Abstract
Adult Anisakis Dujardin, 1845 were found in two specimens of killer whale Orcinus orca and one specimen of franciscana Pontoporia blainvillei stranded from off the coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Genetic identification of the nematodes (N = 144) was performed by sequence analysis of the mitochondrial (mtDNA cox2) and the nuclear (nas 10 nDNA) gene loci. Anisakis pegreffii and Anisakis berlandi were detected in the two individuals of O. orca, while Anisakis typica and A. pegreffii were identified in P. blainvillei. Morphological and morphometric analysis also carried out on adult specimens of A. pegreffii and A. berlandi has allowed to underlining the usefulness of genetic/molecular markers in their recognition. This represents the first record of A. pegreffii in O. orca and P. blainvillei and of A. berlandi in O. orca. This is also the first sympatric and syntopic occurrence, as adults, of A. pegreffii and A. berlandi from the Austral Region of the Atlantic Ocean waters. These results provide insights into the knowledge of the host ranges and geographical distribution of these parasites in the basin waters of the region. Pontoporia blainvillei showed low abundance values of infection with Anisakis spp., which is the general pattern for coastal dolphins in the area, whereas O. orca harboured higher abundance of Anisakis spp. than those previously recorded among cetacean species in the Argentine Sea. Differences in the Anisakis spp. distribution and their parasitic loads, observed among the three host specimens, are discussed in relation to the oceanographic parameters, as well as to the host ecology. The usefulness of genetic/molecular markers in the recognition of adults of the sibling species A. pegreffii and A. berlandi with considerable overlapping in morphometric and morphological characters was underlined. The distribution of Anisakis species from Southwestern Atlantic waters is discussed in relation to their value as indicators for studies on the zoogeography of their hosts at a regional-scale level.

Abstract
An advantageous micromechanical technique to deposit large area graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) thin films on a low-density polyethylene substrate is proposed. This method is based on the application of shear-stress and friction forces to a graphite platelets/ethanol paste on the surface of a polymeric substrate; it allows us to obtain a continuous film of superimposed nanoplatelets mainly made of 13-30 graphene layers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements support the occurrence of a partial exfoliation of the graphite platelets due to shear-stress and friction forces applied during film formation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations point out that the surface of the polymer is uniformly coated by the overlap of GNPs, and TEM analysis reveals the tendency of the nanoplatelets to align parallel to the interface plane. It has been found that the deposited samples, under white light illumination, exhibit a negative photoconductivity and a linear photoresponse as a function of the applied voltage and the optical power density in the -120 ÷ 120 mV and 20.9 ÷ 286.2 mW cm-2 ranges, respectively.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose a general and flexible access to spirocyclopropyl oxindoles by a domino Michael/intramolecular nucleophilic substitution pathway with variously substituted vinyl selenones and enolizable oxindoles in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The spirocyclopropyl oxindole being a privileged scaffold, some of the synthesized compounds were selected for biological evaluation. Compound showed selective anti-HIV-1 activity thanks to its ability to inhibit the reverse transcriptase.

Abstract
Human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness is a severe, neglected tropical disease caused by the extracellular parasite Trypanosoma brucei. The disease, which leads to chronic neuroinflammation, is characterized by sleep and wake disturbances, documented also in rodent models. In rats and mice infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei, we here tested the hypothesis that the disease could target neurons of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) containing orexin (OX)-A or melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), implicated in sleep/wake regulation. In the cerebrospinal fluid of infected rats, the OX-A level was significantly decreased early after parasite neuroinvasion, and returned to the control level at an advanced disease stage. The number of immunohistochemically characterized OX-A and MCH neurons decreased significantly in infected rats during disease progression and in infected mice at an advanced disease stage. A marked reduction of the complexity of dendritic arborizations of OX-A neurons was documented in infected mice. The evaluation of NeuN-immunoreactive neurons did not reveal significant neuronal loss in the LH of infected mice, thus suggesting a potential selective vulnerability of OX-A and MCH neurons. Immunophenotyping and quantitative analysis showed in infected mice marked activation of microglial cells surrounding OX-A neurons. Day/night oscillation of c-Fos baseline expression was used as marker of OX-A neuron activity in mice. In control animals Fos was expressed in a higher proportion of OX-A neurons in the night (activity) phase than in the day (rest) phase. Interestingly, in infected mice the diurnal spontaneous Fos oscillation was reversed, with a proportion of OX-A/Fos neurons significantly higher at daytime than at nighttime. Altogether the findings reveal a progressive decrease of OX-A and MCH neurons and dysregulation of OX-A neuron diurnal activity in rodent models of sleeping sickness. The data point to the involvement of these peptidergic neurons in the pathogenesis of sleep/wake alterations in the disease and to their vulnerability to inflammatory signaling.

