Magnesium sulfate therapy in certain emergency conditions

Intravenous magnesium has been suggested as a treatment for certain emergency conditions for more than 60 years. It is currently proposed to be beneficial in treating asthma, preeclampsia, eclampsia, myocardial infarction, and cardiac arrhythmias. The use and efficacy of the drug, however, are controversial. This article discusses the current state of magnesium sulfate research and therapy.

Mandatory seat belt laws in the states. A study of fatal and severe occupant injuries

This study examines the impact of mandatory seat belt laws on fatal and incapacitating injury rates in the states. Annual data for all 50 states for the period 1975-1991 are used. Pooled time series analysis is employed. The general conclusion that emerges from this analysis is that seat belt laws significantly impact state fatal injury rates. Primary enforcement and all-seat coverage provisions appear to be particularly effective in reducing fatality rates.

Comparative efficacies of soft contact lens disinfection systems against a fungal contaminant

The efficacies of five FDA-approved soft contact lens disinfecting solutions and heat disinfection were evaluated against the mold, Beauveria bassiana. Beauveria bassiana is a ubiquitous soil fungus with a demonstrated ability to grow into a soft contact lens matrix. A stock solution of the fungus was prepared and aliquots were added to each of the following disinfection solutions: ReNu Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution, Opti-Free, AOSEPT Disinfection/Neutralization Solution, Lens Plus Oxysept 1, UltraCare, and a Softmate Thermal Disinfecting Unit. Hydrogen peroxide systems were neutralized immediately using the manufacturer's recommended method. After 1 min, 5 mins, 15 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour, 4 hours, and 8 hours; samples were removed, added to neutralizing broth, and streaked onto Sabouraud's Dextrose Agar plates. Our results showed that hydrogen peroxide and heat disinfection were much more effective against Beauveria bassiana than Opti-Free or ReNu.

Argon laser trabeculoplasty: a review

A review of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) indicates that it appears to be a viable tool in the treatment of many forms of open angle glaucoma. It effectively lowers intraocular pressure with few relative risks to the patient. Unfortunately, its pressure-lowering effects diminish with time. The primary risks of ALT are a transient rise in IOP (20 percent incidence) and the development of peripheral anterior synechia (20-46 percent incidence). The Glaucoma Laser Trial (GLT), a multi-institutional study, is currently evaluating the long-term effect of ALT.
