Abstract
Carbon-based electrode materials have widely been used in supercapacitors. Unfortunately, the fabrication of the supercapacitors includes a polymeric binding material that leads to an undesirable addition of weight along with an increased charge transfer resistance. Herein, binder-free and lightweight electrodes were fabricated using powder processing of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) resulting in a hybrid all-carbon composite material. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the composite electrodes were studied at different concentrations of GNPs. The specific capacitance (Cs) of the CNFs/GNPs composite was improved by increasing the concentration of GNPs. A maximum Cs of around 120 F g-1was achieved at 90 wt% GNPs which is around 5-fold higher in value than the pristine CNFs in 1 M potassium hydroxides (KOH), which then further increased to 189 F g-1in 6 M KOH electrolyte. The energy density of around 20 Wh kg-1with the corresponding power density of 340 W kg-1was achieved in the supercapacitor containing 90 wt% GNPs. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the composite is related to the presence of a synergistic effect and the CNFs establishing conductive/percolating networks. Such binder-free all-carbon electrodes can be a potential candidate for next-generation energy applications.

Abstract
Seagrass ecosystems usually respond in a nonlinear fashion to increasing pressures and environmental changes. Feedback mechanisms operating at the ecosystem level and involving multiple interactions among the seagrass meadow, its associated community and the physical environment are known to play a major role in such nonlinear responses. Phenotypic plasticity may also be important for buffering these ecological thresholds (i.e., regime shifts) as many physiological processes show nonlinear responses to gradual environmental changes, conferring the appearance of resistance before the effects at the organism and population levels are visible. However, the potential involvement of plant plasticity in driving catastrophic shifts in seagrass ecosystems has not yet been assessed. In this study, we conducted a manipulative 6-month light-gradient experiment in the field to capture nonlinearities of the physiological and population responses of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa to gradual light reduction. The aim was to explore if and how the photo-acclimatory responses of shaded plants are translated to the population level and, hence, to the ecosystem level. Results showed that the seagrass population was rather stable under increasing shading levels through the activation of multilevel photo-acclimative responses, which are initiated with light reduction and modulated in proportion to shading intensity. The activation of photo-physiological and metabolic compensatory responses allowed shaded plants to sustain nearly constant plant productivity (metabolic carbon balance) along a range of shading levels before losing linearity and starting to decline. The species then activated plant- and meadow-scale photo-acclimative responses and drew on its energy reserves (rhizome carbohydrates) to confer additional population resilience. However, when the integration of all these buffering mechanisms failed to counterbalance the effects of extreme light limitation, the population collapsed, giving place to a phase shift from vegetated to bare sediments with catastrophic ecosystem outcomes. Our findings evidence that ecological thresholds in seagrass ecosystems under light limitation can be explained by the role of species' compensatory responses in modulating population-level responses. The thresholds of these plastic responses anticipate the sudden loss of seagrass meadows with the potential to be used as early warning indicators signalling the imminent collapse of the ecosystem, which is of great value for the real-world management of seagrass ecosystems.

Abstract
Coastal ecosystems, and especially estuaries, are subject to environmental fluctuations that can be amplified by anthropogenic changes. Under a future scenario of global warming, temperature and salinity are likely to be altered and the persistence of macrophyte-dominated ecosystems can be compromised, particularly native or local seagrass communities. This study examined the response of the local seagrass Halophila ovalis to the joint effect of a short-term salinity increase and a transient temperature stress, through two mesocosm experiments. Warming caused a decline in Fv/Fm, TNC content in leaves and plant growth, and increased dark respiration, revealing clear detrimental symptoms of heat stress on plant metabolism and performance. Salinity increase in isolation favoured ramet survival. However, in combination with warming, salinity had a positive effect on Gross Pmax. This suggests that increased salinities might dampen the negative effects of high temperatures, buffering, to some extent, the impact of global warming in temperate estuaries.

Abstract
Tomato is the crop with the greatest economic importance in the world and salinity stress causes a reduction in the quantity and quality of crop production. The objective of this work is to verify if the accumulation of proline and glycine betaine (GB) and their metabolisms improve tolerance to salt stress. Two commercial genotypes of Solanum Lycopersicum L., Grand Brix and Marmande RAF were used for this work. The analyzed parameters were growth parameters, proline concentration and its metabolism, GB and its above betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) synthesis and some related amino acids. Saline stress reduced biomass and relative growth rate (RGR) in both genotypes, this effect being greater in Marmande RAF. These results, together with the proline accumulation indicate that Grand Brix is more tolerant to saline stress. The proline increase in Grand Brix came by the ornithine pathway, leaving the glutamate pathway repressed. On the other hand, it was found in both genotypes a BADH and GB decreases as a salinity tolerance mechanism. We propose that, unlike proline, GB synthesis can produce H2O2 thereby, GB not act as compatible solute and salt tolerance does not improve.

