Emergence of common concepts, symmetries and conformity in agent groups-an information-theoretic model

The paper studies principles behind structured, especially symmetric, representations through enforced inter-agent conformity. For this, we consider agents in a simple environment who extract individual representations of this environment through an information maximization principle. The representations obtained by different agents differ in general to some extent from each other. This gives rise to ambiguities in how the environment is represented by the different agents. Using a variant of the information bottleneck principle, we extract a 'common conceptualization' of the world for this group of agents. It turns out that the common conceptualization appears to capture much higher regularities or symmetries of the environment than the individual representations. We further formalize the notion of identifying symmetries in the environment both with respect to 'extrinsic' (birds-eye) operations on the environment as well as with respect to 'intrinsic' operations, i.e. subjective operations corresponding to the reconfiguration of the agent's embodiment. Remarkably, using the latter formalism, one can re-wire an agent to conform to the highly symmetric common conceptualization to a much higher degree than an unrefined agent; and that, without having to re-optimize the agent from scratch. In other words, one can 're-educate' an agent to conform to the de-individualized 'concept' of the agent group with comparatively little effort.

Excretion kinetics of 1,3-dichlorobenzene and its urinary metabolites after controlled airborne exposure in human volunteers

The solvent 1,3-dichlorobenzene (1,3-DCB) is formed during thermal decomposition of the initiator 2,4-dichlorobenzoylperoxide in the production of silicone rubber with potential exposure of production workers as shown in previous works. Despite a threshold limit value (MAK value) of 2 ppm in air, there are currently no data about the corresponding internal exposure that would allow for the derivation of a biological limit value. In the present study, we have investigated the absorption of 1,3-DCB and urinary kinetics of its metabolites in 10 human volunteers after controlled inhalative exposure. Due to the strong odour of 1,3-DCB, a subjective evaluation of odour nuisance was also performed. Ten male human volunteers (23-36 yrs.) were exposed 6 h/day to a concentration of 0.7 ppm and 1.5 ppm in the Aachen workplace simulation laboratory (AWSL) with one week between each experiment. In order to investigate potential dermal absorption, the volunteers were exposed to 1.5 ppm wearing a suitable filter mask that prevented inhalative exposure in a third exposure. 1,3-DCB in blood was measured after 3 and 6 h exposure and the urinary metabolites 3,5-dichlorocatechol (3,5-DCC), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and 3,5-dichlorophenol (3,5-DCP) were measured over 24 h after exposure via LC/MS/MS. There were clear dose-response relations for all investigated parameters. The maximum excretion of the metabolites was reached at the end of exposure and corresponded to 5.2 ± 0.7 mg/g crea, 1.5 ± 0.35 mg/g crea and 0.07 ± 0.011 mg/g crea at 0.7 ppm and to 12.0 ± 3 mg/g crea, 3.5 ± 1.1 mg/g crea and 0.17 ± 0.05 mg/g crea at 1.5 ppm for 3,5-DCC, 2,4-DCP and 3,5-DCP, respectively. The use of filter masks decreased the internal exposure for about 85-90%, indicating substantial dermal absorption. Odour perception did not show a dose-response, probably due to fast olfactory adaption. The human study presented here provides an excellent basis for deriving a biological limit value for 1,3-DCB.

Ultrasmall Manganese Ferrites for In Vivo Catalase Mimicking Activity and Multimodal Bioimaging

Manganese ferrite nanoparticles display interesting features in bioimaging and catalytic therapies. They have been recently used in theranostics as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and as catalase-mimicking nanozymes for hypoxia alleviation. These promising applications encourage the development of novel synthetic procedures to enhance the bioimaging and catalytic properties of these nanomaterials simultaneously. Herein, a cost-efficient synthetic microwave method is developed to manufacture ultrasmall manganese ferrite nanoparticles as advanced multimodal contrast agents in MRI and positron emission tomography (PET), and improved nanozymes. Such a synthetic method allows doping ferrites with Mn in a wide stoichiometric range (Mn_x Fe_3-x O₄ , 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 2.4), affording a library of nanoparticles with different magnetic relaxivities and catalytic properties. These tuned magnetic properties give rise to either positive or dual-mode MRI contrast agents. On the other hand, higher levels of Mn doping enhance the catalytic efficiency of the resulting nanozymes. Finally, through their intracellular catalase-mimicking activity, these ultrasmall manganese ferrite nanoparticles induce an unprecedented tumor growth inhibition in a breast cancer murine model. All of these results show the robust characteristics of these nanoparticles for nanobiotechnological applications.

