Airflow and teleconnection patterns driving the spatial and temporal variability of high 7Be air concentrations in Europe

The long-term monitoring of the cosmogenic ⁷Be activity concentrations has been used to better understand the influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation dynamics in the troposphere. With an aim, this study analyzes weekly ⁷Be data from 15 sampling stations in Europe over 2005-2014. We first define peak (or extremely high) events in each station as those activity concentrations above the 90th percentile, and then investigate their temporal and spatial variability. These events are most frequent in the spring and summer seasons, with a notable latitudinal variability in their number. Next, we use back-trajectory cluster analysis to identify the main advection pathways associated with these high concentrations. To achieve this, persistent periods, i.e., sampling periods over which at least 60% of the calculated backward trajectories arriving at a given site correspond to the same airflow pattern, are taken as reference. This method reveals large differences in the association between the airflow patterns observed at different stations in connection with the ⁷Be peaks. A comparison between stations shows no clear spatial pattern, which suggests a further influence of mesoscale/local physical processes on the surface ⁷Be activity concentrations. Finally, the main airflow pattern at each sampling site and the associated ⁷Be peaks, are related to the main teleconnection patterns of large scale and regional climate variability in Europe: North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, East Atlantic, East Atlantic/Western Russia, Scandinavian pattern and Western Mediterranean Oscillation. The results point out the connection between the negative phases of NAO and We-MO, and the positive phase of EA with the spatial and temporal variability and occurrence of the ⁷Be peak activity concentrations. These results show a latitudinal division between northern and southern sites, with similar influence of teleconnection patterns, while those located in the central part of Europe present larger variability in the impact of teleconnection patterns.

Dispersion and ground deposition of radioactive material according to airflow patterns for enhancing the preparedness to N/R emergencies

The intent of minimizing the impact of the large amount of radioactive material potentially released into the atmosphere in a nuclear event implies preparedness activities. In the early phase and in absence of field observations, countermeasures would largely rely on a previous characterization of the transport and dispersion of radioactive particles and the potential levels of radioactive contamination. This study presents a methodology to estimate the atmospheric transport, dispersion and ground deposition patterns of radioactive particles. The methodology starts identifying the main airflow directions by means of the air mass trajectories calculated by the HYSPLIT model, and, secondly, the dispersion and the ground deposition characteristics associated with each airflow pattern by running the RIMPUFF atmospheric dispersion model. From the basis of these results, different products can be obtained, such as the most probable transport direction, spatial probability distribution of deposition and the geographical probability distribution of deposition above certain predefined threshold. The method is trained on the HYSPLIT trajectories and RIMPUFF simulations during five consecutive years (2012-2016) at the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant, in Spain. 3644 forward air mass trajectories were calculated (at 00 and 12 UTC, and with duration of 36 h). Eight airflow patterns were identified, and within each pattern, the persistent days, i.e. those days in which trajectories at 00 and 12 UTC grouped into the same airflow pattern, were extracted to simulate the atmospheric dispersion and ground deposition following a hypothetical ISLOCA accident sequence of 35 h. In total, 833 simulations were carried out, in which ground contamination was estimated at cell level on a non-homogeneous geographical grid spacing up to 800 km from Almaraz. The corresponding outcomes show a large variability in the area covered and in deposition values between airflow patterns, which provide comprehensive and oriented information and resources to decision makers to emergency management.

Evidences of different meteorological patterns governing 7Be and 210Pb surface levels in the southern Iberian Peninsula

