Linear interband optical refraction and absorption in strained black phosphorene

Strain effects have been widely addressed in monolayer black phosphorus (MBP) due to its significant influence on the orbital hybridization of atoms. In this theoretical contribution, we use the tight-binding model, the Harrison rule and the Kubo formula to describe the optical refraction and absorption of MBP in detail. The analytical study of the band gap in strained MBP demonstrates electronic phase transitions from semiconductor-to-semimetal/metal and semiconductor-to-insulator, in which both the compressive and tensile strains act linearly on the band gap alterations. The critical strains corresponding to these phase transitions are fully characterized as well. Our calculations show that the variation of the refraction inflections and absorption peaks depends on the strained band gap, however; the band gap changes under out-of-plane strains are different than the in-plane ones. The conditions under which this discrepancy is significant and/or negligible are investigated. Moreover, the dedication of minimal/maximal optical refraction and/or absorption in MBP to both in-plane and out-of-plane strains are fully addressed. Our theoretical results clarify the strain-induced interplay between the band gap and optical properties to propose a wide range of applications in nano-optoelectronics.

Pregnancy and Calving Rates of Cloned Dromedary Camels Produced by Conventional and Handmade Cloning Techniques and In Vitro and In Vivo Matured Oocytes

Despite practical implication of cloning in camelids, its broad application has been hampered by technical and biological problems. Method of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) and oocyte competence are the principal technical and biological factors, respectively, that determine the cloning efficiency. This study, therefore, investigated differential contributions of two SCNT methods [modified handmade cloning (mHMC) vs. conventional (cNT)] and two recipient oocyte sources [abattoir-derived (Vitro) vs. FSH-stimulated (Vivo)] on the efficiency of dromedary camel cloning. The mHMC method supported similar rates of fusion, cleavage, and total blastocyst development, compared to conventional NT (cNT) (94, 89.1, and 68.5% vs. 78.9, 92, and 73.5%, respectively) when Vivo oocytes are used. However, using Vitro oocytes, mHMC supported significantly higher rates for these criteria, except for the cleavage, compared to cNT (95.5, 76.2, 25.2% vs. 75.3, 76.7, and 13.9%, respectively). A total of seven clones were born from mHMC/Vitro (four calves), mHMC/Vivo (one calf), cNT/Vitro (one calf), and mHMC/Vivo&Vivo (one calf)-derived embryos with overall efficiencies of 31.9, 26.6, 20, and 30% for initial pregnancy, 10.6, 6.6, 7.5, and 5% for development to term, and 8.5, 6.6, 2.5, 5% for development to weaving, respectively. To conclude, the quality of recipient oocyte greatly impacts cloning efficiency in vitro with no apparent carrying over effect on cloning efficiency in vivo, but the efficiency of SCNT method may compensate for the initial poor oocyte competence during in vitro and in vivo development of cloned embryos. The introduced mHMC could be a superior alternative to conventional method for simple, fast, and efficient production of cloned offspring in camelids.

Magneto-EELS of armchair boronitrene nanoribbons

The evolution of the electron energy loss spectrum (EELS) of ultranarrow armchair boron nitride nanoribbons (aBNNRs) during low and high photon energy transfers has been studied theoretically when a magnetic field and temperature gradient are applied. In order to achieve this goal, the widely used linear response theory within the Green’s function theory was employed. Here, using the EELS we show that σ ↦ σ* or π ↦ π* and σ ↦ π* or π ↦ σ* excitations corresponding to the intraband and interband transitions, respectively, can be tuned by ribbon width, magnetic field, wave vector transfer, and temperature. A comparison with experimental studies reveals that for realistic ribbon widths, i.e. 10–100 nm, both excitations are weak. However, we observe that only transitions between the same states, i.e. σ ↦ σ* or π ↦ π* can be controlled with a magnetic field due to the localized highest occupied and lowest unoccupied states at low-energy regions and different states are not influenced when the magnetic field is applied. Interestingly, the detailed shape of the magneto-EELS of the 7-aBNNR indicates a direct-to-indirect band gap transition when the wave vector transfer is perpendicular to the 7-aBNNR plane. Finally, we discover that there is an anomalous behavior for the temperature dependence of the magneto-EELS in general. The present work brings forward the understanding of the magneto-EELS of ultranarrow aBNNRs under different environmental conditions for logic applications in nanoplasmonics.

Skeletogenesis in the Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus and its correlation with gene expression of vitamin K-dependent proteins during larval development

The present study describes morphological development of the skeleton in the Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus and discusses the hypothesis that expression of genes encoding vitamin K-dependent proteins (VKDP) might be correlated with the mineralization of skeletal tissues during early development in sturgeons. Results showed that development of cartilage started just after hatching (mean ± S.D., 10·9 ± 0·7 mm in total length, LT ) in the head and notochord, whereas the first signs of mineralization occurred in the dentary and in the dermopalatine and palatopterygoid elements of the upper jaw, coinciding with the onset of exogenous feeding (20·1 ± 1·5 mm LT ). All branchial arch elements developed between 19·3 and 22·3 mm LT , whereas mineralization was only observed in tooth plates associated with the hypobranchial 1 and gill rakers at 20·8 ± 1·5 mm LT and 48·4 ± 6·4 mm LT , respectively. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that transcripts of VKDP genes including bone Gla protein (bgp), matrix Gla protein (mgp) and Gla rich protein (grp) genes were significantly up-regulated during the transition to exogenous feeding, supporting hypotheses about relevance of the above-mentioned genes in chondrogenesis at early developmental stages. The strong mineralization of skeletal elements from 21·5 to 27·3 mm LT (20 days post hatch) was in accordance with the maximal levels of bgp, mgp and grp expression indicating a correlation between development of the skeleton and the expression of VKDP genes. These data are important for evaluating A. persicus larval quality, understanding the influence of rearing biotic and abiotic factors on skeletogenesis and recognizing the occurrence of skeletal deformities in this species.

Differential expression of foxl2 and cyp19a1a mRNA during gonad developmental stages in great sturgeon Huso huso

This study aimed to determine the sex specificity and expression pattern of foxl2 and cyp19a1a genes in great sturgeon Huso huso gonads during gonadal sex differentiation and development. The results revealed that foxl2 and cyp19a1a mainly expressed in female gonads and during gonad development the foxl2 and cyp19a1a mRNA expression is required for ovarian development.
