The uphill struggles of carsharing in the Netherlands

The current mobility system relies heavily on privately owned cars, which results in high levels of emissions, material use, and use of scarce public space. Carsharing is a mobility innovation offering consumers on-demand, short-term access to cars. By changing consumption patterns and reducing car ownership, carsharing has great potential to contribute to a sustainability transition of the mobility system. Even so, carsharing only satisfies a small portion of today's mobility needs and has difficulties becoming mainstream. This study investigates the upscaling trajectory of carsharing in the Netherlands. We structure the analysis along the lines of the multilevel perspective and include economic, technological, sociocultural, and policy factors that shape carsharing growth. The results demonstrate how car ownership is entrenched in the social and economic fabric, and the specific barriers this poses to carsharing. Moreover, we find some forms of carsharing risk extending private car ownership rather than challenging it. The environmental outcomes of carsharing are not predetermined but depend on the trajectories key actors take during upscaling. Our analysis highlights the importance of studying innovations in the context of the consumption-production systems in which they emerge.

[Atopic eczema: psychophysiological reactivity with standardized stressors]

In 18 atopic eczema patients with active symptomatology and 15 control subjects a comparison of reactivity to psychological stressors was made. The physiological measures were heart rate, peripheral vasomotor response, skin resistance level, spontaneous fluctuations of the skin resistance, and forearm skin temperature. In addition, self-ratings of subjective state, situational anxiety, and social anxiety were assessed. Mental arithmetic performed undisturbed and in distracting conditions, and anticipation of the latter and of having to speak in public served as stressors. The results show higher reaction values of the eczema patients for heart rate, peripheral vasomotor response, fluctuations of skin resistance and subjective tension. A subgroup of patients with extreme skin irritation (itching) reacted with an elevation of skin temperature, in contrast to control subjects and patients with less marked itching, in whom skin temperature dropped slightly. The results suggest that atopic eczema may have a psychophysiological component.

Time estimation of depressive patients: the influence of interval content

Duration judgements for intervals of different lengths and content were studied in depressive in-patients (n = 47) and a control sample of surgical in-patients (n = 16). As suggested by research on non-clinical subjects, tasks during the intervals influenced the depressed patients' duration judgements. Severely depressed endogenous depressives (n = 17) over-estimated time when left completely unoccupied or when attending to tasks requiring concentration. Endogenous depressives (n = 17) remitted with regard to subjective depression but, exhibiting signs of psychomotor retardation, selectively over-estimated time when required to concentrate under time pressure. Neurotic/reactive depressives (n = 13) with an intermediate level of subjective depression and almost normal psychomotor functioning did not over-estimate any of these intervals. Time estimations of patients and controls did not differ for intervals in the range of seconds and minutes requiring attention to time only, and for a longer part of the experimental session. Alteration of time estimation and results of a time experience inventory corresponded for endogenous depressives but not for neurotic/reactive depressives. Results are discussed in terms of the influence of affective state and subjective concentration effort on the over-estimations observed.
