Abstract
Purpose Surveillance of different SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) is a crucial aspect in control of the pandemic. Although sequencing is the gold-standard to detect VOCs, it is labor intensive and is costly. We compared a cost-effective real-time PCR assay that detects single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of VOCs, with next generation sequencing (NGS) in surveillance of VOCs. Methods & Materials A total of 782 SARS CoV-2 PCR positive samples From May – August 2021 were screened using two variant RT-qPCR assays (Seegene Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Variant Assay I and II), which detects 7 SNPs in the spike protein assigning them to one of the VOCs. We compared the results of the variant RT-qPCR with Illumina (n=97) and Oxford Nanopore (n=53) platforms in a subset of samples (n=150). Sequences with > 25x coverage were used and assigned to a Pangolin lineage. Results 516 samples amplified for N501Y and HV69/70 deletion of the spike protein were assigned as alpha (B.1.1.7). Two samples with spike K417N mutation along with N501Y and E484K were considered to be beta (B.1.351) and 175 samples which are only positive for spike L452R mutation were considered to be delta (B.1.617). 120/156 samples designated as alpha, 22/175 designated as delta and 2 samples designated as beta by RT-qPCR were sequenced either by Illumina or Oxford nanopore platforms. The sequencing results showed a 100% accuracy with the variant RT-qPCR for identification of VOCs. Conclusion RT-qPCR that detected SNPs specific for VOCs, appear to be highly sensitive and specific in detection of VOCs and had a similar specificity of genomic sequencing. Therefore, this could be a rapid and less expensive method for surveillance of VOCs, in lower income countries. However, as it only detects specific SNPs, any emerging mutations of concern in these VOCs or newly emerging variants, will not be detected.

Background
High-quality heart failure (HF) discharge summary (DS) is the cornerstone of effective communication during the transition from specialists to primary care. The combination of continuing involvement of multidisciplinary members, varying individual tolerance to treatments, and the need for multiple investigations beget intricate HFrEF management. The quality of the information included in DS following HF-related hospitalisation varies widely and may be sub-optimal in communicating patient's in-hospital care, leading to inadequate compliance to guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) and increased risk of re-hospitalisation. Notwithstanding this real-world observation, there remains a paucity of consensus on the standard of measurements of HF DS.
Purpose
We aimed to optimise the transmission of information between patients and HF multidisciplinary members to improve adherence to GDMT, follow-up (F/U) care coordination and patient education in line with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recommendations.
Methods
A random sampling of the HFrEF cohort discharged from the cardiac unit at our institution following HF-related hospitalisation was performed across four distinct time points matched with respective interventions. Three iterative cycles (baseline analysis and two educational interventions – departmental teaching and dissemination of innovative mnemonics sheets – THE WET TO DRY [Figure 1]) were completed using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) methodology. The quality of patients DS was objectively analysed based on the inclusion of physiological and investigation parameters, in-patient treatment, initiation/titration of GDMT, F/U care coordination, and patient education.
Results
Sixty-six patients, mean±SD age 74.6±12.8y were enrolled between 2018–2021. The baseline reporting of presenting complaints, trigger and investigation findings were high and consistent throughout all cycles. A positive trend was observed in the reporting of physiological parameters and in-patient treatment post-interventions. Patient education and vaccines offered remained low despite improving compliance. As such, a consensus on the provision of nurse-led pre-discharge review label and interactive patient personal passport (Figure 1) was achieved via a group of cardiologists and HF specialist nurses to address identified practice gap from preceding PDSA cycles. Full adherence to GDMT and the inclusion of F/U pathway were observed following the provision of nurse-led review label (Figure 2).
Conclusion
This study demonstrates that educational interventions – departmental teaching and innovative mnemonics can be effective in improving the quality of HF DS. Structured nurse-led review label and interactive patient personal passport are feasible interventions, which can be implemented at minimal cost to sustain adherence to GDMT, F/U care coordination and individualised patient education.