Abstract
Increased plant mortality in temperate seagrass populations has been recently observed after summer heatwaves, although the underlying causes of plant death are yet unknown. The potential energetic constrains resulting from anomalous thermal events could be the reason that triggered seagrass mortality, as demonstrated for benthic invertebrates. To test this hypothesis, the carbon balance of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa plants from contrasting thermal environments was investigated during a simulated heatwave, by analyzing their photosynthetic performance, carbon balance (ratio photosynthesis:respiration), carbohydrates content, growth and mortality. Both species were able to overcome and recover from the thermal stress produced by the six-week exposure to temperatures 4 °C above mean summer levels, albeit plants from cold waters were more sensitive to warming than plants from warm waters as reflected by their inability to maintain their P:R ratio unaltered. The strategies through which plants tend to preserve their energetic status varied depending on the biology of the species and the thermal origin of plants. These included respiratory homeostasis (P. oceanica warm-plants), carbon diversion from growth to respiration (C. nodosa cold-plants) or storage (P. oceanica warm-plants) and changes in biomass allocation (C. nodosa warm-plants). Findings suggest an important geographic heterogeneity in the overall response of Mediterranean seagrasses to warming with potential negative impacts on the functions and services offered by seagrass meadows including among others their capacity for carbon sequestration and carbon export to adjacent ecosystems.

Abstract
Sexual reproduction in predominantly clonal marine plants increases recombination favoring adaptation and enhancing species resilience to environmental change. Recent studies of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica suggest that flowering intensity and frequency are correlated with warming events associated with global climate change, but these studies have been observational without direct experimental support. We used controlled experiments to test if warming can effectively trigger flowering in P. oceanica. A six-week heat wave was simulated under laboratory mesocosm conditions. Heating negatively impacted leaf growth rates, but by the end of the experiment most of the heated plants flowered, while controls plants did not. Heated and control plants were not genetically distinct and flowering intensity was significantly correlated with allelic richness and heterozygosity. This is an unprecedented finding, showing that the response of seagrasses to warming will be more plastic, more complex and potentially more resilient than previously imagined.

Abstract
Legislation in the European Union (EU) aimed at reaching by 2015 a Good Ecological Status in regard to tributyltin (TBT, the biocide used in traditional antifouling paints). With a view to check such an achievement in N Atlantic Spain, baseline monitoring of gastropod imposex (the recommended assessment tool) was extended up to that date. In Galicia (the Western part of the study area) the use of the rock snail Nucella lapillus since 1996 had shown this environmental objective to be met as soon as 2009, but new surveys reveal no further improvement thereafter. As for the Eastern Cantabrian coast, imposex levels in the mud snail Nassarius reticulatus progressively declined from 2006 to 2015, when records finally complied with expectations. Both data sets are confronted and discussed in relation to the diverse environmental factors that may be determining the distribution of gastropods in these regions.

Abstract
Seawater warming associated to the ongoing climate change threatens functioning and survival of keystone coastal benthic species such as seagrasses. Under elevated temperatures, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is increased and plants must activate their antioxidant defense mechanisms to protect themselves from oxidative damage. Here we explore from a molecular perspective the ability of Mediterranean seagrasses to activate heat stress response mechanisms, with particular focus on antioxidants. The level of expression of targeted genes was analyzed in shallow and deep plants of the species Posidonia oceanica and in shallow plants of Cymodocea nodosa along an acute heat exposure of several days and after recovery. The overall gene expression response of P. oceanica was more intense and complete than in C. nodosa and reflected a higher oxidative stress level during the experimental heat exposure. The strong activation of genes with chaperone activity (heat shock proteins and a luminal binding protein) just in P. oceanica plants, suggested the higher sensitivity of the species to increased temperatures. In spite of the interspecific differences, genes from the superoxide dismutase (SOD) family seem to play a pivotal role in the thermal stress response of Mediterranean seagrasses as previously reported for other marine plant species. Shallow and deep P. oceanica ecotypes showed a different timing of response to heat. Shallow plants early responded to heat and after a few days relaxed their response which suggests a successful early metabolic adjustment. The response of deep plants was delayed and their recovery incomplete evidencing a lower resilience to heat in respect to shallow ecotypes. Moreover, shallow ecotypes showed some degree of pre-adaptation to heat as most analyzed genes showed higher constitutive expression levels than in deep ecotypes. The recurrent exposure of shallow plants to elevated summer temperatures has likely endowed them with a higher basal level of antioxidant defense and a faster responsiveness to warming than deep plants. Our findings match with previous physiological studies and supported the idea that warming will differently impact Mediterranean seagrass meadows depending on the species as well as on the depth (i.e. thermal regimen) at which the meadow grows. The increase in the incidence of summer heat waves could therefore produce a significant change in the distribution and composition of Mediterranean seagrass meadows with considerable consequences for the functioning of the whole ecosystem and for the socio-economic services that these ecosystems offer to the riverine populations.

