Assessing stocks of Mystus tengara (Hamilton, 1822) from three different management systems in Baors (Oxbow lake) of southwest Bangladesh: Implications for sustainable management

This study was conducted to observe the stock assessments of Tengara (Mystus tengara) in three different management systems of Baors (Oxbow lake) such as System-1, System-2, and System-3. In this study, 1806 specimens were sampled using traditional fishing nets to observe growth pattern, population structure, growth parameters, natural mortality (M), fishing mortality (F), total mortality (Z), recruitment pattern, exploitation rate (E), relative yield per-recruit (Y'/R), optimum catchable length, length at first capture, steady state biomass (SSB), and maximum sustainable yield (MSY) from January to December 2021. Digital slide calipers and a digital balance were used to measure each individual's total length (TL) and body weight (BW), respectively. An empirical maximum length-based model was used to calculate size at first sexual maturity (Lm), and optimum catchable length (Lopt) was calculated based on asymptotic length (L∞). The least square linear regression equation was used to determine the regression parameters. The value of regression parameter, 'b' was 3.01 for system-1, 2.78 for system-2, and 2.70 for system-3, indicating that growth pattern of Tengara is isometric in system-1, but negative allometric growth in system-2 and system-3. The highest asymptotic length (L∞) and weight (W∞) of Tengara were found in system-1 (11.19 cm and 13.67 g) in comparison with system-2, (10.98 cm and 12.49 g) and system-3 (9.09 cm and 6.96 g) respectively. The growth coefficient (K) of the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) was 0.72 year-1, 0.72 year-1, and 0.73 year-1 for system-1, system-2 and system-3, respectively. The calculated M, F, Z were 1.72, 1.28, and 3.00 year-1 for system-1, 1.11, 0.67 and 1.78 year-1 for system-2 and 1.12, 0.84 and 1.96 year-1 for system-3 respectively. The calculated life span (tmax) was found 4.19 years for system-1, 4.15 years for system-2 and 4.12 years for system-3. The recruitment patterns showed that the highest relative percentage of recruits were found in July, June and September for system-1, system-2 and system-3 respectively, with the major recruitment peak occurring from April to June for system-1, May to June for system-2 and June to July for system-3. One minor recruitment peak also occurred from August to September in system-1. The exploitation rate was more or less same in all three systems indicating that Tengara is under exploited from all the Baors. The significantly highest SSB and MSY were found in system-1 (22.65 and 12.11 metric tons), compared to system-2 (16.16 and 10.28 metric tons) and system-3 (5.55 and 5.49 metric tons), respectively. Considering the values of regression parameters, recruitment pattern, SSB and MSY, system-1 was found more suitable for Tengara compared to system-2 and system-3 management practices of Baors. Finally, these findings will turn out to be paradigm for the impregnable management of Tengara in Baors of southwest Bangladesh.

Effect of water quality parameters and climatic influences on reproductive phenology of Macrognathus pancalus in wetland ecosystem: recommending a long-term management approach and conservation policy

The study conducted an investigation into the reproductive biology of M. pancalus and assessed the influence of water quality parameters and environmental factors on the spawning pattern within the Gajner Beel ecosystem in Bangladesh. A total of 1218 individuals of M. pancalus (46.39% males and 53.61% females) were collected monthly from the Gajner Beel during January to December 2018 using various fishing gears. The total length (TL) of each individual was measured using digital slide calipers, and the whole body weight (BW) was measured using an electronic balance. Fulton's conditions factor (KF) showed significant differences between males and females. The calculated Lm were 11.11 cm, 11.30 cm, and 11.10 cm based on maximum length, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and the logistic model. The spawning season extended from May through August, with June and July being peak months. The average total fecundity was 1495.52 ± 840.24, with a range of 370 to 4069. During peak spawning season, the average temperature and rainfall were 27°C and 370 mm, respectively. Rainfall, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, and pH all had a significant (p < 0.01) positive effect whereas temperature and TDS all had a significant (p > 0.01) negative effect on GSI. Annual air temperature in the study area increased by 0.053 °C/year, with a regression coefficient value (r2 = 0.1695), while annual mean rainfall decreased by 5.97mm/year (r2 = 0.076). This research will contribute to the development of conservation and management approaches of Mastacembelidae fish in relation to current climate variability in sub-tropical waters.

