Abstract
We report the largest study on the prevalence and distribution of HCV genotypes in Spain (2000-2015), and we relate them with clinical, epidemiological and virological factors. Patients from 29 hospitals in 10 autonomous communities (Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla-Leon, Catalonia, Galicia, Canary Islands, Madrid Community, Valencian Community, Murcia Region and Basque Country) have been studied. Annual distribution of HCV genotypes and subtypes, as well as gender, age, transmission route, HIV and/or HBV coinfection, and treatment details were recorded. We included 48595 chronically HCV-infected patients with the following characteristics: median age 51 years (IQR, 44-58), 67.9% male, 19.1% HIV-coinfected, 23.5% HBV-coinfected. Parenteral transmission route was the most frequent (58.7%). Genotype distribution was 66.9% GT1 (24.9% subtype 1a and 37.9% subtype 1b), 2.8% GT2, 17.3% GT3, 11.4% GT4 and 0.1% GT5 and 0.02% GT6. LiPA was the most widely HCV genotyping test used (52.4%). HCV subtype 1a and genotypes 3 and 4 were closely associated with male gender, parenteral route of infection and HIV and HBV coinfection; in contrast, subtype 1b and genotype 2 were associated with female gender, nonparenteral route and mono-infection. Age was related to genotype distribution, and different patterns of distribution and biodiversity index were observed between different geographical areas. Finally, we describe how treatment and changes in transmission routes may have affected HCV genotype prevalence and distribution patterns. We present the most recent data on molecular epidemiology of hepatitis C virus in Spain. This study confirms that genotype distributions vary with age, sex, HIV and HBV coinfection and within geographical areas and epidemiological groups.

Abstract
This review outlines the main features of ciliate resting-cyst formation or encystment. It represents a strategy against several environmental stresses (such as starvation), which involves a highly gene-regulated cell differentiation process and originates a more resistant, differentiated form or resting cyst. This process is mainly characterized by drastic cytoplasmic dehydration that induces a general metabolic rate decrease, intense autophagic activity, the formation of a permeable cyst wall protecting the cell against the adverse environmental conditions, and a gene-silencing mechanism after opening the specific encystment genes.

Abstract
Nitrate reductase (NR) (EC 1.6.6.1) activity and NR activation state, i.e. activity in the presence of Mg(2+) relative to activity in the absence of Mg(2+), in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) leaves increased in the light and decreased in the dark. In contrast to leaves, NR activation state in the roots did not show light/dark-dependent changes. Root NR was activated by anoxia or by addition of uncoupler (CCCP) or mannose. These treatments decreased ATP levels in root tissue. On the contrary, high oxygen supply promoted some NR inactivation. When an extract from anoxic roots was preincubated with ATP, NR was gradually inactivated. Subsequent addition of 5'-AMP resulted in a remarkable reactivation of the enzyme. NR extracted from hyperoxygenated roots was activated by preincubation with 5'-AMP, and the process was reversed by ATP. These results suggest the participation of adenine nucleotides on the in vivo modulation of NR activity in cucumber roots. NR was activated in vivo by cellular acidification and inactivated by alkalinisation. The acid-induced activation of NR was greatly prevented by okadaic acid, a protein phosphatase inhibitor. Our data indicate that, as in barley roots, anoxia, uncouplers, and mannose feeding activate cucumber root NR, at least partly, by enhancing NR dephosphorylation via a decrease in the internal level of ATP and a concomitant cellular acidification.

Abstract
The dominantly inherited Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia cancer syndrome type 2B (MEN2B) is characterized by the presence of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), phaechromocytoma (PHAEO), mucosal neuromas, ganglioneuromas of the intestinal tract, skeletal and ophthalmic abnormalities. MEN2B has been associated with a specific point mutation in the tyrosine kinase domain of the RET proto-oncogene (918RET mutation). We investigated a Mexican patient MEN2B for the presence of the 918RET mutation using the polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction endonuclease digestion. We have detected this mutation in DNA from the patient's MTC, PHAEO, and peripheral blood cells, but not in DNA from the patient's mother, suggesting that this mutation arose de novo. Our results are in agreement with the suggestion that the 918RET mutation is present in a vast majority of MEN2B cases around the world.

Abstract
From a random amplified polymorphism cDNA study using vegetative, precystic and mature resting cysts of the ciliate Colpoda inflata, a stage-specific fragment was isolated from the resting cyst cDNA population. This fragment was used as an encystment probe to study the corresponding mRNA expression during this eukaryotic cell differentiation process. This transcript is accumulated in the resting cyst of this ciliate, and it is the first time that accumulation of specific mRNA molecules associated with the ciliate cryptobiosis process is reported. The meaning of this stored mRNA in microbial cryptobiotic stages is discussed.

Abstract
Metabolic labelling experiments performed with cultured pituitary lactotrophes revealed the presence of a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPtdIns) structurally related to GPtdIns lipids isolated from other cell types as demonstrated by: (i) metabolic incorporation of [3H]galactose, [3H]glucosamine and [3H]inositol into the polar inositolphosphoglycan moiety (InsPG) and [3H]myristate and [3H]palmitate into the diacylglycerol (DAG) backbone of GPtdIns; (ii) sensitivity of the [3H]labelled GPtdIns to nitrous acid deamination and; (iii) sensitivity of GPtdIns to phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns)-specific phospholipase C (PLC) hydrolysis. In cultured pituitary cells labelled to isotopic steady state with 10 microCi/ml of [3H]glucosamine, treatment with hypothalamic TRH (10(-6) M) induced a rapid and transient hydrolysis (ca. 50%) of the labelled GPtdIns. Moreover, as demonstrated in [3H]inositol labelled cells, treatment with thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) elicited the cleavage of [3H]GPtdIns in a similar manner, and this effect was followed by the phosphoinositide (PtdIns, PtdInsP and PtdInsP2) hydrolysis 30 s later. These results suggest that the phosphodiesterase cleavage of GPtdIns could be an early event implicated in TRH action in pituitary lactotrophes.

Abstract
The influence of a synthetic androgen R1881 upon hCG stimulated steroidogenesis in cultured rat testicular cells was investigated. Testicular cells were cultured for 8 days in medium alone and thereafter reincubated for 48 h with appropriate treatments before the collection of media for steroid RIA. Addition of R1881 (10(-6) M) resulted in an overall decrease of hCG (0.3-10 ng/ml) stimulated pregnenolone and progesterone production by cultured cells. The conversion of exogenous steroids of the delta 4 pathway (progesterone,17 alpha-OH-P and delta 4-A) was also studied in cultures supplemented with cyanoketone (10(-5) M) and/or spironolactone (10(-5) M) to prevent endogenous testosterone production. R1881 inhibited progesterone and 17 alpha-OH-P conversion to testosterone (T) and was ineffective when delta 4-A served as precursor for T biosynthesis. The inhibitory effect of R1881 upon Testosterone production was prevented by concomitant treatment with CPA. These observations suggest that R1881 decreases the hCG stimulated testosterone production via inhibition of CSCCE,3 beta-HSD,C17-20 Lyase and likely 17 alpha-Hydroxylase, whereas no effect on 17 beta-HSD could be observed.

Abstract
Serum levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone were measured in control and diabetic animals 5, 10 and 15 days after streptozotocin administration. The diabetic state produced a marked reduction in serum androgen levels 10 and 15 days after streptozotocin administration. Insulin treatment partially restored the circulating androgen levels when administered to diabetic rats.