Background
Malaria patients are at risk of cardiopulmonary complications, but diagnosis and management are difficult in resource limited environments. B-lines by lung ultrasonography (LUS) can identify pulmonary alterations, however, little is known about the usefulness in malaria.
Purpose
We aimed to investigate the occurrence of B-lines in acute malaria patients at baseline and at follow-up, and whether they are associated with shortness of breath and impaired left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF).
Methods
Adult patients with non-severe acute malaria were prospectively enrolled from June to December 2020 in community healthcare clinics in a remote area. Patients were age- and sex-matched to controls without a prior history of malaria. We examined patients prior to anti-malaria treatment and at follow-up. Malaria treatment was administered according to national guidelines. Patients were excluded if they were pregnant, had concomitant infections or recent chest trauma. Patients underwent LUS (8-zones), echocardiography and peripheral blood smear. Measurements were blinded to clinical variables and outcomes.
Results
We included a total of 99 patients (median age 40±15 years, 55% men). Patients suffered from Plasmodium vivax (n=75), P. falciparum (n=22), and a mix of the two (n=2) and median parasite density was 1,595 parasites/mL (interquartile range [IQR] 528–6,585/mL). Follow-up was completed in 71 patients and the median follow-up time was 31 days (IQR 27–40 days).
Patients with acute malaria had significantly more B-lines at baseline than matched controls (P-value<0.001) and fewer B-lines at follow-up (P-value<0.001) (Figure 1). In acute malaria patients, number of B-lines at baseline correlated significantly with shortness of breath (OR 1.20, [1.04 to 1.39], P-value=0.01) and with LVEF (adjusted for age and sex: +8% [+1% to +15%], P-value=0.016 per 1% decrease in LVEF). There was no correlation between number of B-lines and parasite density (+2% [−5% to +11%], P-value=0.53 per 1000 increase in parasite density).
Conclusion
B-lines detected by LUS are more frequent in patients with acute malaria than in age- and sex-matched controls and decrease in response to treatment. B-lines also correlate with shortness of breath and lower LVEF at baseline. Because LUS is a quick and accessible examination, it may potentially facilitate risk stratification and therapeutic decisions regarding cardiopulmonary complications in patients with acute malaria.

