Entomopathogenic fungi with biological control potential against poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae, Arachnida: Dermanyssidae)

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (Arachnida: Dermanyssidae) is a pest that causes significant economic loss in laying hens for which control methods are limited. In this study, the effects of 20 indigenous fungal strains on poultry red mites in chicken farms were investigated. All experiments were conducted under laboratory condition at 28 ± 1 °C and 80 ± 5% humidity. A screening test showed that Metharizium flavoviride strain As-2 and Beauveria bassiana strain Pa4 had the greatest measured effect on D. gallinae at 1 × 107 conidia/ml 7 days after application. In a subsequent does-response experiment, these strains also caused 92.7% mortality at 1 × 109 conidia/ml within the same period. The LC50 of these strains was 5.5 × 104 (95% CI: 0.8-37.5) conidia/ml for As-2 and 3.2 × 104 (95% CI: 0.4-26.0) conidia/ml for Pa4, and their LT50 were 1.94 and 1.57 days, respectively. The commercial Metarhizium anisopliae bioinsecticide Bio-Storm 1.15% WP, used as a comparator, had LC50 and LT50 1 × 105 (95% CI: 0.1-7.9) conidia/ml and 3.03 (95% CI: 2.4-3.8) days, respectively. It is suggested that mycoacaricides could be developed using the best two fungal strains found in this study (As-2 and Pa4), providing potential for biological control of poultry red mites.

Association among CO-RADS score, co-morbid diseases, and short-term prognosis in COVID-19 infection

OBJECTIVE

CO-RADS scoring system is used as a diagnostic tool. However, the data about its association with co-morbid diseases and effectiveness in predicting intensive care need and short-term mortality are lacking. In our study, we aimed to investigate the association among CO-RADS score, co-morbid diseases, intensive care need, and 28-day-mortality.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The study included 665 patients with COVID-19 infection suspicion between 30 May 2020 and 30 October 2020.

RESULTS

The sensitivity of CT was 77%, and specificity was 52%. A higher CT score was associated with the rate of positive PCR test results (p<0.001), and older patients had higher CO-RADS scores than younger patients (p<0.001). Hypertension (OR: 7.956; p=0.005) and diabetes mellitus (OR: 5.902; p=0.015) were associated with significantly higher CO-RADS scores. Most patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) had a CO-RADS score of 5. The CO-RADS score was 4 and above in 115 (89.2%) patients who were transferred to the intensive care unit due to worsening of clinical condition (p<0.001). The 28-day mortality was significantly higher in patients with a CO-RADS score of 4 and above than in patients with a score of 3 and below (97.3% vs. 2.7%) (p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Irrespective of PCR results, a higher CO-RADS score gives us useful information about ICU need or mortality risk and alerts us for early treatment to reduce the risk of further transmission, intensive care need, and mortality particularly in patients with co-morbid diseases.

Photocatalytic degradation of Remazol Red F3B using ZnO catalyst

The photocatalytic degradation of aqueous solution of a commercial azo-reactive textile dye, Remazol Red F3B, has been investigated in a batch slurry reactor, in the presence of ZnO catalyst using two different UV light sources emitting at 254 nm and 365 nm. The effects of various process variables on degradation performance of the process have been investigated. The results showed that decolourization and total organic carbon (TOC) removal are both affected in the same manner by the solution pH in the pH range 6-10, showing maxima at pH 7 and pH 10. They are inversely related to the dye concentration, they increase in power-law with the light intensity. Decolourization is faster with 365 nm UV. TOC removal is not affected by UV wavelength in the initial period up to 20 min, after which it progresses faster under 365 nm UV radiation. These results indicate that the UV wavelength influences especially the degradation rate of the intermediate products generated during the initial period of the photocatalytic process. Finally, catalyst loading affects both efficiencies in the same trend, which are maximized at about 2 g/l catalyst loading.

Acceptability, reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Turkish version of WOMAC osteoarthritis index

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the acceptability, reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Turkish version of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis (OA) index in physiotherapy outpatient practice in Turkey.