Boosting the Photoluminescent Properties of Protein-Stabilized Gold Nanoclusters through Protein Engineering

This work reports on the use of protein engineering as a versatile tool to rationally design metal-binding proteins for the synthesis of highly photoluminescent protein-stabilized gold nanoclusters (Prot-AuNCs). The use of a single repeat protein scaffold allowed the incorporation of a set of designed metal-binding sites to understand the effect of the metal-coordinating residues and the protein environment on the photoluminescent (PL) properties of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The resulting Prot-AuNCs, synthesized by two sustainable procedures, showed size-tunable color emission and outstanding PL properties. In a second stage, tryptophan (Trp) residues were introduced at specific positions to provide an electron-rich protein environment and favor energy transfer from Trps to AuNCs. This modification resulted in improved PL properties relevant for future applications in sensing, biological labeling, catalysis, and optics.

Antibody-Directed Synthesis of Catalytic Nanoclusters for Bioanalytical Assays

Synthesis of atomic nanoclusters (NCs) using proteins as a scaffold has attracted great attention. Usually, the synthetic conditions for the synthesis of NCs stabilized with proteins require extreme pH values or temperature. These harsh reaction conditions cause the denaturation of the proteins and end up in the loss of their biological functions. Until now, there are no examples of the use of antibodies as NC stabilizers. In this work, we present the first method for the synthesis of catalytic NCs that uses antibodies for the stabilization of NCs. Anti-BSA IgG was used as a model to demonstrate that it is possible to use an antibody as a scaffold for the synthesis of semiconductor and metallic NCs with catalytic properties. The synthesis of antibodies modified with NCs is carried out under nondenaturing conditions, which do not affect the antibody structure. The resulting antibodies still maintain the affinity for target antigens and protein G. The catalytic properties of the anti-BSA IgG modified with NCs can be used to the quantification of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in a direct sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Polymer-based ammonium-limited fed-batch cultivation in shake flasks improves lipid productivity of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris

The aim of this work was to study ammonium-limited fed-batch conditions in heterotrophic C. vulgaris shake flask cultivations. Therefore, an innovative polymer-based ammonium release technique (polymer beads) was developed. Using these beads in shake flasks, C. vulgaris cultivations resulted in simultaneous growth and lipid accumulation. Lipid productivity was increased by 43% compared to batch cultivations. Furthermore, by online monitoring of the metabolic activity (RAMOS technique), unlimited growth and depletion of nutrients could be identified. A previously unknown sulfur limitation was detected in the applied Bold's Basal Medium. Combining the ammonium release beads with the RAMOS technique proved to be an efficient method for microalgae process development.

[Necrotizing esophagitis by stress-cardiomyopathy with right ventricular insufficiency]

Acute necrotizing esophagitis ("black esophagus") is defined as complete necrosis of the esophageal mucosa, which typically affects the entire circumference. We report a case of a healthy 62-year-old woman, who became hemodynamically unstable due to stress cardiomyopathy with acute right heart failure. Transfusion-dependent anemia occurred 24 h later and an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a black discoloured mucosa of the distal esophagus. After hemodynamic stabilization and treatment with proton pump inhibitors and sucralfate, complete healing of the esophageal mucosa was achieved.

Light-induced cross-linking and post-cross-linking modification of polyglycidol

The photoinduced radical generation process has received renewed interest due to its economic and ecological appeal. Herein the light-induced cross-linking of functional polyglycidol and its post-cross-linking modification are presented. Linear polyglycidol was first functionalized with a tertiary amine in a two-step reaction. Dimethylaminopropyl functional polyglycidol was cross-linked in a UV-light mediated reaction with camphorquinone as a type II photoinitiator. The cross-linked polyglycidol was further functionalized by quaternization with various organoiodine compounds. Aqueous dispersions of the cross-linked polymers were investigated by means of DLS and zeta potential measurements. Polymer films were evaluated by DSC and XPS.