Abstract
Imposex is decreasing worldwide after the total ban on tributyltin (TBT) from antifouling paints. In order to assess improvement in the NE Atlantic, the OSPAR Convention designed an Ecological Quality Objective (EcoQO) based on the VDSI (vas deferens sequence index, an agreed measure of imposex) in the rock snail Nucella lapillus; wherever this is not available, the mud snail Nassarius reticulatus was proposed as a proxy. We determined VDSI in Galician populations of rock (n≥34) and mud (n≥18) snails at regular intervals from pre-ban times until 2009 and 2011, respectively. While imposex in the former started decreasing in 2006 and by 2009 the EcoQO had been met in the area, VDSI in the latter was not significantly reduced until 2011 and values contradict such an achievement. This suggests that the OSPAR imposex bi-species scheme may not be of direct application in the current post-ban scenario.

Abstract
The Fuente de Piedra lake is a hypersaline wetland of great extension (13.5km2) and rich in aquatic birds and other species. It became therefore the third Spanish wetland to be included in the Ramsar convention and has been a "nature reserve" since 1984. The lake has an endorheic basin (150km2) with variable-density flows dominated by complex hydrogeological conditions. The traditional conceptualization of endorheic basins in semiarid climates considered that the brine in this hydric system was exclusively of evaporative origin and was placed only in the lake and its surrounding discharge area in the basin. Previous geophysical and hydrochemical studies identified different types of waters and brines. In this work, natural tracers (Cl-, Br-, Na+, Mg2+) and environmental isotopes (18O, 2H, 14C, 13C and 3H) were employed to a) discriminate different types of brines according to their degree of evaporation and genesis, and b) to estimate residence times of brine waters and identify recharge areas of the different flow subsystems. A conceptual model of the hydrogeological system of the lake basin and its links to a regional karst system is proposed.

Abstract
Recently Li and Yam (2005) studied which ageing properties for series and parallel systems are inherited for the components. In this paper we provide new results for the increasing convex and concave orders, the increasing mean residual life (IMRL), decreasing failure rate (DFR), the new worse than used in expectation (NWUE), the increasing failure rate in average (IFRA), the decreasing failure rate in average (DFRA), and the new better than used in the convex order (NBUC) ageing classes.

In this note, we give some preservation results for the classes IFR(2), NBU(2) and their dual classes under the formation of special coherent systems. Further, we show with examples that the relationships among these aging classes and others are strictly one-way implications.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study ageing properties of first-passage times of increasing Markov chains. We extend the literature to some new ageing classes, such as the IFR(2), NBU(2), DRLLt
and NBULt classes. We also give sufficient conditions in the finite case, that are more efficient computationally, just in terms of the transition matrix K, in the discrete case, or the generator matrix Q, in the continuous case. For the uniformizable, continuous-time Markov processes, we derive conditions in terms of the discrete uniformized Markov chain for the NBU(2) and the NBULt
classes. In the last section, a review of the main results in this direction in the literature is given, and we compare some of the conditions stated in this paper with others given in the literature about some other ageing classes. Some examples where these results are applied are given.

Abstract
Polyamines, small aliphatic polycations, have been suggested to play key roles in a number of biological processes. In this paper, attempts were made to investigate the possibility of improving antioxidant response of tomato fruits in relation with endogenous free polyamines content. We studied the reactive oxygen species and polyamines content, and antioxidant and polyamine-biosynthesis enzyme activities in fruits of ungrafted and grafted tomato plants under moderate water stress. We used a drought-tolerant cultivar (Zarina) and drought-sensitive cultivar (Josefina) to obtain reciprocal graft, selfgraft and ungraft plants. Fruits contained higher endogenous polyamine content during the course of the experiment relative to the control, coupled with higher arginine decarboxylase and spermine synthase activities in Zarina ungrafted and ZarxJos. In these cultivars, tomato fruits showed a lower reactive oxygen species generation and higher catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, suggesting that a higher content in polyamines (especially spermine) exerted a positive effect on antioxidant systems. All of these data suggest that spermine leads to more effective reactive oxygen species scavenging (less tissue damage) in tomato fruits, which may function collectively to enhance dehydration tolerance.

