Grambank reveals the importance of genealogical constraints on linguistic diversity and highlights the impact of language loss

While global patterns of human genetic diversity are increasingly well characterized, the diversity of human languages remains less systematically described. Here, we outline the Grambank database. With over 400,000 data points and 2400 languages, Grambank is the largest comparative grammatical database available. The comprehensiveness of Grambank allows us to quantify the relative effects of genealogical inheritance and geographic proximity on the structural diversity of the world's languages, evaluate constraints on linguistic diversity, and identify the world's most unusual languages. An analysis of the consequences of language loss reveals that the reduction in diversity will be strikingly uneven across the major linguistic regions of the world. Without sustained efforts to document and revitalize endangered languages, our linguistic window into human history, cognition, and culture will be seriously fragmented.

Cell-surface properties of Vibrio ordalii strains isolated from Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in Chilean farms

Vibrio ordalii is the causative agent of atypical vibriosis and has the potential to cause severe losses in salmonid aquaculture, but the factors determining its virulence have not yet been elucidated. In this work, cell-surface-related properties of the isolates responsible for outbreaks in Atlantic salmon were investigated. We also briefly examined whether pathogenicity against fish varied for V. ordalii strains with differing cell-surface properties. Hydrocarbon adhesions indicated the hydrophobic character of V. ordalii, although only 4 of 18 isolates induced haemagglutination in Atlantic salmon erythrocytes. A minority of the studied isolates (6 of 18) and the type strain ATCC 33509T produced low-grade biofilm formation on polyethylene surface after 2 h post-inoculation (hpi), but no strains were slime producers. Interestingly, V. ordalii isolates showed wide differences in hydrophobicity. Therefore, we chose 3 V. ordalii isolates (Vo-LM-03, Vo-LM-18 and Vo-LM-16) as representative of each hydrophobicity group (strongly hydrophobic, relatively hydrophobic and quasi-hydrophilic, respectively) and ATCC 33509T was used in the pathogenicity studies. All tested V. ordalii strains except the type strain resisted the killing activity of Atlantic salmon mucus and serum, and could proliferate in these components. Moreover, all V. ordalii isolates adhered to SHK-1 cells, causing damage to fish cell membrane permeability after 16 hpi. Virulence testing using rainbow trout revealed that isolate Vo-LM-18 was more virulent than isolates Vo-LM-03 and Vo-LM-16, indicating some relationship between haemagglutination and virulence, but not with hydrophobicity.

Laryngeal mask for difficult intubation in children

We present a new intubation technique using an oral preformed tracheal tube passed through a laryngeal mask. Six patients (neonate to six months old) with craniofacial malformations of head and neck and scheduled for reconstructive plastic surgery are the basis of this report. An inhalation induction with increasing doses of halothane in oxygen while maintaining spontaneous ventilation was performed. Once an adequate anaesthetic depth was achieved, a direct laryngoscopy was performed. The epiglottis could not be seen in any of the patients. Anaesthesia was deepened in order to insert the laryngeal mask, size 1 or 2, with an oral preformed 3.5 or 4.0 tracheal tube inside it. Correct position of the mask was confirmed by capnography. The preformed tracheal tube was then advanced 1-2 cm. and its position in the trachea verified. The 15 mm connector was then removed, and an adult intubating stylet was attached to the end of the tracheal tube. The laryngeal mask was removed, holding the stylet and tube in place. Once the mask was removed, the stylet was disconnected, and the 15 mm connector reattached. Our experience was that this takes about 20 to 30 s. We recommended this technique in paediatric patients in which a difficult intubation is foreseen.

Dorsomedial thalamotomy as a treatment for terminal anorexia: a report of two cases

Anorexia nervosa has been considered a compulsive obsessive disorder (OCDS). We present a case report of two patients, male and female, suffering from an extremely severe, chronic and refractory anorectic syndrome. Both patients underwent bilateral stereotactic thalamotomy with involvement of the lamella medialis. Follow-up was 4 year and 2 year, respectively. Both patients have regained weight and improved significantly in terms of their obsessive-compulsive symptoms and in their quality of life. The results suggest that anorexia nervosa may be considered in the OCDS.

Frequency of word occurrence in communication samples produced by adult communication aid users

Communication samples generated by five nonspeaking adults using Canon Communicators were collected for 14 consecutive days. Samples were analyzed to determine frequency of word occurrence. A core vocabulary of the 500 most frequently occurring words was analyzed further to determine spelling level and proportion of complete communication samples represented by subsets of the core vocabulary list. The 500 core vocabulary words represented 80% of the total words in the combined communication samples for the 5 subjects. Of all messages generated by the subjects, 33% could be communicated in their entirety using words from the core vocabulary list. The communication of the remaining messages required one or more words in addition to the core vocabulary. The spelling grade level of the words in the core vocabulary list did not exceed the seventh grade. The implications of the results for designing and customizing communication aids and for potential user training are discussed.

Microcomputer-based communication augmentation systems for two nonspeaking, physically handicapped persons with severe visual impairment

Two different microcomputer-based communication systems were developed for nonspeaking physically handicapped individuals with severe visual impairment. One subject was 24 years old and had an inoperative optic glioma which impaired motor function as well as vision. The second subject was cortically blind with severe motor limitation secondary to an automobile accident which occurred at 17 years of age. Both communication systems employed speech synthesis as a control feature to compensate for visual impairment. Both subjects have learned to use their communication systems. The second subject has not achieved extended, independent system use due to reduced vigilance and attention span.
