Abstract
Complete endothelialisation of coronary stents is an important determinant of future thrombotic complications following coronary stenting. Stent surface texture is an important factor that influences endothelial cell growth. With the emergence of second and third generation coronary stents, is limited comparative data describing endothelial cell growth in contemporary stent platforms, and limited data available on approaches used to rapidly modify the surfaces of commercial coronary stents to improve endothelialisation. In this study we have determined the in vitro proliferation of the primary human coronary artery endothelial cells on the commonly used 4 types of commercial coronary stents and found that the inner surface of BioMatrix drug-eluting stents (DES), after eliminating of the polymer and drug coating, had significantly higher endothelial cell proliferation compared to that of other bare metal stents (BMS): Multi-Link8, Integrity and Omega. The surfaces of the 3 types of BMS which are smooth, displayed similar endothelial cell proliferation, suggesting the importance of surface features in manipulating endothelial cell growth. Laser surface texturing was used to create micro/nano patterns on the stents. The laser treatment has significantly increased endothelial proliferation on the inner surfaces of all 4 types of stents, and Multi-Link8 stents displayed the highest (>100%) improvement. The laser textured BioMatrix stents had the highest absolute number of endothelial cells growth. Our results provided useful information in the endothelialisation potential for the commonly used commercial coronary stents and suggested a potential future application of laser surface bioengineering to coronary stents for better biocompatibility of the device.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iran will soon have an aging population. Healthcare providers must consider factors affecting the quality of life for those 60 and older. Understanding oral health as one of these factors can improve the elderly's quality of life. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a crucial reflection of individuals' general well-being and their overall quality of life linked to health. This study aimed to evaluate the OHRQoL among elderly Iranians referring to Azad University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 171 individuals over 65 (93 men and 78 women) were evaluated using OHIP-14 and GOHAI-12 questionnaires to analyze their quality of life. Gender, age, systemic diseases, using medications and dentures, the number of remaining teeth, and oral lesions were recorded. Salivary flow and xerostomia were analyzed with the spitting method and xerostomia index questionnaire, respectively. Also, four main flavor solutions were used to evaluate the taste perception. Data were analyzed using PASS11 and p value < .05 was the significance level. RESULTS Based on OHIP-14 and GOHAI-12, Iranian older people's quality of life can be affected by cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, xerostomia, and the number of remaining teeth (p < .05). The results also showed a significant correlation between the OHIP-14 and GOHAI-12 scores (p < .001). Both indexes revealed that the number of remaining teeth, xerostomia, salivary flow, and taste perception greatly influenced participants' quality of life. More remaining teeth, improved salivary flow, and better perception of sweetness and sourness were all linked to a higher quality of life, while increased xerostomia, reduced salivary flow, and bitter taste perception were linked to a decline in overall well-being. Cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and medication use were also found to significantly impact quality of life. CONCLUSION This study's results indicate that cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, dry mouth, and tooth loss can negatively impact the elderly's quality of life. So, improving both systemic and oral health is vital for enhancing life quality in this age group.

Abstract
Objectives To compare susceptibility of five different stent platforms with longitudinal stent deformation (LSD) using a clinically relevant bench testing model simulating both short and long malapposed lengths. Background Recent data suggest that design modifications to the Promus Element stent which led to the Promus Premier stent has reduced susceptibility to LSD. However, susceptibility to LSD at long malapposed lengths has not been tested. Furthermore, the mechanisms behind susceptibility to LSD are as yet unclear. Methods The Omega, Integrity, Multilink 8, Biomatrixand Promus Premier stent platforms were tested. The Omega, Integrity and Multilink 8 platforms were used in place of their drug-eluting equivalents. 3.5 mm stents were deployed in a stepped tube with the distal portion fixed and the proximal test section exposed. The force required to compress stents by a fixed distance at different exposed lengths was compared. Symmetrical and point loading were used. Results The Promus Premier was longitudinally as strong as Multilink and Integrity at a short exposed length (4 mm) but weaker, in between Omega and the other platforms, at longer exposed lengths (12 mm). As previously noted, the Omega (Promus Element) platform was significantly weaker than the other stents and Biomatrix was the strongest stent. Conclusion Susceptibility to LSD varies depending on length of malapposed segment when tested using a clinically relevant model as in this study. The mechanisms behind the susceptibility are likely multifactorial, including connector number, strut thickness, connector alignment and ring orientation but remain to be elucidated.

