Abstract
The effectiveness of command-and-control policies related to tobacco use has been studied in high-income countries. Still, there is limited evidence of their effects in low and middle-income countries. We explore the case of Colombia, a country that introduced a business-supported smoking ban in bars and restaurants and all public indoor spaces in 2010. This paper investigates the effect of smoking bans in bars and restaurants on smoking prevalence in Bogotá, Colombia. In this paper, we use the matching with triple-differences technique in analyzing household consumption data from the 2007 and 2011 quality of life surveys. This is done by exploiting their geographical proximity and variation in the density of commercial areas. We found that after the smoking ban implementation, smoking prevalence reduced in households near high-density commercial blocks compared to households near low-density commercial blocks (-10.8 pp.). The impact is larger for households with children and older household heads. Since households near high-density commercial blocks are more frequently exposed to smoking than households near low-density commercial blocks, the former would be more willing to internalize the smoking de-normalization process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since 1993, Colombia has had a mandatory social health insurance scheme that aims to provide universal health coverage to all citizens. However, some contributory regime participants purchase voluntary private health insurance (VPHI) to access better quality health services (i. e., physicians and hospitals), shorter waiting times, and a more extensive providers' network. This article aims to estimate the price elasticity of demand for the VPHI market in Colombia. METHODS We use data from the 2016-2017 consumer expenditure national survey and apply a Heckman selection model to address the selection problem into purchasing private insurance. Using the estimation results to further estimate the price semi-elasticity for VPHI, we then calculate the price elasticity for the households' health expenditure and acquisition of VHPI. RESULTS Our main findings indicate that a 1% VPHI price increase reduces the proportion of households affiliated to a VPHI in the country by about 2.32% to 4.66%, with robust results across sample restrictions. There are relevant differences across age groups, with younger households' heads being less responsive to VPHI price changes. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the VPHI demand in Colombia is noticeably elastic, and therefore tax policy changes can have a significant impact on public health insurance expenditures. The government should estimate the optimal VPHI purchase in order to reduce any welfare loss that the current arrangement might be generating.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper investigates the impact of adopting quality management standards like ISO9001 on a firm's performance and the mediator role of human capabilities within firms in this relationship. The article analyses this mediator effect in the context of an emerging economy that set a policy reform aimed at increase ISO adoption and with a large share of informal labour markets.
Design/methodology/approach
This study implements a quantitative approach, applying a Difference in Differences-DiD model with a Propensity Score Matching on fixed effect panel data analysis of a sample of certified and non-certified firms using firm-level data obtained from the national statistics office of Colombia. This methodology allows having comparable groups before the policy implementation. It reduces differences in observable characteristics and controls for parallel trends in primary outcomes before the policy reform.
Findings
The research findings suggest that after Colombian policy reform of the quality system (2006), firms that adopted ISO 9001 certification increased innovation (5.2%), labour productivity (4.6%), sales (5.7%) and wages (4.9%). Furthermore, it shows that the share of permanent workers is an essential mediator in adopting quality programs. Adopters firms with a large percentage of temporary workers weaken their initial investment in quality infrastructure.
Research limitations/implications
This research does not consider one key aspect. This is the lack of information about the organizational culture inside Colombian organizations that is related to a successful implementation of Quality Management standards like ISO 9001. However, it does not affect the conclusion about the mediation effect of human capital in the relationship between ISO 9001 and firm performance.
Practical implications
The study covered all the Colombian manufacturing firms with ten or more employees. It provides critical insight for managers to value implementing ISO 9001 certification and appropriately put attention to enhancing their firms' human capital in emerging economies. Also, a policy implication of the paper is that governmental efforts to strengthen quality infrastructure in emerging economies should also include steps to increase a firm's investment in human capital.
Originality/value
This study provides further support for government policies to strengthen firms' incentives to adopt modern management practices. The strong effects of implementing these management practices on sales, productivity and innovation have been identified. Furthermore, the investments in quality infrastructure must be accompanied by investment in human capital and workforce stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco prevalence in Colombia is small compared with other Latin America despite the nation's tobacco taxes being among the lowest in the region. However, tobacco taxes have increased several times during the last decade, and large increases in 2010 and 2016 impacted consumer prices. OBJECTIVE This paper aims to estimate the price smoking participation elasticity (PPE) in Colombia, with specific reference to regional increases in consumer prices after 2010 tax policy changes. METHODS The PPE is computed using logistic regression based on individual-level data from the National Psychoactive Substances Consumption Survey for 2008 and 2013. Our specific focus is state-level variation in Colombian cigarette prices between 2008 and 2013 induced by the tax hike in 2010. RESULTS The estimated PPE in Colombia is around -0.66 (p value=0.046). We find almost no differences across socioeconomic level, but price sensitivity was greater for women than men, and for relatively older individuals (ages 51-64). CONCLUSIONS PPE for Colombia is above estimates for comparable middle-income countries such as Mexico. As a result, current estimates for health gains of tax policies are likely to be underestimated. Moreover, in contrast with the literature, we find that the PPE for the youth (≤25 years) is lower than older age groups, and there is no evidence of a prominent socio-economic status (SES) gradient.