METHOD

Data were obtained from 72 patients with OA of the knee. They were asked to answer two disease-specific questionnaires (WOMAC LK 3.1 and Lequesne-Algofunctional Index of Severity for the knee) and one generic instrument (Medical Outcomes study SF-36 Survey-SF-36). Acceptability was assessed in terms of refusal rate, rates of missing responses, and administration time. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Content validity was assessed by examining the floor and ceiling effects, and skew of the distributions. Convergent and divergent validity was assessed by examining the Pearson's correlation coefficients. Responsiveness was determined by examining effect size (ES), standardized response means (SRM) and P values generated using Wilcoxon's test.

RESULTS

The overall response rate was 100%. Alpha values for all WOMAC subscales exceeded the value of 0.70 at both baseline and follow-up assessments. Frequency distributions of scores were symmetrical. Subscales had negligible floor and ceiling effects. Both pain and physical function subscales were fairly correlated with the subscales measuring similar constructs of SF-36, whereas they were weakly correlated with other dimensions of SF-36. A good correlation was obtained between WOMAC total and Lequesne index. The pain and physical function subscales of WOMAC index were the most responsive subscales.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish WOMAC OA index is acceptable, valid, reliable and responsive for use in Turkish patients with knee OA.

Comparison of two different viscosupplements in knee osteoarthritis -- a pilot study

A pilot study was designed to investigate the efficacy of two different hyaluronic acid preparations combined to physical therapy in patients with knee osteoarthritis in terms of reduction in pain and disability and muscle strengthening. Thirty-seven patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knees were randomly assigned into three groups. First group received a lower molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus physical therapy, second group received a higher molecular weight hyaluronic acid plus physical therapy, and the third group received physical therapy alone. The isokinetic knee muscle strengths and index of severity for osteoarthritis of the knee scores were evaluated at baseline, at the end of treatment (3 weeks) and at 3 months of follow up. At both short-term (3 weeks) and long-term (3 months) evaluations, index of severity for osteoarthritis of the knee scores were reduced in all three groups, while there was no significant muscle strengthening.

Effect of ultrasound on the dissolution kinetics of phosphate rock in HNO3

Ultrasound is known to enhance solid/liquid reactions. This paper deals with the investigation of the dissolution of phosphate rock in nitric acid, in the absence and presence of ultrasound. The reaction is first-order with respect to H+ and activation energy equal to 16 kJ/mol in both cases. The effect of ultrasound is on the pre-exponential factor A. An empirical relation is given, which relates rate constant to ultrasound power.

Isokinetic measurement of trunk muscle strength in women with chronic low-back pain

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the relationships among chronic low-back pain and obesity, total spinal range of motion, and trunk muscle strength. The short-term impact of trunk muscle strengthening exercises on this condition was also examined.

DESIGN

A controlled, prospective study of trunk muscle strengths of patients with chronic low-back pain and the short-term impact of exercise on strength. The study group consisted of 25 female patients who had been experiencing low-back pain for at least 3 mo, and the control group included 20 age-matched women without known low-back trouble. The Davenport Index was used to calculate the body mass indexes of all subjects. The Oswestry Disability Questionnaire was used to assess pain in the study group. Full flexion and extension ranges of motion were measured, then isokinetic measurements of trunk muscles were performed at 60-, 120-, and 180-degrees/sec velocities. Isometric measurements were also recorded for both flexors and extensors at a 60-degree angle.

RESULTS

Increased body mass index and decreased trunk muscle strength were found to be directly associated with chronic low-back pain (P < 0.05). After a 15-day standard trunk strengthening exercise program in the patient group, trunk muscle strength was found to be increased (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Obesity and decrease in trunk muscle strength are important factors in chronic low-back pain, and a trunk muscle strengthening program will be helpful in reducing the pain.

Air pollution modelling in Erzurum city

Various techniques have been applied to air pollution modelling. In this study, a model was developed by applying a continuity equation to the air control volume over Erzurum city centre. Model parameters were calculated by regression analysis, using SO2 and particle concentrations taken in 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 winter seasons. Multiple correlation coefficients, R2, for all analyses were of the same order of 97%. According to this model, daily polluting concentrations are not only influenced by daily meterological parameters but also by the values of previous days. The proposed model allows estimation of daily polluting concentrations by means of meteorological data.