⁷Be, ²¹⁰Pb and PM₁₀ levels in surface air have been simultaneously measured at two sampling sites in the southern Iberian Peninsula for a period of two years. Each site covers one different meteorological area of the Guadalquivir valley, from the mouth (Huelva) to the middle point (Cordoba). The objective of the present study is to analyse the spatial variability of both natural radionuclides, and to identify and characterise the meteorological patterns associated with similar and different surface concentration levels in this complex region. Concentrations are similar in both sampling sites. ⁷Be level is in the 0.6-15.5 mBq m^-3 range in Huelva and 1.2-13.3 mBq m^-3 in Córdoba, ²¹⁰Pb activity concentrations are between 0.04 and 2.30 mBq m^-3 in Huelva, and between 0.03 and 1.2 mBq m^-3 in Cordoba, and PM₁₀ concentrations are found to be in the 5.1-81.3 μg m^-3 range in Huelva, and 8.2-76.3 μg m^-3 in Cordoba, respectively. A linear regression analysis indicates more regional variability for ²¹⁰Pb than for ⁷Be between simultaneous measurements. Principal components analysis (PCA) is applied to the datasets and the results reveal that aerosol behaviour is mainly represented by two components, which explain 82% of the total variance. The analysis of surface measurements and meteorological parameters revealed that component F1 groups sampling periods in which the influence of similar meteorological conditions over the region lead to similar ⁷Be, ²¹⁰Pb and PM₁₀ concentration levels in both sampling sites. On the other hand, component F2 detaches the ⁷Be, ²¹⁰Pb and PM₁₀ concentration levels between monitoring sites, and the meteorological analysis shows how surface concentrations within this component are associated with the development of different mesoscale circulations in each part of the valley. The identification of sampling periods characterised by differences in surface concentrations and wind patterns between stations suggests that the valley could not be considered as one single unit for certain meteorological scenarios. These results evidence how the understanding of wind characteristics within a complex terrain provide some essential knowledge in the regionalization and/or optimization of monitoring networks.

Factors affecting the 7Be surface concentration and its extremely high occurrences over the Scandinavian Peninsula during autumn and winter

Relationships between the beryllium-7 activity concentrations in surface air and meteorological parameters (temperature, atmospheric pressure, and precipitation), teleconnection indices (Arctic Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, and Scandinavian pattern) and number of sunspots are investigated using two multivariate statistical techniques: hierarchical cluster and factor analysis. The beryllium-7 surface measurements over 1995-2011, at four sampling sites located in the Scandinavian Peninsula, are obtained from the Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring Database. In all sites, the statistical analyses show that the beryllium-7 concentrations are strongly linked to temperature. Although the beryllium-7 surface concentration exhibits the well-characterised spring/summer maximum, our study shows that extremely high beryllium-7 concentrations, defined as the values exceeding the 90^th percentile in the data records for each site, also occur over the October-March period. Two types of autumn/winter extremes are distinguished: type-1 when the number of extremes in a given month is less than three, and type-2 when at least three extremes occur in a month. Factor analysis performed for these autumn/winter events shows a weaker effect of temperature and a stronger impact of the transport and production signal on the beryllium-7 concentrations. Further, the majority of the type-2 extremes are associated with a very high monthly Scandinavian teleconnection index. The type-2 extremes that occurred in January, February and March are also linked to sudden stratospheric warmings of the Arctic vortex. Our results indicate that the Scandinavian teleconnection index might be a good indicator of the meteorological conditions facilitating extremely high beryllium-7 surface concentrations over Scandinavia during autumn and winter.

Wind dynamics' influence on south Spain airborne olive-pollen during African intrusions

Given its proximity to northern Africa, southern Spain is regularly affected by high-altitude African intrusions. This determines a well-defined wind dynamics at surface levels. Although this weather event-mainly recorded in spring and summer-coincides with the flowering season of many wind pollinated species, its potential influence on long term airborne pollen transport has been not investigated in detail. We analyse their influence on olive pollen transport at surface level in south Spain. Daily and bi-hourly olive pollen data from 2010 to 2015, recorded at two sites 150km apart, Málaga (coast) and Córdoba (inland), were analysed together with 1) air masses at 300m above ground level (m.a.g.l.), 2) surface wind direction and 3) surface wind speed over the same period. Air masses at 3000m.a.g.l. were used to identify the periods under the influence of African intrusions. The combined analysis has enabled the identification of different pollen patterns and source contributions. In Málaga, hourly pollen peaks were recorded during the early morning coinciding with the arrival of north-westerly winds (developing sea-land breezes), with a minimal impact of local pollen sources; in Córdoba, by contrast, pollen concentrations reflected the joint contribution of local and long term sources, being the maximum concentrations associated with the arrival of southerly air masses in the afternoon. These results help to understand the potential distant sources and back-trajectories of olive pollen detected. In our case pollen from sources located at the west-northwest areas in the case of Malaga, and from the south in Cordoba. These results reinforce the idea that combined studies between synoptic meteorological and aerobiological data together with different atmospheric height air masses data, offer us a better explanation and understanding of the behaviour and the potential sources of recorded airborne data in a given place.

