Abstract
(1) Background: There are conflicting results on whether weight loss after bariatric surgery (BS) might be associated with quality of life (QoL)/depressive symptomatology. We aim to determine whether BS outcomes are associated with QoL/depressive symptomatology in studied patients at the 8-year follow-up after BS, as well as their relationship with different serum proteins and miRNAs. (2) Methods: A total of 53 patients with class III obesity who underwent BS, and then classified into "good responders" and "non-responders" depending on the percentage of excess weight lost (%EWL) 8 years after BS (%EWL ≥ 50% and %EWL < 50%, respectively), were included. Basal serum miRNAs and different proteins were analysed, and patients completed tests to evaluate QoL/depressive symptomatology at 8 years after BS. (3) Results: The good responders group showed higher scores on SF-36 scales of physical functioning, role functioning-physical, role functioning-emotional, body pain and global general health compared with the non-responders. The expression of hsa-miR-101-3p, hsa-miR-15a-5p, hsa-miR-29c-3p, hsa-miR-144-3p and hsa-miR-19b-3p were lower in non-responders. Hsa-miR-19b-3p was the variable associated with the response to BS in a logistic regression model. (4) Conclusions: The mental health of patients after BS is limited by the success of the intervention. In addition, the expression of basal serum miRNAs related to depression/anxiety could predict the success of BS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate the clinical and biological factors associated with negative 99mTc-MIBI scanning in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective observational study was designed in 195 patients (mean age: 59.2±13.0years; 77% woman) with PHPT (calcium: 11.3±1.1mg/dl and PTH: 218±295pg/ml) studied in endocrinology setting between 2013 and 2020. An univariate and multivariate analysis was made to evaluate the clinical and biological factors associated with negative 99mTc-MIBI scanning. RESULTS 50 patients (26%) with negative 99mTc-MIBI scanning had lower PTH levels (146±98 vs. 244±334; p<0.001), adenomas with smaller sonographic dimensions (maximum diameter: 1.2±0.4 vs. 1.7±0.9cm; p=0.001 and volume: 0.36±0.43 vs. 1.7±4.1cm3; p<0.001), localized more frequently in upper parathyroid glands (37% vs. 14%; p=0.005) and associated more frequently to thyroid nodules (72% vs. 57%; p=0.045) than patients with positive scanning. 116 patients were operated and parathyroid adenomas were smaller (maximum diameter: 1.3±0.5 vs. 1.9±1.1cm; p=0.008 and volume: 0.30±0.20 vs. 1.2±1.1cm3; p<0.001), less heavy (567±282 vs. 1470±1374mg; p=0.030) and were localized more frequently in upper situation (65% vs. 16%; p<0.001) than patients with positive scanning. In the multivariate analysis an independent association between negative 99mTc-MIBI scanning and size of removed adenoma ≤1cm (OR: 5.77; 95% CI: 1.46-22.71) and upper adenoma localization were observed (OR: 8.05; 95% IC: 2.22-29.16). CONCLUSIONS One in four patients studied for PHPT had a negative 99mTc-MIBI scanning and were independent associated with size of adenoma ≤1cm and upper adenoma localization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to assess the impact of the use of an automated bolus advisor (ABA) on glycemic control, quality of life, and satisfaction in adult patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus treated with multiple daily injections of insulin. MATERIALS AND METHODS A crossover, prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter study of 36 weeks duration was conducted. Patients were randomized to start in either control phase (CP) using a traditional blood glucose meter to calculate insulin doses (Accu-Chek(®) Aviva Nano; Roche Diagnostics, Indianapolis, IN) or intervention phase (IP) using an ABA meter (Accu-Chek Aviva Expert; Roche Diagnostics) and switched to the other phase after a washout period. Each phase was 12 weeks in duration. RESULTS Significant glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) reduction was observed in both phases (CP, initial HbA1c of 8.05 ± 0.7%, final HbA1c of 7.59 ± 0.7% [P < 0.001]; IP, initial HbA1c of 8.13 ± 1%, final HbA1c of 7.61 ± 0.8% [P < 0.001]). Although the trend was to a higher HbA1c reduction in IP, no statistically significant differences were observed between phases (CP, HbA1c -0.39%; IP, HbA1c -0.52% [P = 0.8]). During IP, the number of daily glucose measurements was greater (4.28 ± 1.2 vs. 4.01 ± 1.1 [P < 0.006]), the rate of postprandial hypoglycemia was lower, and an improvement in quality of life and higher satisfaction were observed. CONCLUSIONS In this first crossover study comparing the use of an ABA with the standard usual care, the use of an ABA was effective and well accepted. Furthermore, reduction in hypoglycemic events, improvement in adherence and quality of life, and higher treatment satisfaction were observed.

