Picorna-like viruses of young turkeys: pathogenesis of a disease of poults caused by a picorna-like virus

A strain of picorna-like virus cultivated in the yolk sac membranes of inoculated eggs was inoculated into 6-day-old turkeys. Clinical signs and mortality were observed between two and three weeks. Virus was seen in the faeces. The post-mortem and histological changes in the organs of infected birds were highly suggestive of a viral aetiology. The virus was reisolated from organs of sick and dead poults by inoculating SPF embryonated eggs.

An Osteoid Variant of Cutaneous Melanoma in a Dog Detected by S100 and Melan A Markers

Osteoid malignant melanoma is a rare type of melanoma described in humans and dogs with some areas of bone differentiation. In this tumour, the origin of the bone matrix remains unclear. We report one case of this variant with, for the first time, a cutaneous origin in a dog. Malignant melanomas are aggressive tumours. Amelanotic tumours are sometimes difficult to recognize as they require immunohistochemical evaluation for an adequate diagnosis and we have used anti-vimentin, S100, and melan A antibodies for identification. Melan A is less sensitive but more specific than S100 in identifying amelanotic melanomas. This tumour was positive for vimentin, S100 and melan A, including the areas of osteoid. These results suggest osteoid differentiation of tumour cells rather than induced stromal metaplasia.

Comparative morphology of epicorneal conjunctival membranes in rabbits and human pterygium

A rarely described ocular lesion in the rabbit is presented following the observation of four cases. It is a membrane of conjunctival origin that advances progressively, without adhering, towards the center of the cornea. Clinically the lesion in rabbits looks like pterygium in man, but with several differences: in rabbits, the conjunctival fold is absolutely free and does not penetrate into the superficial corneal layers. It originates from all the limbal circumference in a symetric growth. The cornea itself remains unaltered. The fold consists of fibroblasts and collagen. The microscopic findings suggest the lesion is possibly of a collagenous dysplasia.

MIB-1 immunoreactivity correlates with biologic behaviour in canine cutaneous melanoma

The growth fraction of 68 canine cutaneous melanomas was determined by immunostaining with MIB-1, a monoclonal antibody to a Ki-67 epitope that recognizes all proliferating cells. Fifty tumours were classified histologically as benign and 18 as malignant. The Ki-67 proliferative index (percentage of positive cells over 500 neoplastic cells) was low (< 15%) in 55 cases and high (> or = 15%) in 13 cases. High Ki-67 proliferative index and histological malignancy were both associated with significantly poorer 2-year survival (P < 0.0001). However, the predictive value of the Ki-67 proliferative index (97%) was higher than the predictive value of classical histology (91%). The evaluation of the growth fraction by the Ki-67 proliferative index is highly predictive of the biological behaviour of canine cutaneous melanoma.

Immunocytochemistry of canine thyroid tumors

Immunocytochemical studies using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method with commercial antibodies against thyroglobulin, calcitonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuron specific enolase (NSE), somatostatin, and neurotensin were performed on 38 Bouin-fixed, paraffin-embedded canine thyroid tumors obtained from necropsy and surgical files from 2 Ecoles Nationales Vétérinaires (Alfort and Nantes, France) and from the Laboratoire d'Histo-Cytopathologie Vétérinaire, Maisons-Alfort (France). The tumors consisted of two follicular adenomas, nine follicular carcinomas, nine solid carcinomas, 12 follicular-compact-cellular carcinomas, and six C-cell carcinomas. All 32 follicular-cell tumors were stained positively for thyroglobulin, half of them had weak to moderate positive immunoreactivity for NSE, and all histologic patterns were represented. They had no immunoreactivity for somatostatin or neurotensin. Four C-cell carcinomas had a solid alveolar pattern, while two had a pseudo follicular pattern characterized by uneven, often coalescent, pseudo-follicular formations with a multilayered epithelium surrounding a cavity that often contained red blood cells. Four C-cell carcinomas had uneven immunoreactivity for calcitonin, while all six were positive for CGRP or NSE. Immunoreactivity for CGRP was stronger or more widespread than positivity for calcitonin when both occurred in the same tumor. Some cells of three C-cell carcinomas had positive immunoreactivity for somatostatin. No immunoreactivity for neurotensin was detected. Seven tumors of follicular cell origin contained a few cells positive for calcitonin or CGRP, while three C-cell carcinomas had a few cells positive for thyroglobulin. These tumors were considered to contain entrapped remnants of normal thyroid tissue rather than being dual hormone producing tumors.