7Be behaviour and meteorological conditions associated with 7Be peak events in Spain

This work regards a comprehensive analysis of the overall distribution of ⁷Be activity concentrations in Spain and the synoptic meteorological conditions associated with the highest ⁷Be peaks (>8 mBq/m³). The use of four sampling stations (Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, and Sevilla) included in REMdb, with different latitudinal location, as well as the relatively long time period used in this study (2001-2010), allowed to improve the understanding of ⁷Be spatio-temporal distribution in Spain. The comparison of the ⁷Be activity concentrations mean values indicated a north-south gradient (from 3.1 ± 1.1 mBq/m³ in Bilbao to 4.0 ± 1.8 mBq/m³ in Sevilla), even though not statistically significant (as indicated by the t-test). However, the analysis of frequency distributions and temporal evolutions of ⁷Be activity concentrations have suggested the presence of two main areas, namely northern (Bilbao and Barcelona) and southern (Sevilla) Spain. The identification and analysis of periods associated with the highest values of ⁷Be have allowed studying the different synoptic patterns associated with stratospheric-tropospheric transport (STT). In particular, three episodes (one in the north and two in the south) potentially associated with vigorous STT have been identified and analysed in detail. The results displayed that the omega block configuration, extending either over western Russia and Scandinavia or into the Atlantic Ocean, forced the prevailing jet stream to the northeast and south of Spain respectively with subsequent subsidence. In summer, this blocking configuration at high latitudes was combined with the presence of the Azores high pressure system to the west of Spain, affecting the ⁷Be activity concentration recorded in the south.

Identification of airborne radioactive spatial patterns in Europe - Feasibility study using Beryllium-7

The present study proposes a methodology to identify spatial patterns in airborne radioactive particles in Europe. The methodology is based on transforming the activity concentrations in the set of stations for each month (monthly index), due to the tightly spaced sampling intervals (daily to monthly), in combination with hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering approaches, due to the lack of a priori knowledge of the number of clusters to be created. Three different hierarchical cluster methodologies are explored to set the optimal number of clusters necessary to initialize the non-hierarchical one (k-means). To evaluate this methodology, cosmogenic beryllium-7 ((7)Be) data, collected between 2007 and 2010 at 19 sampling stations in European Union (EU) countries and stored in the Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring (REM) database, are used. This methodology yields a solution with three distinguishable clusters (south, central and north), each with a different evolution of the (7)Be monthly index. Clear differences between monthly indices are shown in both intensity and time trends, following a latitudinal distribution of the sampling stations. This cluster result is evaluated performing ANOVA analysis, considering the original (7)Be activity concentrations grouped in each cluster. The statistical results (among clusters and sampling stations within clusters) confirm the spatial distribution of (7)Be in Europe, and, hence, reinforce the use of this methodology. Finally, the impact of tropopause height on this grouping is successfully tested, suggesting its influence on the spatial distribution of (7)Be in Europe. For airborne radioactive particles the analysis gave valuable results that improve knowledge of these atmospheric compounds in Europe. Hence, this work addresses a methodology to a grouping of airborne sampling stations, 1) allowing a better understanding of the distribution of (7)Be activity concentrations in the EU, and 2) serving as a basis for further investigation of the heterogeneity of airborne radioactivity concentrations in Europe.