Abstract
This communication presents the main results about the design and in-house fabrication of a new solid-state neutron detector, which produces a DC output signal proportional to the thermal neutron fluence rate. The detector has been developed within the framework of the 3-y project NESCOFI@BTF of INFN (CSN V). Due to its sensitivity, photon rejection, low cost and minimum size, this device is suited to be used in moderator-based spectrometers.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of GNP/LDPE nanocomposites (graphite nanoplatelets/low density polyethylene) have been investigated, in order to establish the effect of nanoscale reinforcement within the polymer matrix. Results show that the presence of the filler does not involve a change in the microscopic structure of the polymer. However, on a macroscopic scale, GNPs limit the mobility of the polymer chains, resulting in an increase in stiffness for the final composite. Orientation of GNPs within the LDPE matrix is also an important issue that affects mechanical properties and it has been evaluated by testing nanocomposites made by different manufacturing techniques (compression moulding and blown extrusion). The comparison between the experimental data and the Halpin-Tsai model shows that the orientation of GNPs due to the extrusion process leads to values of tensile modulus higher than that obtained with the randomly oriented disposition resulting from the compression moulding technique.

Recently, a prototype hand-held system integrating a NB sensor in a metal detector has been developed within the EU-funded DIAMINE Project. The results obtained in terms of performance of the NB systems and limitations in its use are presented in this work. It is found that the performance of NB sensors is strongly limited by the presence of the soil moisture and by its small-scale variations. The use of the neutron hit distribution to reduce false alarms is explored.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of the study is to evaluate the short- and long-term efficacy of complete laparoscopic excision of deep endometriosis, without rectum involvement, with the opening and partial excision of the posterior vaginal fornix. METHODS Thirty-one patients were included in the study with symptomatic extensive disease including involvement of the cul-de-sac, rectovaginal space and posterior vaginal fornix without rectum involvement. Endoscopic surgery was performed with complete separation of rectovaginal space and in-block resection of the diseased tissue, opening and partial excision of the posterior vaginal fornix and vaginal closure either by laparoscopic or by vaginal route. Patients filled in questionnaires on pain before and 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months after surgical treatment. RESULTS No intraoperative complications were observed; 65% were free of analgesic on post-operative day 2, 38% had total remission of chronic pain and 22% were improved; 38% had total remission of dysmenorrhoea and 22% were improved; 45% had total remission of dyspareunia and 25% were improved. Follow-up improvement of symptoms was statistically significant and was maintained for 5 years without recurrence of the disease or repeated surgery (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Complete surgical resection of deep infiltrative endometriosis with excision of the adjacent tissue of the posterior vaginal fornix improves quality of life with persistence of results for long time in patients not responsive to medical treatment.

Abstract
An experiment was carried out using dairy ewes to study the transfer of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) from feed to milk and from milk to cheese. The effects of AFB1 on liver function and hematological parameters were also investigated. Fifteen ewes were assigned to treatments in replicated 3 x 3 Latin squares. The experimental groups received 32, 64, or 128 microg/d of pure AFB1 for 7 d followed by 5 d of clearance. On the sixth day of the first period, the total daily milk produced by each ewe was collected separately and processed into cheese. The results indicate that the level of AFB1 used did not adversely affect animal health and milk production traits. The aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) concentrations in milk approached a steady-state condition in all treated groups between 2 and 7 d after the start of treatment. The mean AFM1 concentrations of treated groups in steady-state condition (184.4, 324.7, and 596.9 ng/kg in ewes fed 32, 64, or 128 microg of AFB1, respectively) were significantly affected by the AFB1 doses. The AFM1 concentration was linearly related to the AFB1 intake/kg of BW. The carry-over values of AFB1 from feed into AFM1 in milk (0.26 to 0.33%) were not influenced by the AFB1 doses. The AFM1 concentrations in curd and whey were linearly related to the AFM1 concentrations in the unprocessed milk.

Abstract
We have searched for a deeply bound kaonic state by using the FINUDA spectrometer installed at the e(+)e(-) collider DAPhiNE. Almost monochromatic K(-)'s produced through the decay of phi(1020) mesons are used to observe K(-) absorption reactions stopped on very thin nuclear targets. Taking this unique advantage, we have succeeded to detect a kaon-bound state K(-)pp through its two-body decay into a Lambda hyperon and a proton. The binding energy and the decay width are determined from the invariant-mass distribution as 115(+6)(-5)(stat)(+3)(-4)(syst) MeV and 67(+14)(-11)(stat)(+2)(-3)(syst) MeV, respectively.

