Abstract
Raman spectroscopy (RS) was used to identify and quantify different nitrogen species in fertilizers. This is a fast and inexpensive method that requires no extensive sample preparation. Urea and nitrate were determined at 1000 and 1045 cm-1, respectively. Calibration plots obtained for these analytes showed adequate linearity, with regression coefficients (r) of 0.9989 and 0.9976, respectively. Ammonium was determined by difference after total N determination by high-resolution continuum source flame molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS FMAS), which provided a calibration plot with r = 0.9960. The inline coupling of RS and HR-CS FMAS allowed for a fast sequential determination of ammonium, nitrate, and urea, with limits of detection of 0.03 mg/L ammonium, 0.03 mg/L nitrate, and 0.01 mg/L urea. Relative standard deviations were ≤ 11 %, and the external standard calibration method provided accurate results for all analytes determined in certified reference materials, raw materials, and commercial samples of fertilizers. For comparison purposes, all samples were also analyzed by traditional Kjeldahl method. The RS HR-CS FMAS method was further validated by addition and recovery experiments, which provided recoveries in the 93 - 113 % range.

Abstract
Raman spectroscopy is emerging and powerful technique for identifying oxyanions of phosphorus, but it still is not straightforward applied to identify and quantify simultaneously phosphite and phosphate species in solution. Herein, simultaneous determination of phosphate (PO4) and phosphite (PO3) in fertilizer were evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. The influence of pH on Raman spectra of species was evaluated at various solution pH values, and the results showed accurate and selective analysis for phosphate and phosphite by using pH = 10.0 and bands located at 874 cm-1 and 2321 cm-1, respectively. Linear working range in the 0.15%-6.20% (w/v) P concentration was consistently obtained with regression coefficients (r) of 0.9953 (PO4) and 0.9945 (PO3). The limits of detection were 0.10% (w/v) P (PO4) and 0.05% (w/v) P (PO3). Relative standard deviations were lower than 6% for samples containing 10% P2O5 (PO4) and 31% P2O5 (PO3). Commercial fertilizers were analyzed by the proposed method using external calibration and found concentrations of P were in agreement with those obtained by the comparative spectrophotometric method at the 95% confidence level (paired t-test). Recoveries of spiked samples were in the 92-110% range.

Abstract
Novel silver(i) complexes of the type [AgCl(PPh3)2(L)] {PPh3 = triphenylphosphine; L = VTSC = 3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (1); VMTSC = 3-methoxy-4-[2-(morpholine-1-yl)ethoxy]benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (2); VPTSC = 3-methoxy-4-[2-(piperidine-1-yl)ethoxy]benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (3)} were synthesized and fully characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structures of complexes 2 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1-3 exhibited appreciable cytotoxic activity against human tumor cells (lung A549, breast MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) with IC50 values in 48 h of incubation ranging from 5.6 to 18 μM. Cellular uptake studies showed that complexes 1-3 were efficiently internalized after 3 hours of treatment in MDA-MB-231 cells. The effects of complex 1 on the cell morphology, cell cycle, induction of apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production have been evaluated in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells MDA-MB-231. Our results showed that complex 1 induced typical morphological alterations of cell death, an increase in cells at the sub-G1 phase, apoptosis, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Furthermore, DNA binding studies evidenced that 1 can bind to ct-DNA and does so without modifying the B-structure of the DNA, but that the binding is weak compared to that of Hoechst 33258.

Abstract
New silver(i) compounds containing 2-formylpyridine-N(4)-R-thiosemicarbazones and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques (IR and NMR), elemental analysis, ESI-MS and molar conductance measurements. In these complexes, both phen and thiosemicarbazone ligands are coordinated in a chelating bidentate fashion. Compounds 1-3 not only showed good in vitro antiproliferative activity against human lung (A549) and breast tumor cells (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7), with IC50 values ranging from 1.49 to 20.90 μM, but were also demonstrated to be less toxic towards human breast non-tumor cells (MCF-10A). Cellular uptake studies indicated that compounds 1-3 were taken up by the MDA-MB-231 cells in 6 hours. Cell death assays in the MDA-MB-231 cells were conducted with compound 1 aiming to evaluate its effects on cell morphology, induction of apoptosis, the cell cycle, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm). Compound 1 caused morphological changes, such as cell shrinkage and rounding, increased the sub-G1 phase population, and induced apoptotic cell death, ROS formation and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm). DNA binding results revealed that 1 interacted with the ct-DNA minor groove. Complexes 1-3 also exhibited good in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv, with MIC values ranging from 3.37 to 4.65 μM.