Specific bioanalytical optical and photoelectrochemical assays for detection of methanol in alcoholic beverages

Methanol is a poison which is frequently discovered in alcoholic beverages. Innovative methods to detect methanol in alcoholic beverages are being constantly developed. We report for the first time a new strategy for the detection of methanol using fluorescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis. The analytical system is based on the oxidation of cysteine (CSH) with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) enzymatically generated by alcohol oxidase (AOx). H₂O₂ oxidizes capping agent CSH, modulating the growth of CSH-stabilized cadmium sulphide quantum dots (CdS QDs). Disposable screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) modified with a conductive osmium polymer (Os-PVP) complex were employed to quantify resulting CdS QDs. This polymer facilitates the "wiring" of in situ enzymatically generated CdS QDs, which photocatalyze oxidation of 1-thioglycerol (TG), generating photocurrent as the readout signal. Likewise, we proved that our systems did not suffer from interference by ethanol. The PEC assays showed better sensitivity than conventional methods, covering a wide range of potential applications for methanol quantification.

Heuristics for precise supramolecular control of soft matter structure and properties - 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulfonates with alkaline and organic cations

Comprehensive analysis of the structure and phase behavior for a number of 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulfonates with alkali metal and organic focal groups revealed that the shape of the mesogenic group plays a decisive role in phase behavior of the material. Cubic and layered types of packing prevail when the size of the cation is small and, thus, the shape of the mesogenic molecule is close to conic one. With increasing cation size, the shape becomes more tapered, and columnar mesophases appear to be more stable. Interactions of the focal groups however determine the stability of mesophases. Comparatively strong interactions may, morever, provide substantial deviations from a phase diagram plotting the transition temperatures versus the radius of focal group, as in the case of pyridinium 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulfonate.

Fermi energy dependence of the optical emission in core/shell InAs nanowire homostructures

InAs nanowires grown by vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method are investigated by photoluminescence. We observe that the Fermi energy of all samples is reduced by ∼20 meV when the size of the Au nanoparticle used for catalysis is increased from 5 to 20 nm. Additional capping with a thin InP shell enhances the optical emission and does not affect the Fermi energy. The unexpected behavior of the Fermi energy is attributed to the differences in the residual donor (likely carbon) incorporation in the axial (low) and lateral (high incorporation) growth in the VLS and vapor-solid (VS) methods, respectively. The different impurity incorporation rate in these two regions leads to a core/shell InAs homostructure. In this case, the minority carriers (holes) diffuse to the core due to the built-in electric field created by the radial impurity distribution. As a result, the optical emission is dominated by the core region rather than by the more heavily doped InAs shell. Thus, the photoluminescence spectra and the Fermi energy become sensitive to the core diameter. These results are corroborated by a theoretical model using a self-consistent method to calculate the radial carrier distribution and Fermi energy for distinct diameters of Au nanoparticles.

Plasmonic modulator with >170 GHz bandwidth demonstrated at 100 GBd NRZ

We demonstrate a plasmonic Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator with a flat frequency response exceeding 170 GHz. The modulator comprises two phase modulators exploiting the Pockels effect of an organic electro-optic material in plasmonic slot waveguides. We further show modulation at 100 GBd NRZ and 60 GBd PAM-4. The electrical drive signals were generated using a 100 GSa/s digital to analog converter (DAC). The high-speed and small-scale devices are relevant for next-generation optical interconnects.