Background
Several studies have indicated that self-perception of health is related to cardiovascular disease. Despite cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in South America, the relationship between patient reported health and cardiovascular risk is sparsely explored, specifically in indigenous areas.
Purpose
We assessed if self-rated health is associated with cardiovascular risk factors in a remote area in South America.
Methods
We included participants by cluster-randomization of community health care clinics from June to December 2020. Sociodemographic variables and information on cardiovascular risk factors were collected by questionnaires and physical examination. All participants rated their present health status according to the validated EQ5D-VAS instrument, ranging from 0 (worst) to 100 (best).
Results
A total of 492 participants (mean age 41±15 years; 38% men) were included. The mean value of self-rated health was 80 (range 0 to 100) and the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors were: Hypertension (19%), hypercholesterolemia (15%), smoking (37%), low intake of vegetables (defined as <3 times per week; 54%), no sport activity (62%), diabetes (6%) and obesity (24%). In logistic regression models adjusted for sex, age and socioeconomic status, higher self-rated health was significantly associated with lower risk of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, obesity and greater vegetable intake (P<0.05; Figure 1). No association was found with sport activity or diabetes. The total number of cardiovascular risk factors increased with lower self-rated health (beta = 0.100 [0.04 to 0.15], P<0.001 per 10 decrease in self-reported health).
Conclusion
Self-rated health was significantly associated with a greater burden of cardiovascular risk factors and may influence ideal cardiovascular health. Future studies should assess if patient reported health status constitutes an independent risk factor for heart disease in this specific population, and studies elucidating gaps on self-perception of cardiovascular health are encouraged.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) has been increasing in the last five decades, but there is no large-scale data regarding these tumours in Portugal. We conducted a cross-sectional, multicentric study in main Portuguese centers to evaluate the clinical, pathological, and therapeutic profile of GEP-NENs. METHODS From November, 2012, to July, 2014, data from 293 patients diagnosed with GEP-NENs from 15 centers in Portugal was collected and registered in an online electronic platform. RESULTS Median age at diagnosis was 56.5 (range: 15-87) years with a preponderance of females (54.6%). The most frequent primary sites were the pancreas (31.1%), jejunum-ileum (24.2%), stomach (13.7%), and rectum (8.5%). Data regarding hormonal status was not available in most patients (82.3%). Stratified by the tumour grade (WHO 2010 classification), we observed 64.0% of NET G1, 24.7% of NET G2, and 11.3% of NEC. Poorly differentiated tumours occurred mainly in older patients (p = 0.017), were larger (p < 0.001), and presented more vascular (p = 0.004) and lymphatic (p = 0.001) invasion. At the time of diagnosis, 44.4% of GEP-NENs presented metastatic disease. Surgery (79.6%) and somatostatin analogues (30.7%) were the most frequently used therapies of GEP-NENs with reported grading. CONCLUSION In general, Portuguese patients with GEP-NENs presented similar characteristics to other populations described in the literature. This cross-sectional study represents the first step to establish a national database of GEP-NENs that may aid in understanding the clinical and epidemiological features of these tumours in Portugal.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Seizures are an important cause of morbidity in patients with low grade gliomas with approximately 40% of cases drug resistant. The pathogenesis is quite complex and poorly understood. The treatment aims vary between almost purely epilepsy considerations and those that are primarily oncologic. AIM To determine whether patients who present with seizures and are found to have a low grade glioma have better outcomes when managed through a specialized epilepsy unit compared to the general neurosurgical service. METHODS A review of the prospectively collected database was performed over a 10 year period to identify 48 adult patients who present with a seizure and were subsequently found to have a low grade glioma. These patients were analysed with respect to management through the specialized epilepsy service or the general neurosurgical service. The primary outcome was Engel classification between the two groups. Secondary outcomes included recurrence, postoperative deficits, delay to surgery, histology, grade and extent of resection. OUTCOMES The patients managed through the epilepsy service had significantly higher rate of favourable Engel outcomes (I and II) compared to the general neurosurgery service (OR: 13.2, 95% CI: 1.239-140.679; P = 0.033). The epilepsy surgery group patients had a significantly higher delay to surgery (P < 0.001). The patients in the epilepsy service had a significantly higher resection ratio compared to the general neurosurgery service (73% vs 127%, P = 0.014). Rates of recurrence were not different between the two groups. CONCLUSION Patients with tumour related epilepsy who undergo an intensive presurgical evaluation may obtain better seizure related outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of the study was to present the findings of an audit tool aimed at assessing contact tracing activities during an Ebola outbreak. Methods The tool was based on Ebola guidelines and observations in the field. It was composed of 38 indicators covering contact tracing preparatives, resources, procedures and results. Results All contact tracing teams were assessed in Boké and Conakry prefectures (24 supervisors, 22 community workers, 442 contacts) between 1 July and 10 August 2015. Contact lists had less than a 40% accomplishment rate. 7% of the contacts were not seen by community workers or supervisors. 'No touch policy' was fully respected. Conclusion Audit checklist helped to systematically identify critical issues related to contact tracing.

