of biologically processed N during low-temperature hydrothermal or weathering processes. Secondary ion mass spectrometry on altered hyaloclastites demonstrates the residency of N in smectites and zeolites, and silica. We suggest that geological materials known on Earth to incorporate and store N and known to be abundant at, or near, the surface of Mars should be considered targets for upcoming Mars sample return with the intent to identify any signs of ancient or modern life.

Abstract
In Earth's deep continental subsurface, where groundwaters are often isolated for >106 to 109 years, energy released by radionuclides within rock produces oxidants and reductants that drive metabolisms of non-photosynthetic microorganisms. Similar processes could support past and present life in the martian subsurface. Sulfate-reducing microorganisms are common in Earth's deep subsurface, often using hydrogen derived directly from radiolysis of pore water and sulfate derived from oxidation of rock-matrix-hosted sulfides by radiolytically derived oxidants. Radiolysis thus produces redox energy to support a deep biosphere in groundwaters isolated from surface substrate input for millions to billions of years on Earth. Here, we demonstrate that radiolysis by itself could produce sufficient redox energy to sustain a habitable environment in the subsurface of present-day Mars, one in which Earth-like microorganisms could survive wherever groundwater exists. We show that the source localities for many martian meteorites are capable of producing sufficient redox nutrients to sustain up to millions of sulfate-reducing microbial cells per kilogram rock via radiolysis alone, comparable to cell densities observed in many regions of Earth's deep subsurface. Additionally, we calculate variability in supportable sulfate-reducing cell densities between the martian meteorite source regions. Our results demonstrate that martian subsurface groundwaters, where present, would largely be habitable for sulfate-reducing bacteria from a redox energy perspective via radiolysis alone. We present evidence for crustal regions that could support especially high cell densities, including zones with high sulfide concentrations, which could be targeted by future subsurface exploration missions.

Abstract
The vacuum and thermal environment of airless planetary surfaces, particularly those dominated by a particulate regolith such as the Moon and asteroids, produces intense near-surface thermal gradients that can substantially alter their thermal emissivity spectra when compared with spectra collected at ambient terrestrial conditions. Therefore, spectroscopic measurements acquired under conditions designed to simulate the radiation environment in which remote measurements of airless bodies are made should be used as the basis for interpreting those data. As a foundation for this goal, we report the radiometric calibration of thermal infrared emission data collected with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer integrated with the custom Asteroid and Lunar Environment Chamber (ALEC) at Brown University. This chamber is designed to simulate the environment of airless planetary bodies by evacuating the atmospheric gasses to vacuum (<10-4 mbar), cooling the chamber with a flow of liquid nitrogen, heating the base and sides of samples with temperature-controlled sample cups, and heating the top of samples with an external light source. We present a new method for deriving sample emissivity based on the absolute radiometry properties of our system, focusing on the 400-2000 cm-1 wavenumber range. This method produces calibrated radiance spectra from calibration targets, and particulate samples and those spectra are used to derive emissivity spectra. We demonstrate that the ALEC system and data reduction methods successfully replicate independently determined spectral properties of particulate samples under both ambient and cold, vacuum conditions. The ALEC system is shown to be capable of supporting ongoing and future planetary exploration of airless surfaces by facilitating careful investigation of meteorites, lunar samples, and planetary materials at an array of environmental conditions.