Humidity-induced formation of water channels in supramolecular assemblies of wedge-shaped amphiphiles: the effect of the molecular architecture on the channel topology

Microbead QD-ELISA: Microbead ELISA Using Biocatalytic Formation of Quantum Dots for Ultra High Sensitive Optical and Electrochemical Detection

Electrochemical detection strategies employing semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) open up new opportunities for highly sensitive detection of biological targets. We designed a new assay based on microbead linked enzymatic generation of CdS QDs (Microbead QD-ELISA) and employed it in optical and electrochemical affinity assays for the cancer biomarker superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). Biotinylated antibodies against SOD2 were immobilized on the surface of polyvinyl chloride microbeads bearing streptavidin. In order to prevent any non-specific adsorption the microbeads were further blocked with bovine serum albumin. The analyte, SOD2 was captured on microbeads and labeled with alkaline phosphatase-conjugated antibody linked with mouse antibody against SOD2. Hydrolysis of para-nitrophenylphosphate by immobilized alkaline phosphatase triggered the rapid formation of phosphate-stabilized CdS QDs on the surface of microbeads. The resulting semiconductor nanoparticles were detected by fluorescence spectroscopy, microscopy, and square-wave voltammetry (SWV). The electrochemical assay based on the detection with square-wave voltammograms of Cd²⁺ ions originating from immobilized CdS QDs showed linearity up to 45 ng mL^-1, and the limit of SOD2 detection equal to 0.44 ng mL^-1 (1.96 × 10^-11 M). This detection limit is lower by 2 orders of magnitude in comparison with that of other previously published assays for superoxide dismutase. The electrochemical assay was validated with HepG2 (Human hepatocellular carcinoma) cell lysate containing SOD2.

Adjustment of regional climate model output for modeling the climatic mass balance of all glaciers on Svalbard

Large-scale modeling of glacier mass balance relies often on the output from regional climate models (RCMs). However, the limited accuracy and spatial resolution of RCM output pose limitations on mass balance simulations at subregional or local scales. Moreover, RCM output is still rarely available over larger regions or for longer time periods. This study evaluates the extent to which it is possible to derive reliable region-wide glacier mass balance estimates, using coarse resolution (10 km) RCM output for model forcing. Our data cover the entire Svalbard archipelago over one decade. To calculate mass balance, we use an index-based model. Model parameters are not calibrated, but the RCM air temperature and precipitation fields are adjusted using in situ mass balance measurements as reference. We compare two different calibration methods: root mean square error minimization and regression optimization. The obtained air temperature shifts (+1.43°C versus +2.22°C) and precipitation scaling factors (1.23 versus 1.86) differ considerably between the two methods, which we attribute to inhomogeneities in the spatiotemporal distribution of the reference data. Our modeling suggests a mean annual climatic mass balance of -0.05 ± 0.40 m w.e. a^-1 for Svalbard over 2000-2011 and a mean equilibrium line altitude of 452 ± 200 m  above sea level. We find that the limited spatial resolution of the RCM forcing with respect to real surface topography and the usage of spatially homogeneous RCM output adjustments and mass balance model parameters are responsible for much of the modeling uncertainty. Sensitivity of the results to model parameter uncertainty is comparably small and of minor importance.

Indications for Three Independent Domestication Events for the Tea Plant (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) and New Insights into the Origin of Tea Germplasm in China and India Revealed by Nuclear Microsatellites

Background

Tea is the world’s most popular non-alcoholic beverage. China and India are known to be the largest tea producing countries and recognized as the centers for the domestication of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze). However, molecular studies on the origin, domestication and relationships of the main teas, China type, Assam type and Cambod type are lacking.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Twenty-three nuclear microsatellite markers were used to investigate the genetic diversity, relatedness, and domestication history of cultivated tea in both China and India. Based on a total of 392 samples, high levels of genetic diversity were observed for all tea types in both countries. The cultivars clustered into three distinct genetic groups (i.e. China tea, Chinese Assam tea and Indian Assam tea) based on STRUCTURE, PCoA and UPGMA analyses with significant pairwise genetic differentiation, corresponding well with their geographical distribution. A high proportion (30%) of the studied tea samples were shown to possess genetic admixtures of different tea types suggesting a hybrid origin for these samples, including the Cambod type.