Abstract
The TRADE project (TRiga Accelerator Driven Experiment), to be performed at the existing TRIGA reactor at ENEA Casaccia, has been proposed as a validation of the accelerator-driven system (ADS) concept. TRADE will be the first experiment in which the three main components of an ADS--the accelerator, spallation target and sub-critical blanket--are coupled at a power level sufficient to encounter reactivity feedback effects. As such, TRADE represents the necessary intermediate step in the development of hybrid transmutation systems, its expected outcomes being considered crucial--in terms of proof of stability of operation, dynamic behaviour and licensing issues--for the subsequent realisation of an ADS Transmutation Demonstrator. An essential role in the feasibility study of the experiment is played by radioprotection calculations. Such a system exhibits new characteristics with respect to a traditional reactor, owing to the presence of the proton accelerator. As beam losses always occur under normal operating conditions of an accelerator, shielding studies need to be performed not only around the reactor but also along the beam line from the accelerator to the spallation target. This paper illustrates a preliminary evaluation, using Monte Carlo methods, of the additional shielding to be located around the reactor structures, the beam transport line and the existing reactor building to allow access into the reactor hall and to restrict the doses outside to their legal limits.

Abstract
A large-area scanning system using 14 MeV tagged neutrons has been built. The associated (4)He particles emitted in the D+T reaction are detected in an array of Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters that defines a scanning plane having about 10 x 100 cm(2) area. Coincident gamma-rays are detected by 10 BaF(2) scintillators. The capability of the system to determine the presence and the position of samples and to perform an on-line background subtraction is demonstrated. Test with landmines are also reported. This technique allows a significant improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio searching for hidden threat materials. The use with portable sealed-tube generators is foreseen.

Abstract
The synthesis of analogues of N,2-diphenyl-N-(4-piperidyl)acetamide endowed with antiarrhythmic activity is reported. Benzoyl, cinnamoyl, acetyl and propionyl groups replace the phenacyl group as N-acyl substituent, while pyridine replaces benzene as aromatic ring bound to the amide nitrogen. The title compounds were evaluated for antiarrhythmic activity on experimental arrhythmias induced by aconitine in rats. The presence of a n-propyl chain and an unsubstituted cinnamoyl moiety (1j) gives the highest protection against aconitine induced extrasystoles while the best efficacy against lethal effects is due to the presence of a n-propyl chain and an acetyl moiety (1m).

Abstract
The efficacy and the optimal dose of systemic alpha-interferon treatment of genital human papillomavirus infection is now under discussion because of high cost, low compliance and systemic toxicity of this drug. Recent studies seem to suggest that natural alpha-interferon may also have antiviral efficacy in humans after oral administration of low doses of the drug. For this reason, the efficacy and side-effects of an oral preparation of natural alpha-Interferon (OROFERONE-IFI) have been evaluated in a randomized, placebo controlled trial. We report here the results of this preliminary study. Low doses (150U tid for 8 weeks) of the drug were administered to 12 patients with mild cervical dysplasia and human papillomavirus infection. A significantly higher proportion of Interferon treated subjects showed a colposcopic and histological regression of the lesion after months of treatment in comparison with 9 placebo treated patients (75% vs 30%) without major side effects. These results seem to justify wider evaluations of this approach to Interferon treatment characterized by lower costs and fewer side effects in comparison with traditional systemic high dose treatment of alpha Interferon.

Abstract
Two series of hydrazonic compounds related to main classes of inhibitors of fungal squalene epoxidase (SE) were designed and prepared on the hypothesis of a pharmacophoric model. The antifungal activity of the new compounds was evaluated in vitro against dermatophytes, moulds and yeasts. Antidermatophytic activity resulted for several hydrazones, particularly for those containing a tett-butylacetylenic group, supporting the hypothesis that the introduction of a hydrazonic function in the model could retain the antimycotic activity.

Abstract
Seventeen (un)substituted N-[4-(propyl)cyclohexyl]-amides (6a-h, 7a-h and 8) were synthesized and tested as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents. The substituents on the aromatic ring were chosen in order to study the influence of electron-withdrawing or electron-donating residues, that change the electronic density on the aromatic moiety. The pharmacological results allow drawing some preliminary considerations on structure-activity relationships.

Abstract
A series of substituted N-cycloalkyl benzamides, cinnamamides, and indole-3-carboxamides were synthesized and evaluated for their analgesic, antiinflammatory activities as well as for their gastrointestinal irritation liability. Indomethacin was used as reference drug in both tests. Compounds 1k, 1b, 1h, 1j, and 1g were the most active in the antiinflammatory paw edema inhibition test, with a sharply dose-dependent effect. In terms of the analgesic activity (acetic acid writhing test), the most active compound was 5a followed by 3a, but many other compounds were found to have a non-negligible potency. Even in this case, the effect was dose dependent.

