Abstract
While mobbing, individuals utter distinctive calls and perform visual threatening displays. Like any other antipredatory strategies, it involves some costs (time, energy, injuries, and even death). Therefore, mobbing would be expected to vary depending on the perceived magnitude of the predation risk. Moreover, harassment behavior can also serve as a demonstration of social status and to teach juveniles to recognize predators and related behaviors. Therefore, mobbing could also persist even when predation risk is particularly low. To test our hypotheses, we used tawny owl playbacks and a taxidermy mount to elicit the mobbing response in azure-winged magpies throughout the daylight period. To classify mobbing intensity, we created five categories depending on the proximity to the owl model at which the mobbing was performed. The results revealed that mobbing behavior in azure-winged magpies was more intense where predation risk was higher: in the most suitable habitat for the tawny owl, the forest, although considerable levels of mobbing were found in the dehesa and the ecotone, which indicate that mobbing has different purposes. However, we did not find statistically significant differences in mobbing intensity depending on the time of the day. We could not show a daily adjustment of antipredator response, but magpies modulated mobbing depending on the perceived risk linked to the habitat.

Abstract
The analysis of carbon and nitrogen elemental (C, N) and isotopic compositions (δ13C, δ15N) in faeces are considered reliable methodologies for the study of diet in wildlife. Here, we tested the suitability of these techniques to detect variations in the amount of food intake. We captured wild wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) with Sherman live traps where bait access was initially free, and later it was experimentally limited inside by four different devices to cause intended variations in the amount ingested. The total C and N (%) and stable δ13C and δ15N isotopic values were determined for the bait and in mice faecal samples. Faecal values were lower than bait ones except for N, likely due to animal matter ingested before capture. No significant differences in total C, N and δ13C were found due to individual traits. However, breeding males showed higher δ15N values than breeding females, probably due to differences in energy and protein demands between both sexes during the breeding season. Only δ13C detected food intake variations (≥2 g). Despite further research being needed, these results initially support the potential of δ13C to provide information on the amount ingested, thus being useful to complement trophic ecology studies.

Abstract
The mechanism governing the transition of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) toward differentiated cells is only partially understood. To explore this transition, the activity and expression of the ubiquitous phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3Kα and PI3Kβ) were modulated in primed hESCs. The study reports a pathway that dismantles the restraint imposed by the EZH2 polycomb repressor on an essential stemness gene, NODAL, and on transcription factors required to trigger primitive streak formation. The primitive streak is the site where gastrulation begins to give rise to the three embryonic cell layers from which all human tissues derive. The pathway involves a PI3Kβ non-catalytic action that controls nuclear/active RAC1 levels, activation of JNK (Jun N-terminal kinase) and nuclear β-catenin accumulation. β-Catenin deposition at promoters triggers release of the EZH2 repressor, permitting stemness maintenance (through control of NODAL) and correct differentiation by allowing primitive streak master gene expression. PI3Kβ epigenetic control of EZH2/β-catenin might be modulated to direct stem cell differentiation. PI3Kβ directs epigenetic control of stemness and primitive streak (PS) essential genes PI3Kβ directs RAC1/JNK/β-catenin activation and induces EZH2 promoter displacement β-Catenin/EZH2 control NODAL, a gene essential for stemness and the master PS genes PI3Kβ/PI3K activities cooperate at stemness; PI3Kβ directs PS gene expression