Abstract
SummaryThe effects of plasmin have been examined because platelets may be exposed to plasmin in vivo and treatment of platelets with plasmin shortens platelet survival. Rabbit plasmin was prepared by urokinase activation of plasminogen immobilized on lysine- Sepharose. Plasmin caused rabbit platelets to aggregate and release the contents of their amine storage granules, but aggregation was slower than in response to ADP or thrombin. EDTA, prostaglandin E1, or creatine phosphate/creatine phosphokinase were inhibitory, but indomethacin was not. Deaggregation did not occur when platelets had been aggregated by a concentration of plasmin that caused extensive release of granule contents. EDTA or prostaglandin E1 caused deaggregation. Low concentrations of ADP and plasmin acted synergistically in causing platelet aggregation. Plasmin decreased the amounts of platelet membrane glycoproteins that stained with periodic acid-Schiff reagent; glycoprotein I was more susceptible than glycoproteins II and III. Concentrations of plasmin that induced the release of amine storage granule contents also released PAS- staining granule gylcoproteins.Platelets incubated with plasmin, washed and resuspended, were not aggregated by ADP, but were aggregated strongly by the combination of fibrinogen and ADP, and bound 125I-fibrinogen to a greater extent than untreated platelets. Platelets preincubated with a high concentration of plasmin were unresponsive to thrombin, but were sometimes aggregated by fibrinogen.Plasmin decreased the buoyant density and increased the median size of platelets. Thus plasmin, as well as ADP and thrombin, may contribute to the density shift observed in platelets from rabbits in which thrombosis and continuous vessel injury have been induced.

SummaryEicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) inhibits platelet responsiveness to aggregating agents. To investigate the reactions that are affected by EPA, we examined the effect of preincubating aspirintreated rabbit platelets with EPA on stimulation of inositol phosphate formation in response to the TXA2 analogue U46619. Stimulation of platelets with U46619 (0.5 μM) caused aggregation and slight release of dense granule contents; aggregation and release were inhibited by preincubation of the platelets with EPA (50 μM) for 1 h followed by washing to remove unincorporated EPA. Incubation with EPA (50 μM) for 1 h did not cause a detectable increase in the amount of EPA in the platelet phospholipids. When platelets were prelabelled with [3H]inositol stimulation with U46619 of control platelets that had not been incubated with EPA significantly increased the labelling of mos1tol phosphates. The increases in inositol phosphate labelling due to U46619 at 10 and 60 s were partially inhibited by premcubat10n of the platelets with 50 μM EPA. Since the activity of cyclo-oxygenase was blocked with aspirin, inhibition of inositol phosphate labelling in response to U46619 indicates either that there may be inhibition of signal transduction without a detectable change in the amount of EPA in platelet phospholipids, that changes in signal transduction require only minute changes in the fatty acid composition of membrane phospholipids, or that after a 1 h incubation with EPA, activation of phospholipase C is affected by a mechanism that is not directly related to incorporation of EPA.

Abstract
SummaryThe mechanisms involved in platelet aggregation induced by epinephrine are unclear. Although epinephrine does not aggregate washed rabbit platelets, platelets made refractory to ADP will aggregate in response to epinephrine in the presence of ADP. We have examined whether the mechanism(s) by which epinephrine induces aggregation of refractory platelets involves fibrinogen binding and Ca2+ association. With normal platelets, ADP causes aggregation, fibrinogen binding and Ca2+ association in a medium containing 0.2 mM 45Ca2+. After 3 min of incubation with ADP, fibrinogen dissociates from platelets, but 45Ca2+ does not. Epinephrine alone does not cause aggregation, fibrinogen binding or 45Ca2+ association. Platelets that are refractory to ADP do not aggregate and bind fibrinogen upon addition of ADP, but aggregate and bind fibrinogen in response to epinephrine, provided ADP is still present. These effects of epinephrine are mediated by the α-adrenergic receptor since they are blocked by phentolamine or verapamil and potentiated by propranolol. However, epinephrine-induced aggregation of platelets refractory to ADP does not involve further detectable increase in the amount of 45Ca2+ associated with the platelets.

SummaryRabbit aortae were removed from exsanguinated rabbits, washed, everted on probes, treated with thrombin, washed to remove unbound thrombin and used to measure the accumulation of 51Cr-labeled platelets in vitro. Thrombin pretreatment of normal rabbit aortae did not cause platelet accumulation on the endothelium; platelets appeared to accumulate only at sites where the subendothelium had been exposed. The quantitative data obtained with 51Cr-labelled platelets was reinforced by observations by scanning electron microscopy. 125I-labelled thrombin became associated with the endothelium and also with de- endothelialized vessels, and some of it could be displaced by high concentrations of heparin. Exposure of vessels to heparin after thrombin treatment eliminated the enhanced platelet accumulation caused by the thrombin treatment, probably because heparin displaced thrombin from the aortae, as demonstrated in experiments with 125I-thrombin. Inhibition of PGI2 production by aspirin treatment of the vessels did not enhance platelet accumulation on normal or thrombin-treated aortae. Thus, although thrombin treatment of the endothelium does not cause platelets to adhere to it, thrombin does cause increased platelet accumulation on the areas where the subendothelium is exposed or where endothelial cells are damaged.