Abstract
A method for 'in vivo' determination of the oxytetracyclin residues in ovine milk at low levels is described. Two groups of Sardinian breed sheep were treated with a dose of oxytetracycline by intramammary infusion and intramuscular administration, respectively. Oxytetracycline residues in extracts obtained from a preliminary cleanup procedure, were detected by an isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Linear calibration plots were obtained over a large concentration range of 1 mg ml(-1)-10 ng ml(-1), with correlation coefficients higher than 0.996. Recoveries between 85.8 and 98.9% were obtained. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of determination (LOQ) were 5.2 and 17.5 ng ml(-1), respectively. This method would be useful for routine monitoring of oxytetracycline residues in ovine dairy milk.

Abstract
PURPOSE Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after intraocular lens (IOL) implantation has a multifactored pathogenesis. Capsulorhexis and capsular bag implantation of a one-piece, biconvex poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) IOL are likely to reduce the PCO incidence. This study was performed to determine whether an ideal capsulorhexis size able to reduce PCO incidence exists. METHODS A retrospective study of 107 patients who had extracapsular cataract extraction with capsulorhexis and capsular bag IOL implantation was carried out. The PCO site (central, paracentral, and peripheral) and degree (mild, moderate, and severe) were evaluated in relation to the capsulorhexis edge location relative to the IOL optic. Slitlamp biomicroscopy and photography and examination with a three-mirror Goldmann lens were performed. Patients were divided into three groups. Group 1: capsulorhexis free edge located on the IOL optic for 360 degrees; Group 2: capsulorhexis free edge located asymmetrically on and peripherally to the IOL optic; Group 3: capsulorhexis free edge located peripherally to IOL optic for 360 degrees. Each group was divided into two subgroups; one received polyHema IOLs and the second, PMMA IOLs. RESULTS In Groups 1 and 2, the capsular transparency was higher than in Group 3 (P < .04). Central opacification percentage was lower in Group 1 than in Groups 2 and 3 (P < .04). No statistically significant differences between the polyHema and the PMMA subgroups were seen. CONCLUSIONS Capsulorhexis with a slightly smaller diameter than the IOL optic appears to be better than a large-size capsulorhexis in reducing the incidence of PCO.

Abstract
The corneal endothelium in diabetics is particularly susceptible to surgical trauma. This is related to the presence of morphological alterations of endothelial cells and to a supposedly concomitant functional failure of the endothelium in these patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate the corneal endothelial function in diabetics. A fluorophotometric study was performed on 3 groups of diabetic subjects without retinopathy, with nonproliferative retinopathy and with proliferative retinopathy compared with an age-matched control group. We evidenced a significant increase in corneal thickness and in passive corneal permeability in diabetics with severe retinal involvement. These findings are not related with a proportional significant increase in endothelial pump function. We suggest an altered regulation in corneal hydration in diabetic patients depending on the functional failure of endothelial cells that is likely to be connected with corneal biochemical modifications caused by an altered glucidic metabolism.

Abstract
Forty amides, formamidines and trifluoromethylsulfonylamides bearing on the nitrogen a cyclohexyl residue, eventually 2-substituted, were prepared and tested for analgesic activity against a chemical stimulus. Good activity was exhibited by amides 9, 11 and 28, by formamidine 34, as well as by triflyamide 40. Eleven additional compounds exhibited a moderate activity.

Abstract
The ontogeny of muscarinic cholinergic receptors has been studied in different regions of the human fetal brain. For a comparison, the same study has been carried out on newborn and premature brain. Regarding on the areas examined (frontal cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, thalamus and basal ganglia) either an increase or a decrease of receptor density during gestation was observed. Thus, the ontogeny of the receptors follows a different pattern in areas which differ in function, cholinergic innervation and embryological origin. However, in all the regions the affinity of the binding site for the ligand [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate [3H]QNB was very similar to that reported for muscarinic receptors from adult mammalian brain. Data obtained from agonist binding (acetylcholine and carbachol) revealed the presence of a high (H)- and a low-affinity binding site (L) from 10 weeks of gestation. The selective antagonist pirenzepine (PZ) also distinguished two different muscarinic receptor subtypes, which however had higher affinity than that seen in adult brain. In conclusion, during ontogeny, the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor shares some but not all of the pharmacological properties shown in the adult brain.

Abstract
Heterogeneity of muscarinic cholinergic receptors was investigated in chick embryo retina throughout development and in chicks immediately after hatching. The presence of a homogeneous receptor population was evidenced by antagonist binding. The affinity of antagonists increased up to day 14 of incubation, when synaptogenesis occurs. After this stage, it remained substantially unchanged. The number of receptors increased in embryos until hatching. On the contrary, agonists, such as acetylcholine and carbachol, bound to two (high- and low-affinity) binding sites. Through development, the affinity of both significantly increased until day 14, further substantiating the hypothesis of a maturation of the receptor pattern which precedes synapse formation. Muscarinic cholinergic binding seems to identify 3 critical steps in retinal neuronal development. The first is between 7 and 9 days of incubation, the second when synaptogenesis occurs and the third after initiation of function.