Abstract
Although trichromatic color vision has been extensively studied as it grants significant advantages for Old World primates, it is unknown which selective pressures were behind trait's evolution. The leading hypothesis would be that colour vision arose as a foraging adaptation because it allowed individuals to spot food more efficiently. To test this, we exposed three chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), five gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and three mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) to colour cardboard plates to assess if colours related to diet were the most preferred. Experimental setting was divided in two phases. During the first one, animals were provided with colour cardboard plates of only one colour per data collection session. The order of colour presentation was randomly determined: white, black, yellow, green and red. In phase two, primates were simultaneously provided with cardboard plates of all colours. Behavioural interactions with plates were measured using a one-zero group focal sampling (10 s sampling intervals and 20 m observation periods). Results showed that when animals were exposed to only one colour at a time, they exhibited different colour preferences depending on the species considered. Chimpanzees preferred red and yellow, the colours linked to fruits, while gorillas selected red and white. Mandrills exhibited fewer differences between colours preference, being red the most selected. Furthermore, when all colours were simultaneously provided, individuals chose colours related to diet over black and white. Although there were clear individual differences, our results support that trichromatic color vision is an advantage in detecting and selecting red items. In the wild, it could be important in the detection of reddish fruits and leaves.

Abstract
Live trapping is an essential element of field ecological studies. However, the act of trapping provides two types of conditional benefits (food from the bait when hungry, and refuge from a predator when threatened) against one type of drawback (confinement). Our understanding of how animals assess the two benefits against the lone risk determines how we interpret classic field studies in chemical ecology and wildlife management. Here, we studied wood mice responses to these risks and rewards of field trapping by examining experience through recapture and faecal corticosterone metabolites (FCM) as a physiological response indicator. Wood mice were live-trapped in two different plots subjected to two distinct phases: phase 1, absence of predator cues, and phase 2, in which traps were treated with red fox faeces. During phase 1, the recapture percentage was lower indicating that mice avoided traps while FCM levels in recaptured mice were higher. On the contrary, during phase 2, despite the total number of captures was lower we found an increase in the recapture percentage and FCM levels did not increase in recaptured mice. Our results suggest that under increased risk perception traps could be likely considered as a suitable shelter and thus, for some individuals the benefits of traps may outweigh their risks. In addition, we discovered that the effects of combining two stressors do not result in the addition of the response originated by each factor separately.

Abstract
SummaryTo date very few studies that analyze the prevalence of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) in healthy subjects have been reported. No data based on a systematic analysis of normal subjects with positive ACA is available. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalance of ACA, its clinical significance and relationship to the lupus anticoagulant (LA) and other autoimmune parameters in an apparently healthy population. 552 normal blood donors from a blood bank were randomly selected. ACA positive donors who consented were monitored over a period of twelve months and tested every three months. ACA (IgG and IgM isotypes) were quantitated by enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA). The prevalance for IgG ACA in our donor population was estimated to be 6.5%, and 9.4% for IgM ACA, which is similar to the one previously reported for IgG and slightly higher for IgM. It is worth noting that in our study ACA positive donors exhibited a progressive negativization. Eight donors with IgG ACA and seven with IgM ACA remained positive for nine months. Five donors with IgG ACA and four with IgM ACA had family history of thromboembolic disease. One donor with IgG ACA and two with IgM ACA had had unexplained miscarriages in the past. We did not find any relationship between ACA and LA, nor between ACA positivity and the clinical and laboratory data studied. Pseudopositivity for lues was not found. No thrombotic event occurred in donors that were positive for ACA during the 12-month follow-up.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Chronic vascular diseases constitute a growing global health problem. OBJECTIVES To (a) determine marker positivity for renovascular damage in the total adult population of the Isle of Youth, Cuba; (b) describe marker association with common risk factors for renal and related chronic vascular conditions, and (c) identify best predictors of renovascular damage. METHODS Previous informed consent was obtained, the population studied was 55,646, and subjects were aged ≥20 years. Blood pressure, weight and height were measured and a questionnaire applied. Urine markers for renovascular damage (hematuria, proteinuria and microalbuminuria) were also determined. RESULTS Positive markers were detected in 21.3%: hematuria (12.6%), microalbuminuria (6.8%), proteinuria (0.9%), and proteinuria + hematuria (0.9%). Risk factors were highly prevalent: 15.1% were aged ≥60 years; 32.3% overweight, 13.9% obese, and 25.1% smokers. Prevalence of high blood pressure (30%), diabetes mellitus (5.4%) and cardiovascular disease (5%) was also high, while cerebrovascular disease registered 0.9%. Markers were more prevalent in older people and in those suffering from diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, overweight or obesity. Risk factor regression tree analysis identified hypertension as the best predictor of renovascular damage. CONCLUSIONS Adult population-wide screening revealed hidden morbidity and permitted better risk stratification. Results serve to inform community-based multidisciplinary and intersectoral disease prevention and management.

