Abstract
Zebrafish is known for its widespread neurogenesis and regenerative capacity, as well as several biological advantages, which turned it into a relevant animal model in several areas of research, namely in toxicological studies. Ketamine is a well-known anesthetic used both in human as well as veterinary medicine, due to its safety, short duration and unique mode of action. However, ketamine administration is associated with neurotoxic effects and neuronal death, which renders its use on pediatric medicine problematic. Thus, the evaluation of ketamine effects administration at early stages of neurogenesis is of pivotal importance. The 1-4 somites stage of zebrafish embryo development corresponds to the beginning of segmentation and formation of neural tube. In this species, as well as in other vertebrates, longitudinal studies are scarce, and the evaluation of ketamine long-term effects in adults is poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the effects of ketamine administration at the 1-4 somites stage, both in subanesthetic and anesthetic concentrations, in brain cellular proliferation, pluripotency and death mechanisms in place during early and adult neurogenesis. For that purpose, embryos at the 1-4 somites stage (10,5hours post fertilization - hpf) were distributed into study groups and exposed for 20minutes to ketamine concentrations at 0.2/0.8mg/mL. Animals were grown until defined check points, namely 50 hpf, 144 hpf and 7 months adults. The assessment of the expression and distribution patterns of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), of sex-determining region Y-box 2 (Sox 2), apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) was performed by Western-blot and immunohistochemistry. The results evidenced the main alterations in 144 hpf larvae, namely in autophagy and in cellular proliferation at the highest concentration of ketamine (0.8mg/mL). Nonetheless, in adults no significant alterations were seen, pointing to a return to a homeostatic stage. This study allowed clarifying some of the aspects pertaining the longitudinal effects of ketamine administration regarding the CNS capacity to proliferate and activate the appropriate cell death and repair mechanisms leading to homeostasis in zebrafish. Moreover, the results indicate that ketamine administration at 1-4 somites stage in the subanesthetic and anesthetic concentrations despite some transitory detrimental effects at 144 hpf, is long-term safe for CNS, which are newly and promising results in this research field.

Abstract
Cancers induced by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remain a significant public health threat, fueling the study of new therapies. Laurel (Laurus nobilis) compounds and extracts recently showed in vitro activity against HPV-transformed cell lines. This work aims to evaluate the in vivo efficacy and hepatic toxicity of a laurel extract in a transgenic mouse model of HPV16-induced cancer. The extract was administered in drinking water (20 mg per animal per day) for three consecutive weeks, using four experimental groups (n = 10) (group I: HPV16-/- without treatment, group II: treated HPV16-/-, group III: HPV16+/- without treatment and group IV: treated HPV16+/-). Following the treatment period, animals were sacrificed and skin samples were used to classify skin lesions histologically. Toxicological parameters included hematological and biochemical blood markers, splenic and hepatic histology and hepatic oxidative stress. The extract did not prevent the progression of HPV16-induced cutaneous lesions in this model. The treated wild-type animals showed mild hepatitis, while transgenic animals suffered weight loss. However, there were no changes concerning hematological, biochemical and hepatic oxidative stress markers.

Abstract
Heat waves, high light intensities and water deficit are becoming important threats in many important viticultural areas worldwide, so the implementation of efficient and cost-effective mitigation strategies is crucial for the production of premium wines while maintaining productivity. In this context, the foliar application of kaolin, a chemically inert mineral with excellent reflective properties, is being developed and experimented as a strategy to reduce the impact of heat and drought in Douro vineyards (Northern Portugal), already revealing promising results. In the present study we investigated if an improved antioxidant capacity is part of the beneficial effects of kaolin, by studying changes in the enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant system in leaves and berries (cv Touriga Nacional). Results showed that mature grape berries contained higher amounts of total phenols (40%), flavonoids (24%), anthocyanins (32%) and vitamin C (12%) than fruits from control vines, and important changes were also measured in leaves. In parallel, kaolin application improved the antioxidant capacity in berries, which was correlated with the observed increased content in secondary metabolites. Kaolin application also regulated secondary metabolism at the transcriptional level through the increase in the transcript abundance of genes encoding phenylalanine ammonia lyase and chalcone synthase.

Abstract
Localized ground-glass opacities (GGOs) have been recently individualized and account for between 2.9% and 19% of all pulmonary nodules detected in high-risk patients included in CT screening series for lung cancer. These opacities, nodular, lobular or flat, correspond to benign lesions (localised infectious and inflammatory diseases, focal interstitial fibrosis, and atypical alveolar hyperplasia) or malignant lesions (bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, early-stage adenocarcinoma and sometimes metastases). Localized GGOs are more likely to be malignant than solid nodules and prognosis is related to the percentage of the ground-glass component. However, doubling time of pure localized malignant GGOs is longer than mixed localized malignant GGOs and even longer than the doubling time of solid malignant nodules. Therefore, localized GGOs warrant a dedicated diagnostic workup.

Abstract
The effect of fortifying reconstituted skim milk with increasing levels of the beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) genetic variants A, B, and an A-B mixture on rennet-induced gelation was studied by small deformation-sensitive rheology. Free-zone capillary electrophoresis and high-sensitivity oscillatory rheology were used to elucidate the role of potential heterotypic associative interactions between whey proteins and casein in a mixed colloidal system, subjected to moderate heating (65 degrees C for 30 min) prior to renneting, on the gelling properties of the system. Increasing levels of added whey protein, in the concentration range of 0.225 to 1.35% of added protein, led to a concomitant progressive increase in the equilibrium shear storage modulus, G' (recorded after approximately 10,800 s), in the order beta-LG B > beta-LG A and beta-LG A-B, as the general expected consequence of the setup of denser casein gel networks. The preferential effect of beta-LG B over beta-LG A on the mechanical strength of the gels may be due to the formation of cross-links and aggregates involving whey proteins and rennet hydrolysis products or an increase in the size of the casein micelle caused by the grafting of beta-LG B to its surface, or both. The results of free-zone capillary electrophoresis were consistent with the notion that beta-LG B (and not beta-LG A) binds to the casein micelle under an optimal stoichiometry of 1:0.045 (mg/mg), even in the absence of heat treatment. The liquid-like character of the gel networks formed, tan delta, was a parameter sensitive to the level of addition of beta-LG A in particular. At low concentrations (up to 0.45%) of beta-LG A, tan delta increased by almost twice as much, which was interpreted as a result of the increase in the loss modulus, G'', of the sol fraction because of the presence of unbound beta-LG A. At greater incremental concentrations of beta-LG (>0.45%), the formation of smaller whey protein aggregates confined to the sol fraction may have led to a progressive decrease in tan delta. The critical gel time, t(gel), was also affected by the concentration of added whey protein and described 3 zones of behavior, irrespective of the type of whey protein variant. The critical gel time was slightly shorter for beta-LG B than for beta-LG A at 0.45% of added whey protein, but this difference became larger at 0.67%. Even when only beta-LG B was found to associate with casein prior to renneting, both beta-LG A and beta-LG B, either alone or mixed, had a profound influence on the mechanical strength and coagulation kinetics of the rennet-induced casein gels. This knowledge is expected to be useful to exert better control and optimize processing conditions during the manufacturing of cheese and cheese analogs.
