Influence of Restoration Thickness and Resin Cement on Translucency and Color of Different Types of Monolithic Zirconia and Lithium Disilicate Ceramic

In recent years, high esthetic expectations and natural appearance demands from patients have increased the popularity of ceramic restorations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of restoration thicknesses and different resin cement brands on the translucency and final color of different types of monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramics. A total of 160 disc-shaped specimens (10-mm diameter; 1 mm, or 1.5 mm thick) were produced using different types of monolithic zirconia (Katana Zirconia UTML, Katana Zirconia ML, Katana Zirconia STML Blocks; Kuraray) and lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar Vivadent) (n = 40 discs per material, with 20 discs per thickness). Two different brands of dual-cured resin cements (RelyX Ultimate, 3M ESPE; and BisCem, Bisco) were applied to the specimen surfaces. The translucency and color changes of the lithium disilicate and monolithic zirconia ceramics were examined before and after cementation using a spectrophotometer. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the resin cement brand and ceramic thickness variation influenced the translucency and final color of the monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramic specimens.

Influence of fiber insertion and different material type on stress distribution in endocrown restorations: a 3D-FEA study

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of fibers insertion and restorative material type on the stress distribution in endocrowns with finite element analysis. Five 3D models of first mandibular molars were created and restored as follows: (1) IN: intact tooth, (2) IPS-E: tooth restored with lithium disilicat ceramic endocrowns, (3) C-E: tooth restored with composite endocrowns, (4) IPS-E + F: lithium disilicate ceramic endocrowns + fiber, (5) C-E + F: composite endocrowns + fiber. Vertical masticatory load was imitated with finite element analysis. The equivalent stress of von Mises failure criterion (mvM) was calculated. The maximum mvM stress, enamel/crown, dentin and cement were compared among models and strength of the materials. Endocrowns presented a lower mvM stress level than intact tooth. In IPS-E, the mvM stress values in the crown and dentin were higher than C-E, while the mvM stress values in cement were higher in C-E group. Fibers insertion did not affect the stress level of IPS-E and C-E groups. In IPS model, fiber showed more stress absorption than C-E. The restorative material type changed the stress distribution of endocrown restorations. The fiber application did not affect the stress distribution in either endocrown group. But, more stress absorption was observed in fiber under IPS-E than C-E.

Custom and prefabricated PolyEtherKetoneKetone (PEKK) post-core systems bond strength: Scanning electron microscopy evaluation

The present study evaluated the bond strengths of prefabricated PolyEtherKetoneKetone (PEKK) posts, PEKK posts custom-configured according to root-canal size, and conventional fiber posts. A total of 30 maxillary incisors were randomly divided into three groups, as follows: Group 1: fiber posts; Group 2: prefabricated PEKK posts; Group 3; custom-made PEKK posts. Following endodontic treatment, post spaces were prepared, and posts were cemented with resin cement. Push-out bond strength testing was performed using a universal testing machine, and fractures modes were examined under a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD tests, with the level of significance set at .05. The highest bond-strength values in the cervical section were observed with the custom-made PEKK post (17.3470 MPa), whereas the highest bond-strength values in the middle and apical sections were observed with the conventional fiber posts (11.5375 MPa and 6.8625 MPa, respectively). Bond-strength values for all posts systems decreased in a cervical to apical direction. PEKK posts are a suitable alternative to fiber posts. Although custom-made PEKK posts demonstrated better bond strength than prefabricated PEKK posts, further studies are needed to evaluate their clinical performance.

Comparison of retention forces with various fabrication methods and materials in double crowns

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to analyze the retention force changes and wear behaviours of double-crown systems over long-term use.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Ten groups, each consisting of six samples, were evaluated. Specifically, casting gold alloy primary crown - casting gold alloy secondary crown (AA), laser sintering primary crown - laser sintering secondary crown (LL), casting Cr alloy primary crown - casting Cr alloy secondary crown, (CC) zirconia primary crown - electroformed secondary crown (ZA), and CAD/CAM titanium alloy primary crown - CAD/CAM titanium alloy secondary crown (TT) groups were evaluated at cone angles of 4° and 6°. The samples were subjected to 5,000 insertion-separation cycles in artificial saliva, and the retention forces were measured every 500 cycles. The wear levels were analyzed via SEM at the beginning and end of the 5,000 cycles.

RESULTS

In all samples, the retention forces increased when the conus angle decreased. The highest initial and final retention force values were found in the LL-4° group (32.89 N-32.65 N), and the lowest retention force values were found in the ZA6° group (5.41 N-6.27 N). The ZA groups' samples showed the least change in the retention force, and no wear was observed. In the other groups, wear was observed mostly in the primary crowns.

CONCLUSION

More predictable, clinically relevant, and less excursive retention forces can be observed in the ZA groups. The retention force values of the LL groups were statically similar to those of the other groups, except the ZA groups.