Abstract
Recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) can be used as an alternative therapy in patients with FVII deficiency. However, as the drug has a very short half-life, continuous infusion could be a meaningful administration modality. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with moderate FVII deficiency and human immunodeficiency virus infection who underwent a caesarean section delivery. She was treated with a continuous infusion of rFVIIa and did not suffer any bleeding complication. The continuous infusion of rFVIIa was a safe and effective therapeutic approach for our patient, maintaining her levels of FVII:C and avoiding bleeding during caesarean section and afterwards.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the ability of an alloantibody from a patient with severe von Willebrand disease (vWD) to interfere with the vWF domain for FVIII, to inhibit factor VIII (FVIII), and to compare it with a rabbit polyclonal antibody. The vWF domain for binding to FVIII was assayed by a method previously described but using recombinant FVIII (r-FVIII, Kogenate), which contains no vWF, instead of Hemofil M (HM). Rabbit or human antibodies towards FVIII (FVIII-Ab) were analyzed using microtiter wells with immobilized r-FVIII through a monoclonal anti-FVIII antibody and an ELISA method. IgG from plasma of a patient with hemophilia A and FVIII inhibitor was used as a positive control. Normal human and rabbit IgGs were included as negative controls. Human vWD alloantibody IgG and the rabbit anti-vWF antibody IgG reacted with immobilized normal vWF, inhibiting its binding to r-FVIII in a dose-dependent manner, which suggests that it is specific. Normal human IgG fraction, as well as nonspecific rabbit IgG, did not interfere with this binding at all. The monoclonal antibody used in this assay to immobilize vWF did not alter this interaction at all. Human vWD alloantibody IgG and the rabbit antibody against vWF showed a partial inhibitory activity to plasma FVIII as well as r-FVIII. The inhibition reached a plateau with residual FVIII activity. FVIII-Ab were not detected in human alloantibody or in rabbit antibody preparations. In contrast, hemophiliac FVIII inhibitor showed FVIII-AB. This human vWD alloantibody behaves like polyclonal heterologous antibodies, and their inhibition of FVIII seems to be nonspecific due to a steric hindrance mechanism provided that both have no FVIII antibodies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the frequency localization, latency and clinical staging of synchronic and methachronic tumors in patients with resected carcinoma of the colon during the period 1979-1989. SETTING A third level hospital in Mexico City. RESULTS Synchronic tumors. Nine individuals (7.2%) of 123 patients reviewed had synchronic tumors. Their mean age was 63 years (26-78); 4 were men and 5 women. Localization and staging were: transverse colon + sigmoid (B1 + A); both ascendant colon (C2 + A); transverse colon + rectum(B3 + A); both descendent colon (B2 + A); sigmoid + descendent colon (A + A); transverse + descendent colon (B2 + B2); ascendant + sigmoid colon (D + B2); both sigmoid (B1 + A); ascendant + transverse colon (B1 + B2). In four patients, the presence of the synchronic tumors modified the surgical procedure. Methachronic tumors. Two cases (3.2%) were detected in 61 patients followed more than one year after colonic cancer surgery; the latency times were 16 and 23 months. In one case staging was A and the other was an in situ carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS The frequency of synchronic and methachronic tumors in similar to that reported in the English literature. We emphasize the need to perform routine control colonoscopies preparatively and during the followup of these patients.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to search for regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) abnormalities in adolescents with initial-stage schizophrenia by means of brain single-photon emission tomography (SPET) using technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (HMPAO). SPET studies were performed on a homogeneous sample of 15 carefully selected adolescents with a recent diagnosis of schizophrenia, and without previous electroconvulsive or antipsychotic drug treatment. Computed tomography (CT) and electro-encephalographic (EEG) studies were performed in all patients. Qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of 99mTc-HMPAO SPET studies showed an impaired rCBF in 12 patients (80%). The most common pattern was a decreased uptake of 99mTc-HMPAO in the frontal lobes, usually in the left hemisphere. Conventional and quantitative EEG was positive in 12 (80%) and 15 (100%) patients, respectively. CT findings were positive in two patients (13%). There was a high level of concordance between SPET and EEG results and between SPET and clinical features (P>0.05). This study suggests that previously untreated patients in the first stages of schizophrenia present functional abnormalities that are revealed by brain SPET.