Washed platelets from rabbits or humans aggregated by ADP can be deaggregated by EDTA or PGI2 if the release reaction has not occurred; during deaggregation 125I-fibrinogen dissociates from the platelets. Human platelets suspended in a medium without calcium undergo the release reaction during ADP-induced aggregation; EDTA, PGE, or PGI2 do not deaggregate these platelets although EDTA displaces much of the 125I-fibrinogen that associates with them during aggregation. Rabbit platelets aggregated by low concentrations of releaseinducing stimuli (sodium arachidonate, collagen or thrombin) can be deaggregated by EDTA, PGI2 or PGE1 and 125I-fibrinogen dissociates from them; with high concentrations of collagen or thrombin, deaggregation and dissociation of l25I-fibrinogen is slower. Human platelets that have undergone the release reaction in response to thrombin, collagen or a combination of sodium arachidonate and ADP are not readily deaggregated by EDTA or PGE1. Since aggregation and fibrinogen binding involving the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex are readily reversed by EDTA, and since Ca2+ is required for thrombospondin binding to activated platelets, there may be a third type of platelet-platelet adherence that is not disrupted by EDTA; this type of binding plays a greater role with human than with rabbit platelets.

SummaryWashed human platelets aggregated by ADP can be deaggregated by EDTA or PGE1; provided the release reaction does not occur; when the release reaction occurs platelets deaggregate less readily. Platelets treated with chymotrypsin are aggregated by fibrinogen indicating that fibrinogen receptors may be permanently exposed by this treatment. Fibrinogen-induced aggregation of chymotrypsin-treated platelets provides another method of bringing platelets into close contact with each other. Although EDTA deaggregated chymotrypsin-treated platelets aggregated by fibrinogen in a medium containing a physiological concentration of Ca2+, EDTA did not deaggregate these platelets if they were in a medium without calcium in which the release reaction occurs. In this medium, when ASA was added to prevent the release reaction, EDTA caused deaggregation. More fibrinogen associated with platelets in the medium without calcium than in the calcium-containing medium. In both media, EDTA displaced approximately half of the fibrinogen indicating that deaggregation is not solely dependent on dissociation of fibrinogen from its receptors. Thus when platelets undergo the release reaction, a form of platelet-to-platelet adhesion occurs that is not disrupted by chelation of divalent cations and is therefore not likely to involve only fibrinogen or thrombospondin and fibrinogen since the association of fibrinogen with its receptor requires Ca2+ and the binding of thrombospondin to platelets that have undergone the release reaction is also dependent on Ca2+.

Abstract
SummaryHuman platelets that have undergone the release reaction do not deaggregate readily. We examined conditions under which washed human platelets can be deaggregated after they have undergone an extensive release reaction induced by thrombin (1 or 5 U/ml). To make fibrinogen receptors unavailable, either CP/ CPK (or apyrase) was used to remove released ADP, or PGEi was used to increase cAMP. Chymotrypsin was used to digest proteins that might link platelets, and heparin to interact with released proteins and interfere with their binding to platelets and to each other. Individually, none of these caused deaggregation; heparin did not inhibit the effect of thrombin because no antithrombin III was present. Platelets exposed to thrombin (1 U/ ml) which was neutralized at 90 sec by hirudin, could be deaggregated by combinations of CP/CPK (or apyrase) and chymotrypsin, or PGE1 and chymotrypsin. When a higher concentration of thrombin was used (5 U/ml) these combinations caused platelets to deaggregate only when heparin was added before thrombin induced the release reaction. Thus, when extensive release occurs three mechanisms may come into play to link human platelets: one that requires the fibrinogen receptor; a heparin-sensitive reaction that may involve the binding of released proteins; and a linkage that can be disrupted only by proteolysis, providing the other two mechanisms are also inhibited.