Abstract
The discretization of the electronic structure of nanometer-size solid systems due to quantum confinement and the concomitant modification of their physical properties is one of the cornerstones for the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this Letter we demonstrate that the Bragg scattering of Cu(111) surface-state electrons by the periodic arrangement of tetracyanoquinodimethane molecules at the edges of self-assembled molecular islands, along with the dominant contribution of backscattering processes to the electronic density of states, discretizes the possible values of the electron momentum parallel to the island edge. The electronic structure consists thus of a discrete number of subbands which occur in a nonclosed space, and therefore without quantum confinement.

Abstract
Single-molecule magnets based on lanthanide double-deckers are attracting significant attention due to their unrivaled single-ion anisotropy. To exploit their fascinating electronic and magnetic properties in devices for information storage or spin transport, studies on the preservation or variation of electronic and magnetic functionalities upon adsorption on surfaces are necessary. Herein, we introduced a comprehensive scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface science study, complemented by density functional theory (DFT) simulations, of a recently synthesized single-molecule magnet based on porphyrazine deckers, conveniently equipped with ethyl moieties to make them soluble and sublimable. We demonstrated that the double-decker species were intactly adsorbed on Au(111), Ag(111), and Cu(111) in a flat-on fashion and self-assembled in hexagonal close-packed layers. Systematic multi- and monolayer XPS was performed on the surface-confined species, confirming the preservation of the electronic properties of the ligands and the lanthanide center upon adsorption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a multifaceted intervention for preterm and low birth weight infants and their parents. Short- and mid-term benefits of KMC on survival, neurodevelopment, breastfeeding, and the quality of mother-infant bonding were documented in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Colombia from 1993 to 1996. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the persistence of these results in young adulthood. METHODS From 2012 to 2014, a total of 494 (69%) of the 716 participants of the original RCT known to be alive were identified; 441 (62% of the participants in the original RCT) were re-enrolled, and results for the 264 participants weighing ≤1800 g at birth were analyzed. The KMC and control groups were compared for health status and neurologic, cognitive, and social functioning with the use of neuroimaging, neurophysiological, and behavioral tests. RESULTS The effects of KMC at 1 year on IQ and home environment were still present 20 years later in the most fragile individuals, and KMC parents were more protective and nurturing, reflected by reduced school absenteeism and reduced hyperactivity, aggressiveness, externalization, and socio-deviant conduct of young adults. Neuroimaging showed larger volume of the left caudate nucleus in the KMC group. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that KMC had significant, long-lasting social and behavioral protective effects 20 years after the intervention. Coverage with this efficient and scientifically based health care intervention should be extended to the 18 million infants born each year who are candidates for the method.

Abstract
This study sets out to make a worthwhile contribution to healthcare personnel working in the prison sector by providing theoretical and technical knowledge to enable them to better understand and care for people in prison who suffer from these disorders. As far as we know, the cognitive integration of a descriptive and comprehensive model, bearing in mind a theory of the observed phenomenon acts as an emotionally constraining factor for the anxieties we suffer in the therapeutic relationship with our patients. Consequently we also wish to contribute with this study to improving the emotional resources of personnel working in a context as anxiety-provoking as is a prison, while also pointing out the risks inherent to any theory that might be used to conceal clinical realities.

Abstract
Following the resection of newly diagnosed or recurrent glioblastomas, local implantation of carmustine-impregnated biodegradable wafers (Gliadel) in the resection cavity constitutes an adjuvant therapy that can improve the possibilities of survival. However, some precautions should be taken regarding Gliadel implantation. We report three cases in whom patients with glioblastoma multiforme were implanted with fibrin glue-secured Gliadel after the lateral ventricles had been opened, and who later developed severe hydrocephalus leading to death. Although Gliadel may be an important adjunct to treatment, opening of the ventricles during surgery as part of its application should be considered a contra-indication.

Abstract
The (100) surface of magnetic gamma'-Fe4N films epitaxially grown on Cu(100) shows a (2 x 2)p4gm reconstruction. The atom positions determined experimentally are properly accounted for by first-principles total energy calculations, which further reveal that the (2 x 2)p4gm reconstruction requires the topmost Fe4N2 plane to be magnetic and effectively decoupled from the rest of the crystal and that it originates from the perpendicular crossing of one-dimensionally dimerized Fe chains.

