Abstract
In this study, the effect of probiotic supplementation via drinking water or feed on the performance of broiler chickens experimentally infected with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria acervulina (5 × 10(4)), Eimeria maxima and Eimeria tenella (2 × 10(4) each one) at 14 days of age was evaluated. Two hundred and forty 1-day-old Ross 308 male chicks were separated into eight equal groups with three replicates. Two of the groups, one infected with mixed Eimeria oocysts and the other not, were given a basal diet and served as controls. The remaining groups were also challenged with mixed Eimeria species and received the basal diet and either water supplemented with probiotic (three groups) or probiotic via feed (two groups); the probiotic used consisted of Enterococcus faecium #589, Bifidobacterium animalis #503 and Lactobacillus salivarius #505 at a ratio of 6:3:1. Probiotic supplementation was applied either via drinking water in different inclusion rates (groups W1, W2 and W3) or via feed using uncoated (group FN) or coated strains (group FC). The last group was given the basal diet supplemented with the anticoccidial lasalocid at 75 mg/kg. Each experimental group was given the corresponding diet or drinking water from day 1 to day 42 of age. Throughout the experimental period of 42 days, body weight and feed intake were recorded weekly and feed conversion ratios were calculated. Seven days after infection, the infected control group presented the lowest weight gain values, while probiotics supplied via feed supported growth to a comparable level with that of the lasalocid group. Probiotic groups presented lesion score values and oocyst numbers that were lower than in control infected birds but higher than in the lasalocid group. In the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, the highest villous height values were presented by probiotic groups. In conclusion, a mixture of probiotic substances gave considerable improvement in both growth performance and intestinal health in comparison with infected control birds and fairly similar improvement to an approved anticoccidial during a mixed Eimeria infection.

Abstract
In gated semiconductor devices, the space charge layer that is located under the gate electrode acts as the functional element. With increasing gate voltage, the microscopic process forming this space charge layer involves the subsequent ionization or electron capture of individual dopants within the semiconductor. In this Letter, a scanning tunneling microscope tip is used as a movable gate above the (110) surface of n-doped GaAs. We study the build-up process of the space charge region considering donors and visualize the charge states of individual and multi donor systems. The charge configuration of single donors is determined by the position of the tip and the applied gate voltage. In contrast, a two donor system with interdonor distances smaller than 10 nm shows a more complex behavior. The electrostatic interaction between the donors in combination with the modification of their electronic properties close to the surface results in ionization gaps and bistable charge switching behavior.

Abstract
Clavicle fractures are most common in children. Due to the thick periosteum that provides appositional bone proliferation on the one hand and a high potential of the medial physis for longitudinal growth on the other hand the fractures have an enormous healing potential. Both factors are also responsible for good fracture remodeling. In adolescents, the periosteal tube gets thinner and fracture types correspond to fractures in adults. Most fractures heal with good results after conservative treatment. In this article clavicle fractures in children and adolescents and options for therapy including the rare surgical treatment depending on different fracture localizations and morphologies are discussed.

Abstract
1. Plants and their biologically active chemical constituents, sometimes called secondary metabolites or bioactives, present numerous opportunities for the improvement of livestock production by inclusion in the diet. 2. Many such plant derived materials have well established therapeutic values in man; however, their potential as feed additives in animal production, particularly of poultry, remains largely unexploited. 3. There is increasing evidence indicating that they can be efficient in controlling diseases, and plant bioactives may also influence production parameters such as feed efficiency and product quality. 4. It has been reported that they may even replicate some of the effects of antibiotic growth promoters, which were banned from use in Europe from 2006. 5. This review assesses the status of plant bioactives in poultry production and their mode of action on avian physiology, particularly in the digestive tract.

Abstract
We measured the ionization threshold voltage of individual impurities close to a semiconductor-vacuum interface, where we use the STM tip to ionize individual donors. We observe a reversed order of ionization with depth below the surface, which proves that the binding energy is enhanced towards the surface. This is in contrast to the predicted reduction for a Coulombic impurity in the effective mass approach. We can estimate the binding energy from the ionization threshold and show experimentally that in the case of silicon doped gallium arsenide the binding energy gradually increases over the last 1.2 nm below the (110) surface.

Abstract
The charge state of individually addressable impurities in semiconductor material was manipulated with a scanning tunneling microscope. The manipulation was fully controlled by the position of the tip and the voltage applied between tip and sample. The experiments were performed at low temperature on the (110) surface of silicon doped GaAs. Silicon donors up to 1 nm below the surface can be reversibly switched between their neutral and ionized state by the local potential induced by the tip. By using ultrasharp tips, the switching process occurs close enough to the impurity to be observed as a sharp circular feature surrounding the donor. By utilizing the controlled manipulation, we were able to map the Coulomb potential of a single donor at the semiconductor-vacuum interface.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diversion or distraction of auditory attention is a core principle of tinnitus retraining therapy as introduced by P. Jastreboff and J. Hazell. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a different form of attention diversion in tinnitus therapy. METHODS AND PATIENTS In a prospective and randomized study, 40 patients suffering from chronic tinnitus were assigned to two different groups, A or B. All patients received appropriate counselling and were instructed in relaxation training. Patients in group A learned to distract attention away from the tinnitus by using sound or music. White noise generators or hearing aids were applied in this group. Patients in group B were instructed to direct their attention away from the tinnitus using imagination that was facilitated by the use of light and warmth stimuli as distracters. Different standardized questionnaires were used for an evaluation of therapy effectiveness. RESULTS In both groups, patients were significantly less annoyed and disabled by their tinnitus immediately after therapy and after 6 months. Tinnitus annoyance still proved to be reduced 1 year after the end of the therapy. There were no significant differences in the effects of each treatment. CONCLUSIONS Attention diversion is an important method for decreasing tinnitus-related distress. Patients should be instructed to use not only auditory but also visual and thermal sensations in order to distract attention away from their tinnitus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Three children, ranging in age from 2 to 6 months, had diffuse and homogeneously opaque corneas, clinically consistent with congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy. Bilateral elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was a feature in all three children. METHODS Initially, all patients underwent glaucoma surgery to reduce IOP. Subsequently, a penetrating keratoplasty was performed in one eye of each patient to clear the visual axis. The excised corneal button was examined by light microscopy and by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS Postoperatively, all patients maintained clear corneal grafts. Results of histopathologic examination showed an absence of the endothelial cell layer in all patients. The presence of a variably thick collagenous layer posterior to the anterior banded zone of Descemet's membrane and the absence of endothelial cells were noted on transmission electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed absent, or scanty, and abnormal endothelial cells. CONCLUSION The authors describe three patients with a clear association between congenital glaucoma and congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy. This combination should be suspected where persistent and total corneal opacification fails to resolve after normalization of IOP.

Abstract
The transepithelial resistance of confluent epithelial cell monolayers was monitored to investigate the influence of basic amino acids, Ca2+, protamine and protons on tight junction electrical resistance. In an accompanying paper we investigated the effect of these substances on the lamellar/hexagonal II phase transition in reconstituted phospholipid membranes containing phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine. We conclude that the permeability of tight junctions may be described by a lipid phase equilibrium where the lamellar phase corresponds to an open state and the hexagonal lipid phase to the closed state of the cell contact. This dynamic lipid model is well suited to describe the morphological as well as functional properties of the tight junctions.