Cluster analysis of intradiurnal holm oak pollen cycles at peri-urban and rural sampling sites in southwestern Spain

The impact of regional and local weather and of local topography on intradiurnal variations in airborne pollen levels was assessed by analysing bi-hourly holm oak (Quercus ilex subsp. ballota (Desf.) Samp.) pollen counts at two sampling stations located 40 km apart, in southwestern Spain (Cordoba city and El Cabril nature reserve) over the period 2010-2011. Pollen grains were captured using Hirst-type volumetric spore traps. Analysis of regional weather conditions was based on the computation of backward trajectories using the HYSPLIT model. Sampling days were selected on the basis of phenological data; rainy days were eliminated, as were days lying outside a given range of percentiles (P95-P5). Analysis of cycles for the study period, as a whole, revealed differences between sampling sites, with peak bi-hourly pollen counts at night in Cordoba and at midday in El Cabril. Differences were also noted in the influence of surface weather conditions (temperature, relative humidity and wind). Cluster analysis of diurnal holm oak pollen cycles revealed the existence of five clusters at each sampling site. Analysis of backward trajectories highlighted specific regional air-flow patterns associated with each site. Findings indicated the contribution of both nearby and distant pollen sources to diurnal cycles. The combined use of cluster analysis and meteorological analysis proved highly suitable for charting the impact of local weather conditions on airborne pollen-count patterns. This method, and the specific tools used here, could be used not only to study diurnal variations in counts for other pollen types and in other biogeographical settings, but also in a number of other research fields involving airborne particle transport modelling, e.g. radionuclide transport in emergency preparedness exercises.

The role of mesoscale meteorology in modulating the (222)Rn concentrations in Huelva (Spain)--impact of phosphogypsum piles

The combined analysis of (222)Rn activity concentrations and mesoscale meteorological conditions at Huelva city (Spain) was addressed in this study to understand the potential impact of phosphogypsum piles on the (222)Rn activity concentrations registered at this area. Hourly mean data from April 2012 to February 2013 registered at two sampling sites (Huelva city and in the background station of El Arenosillo, located 27 km to the south-east) have been used in the study. The results of the present study showed a large difference in mean radon concentrations between the two stations during the sampling period, 6.3 ± 0.4 Bq m(-3) at Huelva and 3.0 ± 0.2 Bq m(-3) at El Arenosillo. The analysis has demonstrated that hourly (222)Rn concentrations at Huelva city above 22 Bq m(-3), with nocturnal peaks up to 50 Bq/m(3), mainly coincided with the occurrence of a pure sea-land breeze cycle. Mesoscale circulations in this region are mainly characterized by two patterns of sea-land breeze, pure and non-pure, with the phosphosypsum piles directly upstream (south) of the city during the afternoon on pure sea-breeze days. The difference between mean (222)Rn activity concentrations at Huelva city were 9.9 ± 1.5 Bq m(-3) for the pure pattern and 3.3 ± 0.5 Bq m(-3) for the non-pure pattern, while in the background station concentrations were 3.9 ± 0.4 Bq m(-3) and 2.8 ± 0.4 Bq m(-3) respectively. Considering these large differences, a detailed analysis of composites and case studies of representative sea-land breeze cycles of both types and their impact on (222)Rn activity concentration was performed. The results suggested that the presence of the phosphogypsum piles was necessary in order to justify the high (222)Rn activity concentrations observed at Huelva compared with the background station in the afternoons on pure sea breeze days (1.5-2.0 Bq m(-3)). On the other hand, large night time differences between the two sites on these days were likely to be associated with a combination of shallow density currents travelling down the Guadalquivir valley and, again, the presence of phosphogypsum piles. The results have demonstrated a significant impact of the phosphogypsum piles on (222)Rn activity concentrations in Huelva city during the occurrence of pure sea breeze days.