Abstract
Reports on the genetic variability and evolution of natural populations of DNA viruses are scarce in comparison with the abundant information on the variability of RNA viruses. Geminiviruses are plant viruses with circular ssDNA genomes that are replicated by the host plant DNA polymerases. Whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses (WTG) are the agents of important diseases of crop plants and best exemplify emerging plant viruses. In this report we have analyzed the genetic diversity of cotton leaf curl geminivirus (CLCuV), a typical emerging WTG. No genetic differentiation was observed between isolates from different host plant species or geographic regions. Thus, the analyzed isolates represented a unique, undifferentiated population. Genetic variability, estimated as nucleotide diversities at synonymous positions in open reading frames (ORFs) for the AC1 (=replication) protein and coat protein (CP = AV1), was very high, exceeding the values reported for different genes in several plant and animal RNA viruses. This was unexpected in a virus that uses the DNA replication machinery of its eukaryotic host. Diversities at nonsynonymous positions, on the other hand, indicated that variability may be constrained in the genome of CLCuV. The ratio of nonsynonymous-to-synonymous substitutions varied for the different ORFs: they were higher for CP than for AC1 and lower still for the AC4 and AV2 ORFs, which overlap AC1 and CP ORFs, respectively. Analysis of nucleotide diversities at synonymous and nonsynonymous positions of the AC4 and AV2 ORFs suggest that their evolution is constrained by AC1 and CP, respectively. Data suggest that AC4 and AV2 are new genes that may have originated by overprinting on the preexistent AC1 and CP genes. Evidence for recombination was found for the AC1 and CP ORFs and for the noncoding intergenic region (IR). Data indicate that the origin of replication is a major recombination point in the IR, but not the only one. Analyses of the IR also suggest that recombinants may be frequent in the population and that recombination may have an important role in the generation of CLCuV variability.

Abstract
Parvovirus minute virus of mice strain i (MVMi) infects committed granulocyte-macrophage CFU and erythroid burst-forming unit (CFU-GM and BFU-E, respectively) and pluripotent (CFU-S) mouse hematopoietic progenitors in vitro. To study the effects of MVMi infection on mouse hemopoiesis in the absence of a specific immune response, adult SCID mice were inoculated by the natural intranasal route of infection and monitored for hematopoietic and viral multiplication parameters. Infected animals developed a very severe viral-dose-dependent leukopenia by 30 days postinfection (d.p.i.) that led to death within 100 days, even though the number of circulating platelets and erythrocytes remained unaltered throughout the disease. In the bone marrow of every lethally inoculated mouse, a deep suppression of CFU-GM and BFU-E clonogenic progenitors occurring during the 20- to 35-d.p.i. interval corresponded with the maximal MVMi production, as determined by the accumulation of virus DNA replicative intermediates and the yield of infectious virus. Viral productive infection was limited to a small subset of primitive cells expressing the major replicative viral antigen (NS-1 protein), the numbers of which declined with the disease. However, the infection induced a sharp and lasting unbalance of the marrow hemopoiesis, denoted by a marked depletion of granulomacrophagic cells (GR-1(+) and MAC-1(+)) concomitant with a twofold absolute increase in erythroid cells (TER-119(+)). A stimulated definitive erythropoiesis in the infected mice was further evidenced by a 12-fold increase per femur of recognizable proerythroblasts, a quantitative apoptosis confined to uninfected TER-119(+) cells, as well as by a 4-fold elevation in the number of circulating reticulocytes. Therefore, MVMi targets and suppresses primitive hemopoietic progenitors leading to a very severe leukopenia, but compensatory mechanisms are mounted specifically by the erythroid lineage that maintain an effective erythropoiesis. The results show that infection of SCID mice with the parvovirus MVMi causes a novel dysregulation of murine hemopoiesis in vivo.

Abstract
A flow-injection spectrophotometric method for determining dopamine and methyldopa is described. It is based on the oxidation reaction with metaperiodate. Calibration graphs were linear up to 2 x 10(-4) mol/l catecholamines. The method allows the measurement of 130 samples per hour and was successfully applied to the analyis of pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
An efficient procedure for the insertion of genetic markers into a large proportion of the mouse haemopoietic system was developed, based on the in vitro expansion of retrovirally infected bone marrow and selection of the transduced cells. Bone marrow cells harvested 4 d after 5-FU treatment were incubated under IL-3/SCF stimulation and their growth dynamic, susceptibility to retroviral infection and reconstitution capacity evaluated throughout the incubation period. On the third day of culture a maximum expansion in the CFU-GM and CFU-S12 progenitor pools was observed (130- and 15-fold, respectively), with no apparent impairment in long-term repopulating precursors. This expansion was, however, accompanied by a net decrease in the CFU-GM susceptibility to the infection by supernatants containing a Moloney-derived ecotropic retroviral vector carrying the neor gene. The designed protocol thus involved the infection of freshly harvested 5-FU-treated bone marrow, followed by expansion under IL-3/SCF stimulation and selection for resistance to G418. This procedure allowed us to harvest up to 780 CFU-GM and 50 CFU-S12 per 10(5) bone marrow cells, free from non-genetically marked progenitors. Most of the animals reconstituted with the transduced marrow bore, for at least 5 months, a very high proportion of bone marrow, spleen and thymus cells tagged with the reporter gene. These results, together with the high percentage of haemopoietic precursors bearing the neor gene and expressing resistance to G418 5 months after the transplantation indicates that long-term lympho-haemopoietic repopulating cells were efficiently transduced and selected in vitro under conditions that preserve their self-renewal and differentiation properties. This gene-transfer methodology may improve the development of gene therapy protocols where the purging of non-transduced precursors would guarantee a lasting and uniform expression of exogenous genes.