Interaction between Hypertension and Asthma in Adult

Asthma has been defined as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that is associated with recruitment of inflammatory cells and the clinical development of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough. The prevalence of asthma increased steadily over the latter part of the last century, first in the developed and then in the developing world. Current estimates suggest that asthma affects 300 million people worldwide, with a predicted additional 100 million people affected by 2025. This cross sectional study was conducted from January 1999 to August 1999 on 5642 Bangladeshi people and another same study carried out from November 2009 to April 2010 on 8088 subjects. In 1999 the prevalence of asthma was 6.9% whereas in 2010 it is 6.96%. Both asthma and hypertension are spastic disorders of smooth muscle, there is the similarities between these two diseases may predispose the individuals with one disease to the other. This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was done to find the Interaction between hypertension and asthma in adult and carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to January 2016. Fifty (50) male and fifty (50) female adult asthmatic patients aged 18-60 years were included in the study group. They are enrolled from the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh and also from locality. For comparison age matched 50 male and 50 female apparently healthy persons were also studied as control. Blood pressure was estimated by auscultatory method by sphygmomanometer. For statistical analysis unpaired student's 't' test was used. Mean blood pressure were significantly increased in study group in comparison to control group and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001). The study findings showed a high prevalence of hypertension among asthmatic patients than non asthmatic healthy persons. From this study, it may be concluded that hypertension and asthma are closely connected.

Cloning and expression of Bradyrhizobium japonicum uptake hydrogenase structural genes in Escherichia coli

To identify the structural genes for the components of Bradyrhizobium japonicum uptake hydrogenase (Mr 60,000 and 30,000), we have expressed these genes in Escherichia coli and shown that the products cross-react with antibodies to the respective hydrogenase subunits. We constructed subclones of overlapping DNA fragments from an uptake hydrogenase-complementing cosmid, pHU52 [Lambert, G. R., Cantrell, M. A., Hanus, F. J., Russell, S. A., Haddad, K. R. & Evans, H. J. (1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82, 3232-3236], in pMZ 545, a plasmid expression vector. DNA fragments inserted into one or more of the four cloning sites downstream from the E. coli lac operon promoter (Plac) on pMZ 545 generate transcriptional, but not translational, fusions. Two subclones that directed the synthesis of Mr 60,000 and 30,000 proteins in E. coli "maxicells" were identified. The DNA inserts from these subclones were then inserted down-stream of the bacteriophage lambda PL promoter on a transcriptional fusion vector. When the PL promoter was activated in vivo by heat inactivation of the temperature sensitive cI repressor of lambda in an appropriate E. coli strain, the respective fragments expressed higher levels of Mr 60,000 and 30,000 proteins that could be detected in immunoblots. These data provide direct evidence for the presence of uptake hydrogenase structural genes on the uptake hydrogenase-complementing cosmid pHU52.

Effects of garlic, turmeric and betel leaf against gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle

The experiment was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, for a period of 28 days to study the effects of garlic (Allium sativum, Linn., @100mg/kg bwt.), turmeric (Curcuma longa, Linn., @100mg/kg bwt.)  and betel leaf (Piper betle, Linn., @100mg/kg bwt.) against natural gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle. The effects of garlic, turmeric and betel leaf on some hematological parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV and TLC), biochemical parameters (ALT and AST) and clinical parameter (body weight) were also observed. Twenty four (24) naturally parasitized cattle of BAU Dairy Farm, Mymensingh were randomly divided into four groups, each consisting of six (6) cattle. Water extract of bulbs of garlic were administered orally to the cattle of group A. Cattle of group B received orally water extract of rhizome of turmeric. Cattle of group C were treated orally with leaves of betel leaf. Cattle of group D was kept as infected control group. Fecal samples, body weight, hematological and biochemical parameters were examined before treatment and on 3rd, 10th, 17th and 28th day. A significant (p < 0.01) reduction of EPG count was found following administration of garlic (20.41-40.81%), turmeric (6.09-19.27%) and betel leaf (2.91-9.8%) in cattle. The EPG count of the control group (D) were significantly (p < 0.01) increased up to the last day of experimental period. After treatment with garlic and turmeric total erythrocyte count (TEC), hemoglobin (Hb) content and packed cell volume (PCV) were gradually increased significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) in cattle. Conversely, the total leukocyte count (TLC) were decreased significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) in treated cattle. On the other hand, TEC, Hb content and PCV were gradually increased significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) on day 3 and day 10 in betel leaf treated cattle but decreased on 17th and 28th day. Conversely, the total leukocyte count (TLC) were decreased significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) on day 3 and day 10 in betel leaf treated cattle but increased significantly (p < 0.01) on 17th and 28th day. The alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level were not significantly changed in the cattle. The body weight was increased significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) in garlic, turmeric and betel leaf treated cattle. On the other hand, body weight was decreased in untreated control group. The present study reveals that water extracts of garlic were moderately effective and turmeric and betel leaf were relatively less effective against gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle.