Conclusions

We demonstrate that Chinese Assam tea is a distinct genetic lineage from Indian Assam tea, and that China tea sampled from India was likely introduced from China directly. Our results further indicate that China type tea, Chinese Assam type tea and Indian Assam type tea are likely the result of three independent domestication events from three separate regions across China and India. Our findings have important implications for the conservation of genetic stocks, as well as future breeding programs.

Interfacial Reaction-Driven Formation of Silica Carbonate Biomorphs with Subcellular Topographical Features and Their Biological Activity

We report the interfacial reaction-driven formation of micro/nanostructured strontium carbonate (SrCO3) biomorphs with subcellular topographical features on strontium zinc silicate (Sr2ZnSi2O7) biomedical coatings and explore their potential use in bone tissue engineering. The resulting SrCO3 crystals build a well-integrated scaffold surface that not only prevents burst release of ions from the coating but also presents nanotopographical features similar to cellular filopodia. The surface with biomorphic crystals enhances osteoblast adhesion, upregulates the alkaline phosphatase activity, and increases collagen production, highlighting the potential of the silica carbonate biomorphs for tissue regeneration.

High-Content Imaging and Gene Expression Approaches To Unravel the Effect of Surface Functionality on Cellular Interactions of Silver Nanoparticles

The toxic effects of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) remain an issue of debate, where the respective contribution of the NPs themselves and of free Ag(+) ions present in the NP stock suspensions and after intracellular NP corrosion are not fully understood. Here, we employ a recently set up methodology based on high-content (HC) imaging combined with high-content gene expression studies to examine the interaction of three types of Ag NPs with identical core sizes, but coated with either mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA), dodecylamine-modified poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PMA), or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-conjugated PMA with two types of cultured cells (primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and murine C17.2 neural progenitor cells). As a control, cells were also exposed to free Ag(+) ions at the same concentration as present in the respective Ag NP stock suspensions. The data reveal clear effects of the NP surface properties on cellular interactions. PEGylation of the NPs significantly reduces their cellular uptake efficiency, whereas MUA-NPs are more prone to agglomeration in complex tissue culture media. PEG-NPs display the lowest levels of toxicity, which is in line with their reduced cell uptake. MUA-NPs display the highest levels of toxicity, caused by autophagy, cell membrane damage, mitochondrial damage, and cytoskeletal deformations. At similar intracellular NP levels, PEG-NPs induce the highest levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), but do not affect the cell cytoskeleton, in contrast to MUA- and PMA-NPs. Gene expression studies support the findings above, defining autophagy and cell membrane damage-related necrosis as main toxicity pathways. Additionally, immunotoxicity, DNA damage responses, and hypoxia-like toxicity were observed for PMA- and especially MUA-NPs. Together, these data reveal that Ag(+) ions do contribute to Ag NP-associated toxicity, particularly upon intracellular degradation. The different surface properties of the NPs however result in distinct toxicity profiles for the three NPs, indicating clear NP-associated effects.

Direct Observation of the Injection Dynamics of a Laser Wakefield Accelerator Using Few-Femtosecond Shadowgraphy

We present few-femtosecond shadowgraphic snapshots taken during the nonlinear evolution of the plasma wave in a laser wakefield accelerator with transverse synchronized few-cycle probe pulses. These snapshots can be directly associated with the electron density distribution within the plasma wave and give quantitative information about its size and shape. Our results show that self-injection of electrons into the first plasma-wave period is induced by a lengthening of the first plasma period. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations support our observations.

Neurodevelopmental Animal Models Reveal the Convergent Role of Neurotransmitter Systems, Inflammation, and Oxidative Stress as Biomarkers of Schizophrenia: Implications for Novel Drug Development

