New frontiers in imaging, anatomy, and mechanics of crocodylian jaw muscles

New imaging and biomechanical approaches have heralded a renaissance in our understanding of crocodylian anatomy. Here, we review a series of approaches in the preparation, imaging, and functional analysis of the jaw muscles of crocodylians. Iodine-contrast microCT approaches are enabling new insights into the anatomy of muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues of embryonic as well as adult specimens of alligators. These imaging data and other muscle modeling methods offer increased accuracy of muscle sizes and attachments without destructive methods like dissection. 3D modeling approaches and imaging data together now enable us to see and reconstruct 3D muscle architecture which then allows us to estimate 3D muscle resultants, but also measurements of pennation in ways not seen before. These methods have already revealed new information on the ontogeny, diversity, and function of jaw muscles and the heads of alligators and other crocodylians. Such approaches will lead to enhanced and accurate analyses of form, function, and evolution of crocodylians, their fossil ancestors and vertebrates in general.

Participant Outcomes of a Student-Run, Intensive, Short-Term, Task-Specific Rehabilitation Program for Individuals Post-Stroke

Stroke survivors continue to face chronic disability and limited access to early, continuous, and long-term rehabilitation. This pilot study examined the impact of a 6-day, intensive, short-term, task-specific rehabilitation program (ISTRP) on outcomes post-stroke as part of a service-learning experience (SLE) for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. Participants (n=19) post-stroke completed a 6-day, student-led ISTRP. Outcome measures were used to assess balance, functional gait, upper extremity motor impairment, and self-reported recovery. Significant differences from pre- to post-intervention were found for all outcome measures (p<0.05) except for the Stroke-Impact Scale-16. This pilot study addresses a gap in literature and suggests an ISTRP should be further explored while integrating other allied health disciplines.

Molecular qubits based on potentially nuclear-spin-free nickel ions

Molecular qubits with the longest coherence times thus far are based on nuclear-spin-carrying central ions. These nuclear spins can cause quantum state leakage, which is detrimental to quantum algorithm performance. We present two novel molecular qubits based on potentially nuclear spin-free Ni in the formal oxidation state 3+. (d₂₀-PPh₄)[Ni(mnt)₂] (Ni-mnt, mnt^2- = maleonitrile-1,2-dithiolate) possesses a coherence time of up to 38.7 μs at 7 K. Functionalization of the dithiolate ligand decreases the coherence time by a factor of only four in (HNEt₃)[Ni(dip)₂] (Ni-dip, dip^2- = 3-(diphenylphosphoryl)-methylbenzene-1,2-dithiolate), indicating that monoanionic Ni-dithiolene complexes are promising and robust building blocks for polynuclear molecular qubit gates.

Quantitative prediction of nuclear-spin-diffusion-limited coherence times of molecular quantum bits based on copper(ii)

We have investigated the electron spin dynamics in a series of copper(ii) β-diketonate complexes both in frozen solutions and doped solids. We simulate the coherence decay quantitatively without fit parameters.

Tuning of molecular qubits: very long coherence and spin-lattice relaxation times

We report a pulsed EPR study on different transition metal phthalocyanines, elucidating the dependence of spin relaxation on solvent, ligand and metal ion. Coherence times of >40 µs and spin-lattice relaxation times of up to 2 s were found. Minimization of SOMO-environment overlap leads to increased coherence times.

[A Systematic Review of Personality Disorders and Addiction: Epidemiology, Course and Treatment]

AIM

This paper provides a systematic overview of the comorbidity of personality and addictive disorders including behavioural addictions.

METHOD

Systematic review.

RESULTS

Personality disorders and substance-related addictions show high comorbidity rates. This is equally true of behavioural addictions. Most empirical research is on comorbidity with borderline personality disorder. For treatment of individuals with dual diagnoses, three psychotherapies have been demonstrated to be effective. Pharmacotherapeutic approaches have hardly been investigated.

CONCLUSION

METHODologically integrative treatment represents therapy of choice for patients with dual diagnoses. Comorbidity of personality disorders and behavioural addictions needs further investigation.

Relation of plasma adiponectin levels and aortic stiffness after acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

BACKGROUND

Pulse wave velocity is a measure of aortic stiffness and an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Adiponectin is involved in atherosclerosis and inflammation. In the present study we aimed to explore the association between plasma adiponectin concentrations and pulse wave velocity in the acute phase after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

METHODS

Forty-six consecutive STEMI patients (mean age 57 ± 11 years) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Plasma adiponectin was measured 2 days after index event by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) was calculated by the transit-time method with the use of a velocity-encoded, phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance protocol.

RESULTS

Median plasma adiponectin concentration was 2385 ng/ml (interquartile range 1735-5403). Males had lower plasma adiponectin values than females and current smokers had lower values than non-smokers (all p<0.02). Adiponectin was significantly associated with PWV (r=0.505, p<0.001), age (r=0.437, p=0.002), and total cholesterol (r=0.468, p=0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed adiponectin as a predictor of PWV independently of age, sex, smoking status, total cholesterol, and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (p=0.027).