A climatology of ⁷Be in surface air in European Union

This study presents a European-wide analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of the cosmogenic isotope (7)Be in surface air. This is the first time that a long term database of 34 sampling sites that regularly provide data to the Radioactivity Environmental Monitoring (REM) network, managed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, is used. While temporal coverage varies between stations, some of them have delivered data more or less continuously from 1984 to 2011. The station locations were considerably heterogeneous, both in terms of latitude and altitude, a range which should ensure a high degree of representativeness of the results. The mean values of (7)Be activity concentration presented a spatial distribution value ranging from 2.0 to 5.4 mBq/m(3) over the European Union. The results of the ANOVA analysis of all (7)Be data available indicated that its temporal and spatial distributions were mainly explained by the location and characteristic of the sampling sites rather than its temporal distribution (yearly, seasonal and monthly). Higher (7)Be concentrations were registered at the middle, compared to high-latitude, regions. However, there was no correlation with altitude, since all stations are sited within the atmospheric boundary layer. In addition, the total and yearly analyses of the data indicated a dynamic range of (7)Be activity for each solar cycle and phase (maximum or minimum), different impact on stations having been observed according to their location. Finally, the results indicated a significant seasonal and monthly variation for (7)Be activity concentration across the European Union, with maximum concentrations occurring in the summer and minimum in the winter, although with differences in the values reached. The knowledge of the horizontal and vertical distribution of this natural radionuclide in the atmosphere is a key parameter for modelling studies of atmospheric processes, which are important phenomena to be taken into account in the case of a nuclear accident.

Analysis of the vertical radon structure at the Spanish "El Arenosillo" tower station

This paper presents an analysis of one year of hourly radon and meteorological measurements at 10 m and 100 m a.g.l. at El Arenosillo tall-tower station, in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula. Whole-year and seasonal composites of the diurnal radon cycle show the expected behaviour, with larger concentrations at 10 m than at 100 m during the night, due to poor vertical mixing, and similar concentrations at both heights during the daylight hours. Wind speed and wind direction analyses by sector show the prevailing contributions for each season. Sectors with air which has spent a longer period over the ocean and high wind speeds will lead to low concentrations at both levels, whereas inland sectors show a clear increase of the concentrations with similar overall averages for the two levels. The Sierra Morena, Guadalquivir and Bethics System sectors (continental pathways) are the sectors that show higher concentrations for mild to large wind speeds. The daily evolution of radon concentration differences at both heights has been grouped into four clusters by using a K-means algorithm method. The four clusters have been selected so that they sufficiently describe different characteristics in terms of stability. The temporal evolution of the mixing height (MH) and of the bulk diffusivity parameter (Kb) during the nocturnal period has been calculated by using the temporal variation of (222)Rn concentration at 10 m and the concentration gradient with height, respectively.

Improvement in the accuracy of back trajectories using WRF to identify pollen sources in southern Iberian Peninsula

Airborne pollen transport at micro-, meso-gamma and meso-beta scales must be studied by atmospheric models, having special relevance in complex terrain. In these cases, the accuracy of these models is mainly determined by the spatial resolution of the underlying meteorological dataset. This work examines how meteorological datasets determine the results obtained from atmospheric transport models used to describe pollen transport in the atmosphere. We investigate the effect of the spatial resolution when computing backward trajectories with the HYSPLIT model. We have used meteorological datasets from the WRF model with 27, 9 and 3 km resolutions and from the GDAS files with 1° resolution. This work allows characterizing atmospheric transport of Olea pollen in a region with complex flows. The results show that the complex terrain affects the trajectories and this effect varies with the different meteorological datasets. Overall, the change from GDAS to WRF-ARW inputs improves the analyses with the HYSPLIT model, thereby increasing the understanding the pollen episode. The results indicate that a spatial resolution of at least 9 km is needed to simulate atmospheric flows that are considerable affected by the relief of the landscape. The results suggest that the appropriate meteorological files should be considered when atmospheric models are used to characterize the atmospheric transport of pollen on micro-, meso-gamma and meso-beta scales. Furthermore, at these scales, the results are believed to be generally applicable for related areas such as the description of atmospheric transport of radionuclides or in the definition of nuclear-radioactivity emergency preparedness.