Abstract
Extracts of leaves, fruits and seeds of olive tree cultivars of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal) were analysed by reverse phase HPLC with diode array detection and mass spectrometry (MS). This methodology allowed the identification of some common phenolic compounds, namely, verbascoside, rutin, luteolin-7-glucoside, oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol. Moreover the hyphenation of HPLC with MS enabled the identification of nüzhenide in olive seeds. An oleuropein glucoside was also detected in olive tree leaves. The total phenolic content was determined with the Folin Denis reagent and the total antioxidant activity with the ABTS method. There is a correlation between total antioxidant activity and total phenolic content with the exception of the seed extracts analysed. The apparent high antioxidant activity of seed extracts may be due to nüzhenide, a secoiridoid that is the major phenolic component of olive seeds. These results suggest a possible application of olive seeds as sources of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are capable of rapid activation and production of cytokines upon recognition of antigenic lipids presented by CD1d molecules. They have been shown to play a significant role in many viral infections and were observed to be highly activated in patients with acute dengue infection. In order to characterize further their role in dengue infection, we investigated the proportion of iNKT cells and their phenotype in adult patients with acute dengue infection. The functionality of iNKT cells in patients was investigated by both interferon (IFN)-γ and interleukin (IL)-4 ex-vivo enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays following stimulation with alpha-galactosyl-ceramide (αGalCer). We found that circulating iNKT cell proportions were significantly higher (P = 0·03) in patients with acute dengue when compared to healthy individuals and were predominantly of the CD4(+) subset. iNKT cells of patients with acute dengue had reduced proportions expressing CD8α and CD161 when compared to healthy individuals. The iNKT cells of patients were highly activated and iNKT activation correlated significantly with dengue virus-specific immunoglobulin (Ig)G antibody levels. iNKT cells expressing Bcl-6 (P = 0·0003) and both Bcl-6 and inducible T cell co-stimulator (ICOS) (P = 0·006) were increased significantly in patients when compared to healthy individuals. Therefore, our data suggest that in acute dengue infection there is an expansion of highly activated CD4(+) iNKT cells, with reduced expression of CD161 markers.

Abstract
Both dengue NS1 antigen and serum interleukin (IL)-10 levels have been shown to associate with severe clinical disease in acute dengue infection, and IL-10 has also been shown to suppress dengue-specific T cell responses. Therefore, we proceeded to investigate the mechanisms by which dengue NS1 contributes to disease pathogenesis and if it is associated with altered IL-10 production. Serum IL-10 and dengue NS1 antigen levels were assessed serially in 36 adult Sri Lankan individuals with acute dengue infection. We found that the serum IL-10 levels correlated positively with dengue NS1 antigen levels (Spearman's r = 0·47, P < 0·0001), and NS1 also correlated with annexin V expression by T cells in acute dengue (Spearman's r = 0·63, P = 0·001). However, NS1 levels did not associate with the functionality of T cell responses or with expression of co-stimulatory molecules. Therefore, we further assessed the effect of dengue NS1 on monocytes and T cells by co-culturing primary monocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), with varying concentrations of NS1 for up to 96 h. Monocytes co-cultured with NS1 produced high levels of IL-10, with the highest levels seen at 24 h, and then declined gradually. Therefore, our data show that dengue NS1 appears to contribute to pathogenesis of dengue infection by inducing IL-10 production by monocytes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Point mutations of the PRKAR1A gene are a genetic cause of Carney complex (CNC) and primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD), but in 30% of the patients no mutation is detected. OBJECTIVE Set up a routine-based technique for systematic detection of large deletions or duplications of this gene and functionally characterize these mutations. METHODS Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) of the 12 exons of the PRKAR1A gene was validated and used to detect large rearrangements in 13 typical CNC and 39 confirmed or putative PPNAD without any mutations of the gene. An in-frame deletion was characterized by western blot and bioluminescence resonant energy transfer technique for its interaction with the catalytic subunit. RESULTS MLPA allowed identification of exons 3-6 deletion in three patients of a family with typical CNC. The truncated protein is expressed, but rapidly degraded, and does not interact with the protein kinase A catalytic subunit. CONCLUSIONS MLPA is a powerful technique that may be used following the lack of mutations detected by direct sequencing in patients with bona fide CNC or PPNAD. We report here one such new deletion, as an example. However, these gene defects are not a frequent cause of CNC or PPNAD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tendon lesions are still a serious clinical problem. The leaves of the Bignoniaceae Arrabidaea chica (Humb. & Bonpl.) B. Verlot. (syn. Bignonia chica (Bonpl.)) have been used in traditional medicine and described in the literature for its healing properties. However, no study has shown the effects of A. chica during tendon healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the healing properties of the A. chica leaves extract on tendons after partial transection. METHODS A partial transection in the tension region of the Achilles tendon of rats was performed with subsequent posterior topical application of A. chica extract (2.13g/mL in 0.85% saline solution) at the site of the injury. The animals (n=154) were separated into 7 groups: N - rats with tendons without transection; S7, S14 and S21 - rats with tendons treated with topical applications of saline for 7 days and sacrificed on the 7th, 14th and 21st days after surgery, respectively; A7, A14 and A21 - rats with tendons treated with topical applications of the plant extract. The transected regions of the tendons were analyzed through biochemical, morphological and functional analyses. To evaluate the type and concentration of collagen, Western blotting for collagen types I and III was performed, and the hydroxyproline concentration was determined. The participation of metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 during tendon remodelling was investigated through zymography. Gait recovery was analyzed using the catwalk system. The organization of the extracellular matrix and morphometry were detected in sections stained with haematoxylin-eosin. RESULTS The application of A. chica extract in the region of tendon injury led to an increase in the amount of hydroxyproline (mg/g tissue) on the 7th (91.5±18.9) and 21st (95.8±11.9) days after the tendon lesion relative to the control groups treated with saline (S7: 75.2±7.2; and S21: 71.9±7.9). There were decreases in collagen types I and III (as determined by densitometry) in the groups treated with the plant extract 7 days after injury (type I: 103.9±15.9; type III: 206.3±8.1) compared to the saline-treated groups (type I: 165.2±31.1; type III: 338.6±48.8). The plant extract stimulated the synthesis of MMP-2 on the 21st day after the lesion and decreased the amount of latent and active isoforms of MMP-9 on the 14th day. Analysis by the catwalk system (max contact intensity) showed that the A. chica extract improved the gait of rats on the 7th day of the healing process when compared to the saline group. CONCLUSIONS The use of A. chica extract during the healing process of the tendon leads to an increase in collagen content and improved gait recovery. Further studies will be performed to analyze the effect of this plant extract on the organization of the collagen bundles of tendons after lesions and to study its probable anti-inflammatory effect.

