[Declared experiences of risky sexual behaviors in relation to alcohol consumption in the first year of college.]

OBJECTIVE

In college students, higher risk alcohol consumption (drunkenness and binge drinking-BD) has negative consequences on their development and and probably facilitates risk sexual behaviors. The objective was to study if risky sexual behaviors when consuming alcohol (RSBA) are associated with higher risk consumption.

METHODS

Cross-sectional multicenter study with UniHcos Project, 1^st year university students from 11 universities in Spain, academic years 2011-2012 to 2017-2018 data. This data were collected by self-administered questionnaire. A uni and bivariate analysis was performed, evaluated the statistical significance of the differences in prevalence with chi-square. Mean and standard deviation were used for quantitative variables and Student's t test statistic was used.

RESULTS

9,862 subjects (72.2% women). 90.3% reported having consumed alcohol and 60.9% had drunk the last year, 49% BD in last month. It was deteded in men, significantly higher consumption in the last month and drunkenness. Last month consumption and drunkenness were significantly higher in men and in <21 years. The RSBA were significantly higher among who were drunk (15.7% unprotected sex, 1.9% sexual abuse and 0.7% taking sexual advantage) and had BD (17.1%, 1.9% and 0.7 %). Women with both risk consumptions had more sexual abuse (2.2%), and men had greater behaviors of taking sexual advantage of someone (drunk: 1.2%; BD: 1.3%).

CONCLUSIONS

Alcohol consumption was above similar groups. BD consumption was similar by gender and age. Risk sexual behaviors appear mainly in problematic consumption. Gender differences are not detected in alcohol consumers in unprotected sex but deteded in the rest.

The effects of different types of physical exercise on physical and cognitive function in frail institutionalized older adults with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

The continuous increase in the life expectancy of older adults (elderly people) has generated interest in research into frail-aged people and their physical and mental well-being.

OBJECTIVES

To verify the different effects of two programs of physical exercise (strength training-TG, and callisthenic training-MG) on the cognitive state, functionality, stability and general health of frail-aged institutionalized older adults.

DESIGN

This study was a block randomized controlled trial.

SETTING

The study was conducted in geriatric units of the San Rosendo Foundation.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 77 institutionalized frail-aged people (70.1% female, aged 84.8±7.9) took part.

INTERVENTIONS

The TG carried out a strength program with therabands®; The MG performed an exercise program of multi-callisthenics, and the CG did not carry out any physical exercise.

MEASUREMENTS

The following measurements were used: Minimental test, Pfeiffer test, SF-12, Barthel test, Five times sit-to-stand and a pressure platform.

RESULTS

The TG program generated some improvement in cognitive state and functional independence, while in the physical and mental component of the S-12, significant improvement was generated. The program undertaken by MG demonstrated a tendency to the stabilization of the above mentioned parameters, while the GC demonstrated a tendency to deterioration.

CONCLUSION

Physical exercise, whether it be the strength program, or the multi-calisthenics program, is an effective method for improving and maintaining health, cognitive state, functional independence and stability in frail-aged institutionalized people.

SELECTION OF TALENTS IN HANDBALL: ANTHROPOMETRIC AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT Introduction: Anthropometric and physical performance parameters that determine competitive levels in handball need to be carefully studied to identify which of them can bring the optimal contribution when the talents for this sport are selected. Objective: To identify which anthropometric and physical performance variables evaluated in the basic categories (infantile, under-15 and cadet, under-17) have the greatest influence on professional levels attained by male and female handball players throughout their sports careers. Method: A total of 145 handball players (75 males and 70 females) participated in the study. Participants were initially evaluated during the season 1998-99 and their performance levels were supervised until March 2013. The resulting data were classified according to the performance level (regional n = 109; national n = 36), gender, and category (infantile, cadet). Results: The MANCOVA analysis indicated that the player’s maturation stage is one of the main parameters to be accounted for when selecting the variables that should configure a talent detection model for handball, which is also conditioned by sex. Anthropometric variables are highly influential in the case of male players, while physical performance variables (squat jump, counter movement jump, counter movement jump with arm, 10x5m shuttle run, 20 m shuttle run, and VO2 max) have a similar effect in males and females. Conclusion: The study of changes occurring in anthropometric and physical performance variables may yield useful information to detect talents in handball, and maturation is a key factor to choose the most appropriate variables.