SummaryThe effects of cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors on ADP-induced shape change and cAMP concentrations have been studied. Caffeine (10 mM), theophylline (8 mM), dipyridamole (0.2 mM), or papaverine (0.05 mM) prevented the shape change of washed rabbit platelets induced by 0.4 μM ADP. At these concentrations, none of these cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors increased 14C-cAMP in platelets in which the cytoplasmic adenine nucleotides had been labelled with 14C-adenine. By a protein binding assay, only papaverine by itself increased platelet cAMP above its basal level. These results indicate that two pools of cAMP may exist in platelets. Both methods showed that stimulation of platelet adenylate cyclase with PGE1 (1 μM) resulted in an increase in platelet cAMP and all these cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors potentiated this increase caused by PGE1. By themselves, some of these compounds may act through mechanisms that do not involve platelet cAMP. The effects of these cAMP phosphodiesterase inhibitors on platelet nucleoside diphosphokinase (NDK) activity were also investigated. At concentrations that prevented ADP-induced shape change, papaverine and dipyridamole had no effect on the formation of 14C-ATP from 14C-ADP by washed rabbit platelets. The methylxanthines partially inhibited NDK activity of washed rabbit platelets and of isolated platelet membranes, probably due to the structural similarity between the adenine ring of ADP and these substances. However, adenine (8 mM) inhibited ADP-induced shape change and platelet NDK activity but was a less effective inhibitor of ADP-induced platelet aggregation. Thus it seems unlikely that interference with platelet NDK or the ADP receptor is the major mechanism by which the methylxanthines inhibit platelet functions.

SummaryWe have examined whether inhibition by mepacrine of freeing of arachidonic acid from platelet phospholipids inhibits platelet aggregation to collagen, thrombin or ADP, and the release reaction induced by thrombin or collagen. Loss of arachidonic acid was monitored by measuring the amount of 14 C freed from platelets prelabelled with 14 C-arachidonic acid. Mepacrine inhibited 14 C loss by more than 80% but did not inhibit thrombin-induced platelet aggregation and had a small effect on release. ADP-induced platelet aggregation did not cause 14 C loss. Mepacrine inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation by inhibiting the association of fibrinogen with platelets during aggregation. The effect of mepacrine on fibrinogen binding could be considerably decreased by washing the platelets but the inhibition of 14 C loss persisted. Platelets pretreated with mepacrine and then washed show restoration of aggregation to collagen. Thus, mepacrine has two effects; 1. it inhibits phospholipases, 2. it inhibits fibrinogen binding. Freeing of arachidonic acid is not necessary for platelet aggregation or the release reaction.

SummaryThe effect of the concentration of Ca2+ in the suspending medium of human and rabbit platelets on aggregation, release of 14C-serotonin, and TXB2 formation in response to ADP, thrombin, l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphorylcholine (PAF), collagen and arachidonic acid was studied in either platelet-rich plasma anticoagulated with D-phenylalanyl-prolyl-arginyl chloromethylketone (PPACK) or citrate, or suspensions of washed platelets in modified Tyrode-albumin solutions containing 1 mM Mg2+ and concentrations of added Ca2+ ranging from 0 to 5 mM. In response to ADP, thrombin, or PAF, human platelets were stimulated to form TXA2 by close platelet contact in a low- Ca2+ medium; at physiological concentrations of Ca2+, TXB 2formation was much less and declined progressively as the concentration of Ca2+ was raised. When the formation of TXA 2was blocked with aspirin or indomethacin, aggregation and release by human platelets were strongest at physiological concentrations of Ca2+. Rabbit platelet responses differed markedly from those of human platelets because close contact of rabbit platelets in a low-Ca2+ medium did not promote TXA2 formation. Rabbit platelet responses were more strongly inhibited by the lack of added Ca2+ in the medium than the responses of human platelets, possibly because rabbit platelets do not contain releasable Ca2+.In all studies of human platelets in media with low concentrations of Ca2+, the additional contribution to platelet responses of TXA2 formed because of close platelet contact should be considered because TXA2 formation is not usually stimulated in this way at physiological concentrations of Ca2+. When TXA2 formation is blocked, aggregation and release responses to all agonists are greatest at physiological concentrations of Ca2+. Thus, the responses of human platelets in media with low concentrations of Ca2+ (citrated platelet-rich plasma or artificial media to which no Ca2+ has been added) are abnormal in at least two ways, and do not correspond to the responses at physiological concentrations of Ca2+.