Abstract
It has been reported that women with prolactinoma were exposed, early in life, to an environment characterized by an absent or violent father. The present study was designed to evaluate whether paternal absence or violent paternal behavior were more prevalent in patients with pituitary adenomas (prolactinoma, acromegaly, non-secreting adenoma and Cushing's disease) compared to a control population. We conducted an observational case-control multicenter study. We interviewed 395 patients with prolactinoma (296 females and 99 males), 130 with acromegaly (87 females and 43 males), 237 with non-secreting adenoma (144 females and 93 males) and 68 with Cushing's disease (61 females and 7 males) and 365 patients from the same clinics with nodular thyroid disease or lymphocytic thyroiditis with euthyroidism as controls. Violent or absent fathers were significantly more prevalent in patients with prolactinoma or acromegaly than in controls (P = 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively) but not in patients with non-secreting adenoma or corticotrophinoma. Absent fathers in prolactinoma and acromegaly versus controls: P = 0.001 and P = 0.119. Violent fathers in prolactinoma and acromegaly versus controls: P = 0.069 and P = 0.001. The prevalence of absent or violent fathers was also significantly higher in prolactinoma and acromegaly when compared to non-secreting adenoma (P = 0.039 and P = 0.033, respectively). Paternal deprivation before adolescence may be a risk factor for prolactinoma and acromegaly but not for non-secreting pituitary adenomas or Cushing's disease.