Abstract
The usefulness of molecular absorption was investigated for the determination of total sulfur (S) in agricultural samples by high-resolution continuum source flame molecular absorption spectrometry. The lines for CS at 257.595, 257.958, and 258.056 nm and for SH at 323.658, 324.064, and 327.990 nm were evaluated. Figures of merit, such as linear dynamic range, sensitivity, linear correlation, characteristic concentration, limit of detection, and precision, were established. For selected CS lines, wavelength-integrated absorbance equivalent to 3 pixels, analytical curves in the 100-2500 mg L(-1) (257.595 nm), 250-2000 mg L(-1) (257.958 nm), and 250-5000 mg L(-1) (258.056 nm) ranges with a linear correlation coefficient better than 0.9980 were obtained. Results were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t test) with those obtained by gravimetry. Recoveries of S in fungicide and fertilizer samples were within the 84-109% range, and the relative standard deviation (n=12) was typically <5%.

Abstract
Amperometric titration using two Pt microelectrodes for the determination of phosphite in fertilizers based on the oxidation of analyte by iodine is proposed. The influence of pH, buffer composition, temperature, and foreign species on the end point and titration time was investigated. For titrations carried out at 70 degrees C using the pH 6.8 phosphate buffer, samples containing ca. 0.4% (m/v) P(2)O(5) could be titrated with 0.050 mol L(-1) iodine titrant, and the end point determined by extrapolating the linear portions of the plot to their intersection coincided with the end point identified by spectrophotometry. Accuracy was checked for phosphite determination in five fertilizer samples. Results were in agreement at the 95% confidence level (paired t test) with spectrophotometry. Recoveries of phosphite added to fertilizer samples ranged from 97% to 102% regardless of the amount of spiking in several determinations. The relative standard deviation (n = 10) was 1.0% for a diluted sample containing 0.050 mol L(-1) Na(2)HPO(3).

Abstract
A method for the direct determination of Pb in wines by simultaneous multi-element atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAS) using a transversely heated graphite atomizer, Zeeman-effect background corrector and internal standardization is proposed. Bismuth was used as an internal standard and Pd(NO3)2 plus Mg(NO3)2 as chemical modifier to stabilize both the analyte and the internal standard. The implementation of two pyrolysis steps avoided any build-up of carbonaceous residues on the graphite platform. All diluted samples (1 + 1 v/v) in 0.2% v/v HNO3 and reference solutions (5.0-50 microg l(-1) Pb in 0.2% v/v HNO3) were spiked with 25 microg l(-1) Bi. For a 20 microl aliquot dispensed into the graphite tube, a good correlation (r = 0.9997) was obtained between the ratio of the analyte signal to the internal standard signal and the analyte concentration of the reference solutions. The electrothermal behaviour of Pb and Bi in red, white and rosé wines were compared. In addition, absorbance variations due to changes in experimental conditions, such as atomizer temperature, integration time, injected sample volume, radiation beam intensity, graphite tube surface, dilution and sample composition, were minimized by using Bi as internal standard. Relative standard deviations of measurements based on integrated absorbance varied from 0.1 to 3.4% and from 0.5 to 7.3% (n = 12) with and without internal standard correction, respectively. Good recoveries (91-104%) for Pb spikes were obtained. The characteristic mass was 45 pg Pb and the limit of detection based on integrated absorbance was 0.9 microg l(-1) Pb. Internal standardization increased the lifetime of the tube by 25%. Direct determinations of Pb in wines with and without internal standardization approaches were in agreement at the 95% confidence level. The repeatability and the tube lifetime were improved when using Bi as internal standard. The improvement in accuracy using an internal standard was only observed when the analytical results were affected by errors.