Abstract
On Mars, clay minerals are widespread in terrains that date back to the Noachian period (4.1 billion to 3.7 billion years ago). It is thought that the Martian basaltic crust reacted with liquid water during this time to form hydrated clay minerals. Here we propose, however, that a substantial proportion of these clays was formed when Mars' primary crust reacted with a dense steam or supercritical atmosphere of water and carbon dioxide that was outgassed during magma ocean cooling. We present experimental evidence that shows rapid clay formation under conditions that would have been present at the base of such an atmosphere and also deeper in the porous crust. Furthermore, we explore the fate of a primordial clay-rich layer with the help of a parameterized crustal evolution model; we find that the primordial clay is locally disrupted by impacts and buried by impact-ejected material and by erupted volcanic material, but that it survives as a mostly coherent layer at depth, with limited surface exposures. These exposures are similar to those observed in remotely sensed orbital data from Mars. Our results can explain the present distribution of many clays on Mars, and the anomalously low density of the Martian crust in comparison with expectations.

Abstract
Historically, conservation-oriented research and policy in Brazil have focused on Amazon deforestation, but a majority of Brazil's deforestation and agricultural expansion has occurred in the neighboring Cerrado biome, a biodiversity hotspot comprised of dry forests, woodland savannas, and grasslands. Resilience of rainfed agriculture in both biomes likely depends on water recycling in undisturbed Cerrado vegetation; yet little is known about how changes in land-use and land-cover affect regional climate feedbacks in the Cerrado. We used remote sensing techniques to map land-use change across the Cerrado from 2003 to 2013. During this period, cropland agriculture more than doubled in area from 1.2 to 2.5 million ha, with 74% of new croplands sourced from previously intact Cerrado vegetation. We find that these changes have decreased the amount of water recycled to the atmosphere via evapotranspiration (ET) each year. In 2013 alone, cropland areas recycled 14 km(3) less (-3%) water than if the land cover had been native Cerrado vegetation. ET from single-cropping systems (e.g., soybeans) is less than from natural vegetation in all years, except in the months of January and February, the height of the growing season. In double-cropping systems (e.g., soybeans followed by corn), ET is similar to or greater than natural vegetation throughout a majority of the wet season (December-May). As intensification and extensification of agricultural production continue in the region, the impacts on the water cycle and opportunities for mitigation warrant consideration. For example, if an environmental goal is to minimize impacts on the water cycle, double cropping (intensification) might be emphasized over extensification to maintain a landscape that behaves more akin to the natural system.

Abstract
The Brazilian agro-industrial frontier in Mato Grosso rapidly expanded in total area of mechanized production and in total value of production in the last decade. This article shows the spatial pattern of that expansion from 2000 to 2010, based on novel analyses of satellite imagery. It then explores quantitatively and qualitatively the antecedents and correlates of intensification, the expansion of the area under two crops per year. Double cropping is most likely in areas with access to transportation networks, previous profitable agricultural production, and strong existing ties to national and international commodity markets. The article concludes with an exploration of the relationship between double cropping and socioeconomic development, showing that double cropping is strongly correlated with incomes of all residents of a community and with investments in education. We conclude that double cropping in Mato Grosso is very closely tied to multiple indicators of socioeconomic development.