Abstract
AIM To measure carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in obese, overweight and normal-weight Portuguese adolescents, to evaluate the association between body weight early signs of atherosclerosis. METHODS Cross-sectional study, enrolling 150 adolescents (50 normal weight, 50 overweight and 50 obese) with mean age of 12.9 years. All underwent clinical, analytical and carotid common artery ultrasonographic evaluation. RESULTS After adjusting for systolic blood pressure and plasma High-density lipoprotein, Low-density lipoprotein and Triglycerides levels, higher mean cIMT values were observed in both overweight and obese patients, when compared to normal-weight group. Moreover, adolescents with metabolic syndrome (MS) had greater cIMT [normal-weight: cIMT mean 0.418 mm (95% confidence intervals (95% CI) 0.399-0.437); overweight: 0.461 mm (95% CI: 0.444-0.477); obese: 0.472 mm (95% CI: 0.455-0.488); MS: 0.482 mm (95% CI: 0.444-0.520) p = 0.001]. When normal-weight and overweight adolescents were exclusively compared, differences in cIMT remained significant (p < 0.001). cIMT was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) (r = 0.439, p < 0.001), waist circumference (r = 0.301, p = 0.018) and diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.266, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS We have shown that cIMT is positively associated with BMI increase in adolescents, even in moderate overweight ranges, independent of age, gender, systolic blood pressure and plasma lipid concentrations.

Abstract
Skull-base osteomyelitis (SBO) occurs secondary to invasive bacterial and fungal infection. Distinguishing between fungal and bacterial aetiologies of SBO has significant therapeutic implications. An 18-year (1990-2007) retrospective review of patients with SBO presenting to Westmead Hospital was performed. Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and radiology data were collated. Twenty-one patients (median age 58 years) with SBO were identified: ten (48%) had bacterial and 11 (52%) had fungal SBO. Diabetes mellitus (57%) and chronic otitis externa (33%) were the most frequent co-morbidities; immunosuppression was present in five cases (24%). Cranial nerve deficits occurred in ten (48%) patients. The commonest pathogens were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (50% bacterial SBO) and a zygomycete (55% fungal SBO). Compared to bacterial SBO, fungal SBO was more frequently associated with underlying chronic sinusitis, sinonasal pain, facial/periorbital swelling and nasal stuffiness or discharge and the absence of purulent ear discharge (all p <0.05). Bacterial SBO was more frequently associated with deafness, ear pain or ear discharge (all p <0.05). Median time to presentation was longer in patients with bacterial SBO (26.3 weeks vs. 8.1 weeks, p 0.08). Overall 6-month survival was 88% (14/18 patients). All four deaths occurred in patients with fungal SBO. Immunosuppression was a risk factor for death (p <0.05). Early diagnostic sampling is recommended in patients at increased risk of fungal SBO to enable optimal antimicrobial and surgical management.

Abstract. The EU FP7 Project MEGAPOLI: "Megacities: Emissions, urban, regional and Global Atmospheric POLlution and climate effects, and Integrated tools for assessment and mitigation" (http://megapoli.info) brings together leading European research groups, state-of-the-art scientific tools and key players from non-European countries to investigate the interactions among megacities, air quality and climate. MEGAPOLI bridges the spatial and temporal scales that connect local emissions, air quality and weather with global atmospheric chemistry and climate. The suggested concept of multi-scale integrated modelling of megacity impact on air quality and climate and vice versa is discussed in the paper. It requires considering different spatial and temporal dimensions: time scales from seconds and hours (to understand the interaction mechanisms) up to years and decades (to consider the climate effects); spatial resolutions: with model down- and up-scaling from street- to global-scale; and two-way interactions between meteorological and chemical processes.

Abstract
Studies show that genetic polymorphisms in apolipoproteins, which are in charge of lipid transport, predispose to atherogenic dyslipidemia. This study aimed to investigate the impact of apolipoprotein E, A5, and B genotypes and dietary intake on lipid profile in a sample of elderly women in Brazil. Two hundred and fifty-two women (60 years or older) living in the outskirts of the Brazilian Federal District underwent clinical and laboratory assessments to characterize glycemic and lipidemic variables, and also to exclude confounding factors (smoking, drinking, hormone replacement, cognitive impairment, physical activity). Three-day food records were used to determine usual dietary intake, whereas genotypic evaluations were in accordance to established methodologies. Genotype frequencies were consistent with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Prior to adjustment, individuals carrying the epsilon2 allele showed higher serum levels of triglycerides (P<0.05) and VLDL (P<0.005) compared to epsilon4 carriers, whereas LDL levels were considerably elevated in epsilon4 compared to epsilon2 carriers. In the presence of high intake of total fat or a low ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid, epsilon4 carriers lost protection against hypertriglyceridemia. There was no association of the apolipoprotein A5 and B genotypes with lipidemic levels independently of the fat intake regimen. Results are suggestive of a dysbetalipoproteinemic-like phenotype in postmenopausal women, with remarkable gene-diet interaction.