CONCLUSIONS

Plasma adiponectin concentrations are strongly associated with aortic stiffness in patients after acute STEMI treated with primary PCI. Our data support a possible role for adiponectin as an independent risk marker for increased aortic stiffness in STEMI patients.

A phase II study of outpatient first-line paclitaxel, carboplatin, and bevacizumab for advanced-stage epithelial ovarian, peritoneal, and fallopian tube cancer

The purpose of this study was to assess the response rate and toxicity of paclitaxel, carboplatin, and bevacizumab (PCB) primary induction therapy for the treatment of advanced-stage ovarian carcinoma. Twenty patients were treated with paclitaxel (175 mg/m(2)), carboplatin (AUC of 5 IV), and bevacizumab (15 mg/kg) of body weight; q21 days for six cycles. Bevacizumab was administered at cycles two through six. Patients received 116 cycles of PCB chemotherapy (median = 6, range 2-6) and were evaluable for toxicity assessment. Grade 3 and 4 neutropenia developed in 23.3% and 25% of cycles, with no incidence of grades 3/4 thrombocytopenia or anemia. Prior to cycle six, one patient was removed from the study due to grade 3 neuropathy and another patient was excluded due to clinical deterioration. There was no incidence of gastrointestinal perforations, and only two patients demonstrated grade 3 hypertension (HTN). No grade 4 HTN was observed. Eighteen patients were evaluated for response following induction therapy. Six demonstrated a complete response (30%) and ten exhibited a partial response (50%), resulting in a total response rate of 80%. One patient exhibited stable disease (5%), and one demonstrated disease progression (5%). The lack of bowel perforations and wound complications should mitigate some concerns regarding these side effects. This study suggests that first-line treatment with PCB can be safely administered to previously untreated advanced-stage ovarian carcinoma patients. The favorable toxicity results and reasonable response rate warrant additional study in a larger patient population.

Performance characteristics of soot primary particle size measurements by time-resolved laser-induced incandescence

A detailed analysis of various factors that influence the accuracy of time-resolved laser-induced incandescence for the determination of primary soot particles is given. As the technique relies on the measurement of the signal ratio at two detection times of the enhanced thermal radiation after an intense laser pulse, guidelines are presented for a suitable choice of detection times to minimize statistical uncertainty. An error analysis is presented for the issues of laser energy absorption, vaporization, heat conduction, and signal detection. Results are shown for a laminar ethene diffusion flame that demonstrate that concurring results are obtained for various laser irradiances, detection characteristics, and times of observation.

Environment, incidence, aetiology, epizootiology and immunoprophylaxis of soil-borne diseases in north-east Mexico

Within the framework of an extensive research programme, the socio-economic and environmental conditions which influence the emergence of soil-borne diseases in north-eastern Mexico were analysed. Furthermore, specimens collected from carcasses in the field were bacteriologically examined and the causal organisms of soil-borne diseases differentiated by means of gas chromatographic analysis of their metabolic products and the long-chained fatty acids contained in the cell. With experimental clostridial vaccines prepared with the Goettingen Bioreactor Technique, trials to protect cattle and guinea-pigs against gas gangrene were carried out. It was found that the farm structure and the dry climate as well as the specific soil conditions and plant cover favour the emergence of soil-borne diseases. Causal organisms B. anthracis, C. perfringens, C. sordellii, C. haemolyticum, C. chauvoei/septicum, C. novyi A, C. botulinum and site-specific field strains of clostridia were detected. Experimental site-specific vaccines proved to be highly efficient in protecting cattle and guinea pigs.

Reliability of the patient's history in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence

The reliability of a patient's history has been challenged in the preoperative evaluation of stress urinary incontinence. In this study, 122 consecutive patients referred to our Gynecology/Urology clinic were evaluated and an additional 32 control patients (continent women with no urinary symptoms) were evaluated. All patients answered a detailed 64-item questionnaire, and all patients received a complete urodynamic evaluation. Our detailed questionnaire provided a mean positive predictive value of 80% for genuine stress incontinence and 25% for detrusor instability. The conditions leading to a false positive history suggestive of genuine stress incontinence were detrusor instability and urethral diverticulum. The conditions leading to a false positive history suggestive of detrusor instability were urethritis, unstable urethra, vaginitis and polyuria. History alone can be misleading in diagnosing urinary incontinence.

Long-term stability of enzymes in human serum stored in liquid nitrogen

We analyzed the stability of the enzymes alpha-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1), alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1), alanine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.2), aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1), creatine kinase (EC 2.7.3.2), glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.3), gamma-glutamyltransferase (EC 2.3.2.2) and lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) of a human serum pool during storage in liquid nitrogen for a period of 10 months. Except amylase and creatine kinase, all enzymes were stable. Amylase increased in activity, creatine kinase activity decreased. Therefore, human serum stored at -196 degrees C can be used as satisfactory substitute for lyophilized enzyme control serum in internal quality control and stable enzyme material for optimization of methods.