Abstract
Considering the interplay of multiple STATs in response to cytokines, we investigated how IL-6 and its blocking affect STAT signaling in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Leukocytes obtained from RA patients before and after tocilizumab treatment and healthy donors (HDs) were cytokine-stimulated and STAT phosphorylation was analyzed by cytometry. RA patients had significantly fewer pSTAT1+, pSTAT3+, and pSTAT6+ monocytes and pSTAT5+ lymphocytes than HDs. After 24weeks of treatment, percentages of IFNγ-induced pSTAT1+ and IL-10-induced pSTAT3+ monocytes in RA patients increased, reaching levels comparable to HDs. pSTAT1+ and pSTAT3+ cells correlated inversely with RA disease activity index and levels of pSTAT+ cells at baseline were higher in patients with good EULAR response to tocilizumab. IFNγ-induced pSTAT1+ cells correlated inversely with memory T cells and anti-CCP levels. IL-10-induced pSTAT3+ cells correlated with Treg/Teff ratio. Our findings suggest that IL-6 blocking reduces the inflammatory mechanisms through the correction of STAT1 and STAT3 activation status.

Abstract
Environmental quality in coastal Europe has improved since the complete 2003 ban on the use of tributyltin (TBT) in antifouling paints. However, there is evidence that TBT is entering the water column, presumably from illegal practices. We determined the concentration of butyltins (BTs: TBT and derivatives) in populations of two gastropods, the rock snail Nucella lapillus (n=17) and the mud snail Nassarius reticulatus (n=18) at regular intervals from pre-ban times until 2009 and 2011, respectively, in NW Spain. Although a substantial decline in TBT occurred shortly after the ban, no significant changes were observed in either species over the last 3-year period of study. In addition, the proportion of TBT relative to the sum of BTs (a marker of recent pollution) in the most recent rock snail samples unexpectedly increased; this proportion therefore showed a generally decreasing but oscillatory trend over time. The results are consistent with the theoretical expectation of BT desorption from sediments; however, this natural phenomenon is now interpreted as a recurrent episode rather than a unique, transient event. Evidence of this subtle input improves our understanding of TBT persistence in the environment in Europe and worldwide.

Abstract
Water stress is one of the most important factors limiting the growth and productivity of crops. The implication of compatible osmolytes such as proline and polyamines in osmotic adjustment has been widely described in numerous plants species under stress conditions. In the present study, we investigated the response of five cherry tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum L.) subjected to moderate water stress in order to shed light on the involvement of proline and polyamine metabolism in the mechanisms of tolerance to moderate water stress. Our results indicate that the most water stress-resistant cultivar (Zarina) had increased degradation of proline associated with increased polyamine synthesis, with a higher concentration of spermidine and spermine under stress conditions. In contrast, Josefina, the cultivar most sensitive to water stress, showed a proline accumulation associated with increased synthesis after being subjected to stress. In turn, in this cultivar, no rise in polyamine synthesis was detected. Therefore, all the data appear to indicate that polyamine metabolism is more involved in the tolerance response to moderate water stress.

Abstract
Reverse osmosis membranes at many desalination plants are disinfected by periodic shock treatments with sodium metabisulphite, which have potentially toxic effects to the environment for marine life, although no empirical and experimental evidence for this is yet available. The aim of this study was to characterise for the first time, the physico-chemical modification of the marine environment and its biological effects, caused by hypersaline plumes during these membrane cleaning treatments. The case study was the Maspalomas II desalination plant, located in the south of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). Toxicity bioassays were performed on marine species characteristic for the infralittoral soft bottoms influenced by the brine plume (Synodus synodus and Cymodocea nodosa), and revealed a high sensitivity to short-term exposure to low sodium metabisulphite concentrations. The corrective measure of incorporating a diffusion system with Venturi Eductors reduced nearly all the areas of influence, virtually eliminating the impact of the disinfectant.