Schizophrenia is a life altering disease with a complex etiology and pathophysiology, and although antipsychotics are valuable in treating the disorder, certain symptoms and/or sufferers remain resistant to treatment. Our poor understanding of the underlying neuropathological mechanisms of schizophrenia hinders the discovery and development of improved pharmacological treatment, so that filling these gaps is of utmost importance for an improved outcome. A vast amount of clinical data has strongly implicated the role of inflammation and oxidative insults in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Preclinical studies using animal models are fundamental in our understanding of disease development and pathology as well as the discovery and development of novel treatment options. In particular, social isolation rearing (SIR) and pre- or postnatal inflammation (PPNI) have shown great promise in mimicking the biobehavioral manifestations of schizophrenia. Furthermore, the "dual-hit" hypothesis of schizophrenia states that a first adverse event such as genetic predisposition or a prenatal insult renders an individual susceptible to develop the disease, while a second insult (e.g., postnatal inflammation, environmental adversity, or drug abuse) may be necessary to precipitate the full-blown syndrome. Animal models that emphasize the "dual-hit" hypothesis therefore provide valuable insight into understanding disease progression. In this Review, we will discuss SIR, PPNI, as well as possible "dual-hit" animal models within the context of the redox-immune-inflammatory hypothesis of schizophrenia, correlating such changes with the recognized monoamine and behavioral alterations of schizophrenia. Finally, based on these models, we will review new therapeutic options, especially those targeting immune-inflammatory and redox pathways.

Accurate determination of absolute carrier-envelope phase dependence using photo-ionization

The carrier-envelope phase (CEP) dependence of few-cycle above-threshold ionization (ATI) of Xe is calibrated for use as a reference measurement for determining and controlling the absolute CEP in other interactions. This is achieved by referencing the CEP-dependent ATI measurements of Xe to measurements of atomic H, which are in turn referenced to ab initio calculations for atomic H. This allows for the accurate determination of the absolute CEP dependence of Xe ATI, which enables relatively easy determination of the offset between the relative CEP measured and/or controlled by typical devices and the absolute CEP in the interaction.

Blending of reactive prepolymers to control the morphology and polarity of polyglycidol based microgels

The compartmentalization of microgels is a challenging task for synthetic polymer chemistry. Although the complexation with low molecular weight compounds or the use of microfluidic techniques offer attractive possibilities for other length scales, it is difficult to implement compartments in the mesoscale range of 10-100 nm. Herein we show how simple blending of reactive prepolymers is suitable to design new microgel morphologies with tailored compartments. We use poly(EEGE)-block-poly(AGE) as crosslinkable, pro-hydrophilic prepolymer in blends with varying amounts of crosslinkable, yet hydrophobic poly(THF-stat-AllylEHO) or inert and hydrophobic polystyrene, and crosslink the allyl functional prepolymer(s) in a thiol-ene click-type reaction after miniemulsification. Our strategy shows how arrested versus free nanophase separation can be used to control easily the morphology and polarity of microgel particles.

Peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme modulated growth of CdS nanocrystalline structures in situ through redox reaction: application to development of genosensors and aptasensors

This work demonstrates the use of the peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme (peroxidase-DNAzyme) as general and inexpensive platform for development of fluorogenic assays that do not require organic fluorophores. The system is based on the affinity interaction between the peroxidase-DNAzyme bearing hairpin sequence and the analyte (DNA or low molecular weight molecule), which changes the folding of the hairpin structure and consequently the activity of peroxidase-DNAzyme. Hence, in the presence of the analyte the peroxidase-DNAzyme structure is disrupted and does not catalyze the aerobic oxidation of l-cysteine to cystine. Thus, l-cysteine is not removed from the system and the fluorescence of the assay increases due to the in situ formation of fluorescent CdS nanocrystals. The capability of the system as a platform for fluorogenic assays was demonstrated through designing model geno- and aptasensor for the detection of a tumor marker DNA and a low molecular weight analyte, adenosine 5'triphosphate (ATP), respectively.

The aim of this study was to make a comparison of the oral health status of students with and without disabilities (Sw/D, Sw/oD) aged 6-18 years from the city of Erfurt.

METHODS

328 students with mental retardation (MR), physical disability (PD) and hearing impairment (HI) were examined according to WHO standard (1997). The control group consisted of 400 age-matched Sw/oD. Data analysis was performed in age groups 6-12 and 13-18 years.