Abstract
Tropical ecosystems play a large and complex role in the global carbon cycle. Clearing of natural ecosystems for agriculture leads to large pulses of CO2 to the atmosphere from terrestrial biomass. Concurrently, the remaining intact ecosystems, especially tropical forests, may be sequestering a large amount of carbon from the atmosphere in response to global environmental changes including climate changes and an increase in atmospheric CO2. Here we use an approach that integrates census-based historical land use reconstructions, remote-sensing-based contemporary land use change analyses, and simulation modeling of terrestrial biogeochemistry to estimate the net carbon balance over the period 1901-2006 for the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, which is one of the most rapidly changing agricultural frontiers in the world. By the end of this period, we estimate that of the state's 925 225 km2, 221 092 km2 have been converted to pastures and 89 533 km2 have been converted to croplands, with forest-to-pasture conversions being the dominant land use trajectory but with recent transitions to croplands increasing rapidly in the last decade. These conversions have led to a cumulative release of 4.8 Pg C to the atmosphere, with 80% from forest clearing and 20% from the clearing of cerrado. Over the same period, we estimate that the residual undisturbed ecosystems accumulated 0.3 Pg C in response to CO2 fertilization. Therefore, the net emissions of carbon from Mato Grosso over this period were 4.5 Pg C. Net carbon emissions from Mato Grosso since 2000 averaged 146 Tg C/yr, on the order of Brazil's fossil fuel emissions during this period. These emissions were associated with the expansion of croplands to grow soybeans. While alternative management regimes in croplands, including tillage, fertilization, and cropping patterns promote carbon storage in ecosystems, they remain a small portion of the net carbon balance for the region. This detailed accounting of a region's carbon balance is the type of foundation analysis needed by the new United Nations Collaborative Programmme for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD).

Abstract
Minerals and their occurrences can tell us about the chemistry, pressure, and temperatures of past environments on Mars and thus allow inferences about the potential for habitability. Thanks to recent space exploration, a new vision is emerging wherein Mars hosted environmental conditions of potential astrobiological relevance. This epoch is identified by the presence of phyllosilicate-bearing deposits, which are generally contained in very ancient basement rocks. In October 2008, over 100 planetary scientists representing 11 countries met in Paris to assess and discuss the relevance of martian phyllosilicates. The conference was structured to promote the discussion and debate of key scientific questions and key essential investigations. The purpose of this report is to document the current state of knowledge related to martian phyllosilicates and to ascertain which questions remain to be addressed: What are the basic characteristics of the phyllosilicate minerals on Mars? What are the genetic mechanisms by which phyllosilicate minerals have formed on Mars? What is the relationship between the phyllosilicate minerals observed in martian meteorites and those detected from orbit? What are the implications of phyllosilicate-bearing rocks for the development of prebiotic chemistry and the preservation of biosignatures? The most promising investigations to address these questions are presented.

Abstract
Geochemical models for Mars predict carbonate formation during aqueous alteration. Carbonate-bearing rocks had not previously been detected on Mars' surface, but Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mapping reveals a regional rock layer with near-infrared spectral characteristics that are consistent with the presence of magnesium carbonate in the Nili Fossae region. The carbonate is closely associated with both phyllosilicate-bearing and olivine-rich rock units and probably formed during the Noachian or early Hesperian era from the alteration of olivine by either hydrothermal fluids or near-surface water. The presence of carbonate as well as accompanying clays suggests that waters were neutral to alkaline at the time of its formation and that acidic weathering, proposed to be characteristic of Hesperian Mars, did not destroy these carbonates and thus did not dominate all aqueous environments.

Abstract
Observations by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter/Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars in the Mawrth Vallis region show several phyllosilicate species, indicating a wide range of past aqueous activity. Iron/magnesium (Fe/Mg)-smectite is observed in light-toned outcrops that probably formed via aqueous alteration of basalt of the ancient cratered terrain. This unit is overlain by rocks rich in hydrated silica, montmorillonite, and kaolinite that may have formed via subsequent leaching of Fe and Mg through extended aqueous events or a change in aqueous chemistry. A spectral feature attributed to an Fe2+ phase is present in many locations in the Mawrth Vallis region at the transition from Fe/Mg-smectite to aluminum/silicon (Al/Si)-rich units. Fe2+-bearing materials in terrestrial sediments are typically associated with microorganisms or changes in pH or cations and could be explained here by hydrothermal activity. The stratigraphy of Fe/Mg-smectite overlain by a ferrous phase, hydrated silica, and then Al-phyllosilicates implies a complex aqueous history.