Abstract
The multiciliated ependyma forms an epithelial-like layer that could act as a selective barrier between the brain parenchyma and cerebrospinal fluid. In the present study, tyrosine hydroxylase-containing fibres have been detected in the basal pole of the ependymal cells of the lateral ventricles of rat, mouse and calf. The use of antibodies against at least two different peptide sequences of each D(2), D(3), D(4) and D(5) dopamine receptor subtype has allowed their detection in: (i) sections of mouse, rat and bovine lateral ventricles, by means of immunocytochemistry; and (ii) membrane protein extracts obtained from the ependymal layer of the bovine lateral ventricles, using immunoblotting. The immunocytochemical study has shown the presence of all these subtypes of dopamine receptors in the ependymal cells. Immunoblotting demonstrated similar immunoreactive bands for all receptor subtypes in both ependymal and corpus striatum membrane extracts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the current state of iodine nutrition in the adult population of Galicia (Spain), which is considered iodine sufficient based on results from studies carried out on schoolchildren. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and its relationship with different socio-demographic variables were assessed. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was carried out on the population aged above 18 years in the Autonomous Community of Galicia (Spain) during 2004. The UICs were determined in an isolated urine sample using Dunn's colorimetric method. Iodine status was based on World Health Organization/International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (WHO/ICCIDD) UIC. MAIN OUTCOME A total of 2877 urine samples were taken. Median UIC for the total Galician population was 75.6 microg/L. About 30% of the population showed a UIC below 50 microg/L. Educational level, place of residence (coast vs. inland), and consumption of iodized salt were independent variables associated with the iodine nutrition of the adult population of Galicia. CONCLUSIONS There is "mild" iodine deficiency (WHO) in the adult population of Galicia, which affects all the groups analyzed and which is particularly significant in the group of women of a fertile age. The data obtained on the state of iodine nutrition in school-age populations cannot be extended to the adult population.

Abstract
Two phases may be recognized in the development of congenital hydrocephalus in the hyh mutant mouse. During embryonic life the detachment of the ventral ependyma is followed by a moderate hydrocephalus. During the first postnatal week the cerebral aqueduct becomes obliterated and a severe hydrocephalus develops. The aim of the present investigation was to elucidate the cellular phenomena occurring at the site of aqueduct obliteration and the probable participation of the subcommissural organ in this process. Electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and lectin histochemistry were used to investigate the aqueduct of normal and hydrocephalic hyh mice from embryonic day 14 (E-14) to postnatal day 7 (PN-7). In the normal hyh mouse, the aqueduct is an irregularly shaped cavity with 3 distinct regions (rostral, middle, and caudal) lined by various types of ependyma. In the hydrocephalic mouse, these 3 regions behave differently; the rostral end becomes stenosed, the middle third dilates, and the caudal end obliterates. The findings indicate that the following sequence of events lead to hydrocephalus: 1) denudation of the ventral ependyma (embryonic life); 2) denudation of dorsal ependyma and failure of the subcommissural organ to form Reissner fiber (first postnatal week); 3) obliteration of distal end of aqueduct; and 4) severe hydrocephalus. No evidence was obtained that NCAM is involved in the detachment of ependymal cells. The process of ependymal denudation would involve alterations of the surface sialoglycoproteins of the ependymal cells and the interaction of the latter with macrophages.

Abstract
Hydrocephalic hyh mice are born with moderate hydrocephalus and a normal cerebral aqueduct. At about the fifth postnatal day the aqueduct becomes obliterated and severe hydrocephalus develops. The aim of the present investigation was to investigate the mechanism of this hydrocephalus, probably starting during fetal life when the cerebral aqueduct is still patent. By use of immunocytochemistry and scanning electron microscopy, mutant (n = 54) and normal (n = 61) hyh mouse embryos were studied at various developmental stages to trace the earliest microscopic changes occurring in the brains of embryos becoming hydrocephalic. The primary defect begins at an early developmental stage (E-12) and involves cells lining the brain cavities, which detach following a well-defined temporo-spatial pattern. This ependymal denudation mostly involves the ependyma of the basal plate derivatives. There is a relationship between ependymal denudation and ependymal differentiation evaluated by the expression of vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein. The ependymal cells had a normal appearance before and after detachment, suggesting that their separation from the ventricular wall might be due to abnormalities in cell adhesion molecules. The process of detachment of the ventral ependyma, clearly visualized under scanning electron microscope, is almost completed before the onset of hydrocephalus. Furthermore, this ependymal denudation does not lead to aqueductal stenosis during prenatal life. Thus, the rather massive ependymal denudation appears to be the trigger of hydrocephalus in this mutant mouse, raising the question about the mechanism responsible for this hydrocephalus. It seems likely that an uncontrolled bulk flow of brain fluid through the extended areas devoid of ependyma may be responsible for the hydrocephalus developed by the hyh mutant embryos. The defect in these embryos also includes loss of the hindbrain floor plate and a delayed in the expression of Reissner fiber glycoproteins by the subcommissural organ.

Abstract
AIM To search in retrospectively and prospectively from the efficacy of biofeedback training in patients with fecal incontinence and to investigate the determinant factors of improvement of the patients. METHODS The incontinent patients were evaluated in phases: I: In 37 subjects, 14 men and 23 women, aged between 13 and 82 years, biofeedback training was done, and the efficacy was determined retrospective form. II: In 14 patients, 2 men and 12 women, aged between 19 and 79 years, biofeedback training was done, and rectal balloon sensitivity, force of contraction and motor/sensitivity index were evaluated in prospective form before and after biofeedback training. RESULTS In the group of the patients studied in phase I, findings were: 21 patients (60%) complete continence, 12 (34%) improvement, and 2 (5.7%) without change. In the group of the patients studied in phase II, findings were: 8 patients (57%) complete continence, 4 (29%) improvement and 2 (14%) without change. In patients with complete continence there was a decrease in rectal balloon sensitivity (P < 0.05) and an increase of the motor/sensitivity index (P < 0.05), before and after biofeedback training. CONCLUSION Biofeedback is a simple, painless and effective treatment for patients with fecal incontinence. It allows to improve rectal sensitivity and to increase the motor/sensitivity index, determinant for patients continence.