Spatial and temporal variation of surface ozone, NO and NO₂ at urban, suburban, rural and industrial sites in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula

Surface ozone is one of the most important photochemical pollutants in the low atmosphere, causing damage to human health, vegetation, materials and climate. The weather (high temperatures and high solar radiation), orography (presence of the Guadalquivir valley) and anthropogenic (the cities of Cádiz, Córdoba, Huelva and Seville and two important industrial complexes) characteristics of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula make this region ideal for the formation and accumulation of ozone. To increase the knowledge of ozone behaviour in this area, the monthly, daily and weekly variations of ozone and its precursors, nitrogen oxides (NO(x) = NO + NO2), were analysed over a 4-year period (2003 to 2006). Using the k-means cluster technique, 12 representative stations of five different areas with different ozone behaviour were selected from a total of 29 monitoring sites. This is the first time that the analysis of these atmospheric pollutants has been carried out for the whole area, allowing therefore a complete understanding of the dynamics and the relationships of these compounds in this region. The results showed an opposite behaviour among ozone and NO and NO2 concentrations in urban and suburban zones, marked by maximums of ozone (minimums NO(x)) in spring and summer and minimums (maximums) in autumn and winter. A seasonal behaviour, with lower amplitude, was also observed in rural and industrial areas for ozone concentrations, with the NO and NO2 concentrations remaining at low and similar values during the year in rural zones due to the absence of emission sources in their surroundings. The daily cycles of ozone in urban, suburban and industrial sites registered a maximum value in the early afternoon (14:00-17:00 UTC) while for NOx two peaks were observed, at 7:00-10:00 UTC and 20:00-22:00. In the case of rural stations, no hourly peak of ozone or NO(x) was registered. The weekend effect was studied by using a statistical contrast tests (Student's t). The results indicated that only areas influenced by important traffic emissions presented a weekend effect for NO and NO2, whereas an ozone weekend effect was not detected in any case.

Radioactive impact in South Korea from the damaged nuclear reactors in Fukushima: evidence of long and short range transport

Traces of long-lived fallout-derived radioisotopes ((134)Cs and (137)Cs) were found in wet and dry deposition samples collected from the west and east coasts of South Korea from March to May 2011 following the release of radionuclides from the damaged nuclear power plants in Fukushima, Japan. The analysis of air mass back trajectory and atmospheric pressure systems indicated that the Fukushima-derived radiocaesium had predominantly reached South Korea from the west by surface westerlies from 11 March to 5 April; however, after 6 April, air masses arrived from Japan directly due to a high pressure system that developed to the east of Japan. Spatial variation of deposition fluxes of radiocaesium in South Korea was partly attributed to the presence of local longitudinal orography.

Tracking the complete revolution of Surface Westerlies over Northern Hemisphere using radionuclides emitted from Fukushima

Massive amounts of anthropogenic radionuclides were released from the nuclear reactors located in Fukushima (northeastern Japan) between 12 and 16 March 2011 following the earthquake and tsunami. Ground level air radioactivity was monitored around the globe immediately after the Fukushima accident. This global effort provided a unique opportunity to trace the surface air mass movement at different sites in the Northern Hemisphere. Based on surface air radioactivity measurements around the globe and the air mass backward trajectory analysis of the Fukushima radioactive plume at various places in the Northern Hemisphere by employing the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model, we show for the first time, that the uninterrupted complete revolution of the mid-latitude Surface Westerlies took place in less than 21 days, with an average zonal velocity of>60 km/h. The position and circulation time scale of Surface Westerlies are of wide interest to a large number of global researchers including meteorologists, atmospheric researchers and global climate modellers.

Radioactive impact of Fukushima accident on the Iberian Peninsula: evolution and plume previous pathway

High activity concentrations of several man-made radionuclides (such as (131)I, (132)I, (132)Te, (134)Cs and (137)Cs) have been detected along the Iberian Peninsula from March 28th to April 7th 2011. The analysis of back-trajectories of air masses allowed us to demonstrate that the levels of manmade radionuclide activity concentrations in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula come from the accident produced in the nuclear power plant of Fukushima. The pathway followed by the radioactive plume from Fukushima into Huelva (southwest of the Iberian Peninsula) was deduced through back-trajectories analysis, and this fact was also verified by the activity concentrations measured of those radionuclides reported in places crossed by this radioactive cloud. In fact, activity concentrations reported by E.P.A., and by IAEA, in several places of Japan, Pacific Ocean and United States of America are according to the expected ones from the air mass trajectory arriving at Huelva province.