RESULTS

Caries prevalence of 6- to 12-year-old Sw/D (68.7%) was significantly higher than in Sw/oD (57%) (p=0.019).The caries experience of Sw/D was 2.3 dmft/0.5 DMFT and 1.6 dmft/0.4 DMFT of Sw/oD. PD had a lower restorative index than other Sw/D (p ≥ 0.023). There was no difference in caries prevalence and caries experience among 13- to 18-year-old Sw/D (51%; 1.9 DMFT) and Sw/oD (59%; 2.1 DMFT). MR had a lower prevalence of fissure sealants and less sealed teeth (p ≤ 0.042) and their periodontal health was inferior compared to other Sw/D.

CONCLUSION

Intensive preventive measures should be intensified to compensate for oral health inequalities, particularly in MR.

Poly (vinylcaprolactam)-based Microgels to Improve Gloss Properties of Different Natural Fibres

Three different thermo-sensitive microgels obtained by the copolymerisation of vinylcaprolactam) (VCL) and various monomers (vinylimidazole(VIm), acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) and itaconic acid(IA)) are used to coat different fibre surfaces. Two different pHs and two different temperatures, 25°C and 50°C respectively are chosen for the deposition of the microgels. The scanning electron microscopy of the treated fibre shows good distribution of the particles onto the fibres especially at increasing temperatures. The gloss index for the treated fibres has been measured, and showed that it may be controlled for all of the fibres with the treatment parameters (pH and temperature) and the microgel structure.

Deposition of Functionalized Polyethylenimine-Dye onto Cotton and Wool Fibres

Functionalized polyethylenimine–dye (FPEI) is prepared by mixing branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), in which its primary amine groups are modified at different ratios with a quaternary ammonium coupler (QI), and reactive dyestuff (RD) (QI/RD = 0/100, 20/80, 40/60, 60/40 and 80/20 mole/mole %). The deposition of FPEI from an aqueous solution onto the surface of cotton and wool fibres is studied. The adsorption of a charged polymer from an aqueous medium by cotton and wool fibres is investigated at different pH values, and the uptake of colour on fibres is measured by Datacolor and UVVIS spectrophotometers.

The study of the kinetics of adsorption shows that pseudo-first-order kinetics provide the best correlation of the experimental data. The equilibrium data indicate that the deposition process onto both cotton and wool follows the Langmuir isotherm. In terms of colour strength (K/S value) the coated fibres compare well with those dyed with a commercial dyestuff, C.I. Basic Red 51, which suggests that the coating is a good alternative to classical dyeing.

Tailoring mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of flexible niobium carbide nanocomposite thin films

This work shows the potential of hard, elastic and electrically conductive nanocomposite NbC films for nano- and micro- electronics applications.

Scaling laws in critical random Boolean networks with general in- and out-degree distributions

We evaluate analytically and numerically the size of the frozen core and various scaling laws for critical Boolean networks that have a power-law in- and/or out-degree distribution. To this purpose, we generalize an efficient method that has previously been used for conventional random Boolean networks and for networks with power-law in-degree distributions. With this generalization, we can also deal with power-law out-degree distributions. When the power-law exponent is between 2 and 3, the second moment of the distribution diverges with network size, and the scaling exponent of the nonfrozen nodes depends on the degree distribution exponent. Furthermore, the exponent depends also on the dependence of the cutoff of the degree distribution on the system size. Altogether, we obtain an impressive number of different scaling laws depending on the type of cutoff as well as on the exponents of the in- and out-degree distributions. We confirm our scaling arguments and analytical considerations by numerical investigations.

Advantages of bilayered vascular grafts for surgical applicability and tissue regeneration

Nanofibrous scaffolds are part of an intense research effort to design the next generation of vascular grafts. With electrospinning, the production of micro- and nano-fiber-based prostheses is simple and cost effective. An important parameter for tissue regeneration in such scaffolds is pore size. Too small pores will impede cell infiltration, but too large pores can lead to problems such as blood leakage. In this study, bilayered grafts were made by electrospinning a high-porosity graft with a low-porosity layer on either the luminal or the adventitial side. Grafts were characterized in vitro for fiber size, pore size, total porosity, water and blood leakage, mechanical strength, burst pressure and suture retention strength, and were evaluated in vivo in the rat abdominal aorta replacement model for 3 and 12 weeks. In vitro blood leakage through these bilayered grafts was significantly reduced compared with a high-porosity graft. All grafts had an excellent in vivo outcome, with perfect patency and no thrombosis. Cell invasion and neovascularization were significantly reduced in the grafts with a low-porosity layer on the adventitial side, and there was no significant difference between the grafts in endothelialization rate or intimal hyperplasia. By tailoring the microarchitecture of biodegradable vascular prostheses, it is therefore possible to optimize the scaffold for tissue regeneration while preventing blood leakage, and thus facilitating applicability in the clinic.