Abstract
Proinsulin has been characterized as a neuroprotective molecule. In this work we assess the therapeutic potential of proinsulin on photoreceptor degeneration, synaptic connectivity, and functional activity of the retina in the transgenic P23H rat, an animal model of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (RP). P23H homozygous rats received an intramuscular injection of an adeno-associated viral vector serotype 1 (AAV1) expressing human proinsulin (hPi+) or AAV1-null vector (hPi-) at P20. Levels of hPi in serum were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and visual function was evaluated by electroretinographic (ERG) recording at P30, P60, P90, and P120. Preservation of retinal structure was assessed by immunohistochemistry at P120. Human proinsulin was detected in serum from rats injected with hPi+ at all times tested, with average hPi levels ranging from 1.1 nM (P30) to 1.4 nM (P120). ERG recordings showed an amelioration of vision loss in hPi+ animals. The scotopic b-waves were significantly higher in hPi+ animals than in control rats at P90 and P120. This attenuation of visual deterioration correlated with a delay in photoreceptor degeneration and the preservation of retinal cytoarchitecture. hPi+ animals had 48.7% more photoreceptors than control animals. Presynaptic and postsynaptic elements, as well as the synaptic contacts between photoreceptors and bipolar or horizontal cells, were preserved in hPi+ P23H rats. Furthermore, in hPi+ rat retinas the number of rod bipolar cell bodies was greater than in control rats. Our data demonstrate that hPi expression preserves cone and rod structure and function, together with their contacts with postsynaptic neurons, in the P23H rat. These data strongly support the further development of proinsulin-based therapy to counteract retinitis pigmentosa.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A recent meta-analysis concluded that multicomponent treatments are effective for some fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms. The objective of this study was to examine whether a psychoeducational intervention implemented in primary care is more effective than usual care for improving the functional status of patients with FM. METHODS This study was based on a randomized controlled trial. The 484 patients with FM included in a database of the Viladecans Hospital (Barcelona, Spain) were eligible for screening. Finally, 108 patients were randomly assigned to the intervention and 108 patients were assigned to usual care. The intervention comprised nine 2-hour sessions (5 sessions of education and 4 sessions of autogenic relaxation). The patients were assessed before and after the intervention with a battery of instruments (measuring sociodemographic data, medical comorbidities, functional status, trait anxiety, and social desirability). RESULTS The posttreatment drop-out rate was 9.7% (intervention: 6.5%; control: 13%). The intention-to-treat analyses showed significant differences between the groups at posttreatment: the intervention group improved in physical impairment, days not feeling well, pain, general fatigue, morning fatigue, stiffness, anxiety, and depression (medium effect size in most cases). The patients who responded to the intervention reported less trait anxiety at baseline than nonresponders. The absolute risk reduction with the intervention was 36.1% (95% confidence interval: 23.3-48.8) and the number needed to treat was 3 (95% confidence interval: 2.0-4.3). DISCUSSION A 2-month psychoeducational intervention improves the functional status of FM patients to a greater extent than usual care, at least in the short-term. The social desirability bias did not explain the reported outcomes. Trait anxiety was associated with response to treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluate the introduction of the enucleation with Holmium laser in our center, including the surgeon's learning curve by the analysis of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS 150 procedures have been analyzed in a retrospective manner with an average follow-up of 11 months. Qmax, IPSS and Qol have been determined before surgery, at 6 months and 12 months, realizing their statistic analysis. PSA was measured before surgery and after 3 months. Complications, surgical time and hospital stay have been analyzed. RESULTS Average patient age was 72, 4 years. Average prostatic size was of 71,3 gr (18-150). Average hospital stay was of 22 h. Qmax before surgery, 6 months, 12 months was of 7,53 ml/s, 23,24 ml/s and 21,62 ml/s being statistically significant (p<0,01). Transfusion rate was of 1,3% and urethral stenosis rate of 4%. IPSS improvement at 6 and 12 months was statistically significant as well (p<0, 01). CONCLUSIONS Enucleation with Holmium laser is a safe and effective technique with lower complication rate than TURP, included during the learning curve.

Abstract
The aim of this study was estimating the remote influence of waste dispersed from a large off-shore fish farm complex (6197 ton year(-1)) on the near-shore Posidonia oceanica meadow (26-27 m deep) located at a distance of 3 km. Measurements of isotopic nitrogen content in epiphytes and seagrass leaf tissues, epiphyte biomass, shoot size, herbivory pressure, shoot density and seagrass meadow cover, performed in this meadow (FA area) were compared with those obtained in an undisturbed control meadow (CA area) to evaluate: (1) the remote influence of waste and (2) the impact of such influence on seagrass condition. In addition, delta(15)N measurements in particulate organic matter of natural and anthropogenic origin were used in a single-isotope mixing model to elucidate the relative contributions of these sources to the isotopic N signal measured in epiphytes and leaf tissues. Total tissue N content was similar between meadow areas, but delta(15)N signatures were significantly higher in the FA area than in the CA area both in epiphytes and seagrass leaf tissues. Results from the mixing model, together with available information on local currents and previous studies, support the conclusion that the dispersion of farm wastes over large areas (spanning kilometres) are responsible for the elevated delta(15)N signatures found in the FA meadow area. Despite this, no changes in meadow structure were detected and only some changes at the level of seagrass community (epiphytes abundances and herbivores activity) could be interpreted at the light of nutrient-induced effects in the FA area. Results from this study indicate that concentrating aquaculture facilities in off-shore areas is a strategy not totally exempt of environmental risk on near-shore sensitive habitats such as seagrass meadows.