Abstract
1. Nifedipine induces relaxation in aortic segments from Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) of 5-week-, 3-month-, 6-month- and 1.5-year-old precontracted with 50 mM K+ or 0.1 microM noradrenaline (NA). 2. In WKY rat segments precontracted with K+, nifedipine relaxation was reduced at 1.5 years. However, in SHR segments, the greatest relaxation was observed at 1.5 years. The relaxation elicited by nifedipine in segments from WKY of 6-month and 1.5-year-old precontracted with NA was higher than that reached at 5-week- and 3-month-old. However, the relaxation induced in SHR of 6-month and 1.5-year-old was only higher than that obtained at 5-week-old. 3. Relaxations elicited by nifedipine in segments from WKY precontracted with K+ were smaller than those observed in age-matched SHR segments. 4. The endothelium positively and negatively modulates the relaxation to nifedipine in segments from SHR and WKY rats of different ages precontracted with K+, respectively. However, in segments of both strain precontracted with NA, endothelium removal did not alter the relaxations obtained at different ages. 5. These results suggest that the relaxation elicited by nifedipine: (1) depends on the strain, with a tendency to be greater in the hypertensive strain; (2) is negatively and positively modulated by endothelium in WKY and SHR, respectively, and (3) is influenced by age, and this influence depends on both the contractile agent and the strain.

Abstract
1. The Ca(2+)-channel agonist, Bay K 8644, induced small contractions in aortae from Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats of 5-week-, 3-month-, 1-year- and 1.5-year-old, which were unaltered with age. These contractions were increased by partial depolarization with 15 mM K+. 2. In segments from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), the contractions obtained in both situations were similar and equivalent to those observed in segments from normotensive animals partially depolarized. Responses to Bay K 8644 were modified by age only in tissues from the SHR, the responses to this agent in basal conditions being increased in tissues from 3-month- and 1-year-old animals and depressed in those from 1.5-year SHR. 3. A reduction of the response to Bay K 8644 was observed in partial depolarized endothelium denuded segments from WKY of all ages, and no modification in basal situation. However, the direct contractions induced by Bay K 8644 in aortae from 3-month- and 1.5-year-old SHR were reduced by endothelium removal. 4. These results suggest that: (a) in the hypertensive strain the voltage-gated Ca2+ channels seem to be partially activated; (b) the direct contractions induced by Bay K 8644 were unaltered by age in aortae from WKY but increased in tissues from SHR of 3-month-and-1-year old and depressed in those from 1.5 years, and (c) the contractions evoked by Bay K 8644 seem to involve an endothelium-derived contracting factor in aortae from both strains, or the endothelium produces a partial depolarization of vascular smooth muscle that increases the responsiveness to Bay K 8644.

Abstract
To date very few studies that analyze the prevalence of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) in healthy subjects have been reported. No data based on a systematic analysis of normal subjects with positive ACA is available. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of ACA; its clinical significance and relationship to the lupus anticoagulant (LA) and other autoimmune parameters in an apparently healthy population. 552 normal blood donors from a blood bank were randomly selected. ACA positive donors who consented were monitored over a period of twelve months and tested every three months. ACA (IgG and IgM isotypes) were quantitated by enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA). The prevalence for IgG ACA in our donor population was estimated to be 6.5%, and 9.4% for IgM ACA, which is similar to the one previously reported for IgG and slightly higher for IgM.