Abstract
Nanostructured silicon (na-Si:H) thin films were fabricated using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) technique under high silane hydrogen dilution and a discharge frequency of 27 MHz, where the substrate was located in the dark region of the plasma, protected by a grounded metal grid. By not exposing the growth surface directly to the plasma we avoid the silicon growth surface to sustain a high ion bombardment leading to a less defective surface and highly compact films. The intrinsic films grown under these conditions were used to produce the channel region of thin film transistors (TFTs) with a bottom gate staggered configuration, integrating different dielectric layers. The devices produced exhibit a field effect mobility close to 1.84 cm2 V(-1) s(-1), threshold voltage around 2 V, on/off ratio above 10(7) and sub-threshold slope below 0.5 V/decade, depending on the dielectric used.

Abstract
This paper presents a degradation study of the pesticide atrazine using photo-assisted electrochemical methods at a dimensionally stable anode (DSA(®)) of nominal composition Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.7)O(2) in a prototype reactor. The effects of current density, electrolyte flow-rate, as well as the use of different atrazine concentrations are reported. The results indicate that the energy consumption is substantially reduced for the combined photochemical and electrochemical processes when compared to the isolated systems. It is observed that complete atrazine removal is achieved at low current densities when using the combined method, thus reducing the energy required to operate the electrochemical system. The results also include the investigation of the phytotoxicity of the treated solutions.

Abstract
Minimum post-mortem intervals can be estimated based on analyses of the pattern of insect succession on a carcass. In order to successfully apply this approach, insect development rates must be considered with regard to local regional climatic conditions. This study is the first to analyse insect succession on carcasses decomposing in a sugarcane crop in Brazil. In all seasons, Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) were frequent visitors during the fresh and bloated stages of decomposition, whereas Dermestes maculatus (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Dermistdae), Necrobia rufipes (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and Oxelytrum sp. (Coleoptera: Silphidae) were characteristic at the most advanced decomposition stages. The fact that climatic variations influence the occurrence of insect species and vegetation in the tropics may help to solve crimes through sampling of the local insect fauna, as may the fact that only certain groups of insects occur in specific regions of large countries like Brazil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years there has been an increased interest in the behavioural correlates of poor peer relations in childhood. It is now apparent that early poor peer relations are associated with negative future outcomes. The present study investigated whether behaviours that reflect impulsivity or require response inhibition are uniquely linked to children's peer relations. METHODS Five- and 6-year-old children's impulsivity was assessed using the teacher-rated impulsivity scale (TRIS), while the stop signal task and a modified version of Manly et al.'s opposite worlds task were employed as measures of response inhibition. In addition, peer relations measures were obtained for each child by asking their peers to indicate on a peer rating scale how much they would like to play with them. RESULTS It was found that children's scores on the TRIS correlated significantly with peer relations measures (sociometric preference, peer acceptance and peer rejection) after controlling for gender, age and intelligence. Children rated by their teachers to be more impulsive had poorer peer relations. While there was a significant correlation between TRIS and stop-signal task performance, little relationship was found between either of the response inhibition measures and children's peer relations. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that impulsivity is associated with children's poor relations with their peers and that this association is dependent upon the measure of impulsivity used. Whereas the more subjective teacher-ratings of impulsiveness did correlate with peer relations, the more objective behavioural measures of response inhibition, (thought to directly measure impulsivity), did not. The difference between these measures needs further investigation. While the data are correlational and causal direction can only be speculated, a practical implication of the finding of an association between impulsivity and peer acceptance is that adoption of strategies to minimize impulsive behaviour may improve the poor peer relations of children.