Optical emission of InAs nanowires

Wurtzite InAs nanowire samples grown by chemical beam epitaxy have been analyzed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. The nanowires exhibit two main optical emission bands at low temperatures. They are attributed to the recombination of carriers in quantum well structures, formed by zincblende-wurtzite alternating layers, and to the donor-acceptor pair. The blue-shift observed in the former emission band when the excitation power is increased is in good agreement with the type-II band alignment between the wurtzite and zincblende sections predicted by previous theoretical works. When increasing the temperature and the excitation power successively, an additional band attributed to the band-to-band recombination from wurtzite InAs appears. We estimated a lower bound for the wurtzite band gap energy of approximately 0.46 eV at low temperature.

Reference values for three-dimensional surface cephalometry in children aged 3-6 years

OBJECTIVE

This prospective cross-sectional study design was performed to define reference values for the facial surfaces of 3-6-year-old boys and girls using three-dimensional surface cephalometry.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 2290 standardized three-dimensional facial images from 3 to 6-year-old preschool children were separated by gender and assigned to four age categories. All children were Caucasian and revealed no evidence of dentofacial abnormalities. On each image, 31 cephalometric landmarks were marked, resulting in 35 (19 frontal, six lateral, 10 paired) distances and eight angles. Differences between age groups and genders were calculated and significances detected.

RESULTS

A base table with reference values was compiled, which indicated that boys showed higher values than age-matched girls and that measured distances increased with age.

CONCLUSION

The mean values from this study could be compiled as a reference table for three-dimensional facial analysis in Caucasian children aged 3-6 years. Such a reference table could be used in comparative studies with other populations or children with craniofacial malformations.

Comparative analysis of a putative tuberculosis-susceptibility gene, MC3R, and pseudogene sequences in cattle, African buffalo, hyena, rhinoceros and other African bovids and ruminants

Studies in humans have suggested the possible involvement of melanocortin-3-receptor (MC3R) and other components of the central melanocortin system in host defense against mycobacteria. We report a genomic DNA nucleotide sequence highly homologous to human MC3R in several bovids and non-bovid African wildlife species. Nucleotide sequence analysis indicates that the orthologous genes of cattle and buffalo are highly homologous (89.4 and 90%, respectively) to the human MC3R gene. Sequence results also identified a typical non-functional, duplicated pseudogene, MC3RP, in 7 species from the family Bovidae. No pseudogene was found in animals outside Bovidae. The presence of the pseudogene in tuberculosis-susceptible species could have possible immunomodulatory effects on susceptibility to bovine tuberculosis infection, as well as a considerable influence on energy metabolism and food conversion efficiency.

Acoustically driven photon antibunching in nanowires

The oscillating piezoelectric field of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) is employed to transport photoexcited carriers, as well as to spatially control exciton recombination in GaAs-based nanowires (NWs) on a subns time scale. The experiments are carried out in core-shell NWs transferred to a SAW delay line on a LiNbO(3) crystal. Carriers generated in the NW by a focused laser spot are acoustically transferred to a second location, leading to the remote emission of subns light pulses synchronized with the SAW phase. The dynamics of the carrier transport, investigated using spatially and time-resolved photoluminescence, is well-reproduced by computer simulations. The high-frequency contactless manipulation of carriers by SAWs opens new perspectives for applications of NWs in opto-electronic devices operating at gigahertz frequencies. The potential of this approach is demonstrated by the realization of a high-frequency source of antibunched photons based on the acoustic transport of electrons and holes in (In,Ga)As NWs.
