A critical interpretive synthesis of the intersection of domestic violence with parental issues of mental health and substance misuse

A critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) methodology was used with the aim of informing practice with children and families when domestic and family violence (DFV) and parental issues relating to alcohol and other drugs (AOD) and mental health (MH) are also present. A CIS is grounded in the literature, but includes questioning of the literature in order to problematise gaps, contradictions and constructions of issues. A review of the literature from 2010 to 2018 was conducted with the structured search strategy identifying 40 relevant research articles. Synthesis and critique of these articles revealed three mutually informative themes through which to understand the literature and how it can inform practice. They were as follows: differences in theoretical approaches and client focus; complexity of system's collaboration; and practices converging on mothers. Taken together, these themes facilitated the development of the synthesising construct: strengthening intersection between DFV, AOD and MH sectors. Attention to practice at multiple levels that responds to the dynamics of gender and the differing impacts of violence was often lacking, particularly in the context of heightened child protection concerns where collaboration between sectors is needed. Both promising and problematic practices relating to gender dynamics and accountability converged on mothers. While there were exceptions, generally, there was an absence of engagement with, and recognition of, the impacts of fathers' patterns of using violence and control on adult and child survivors. Promising practice related to the strengthening of the mother-child relationship and attention to MH and its intersection with domestic violence. Strengthening the intersections between DFV, AOD and MH practices with attention to keeping the perpetrator of violence in view is critical to overcoming the poor practice that can occur when sectors are siloed from each other.

Inclusive domestic violence standards: strategies to improve interventions for women with disabilities?

Women with disabilities experience violence at greater rates than other women, yet their access to domestic violence services is more limited. This limitation is mirrored in domestic violence sector standards, which often fail to include the specific issues for women with disabilities. This article has a dual focus: to outline a set of internationally transferrable standards for inclusive practice with women with disabilities affected by domestic violence; and report on the results of a documentary analysis of domestic violence service standards, codes of practice, and practice guidelines. It draws on the Building the Evidence (BtE) research and advocacy project in Victoria, Australia in which a matrix tool was developed to identify minimum standards to support the inclusion of women with disabilities in existing domestic violence sector standards. This tool is designed to interrogate domestic violence sector standards for their attention to women with disabilities.

Development of a continuous IL-7-dependent murine pre-B cell line PB-1 suitable for the biological characterisation and assay of human IL-7

Human interleukin-7 (IL-7) is a cytokine that appears to be critical for early T- and B-cell development and although IL-7 is currently under investigation as a therapeutic agent in a variety of hematolymphopoietic disorders, there have been few instances of the detection or investigation of this cytokine using a biological assay. This has been due, in the main, to the lack of a widely available, stable, easy to maintain and use, IL-7 responsive cell line. We have developed a pre-B-cell line, PB-1, from murine bone marrow, that is dependent on IL-7 for growth and has been maintained continually for up to 1 year without loss of responsiveness. The cells survive freezing and reviving, having been stored for periods of up to 4 years. The IL-7 bioassay is reproducible and sensitive, able to reliably detect 50 pg/ml IL-7. The assay is completely unresponsive to any other stimulatory cytokines tested and is not affected by a wide variety of inhibitory cytokines, with the exception of high levels of interferon alpha. The assay can be made completely specific for human IL-7 by including specific neutralizing antibodies for IL-7 and has been shown to be suitable for the estimation of IL-7 in both plasma and serum samples.

Diet and drug consumption in a group of elderly residing in rural Newfoundland

Dietary intakes and drug consumption were recorded for 24 seniors in a Newfoundland outport. Food frequency questionnaires suggested that the food groups consumed least adequately by the seniors were grain products and meat and alternatives: 71% did not consume the recommended daily minimum intake of grain products and 66.7% did not meet the minimum intake recommended for meat and alternatives. Inadequate consumption of milk products and vegetables and fruit was reported by 33.3% and 29.2% of the respondents respectively. All respondents used at least one medication on a regular basis. When the regular usage of both prescription and nonprescription drugs was considered, drug consumption ranged from one to eight. Antihypertensives and antianginals had the highest reported usage. This study suggests that many seniors simultaneously experience two factors with potentially negative effects on their nutritional status--high drug usage and poor dietary intake.