Abstract
We describe a case of a patient with recurrent syncope without cardiac disease and with a normal electrophysiological study. The patient underwent a head-up tilt table test as a diagnostic method. During the test the individual suffered a twenty-nine seconds cardiac asystole. He recovered the cardiac rhythm nineteen seconds after having adopted the supine position and with resuscitation maneuvers. In the consulted bibliography, there is no evidence of such a long asystole induced during a head-up tilt table test, where the patient required a chest thumping. Commonly the spontaneous recuperation of the cardiac rhythm takes place immediately after the patient adopts a horizontal position. This case supports the hypothesis that the asystole provoked by a cardioinhibitor reflex in patients suffering from a vasovagal syncope, can become potentially lethal and therefore lead to sudden cardiac death.

Abstract
In order to differentiate the cardiac or oesophageal origin of chest pain, 55 patients with chest pain, normal coronary arteriogram and normal left ventricular function, were studied. Patients were evaluated with ergonovine test to induce coronary artery spasm and oesophageal function study (including basal manometry in all cases, ClH acid instillation in 53, manometry during ClH instillation in 32 and edrophonium test in 9). There was coronary artery spasm following ergonovine test in 8 patients (group 1) and negative results in 47 (group 2). There was oesophageal disfunction in 50% patients in group 1 and in 62% patients in group 2 (p = NS). The incidence of motor disorders or chest pain following acid instillation was not significatively different in both groups. Nevertheless, in group 1 a tendency to a greater incidence of oesophageal spasm was observed while in group 2 unspecified disorders were more frequent. Thus, in patients with chest pain and normal coronary arteriogram, we always must discard coronary artery spasm and oesophageal disfunction, because, due to a probably common cause, association between both disorders is frequent.

Abstract
1. Ouabain induced concentration-dependent contractions in segments of human placental arteries and veins, which were practically abolished in a Ca(2+)-free medium and not modified by the calcium antagonist nifedipine or the calcium agonist Bay K 8644. 2. Ouabain (10(-4) M) elicited a time-dependent enhancement of the 45Ca2+ uptake, which remained equal in presence of nifedipine or Bay K 8644. 3. The Na+/Ca2+ exchange blocker amiloride reduced both the contractions and the 45Ca2+ uptake induced by ouabain, whereas the Na ionophore monensin produced a parallel shift to the left of the concentration-response curve to ouabain. 4. These results suggest that ouabain-induced contractions in these vessels are dependent on the extracellular Ca2+, which mainly enters into the cell through the Na+/Ca2+ exchange system.

Abstract
A group of 53 with angina pectoris-like chest pain and normal coronary arteriography was studied. Nine of these patients had a positive ergonovine test and were diagnosed as coronary spasm or vasospastic angina. In four of these nine patients there was evidence of an accessory esophageal disease responsible for the chest pain. In 44 patients organic or functional ischemic heart disease was excluded. The possible esophageal origin of the pain was studied by means of esophageal manometry and acid and endofonium provocation. The final results were that 15 patients had pain of an esophageal origin and 13 had an esophageal disease that made the esophagus a likely, or at least possible, source of pain.

Abstract
Osteogenesis imperfecta one of the most common disorders of connective tissue, has been known for centuries. The most characteristic alterations which define it are: osteoporosis, osseous fragility with multiple fractures, blue sclerae, deafness and imperfect dentinogenesis. Important advances in the biochemical, anatomopathological, genetic, therapeutic and prophylactic fields have resulted in a great present-day interest in this disease. In this work we report six cases of osteogenesis imperfecta according to the current classification and we review the most outstanding aspects.