Abstract
The Mars Exploration Rover (MER), Opportunity, showed that layered sulfate deposits in Meridiani Planum formed during a period of rising acidic ground water. Crystalline hematite spherules formed in the deposits as a consequence of aqueous alteration and were concentrated on the surface as a lag deposit as wind eroded the softer sulfate rocks. On the basis of Mars Express Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activité (OMEGA) orbital data, we demonstrate that crystalline hematite deposits are associated with layered sulfates in other areas on Mars, implying that Meridiani-like ground water systems were indeed widespread and representative of an extensive acid sulfate aqueous system.

Abstract
Improved understanding of the spatial dynamics of invasive plant species may lead to more effective land management and reduced future invasion. Here, we identified the spatial extents of nonnative cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in the north central Great Basin using remotely sensed data from Landsat MSS, TM, and ETM+. We compared cheatgrass extents in 1973 and 2001 to six spatially explicit landscape variables: elevation, aspect, hydrographic channels, cultivation, roads, and power lines. In 2001, Cheatgrass was 10% more likely to be found in elevation ranges from 1400 to 1700 m (although the data suggest a preferential invasion into lower elevations by 2001), 6% more likely on west and northwest facing slopes, and 3% more likely within hydrographic channels. Over this time period, cheatgrass expansion was also closely linked to proximity to land use. In 2001, cheatgrass was 20% more likely to be found within 3 km of cultivation, 13% more likely to be found within 700 m of a road, and 15% more likely to be found within 1 km of a power line. Finally, in 2001 cheatgrass was 26% more likely to be present within 150 m of areas occupied by cheatgrass in 1973. Using these relationships, we created a risk map of future cheatgrass invasion that may aid land management. These results highlight the importance of including land use variables and the extents of current plant invasion in predictions of future risk.

Abstract
Global mineralogical mapping of Mars by the Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activité (OMEGA) instrument on the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft provides new information on Mars' geological and climatic history. Phyllosilicates formed by aqueous alteration very early in the planet's history (the "phyllocian" era) are found in the oldest terrains; sulfates were formed in a second era (the "theiikian" era) in an acidic environment. Beginning about 3.5 billion years ago, the last era (the "siderikian") is dominated by the formation of anhydrous ferric oxides in a slow superficial weathering, without liquid water playing a major role across the planet.

Abstract
The recent identification of large deposits of sulphates by remote sensing and in situ observations has been considered evidence of the past presence of liquid water on Mars. Here we report the unambiguous detection of diverse phyllosilicates, a family of aqueous alteration products, on the basis of observations by the OMEGA imaging spectrometer on board the Mars Express spacecraft. These minerals are mainly associated with Noachian outcrops, which is consistent with an early active hydrological system, sustaining the long-term contact of igneous minerals with liquid water. We infer that the two main families of hydrated alteration products detected-phyllosilicates and sulphates--result from different formation processes. These occurred during two distinct climatic episodes: an early Noachian Mars, resulting in the formation of hydrated silicates, followed by a more acidic environment, in which sulphates formed.

Abstract
Data from the Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces, et l'Activité (OMEGA) on the Mars Express spacecraft identify the distinct mafic, rock-forming minerals olivine, low-calcium pyroxene (LCP), and high-calcium pyroxene (HCP) on the surface of Mars. Olivine- and HCP-rich regions are found in deposits that span the age range of geologic units. However, LCP-rich regions are found only in the ancient Noachian-aged units, which suggests that melts for these deposits were derived from a mantle depleted in aluminum and calcium. Extended dark regions in the northern plains exhibit no evidence of strong mafic absorptions or absorptions due to hydrated materials.