Abstract
Boron (B) toxicity has become important in areas close to the Mediterranean Sea where intensive agriculture has been developed. The objective of this research was to study the effects of B toxicity (0.5 mM and 2.0 mM B) on nitrogen (N) assimilation of two tomato cultivars that are often used in these areas. Leaf biomass, relative leaf growth rate (RGR(L)), concentration of B, nitrate (NO(3) (-)), ammonium (NH(4) (+)), organic N, amino acids and soluble proteins, as well as nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NiR), glutamine synthase (GS), glutamate synthetase (GOGAT) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activities were analysed in leaves. Boron toxicity significantly decreased leaf biomass, RGR(L), organic N, soluble proteins, and NR and NiR activities. The lowest NO(3) (-) and NH(4) (+) concentration in leaves was recorded when plants were supplied with 2.0 mM B in the root medium. Total B, amino acids, activities of GS, GOGAT and GDH increased under B toxicity. Data from the present study prove that B toxicity causes inhibition of NO(3) (-) reduction and increases NH(4) (+) assimilation in tomato plants.

Abstract
The gastropod Nassarius reticulatus has been used as a tributyltin (TBT) biomonitor over the last two decades, and it is now endorsed by Atlantic Europe environmental agencies. However, there is one important question debated by the earliest studies still unresolved, namely whether butyltin accumulation in tissues is sex-dependent or not. Thus, a field survey was conducted along the Cantabrian coast: samples were subject to both customary imposex and modern chemical analyses. No significant bioaccumulation differences between sexes were found for any of the three butyltin species examined (i.e. TBT plus derivatives di- and mono-butyltin). In addition, both lower-than-expected absolute butyltins and minor relative TBT proportions in tissues conform with decreasing pollution in nearby areas. Imposex, though, is generally still considerable due to a lesser responsiveness of population indexes. Finally, one sample showed no sign of imposex but quantifiable butyltins; these are good news indicating that TBT is getting back down to levels around the induction threshold of this specific biological effect.

Abstract
To gain an insight into the role of lignification and membrane permeability in the root response to boron (B) toxicity, lignification-related enzymes and a number of physiological and oxidative stress parameters were analyzed in two tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivars (Kosaco and Josefina) subjected to 0.05 (control), 0.5 and 2mM B during 16 days. 2mM B supply inhibited root growth and increased the root B concentration in both tomato cultivars. Although excess B increased the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration in Kosaco, no major changes were observed in other oxidative-stress-related parameters. High levels of B supply also induced higher lignin deposition in Kosaco roots but did not in Josefina ones. The latter result was associated with an increase of the polyphenol oxidase (PPO), guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX) and soluble syringaldazine peroxidase (SPOX) activity in Kosaco roots. Boron toxicity did not induce lipid peroxidation but increased the leakage of K(+) and the passive efflux of B in tomato roots. We conclude that high concentrations of B do not cause major oxidative or membrane damage in tomato roots. The data also indicate that high levels of B supply induce a higher lignin deposition in Kosaco roots but not in Josefina ones. This phenomenon suggests that lignification is not an essential factor reducing root growth in tomato plants, however, it proves that exist a high genotypic variation in response to excess B at root level.

Abstract
Two monitoring surveys were repeated in Galicia (NW Spain): one in 2003 concerned the rocky shore gastropod Nucella lapillus (19 populations, the reference campaign in 1996), the other dealt in 2005 with the infaunal snail Nassarius reticulatus (25 sites, the previous one in 2000). Samples were subject to a standard protocol to determine the concentrations of butyltins (BTs) in tissues. Results show that pollution in most populations has considerably decreased over the last decade: for N. lapillus the mean descent ranged from 37% (for tributyltin -TBT-) to 66% (for monobutyltin -MBT-), and TBT concentrations were on average halved in N. reticulatus. However, derivatives generally increased in this latter species, to the extent that dibutyltin -DBT- in several 2005 samples exceeded the aggregate of all three BTs in 2000. As a consequence, a major change in the bioaccumulation patterns becomes evident, particularly when computing the butyltin degradation index [BDI: (DBT+MBT)/TBT]. This shift is most marked at sites where pollution has always been lowest, and it shows significant negative correlation between both gastropods. Since sources other than antifouling paints are not important in the area, it is proposed that observations are due to BT desorption from sediments through some interplay involving the different characteristics of the chemicals and the contrasting biology of the animals.

