The Use of Liquid Latex to Recover Latent Fingerprints that are Covered in Debris from Exterior Glass Surfaces of Vehicles

The purpose of this research is to determine if latent fingerprints deposited on the exterior glass surfaces of vehicles, then covered in debris, can be recovered. Past research used liquid latex to lift soot to recover trace evidence. Recently, liquid latex has been used to recover latent fingerprints along the bottom of vehicles. In this study, a total of 216 latent fingerprints were deposited on the exterior windows of three vehicles. Three control and three experimental latent fingerprints were placed on each side window. The vehicles collected debris for either 2, 3, or 4 weeks. After debris collection, liquid latex was applied to the experimental sections. The underlying fingerprints were developed with white granular powder. Control fingerprints were developed directly with white granular powder. A chi-square test revealed a significant difference in fingerprint recovery between the control and liquid latex method (X²  = 9.026, d.f. = 1, p = 0.003). An odds ratio determined that the control method increases the probability of latent fingerprint recovery by 2.68. Fisher's exact test indicated that there is no statistically significant difference between the detail of the recovered control and experimental fingerprints (p = 0.065). This study demonstrates that recovery of fingerprints is possible using the liquid latex method; however, the control method recovers more fingerprints on the glass exterior of vehicles. If latent fingerprints are thought to be present on the exterior glass surfaces of vehicles, the control method should be used to improve vehicle processing by investigators.

Enhanced Single-tube Multiplex PCR Assay for Detection and Identification of Six Arcobacter Species

AIM

A single-tube multiplex PCR (mPCR) assay was developed for rapid, sensitive and simultaneous detection and identification of six Arcobacter species including two new species, A. lanthieri and A. faecis, along with A. butzleri, A. cibarius, A. cryaerophilus and A. skirrowii on the basis of differences in the lengths of their PCR products. Previously designed monoplex, mPCR and RFLP assays do not detect or differentiate A. faecis and A. lanthieri from other closely related known Arcobacter spp.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Primer pairs for each target species (except A. skirrowii) and mPCR protocol were newly designed and optimized using variable regions of housekeeping including cpn60, gyrA, gyrB and rpoB genes. The accuracy and specificity of the mPCR assay was assessed using DNA templates from six targets and 11 other Arcobacter spp. as well as 50 other bacterial reference species and strains. Tests on the DNA templates of target Arcobacter spp. were appropriately identified, whereas all 61 other DNA templates from other bacterial species and strains were not amplified. Sensitivity and specificity of the mPCR assay was 10 pg μl^-1 of DNA concentration per target species. The optimized assay was further evaluated, validated and compared with other mPCR assays by testing Arcobacter cultures isolated from various faecal and water sources.

CONCLUSIONS

Study results confirm that the newly developed mPCR assay is rapid, accurate, reliable, simple, and valuable for the simultaneous detection and routine diagnosis of six human- and animal-associated Arcobacter spp.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

The new mPCR assay is useful not only for pure but also mixed cultures. Moreover, it has the ability to rapidly detect six species which enhances the value of this technology for aetiological and epidemiological studies.

A model for an integrated emergency medicine/trauma service

OBJECTIVE

To describe a model for an integrated multidisciplinary trauma service and to compare survival outcomes for patients resuscitated by either emergency medicine (EM) or surgical housestaff assigned to the trauma service.

METHODS

A prospective observational study was performed using injured patients evaluated in the trauma room at Hartford Hospital from July 1 through December 31, 1995. Inclusion criteria included an ICD-9-CM code of 800 through 959.9 and any of the following: transfer from another hospital, admission to the intensive care unit, hospitalization for > or = 23 hours, survival probability of < or = 90%, or Abbreviated Injury Score of > or = 3. Patients were excluded for burns necessitating transfer to a burn unit for definitive care, and for missing data elements that prevented a patient from being analyzed by the TRISS method. Data elements included mechanism of injury, Injury Severity Score, Revised Trauma Score, probability of survival, age, gender, and whether an EM resident was team leader. Patients in the EM cohort (group 1) were compared with patients for whom a surgical resident was team leader (group 2) for all data elements and for hospital survival. TRISS analysis was performed to evaluate outcomes in comparison with national norms.

RESULTS

After exclusions, 609 patients were left for analysis. There were 141 (30%) resuscitated with an EM resident as team leader. No significant difference was found for matched variables between the groups. Both groups had good comparability with the Major Trauma Outcome Study (MTOS) database baseline, with M scores of 0.949 and 0.942, respectively. Outcomes for both groups also compared favorably with the MTOS norm for survival, with Z scores of 2.38 and 2.35 for groups 1 and 2.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that in this model of integrated EM/trauma service, equivalent survival outcomes occur whether EM or surgery housestaff act as team leaders.

Future horizons for the victims of trauma

The prevention of injuries and the future treatment of trauma victims are exciting and uncertain prospects. Continuous advances in the development of inclusive trauma care systems, technical surgical achievements, and patient-centered redesign are important factors to consider. The integration of effort will be a recurrent theme in injury prevention and trauma care.

False allegations of sexual misconduct: clinical and institutional considerations

That some therapists engage in sexual misconduct with patients has been unequivocally established. In recent years, however, some patients' allegations of sexual misconduct have been determined to be false. This paper describes four cases in which hospitalized psychiatric patients made false allegations. Such allegations may result from patients' seeking to gain monetarily or in other ways or from a desire for retaliation or revenge against a clinician who they believe has scorned, abandoned, or otherwise mistreated them. In other cases, especially among patients with a history of severe trauma, a patient's psychopathology may be inadvertently stimulated by diagnostic, treatment, or milieu activities. The authors recommend specific institutional responses to allegations of sexual misconduct, such as forming a clinical investigative team, conducting a physical examination, and reporting the charge to outside agencies or investigators when appropriate. Because false claims can have disastrous effects on all involved, clinicians should understand the presentations of such claims and the motivations behind them, and institutions should carefully develop a set of procedures for responding to them.