Abstract
Estimates of the average distances by which marine larvae disperse are generally poorly described, despite the central role that larval dispersal plays in the demographic connectivity of populations across geographic space. Here, we describe the population genetic structure and average dispersal distance of the netted dog whelk Nassarius reticulatus (L.) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Prosobranchia), a widespread member of European intertidal communities, using DNA sequence variation in a fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). An analysis of 156 individuals from 6 locations spread across approximately 1700 km of the European Atlantic coastline revealed weak and nonsignificant population structure (overall Phi(ST) = 0.00013). However, pairwise Phi(ST) values revealed a slight but significant increase in genetic isolation with geographic distance (IBD), suggesting that populations are not panmictic across the sampled geographic range. If we assume that the isolation by distance is maintained by a stable, stepping stone model of gene flow, then the slope of the IBD is consistent with an average larval dispersal distance of approximately 70 km per generation. The spatial scale of larval dispersal in N. reticulatus is consistent with the life cycle of the species (planktotrophic veliger lasting 30-60 days before competent to settle). A mismatch analysis of the COI sequences revealed a signature of an ancient demographic expansion that began 61 500-160,000 years ago, well before the most recent Pleistocene glaciation event. The greatest levels of genetic diversity occur within the middle latitudes of the whelk's geographic range, consistent with the notion that historic populations of N. reticulatus might have expanded northward and southward from the centrally located Bay of Biscay.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The study is aimed at improving our knowledge about the functional impairment of the psoriatic arthritis through a multicentral series. PATIENTS AND METHOD We have designed a transversal and multicentral study (centers of the same geographical area), including 343 patients with psoriatic arthritis. Eight medical centers have participated. Patients have been divided depending on the assistential level where they are visited. We have collected the following data: sex, age, assistential level, duration of psoriasis and arthritis, age at onset of psoriasis and arthritis, clinical form, ARA functional impairment, number of tender and swollen joints, presence of dactylitis, distal interphalangeal affection, axial involvement, ostheolisis or nail lesions, erithrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein, hemoglobine, leucocites, platelets, HLA-B27 and rheumatoid factor. RESULTS 7.14% of the patients were significatly disabled (ARA functional class III and IV). 30.32% were patients visited in a primary assistential level, 30.90% in a secondary assistential level and 38.78% a tertiary and universitary hospital. We found statistically significant correlation between III and IV functional classes and age, assistential level, ostheolisis, corticoid treatment, ESR, leucocites, platelets and number of tender joints. CONCLUSIONS We find a better functional capacity in our patients than in other studies. The inclusion of patients from different assistential levels instead of just patients visited in a tertiary hospital might be the cause of this difference.

Abstract
Objective To study the prognosis of HIV-infected patients with virological failure after exposure to three classes of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). Design Cohort study. Setting: French Hospital Database on HIV. Patients Patients previously exposed to at least two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), two protease inhibitors and one non-NRTI, with viral load (VL) values of >5000 copies/ml after the exposure criteria were met and a new treatment initiated between 1998 and 2001 with VL >5000 copies/ml. Main outcome measures Risk of new AIDS-defining-events (ADEs) or death from first introduction of a drug never used before occurring between 1998 and 2001 defined as baseline. Results The main baseline characteristics of the 1092 patients were: previous ADE in 49% of cases, median CD4 cell count 181 μl, median VL 4.9 log10 copies/ml, median duration of ARV therapy 5.0 years and previous exposure to a median of nine ARVs. The crude progression rates were 20.1/100 patient-years among patients included in 1998, 15.1 in 1999, 11.1 in 2000 and 8.6 in 2001. After adjustment for baseline characteristics, the calendar year of inclusion was associated with the risk of clinical progression ( P<0.001). When the types of newly available drugs used at baseline or during follow-up were introduced into the model, year of inclusion was no longer associated with the risk of clinical progression ( P=0.42), while exposure to amprenavir/r, lopinavir/r, abacavir or tenofovir was associated with a lower risk. Conclusions The clinical prognosis of heavily pretreated patients experiencing virological failure improved between 1998 and 2001, mainly thanks to the use of newly available drugs with more favourable resistance profiles.

Abstract
Proline and quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC), in addition to being N-rich, are known to accumulate in plants under different environmental stress conditions. The accumulation of N-rich compounds in plants has been shown to confer stress resistance. The aim of our work is two-fold: first, to study the influence of temperature on proline, QAC, and choline metabolism in tomato leaves; and second, to investigate the relationship between N source applied (NO3- or NH4+) and thermal stress resistance in these plants. To do this, experiments were conducted at three different temperatures (10 degrees C, 25 degrees C, 35 degrees C); at each temperature half of the plants received NO3-, and the other half received NH4+. At 35 degrees C the plants had the lowest biomass production with respect to 25 degrees C (optimal temperature) and 10 degrees C (cold stress), suggesting that tomato plants were most affected by heat stress. At 35 degrees C, there were also high levels of choline and proline due to the activation of Delta1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) and ornithine aminotransferase (OAT), and simultaneous inhibition of proline dehydrogenase (PDH) and proline oxidase (PO). However, plants with NH4+ as the N source exhibited reduced growth with respect to the plants fed with NO3-. This is interesting because, under heat stress (35 degrees C), biomass production, as well as proline and choline accumulation, in NH4+ fed plants was higher than in NO3- fed plants. From this, we concluded that tomato plants fed with NH4+ as the N source show higher tolerance to heat stress (35 degrees C) than plants fed with NO3-.

Abstract
The light-limitation hypothesis was tested to assess whether water turbidity had caused the decline of a Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadow in an area affected by a harbor. The annual growth, photosynthesis and rhizome starch concentrations of seagrass were measured and related to changes in light availability and dissolved nutrient concentration along a gradient of meadow degradation from areas close to the harbor outwards. Environmental and plant variables were measured in three stations placed along this gradient and compared with a reference station at an undisturbed meadow. The light attenuation coefficient (k) increased toward the inner harbor area, mainly due to sediment resuspension. The shoot density and leaf productivity of P. oceanica shoots were much lower in disturbed stations of the inner harbor area than in the outer, less disturbed station and the reference meadow. However, daily leaf carbon gains, calculated from the photosynthetic rates at saturating irradiance (P(max)) and the daily period in which seagrass receives light higher than its saturating irradiance (H(sat)), suggested positive C-balance in all stations. This was partly explained by photo-acclimatization of seagrass to the reduced light availability at the disturbed harbor stations (inner and intermediate), as indicated by the lengthening of H(sat) and the decrease in saturating irradiance (I(sat)) and respiratory demands. Despite photo-acclimatization, disturbed harbor stations showed less positive C-balance, seen not only in their lower leaf growth and biomass but also in a decrease in rhizome carbohydrate reserves (starch). Our results suggest that light reduction account for the reduced seagrass productivity and abundance. However, meadow decline (in terms of shoot mortality) in the harbor area is well above that predicted from similar light environments of nearby meadows or simulated in shading experiments. Thus, there are other factors than light limitation involved in seagrass mortality, most probably through more complex interactions (e.g. nutrient-epiphytes-grazers, water quality--siltation).

Abstract
Five young adult pet marmosets (Callithrix spp.) were presented with weight loss (5/5); fecal retention (3/5); diarrhea (2/5); impaired locomotion (3/5); anemia (4/4); hypoproteinemia or hypoalbuminemia (3/4); elevations of creatine phosphokinase, lactic dehydrogenase, and alanine aminotransferase (3/4); and renal failure with hypercholesterolemia (2/4). All anemic marmosets had low serum vitamin E levels. The anemia responded to vitamin E and selenium therapy in two marmosets. One of the five marmosets died before presentation, and two others died despite therapy. The two marmosets necropsied had degenerative myopathy, pyogranulomatous pansteatitis, and increased erythrophagocytosis and hemosiderosis. The striated muscle and adipose tissue of both marmosets were negative for coxsackievirus ribonucleic acid by in situ hybridization. These findings suggest that vitamin E deficiency may be involved in the development of anemia, myopathy, and steatitis in callitrichids; however, in some marmosets, underlying diseases such as chronic colitis may have influenced the development of anemia and impaired vitamin E status.

Abstract
TBT induces imposex and sterilisation in female Nucella lapillus. Interestingly, there are populations where individuals (both males and imposexed females) may suffer from a genetic aberration [Dumpton Syndrome (DS)] which results in the development of no penis (i.e. aphally). This anomaly confers a so far unexplained protection against TBT. Six populations with contrasting DS frequency were sampled; the imposex stage in females and the mean calibre of every vas deferens (VDC) were assessed. While the sex ratio in the 600 specimens examined was close to 1, aphally was more frequent in females than in males (31 and 7%, respectively). VDC was significantly higher in normal than in aphallic (DS) specimens, independently of sex and/or site. It is concluded that the vas deferens imposed by TBT onto DS females is less prone to develop thick enough so as to interfere with normal egg laying.

Abstract
The role of S-assimilation and the biosynthesis of cysteine and glutathione were studied during the response to salt stress of wild-type and salt-tolerant transgenic Brassica napus L. (canola) plants overexpressing a vacuolar Na+/H+ antiporter. A 3-fold increase in cysteine and glutathione content was observed in wild-type plants exposed to salt stress, but not in the transgenic plants. The induction of cysteine and glutathione synthesis during salt stress in the wild-type plants suggests a possible protective mechanism against salt-induced oxidative damage. On the other hand, the salt-tolerant transgenic plants did not show significant changes in either cysteine or glutathione content, confirming the role of vacuolar Na+ accumulation and ion homeostasis in salt tolerance.