Abstract
Supplementation by the general public with vitamin D at doses above the Tolerable Upper Level of Intake (UL) is becoming quite common. The objective of the current analysis was to characterize the effect of vitamin D supplementation at doses up to 15,000 IU/d in a community-based program on vitamin D status, calcium homeostasis as well as on kidney, liver and immune function. We evaluated data collected for 3,882 participants in a community program for whom there were blood measurements at program entry and at follow-up within 6-18 months between 2013 and 2015. Participants were supplemented with a wide range of vitamin D doses (1,000 - 15,000 IU/d) aimed at achieving serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels of at least 100 nmol/L. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations up to 300 nmol/L were achieved without perturbation of calcium homeostasis or incidence of toxicity. Hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria were not related to an increase in 25(OH)D concentrations nor vitamin D dose. To achieve serum 25(OH)D levels >100 nmol/L on average, required vitamin D intakes of 6,000 IU/d for normal Body Mass Index (BMI), 7,000 IU/d for overweight and 8,000 IU/d for obese. Doses of vitamin D in excess of 6,000 IU/d were required to achieve serum 25(OH)D concentrations above 100 nmol/L, especially in individuals who were overweight or obese without any evidence of toxicity. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations up to 300 nmol/L were found to be safe.

Abstract
We have developed a laser-textured superhydrophilic Ti-6Al-4V surface with unique surface chemistry and topography that substantially promotes osteoblast adhesion in culture. Here we investigate the osteointegration of laser-textured implants in an ovine model. Our hypothesis was that laser-textured implants, without any surface coating (LT), would encourage comparable amounts of bone-implant contact and interfacial strength when compared with widely accepted hydroxyapatite (HA) coated implants. Additionally, we hypothesized that LT would significantly increase bony integration compared with machine-finished (MF) and grit-blasted (GB) implants. Forty-eight tapered transcortical pins were implanted into six sheep. Four experimental groups (LT, HA, MF, and GB) were investigated (n = 12) and implants remained in vivo for 6 weeks. Bone apposition rates, interfacial shear strength, and bone-implant contact (BIC) were quantified. The interfacial strength of LT and HA implants were found to be significantly greater than GB (p = 0.032 and p = 0.004) and MF (p = 0.004 and p = 0.004, respectively), but no significant difference between LT and HA implants was observed. Significantly increased BIC was measured adjacent to HA implants when compared with both LT and GB implant surfaces (p = 0.022 and p = 0.006, respectively). No significant difference was found when LT and GB implants were compared. However, all surface finishes encouraged significantly increased BIC when compared with the MF surface. Maximizing implant fixation to host bone is vital for its long-term success. The production of an LT surface is a simple and cheap manufacturing process and this study demonstrated that laser-textured implants are a very promising technical development that warrants further research. © 2016 Orthopaedic Research Society. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Coronary stents have been widely used in the treatment of coronary heart disease. However, complications have hampered the long-term success of the device. Bare-metal stents (BMS) have a high rate of restenosis and poor endothelialisation. The drug-eluting stents (DES), although dramatically reduce restenosis, significantly prevent endothelialisation leading to late thrombosis and behave the same way as BMS after drug releasing. Rapid adhesion and growth of endothelial cells on the stent surface is a key process for early vascular healing after coronary stenting which contributes to the reduction of major complications. Surface properties manipulate cell growth and directly determine the success and life-span of the implants. However, the ideal surface properties of coronary stents are not yet fully understood. The objective of this research is to understand how surface micro/nano textures and associated material chemistry changes generated by a laser beam affect the behavior of endothelial cells on bare metal 316L stents. MATERIALS AND METHODS A high power laser beam was applied to modifying the surface properties of 316L coronary stent material and the commercial coronary stents, followed by examination of the adhesion and proliferation of human coronary endothelial cells that were growing on the surfaces. Surface properties were examined by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. RESULTS A novel surface with combined micro/nano features was created on stent material 316L and coronary stent with a specific surface chemistry. This surface gives rise to a threefold increase in the adhesion and eightfold increase in the proliferation of endothelial cells. Interestingly, such effects were only observed when the surface texture was produced in the nitrogen atmosphere suggesting the importance of the surface chemistry, including the dramatic increase of chromium nitride, for the interaction of endothelial cells with the material surface. This novel surface is also super-hydrophilic with close to zero water/cell culture fluid contact angles and low cytotoxicity. CONCLUSIONS A novel surface created by laser surface-engineering with a combination of defined surface texture and surface chemistry was found beneficial for the improvement of coronary stent endothelialisation. The technology presented here could work with both DES and BMS with added benefit for the improvement of the biocompatibility of current coronary stents.

Abstract
A flock of 14 apparently healthy cockatiels, purchased from a single aviary, was tested for the presence of avian bornavirus (ABV). Twelve birds were found to be intermittently shedding ABV, predominantly genotype 4. Four of the cockatiels known to be shedding ABV4 were subsequently challenged with the tissue culture derived, virulent M24 strain of ABV4. The challenged birds remained in apparent good health until day 92 when one was found dead. The remaining three birds began to exhibit severe neurologic signs, ataxia and convulsions on day 110 and were euthanized. On necropsy, all four birds showed mild proventricular enlargement. In contrast, histopathological examination showed unusually severe and widespread tissue lesions. These included massive lymphocytic infiltration and lymphoid nodule formation within and around the ganglia throughout the gastrointestinal tract. There were similar lesions in the medullary cords of the adrenal gland, heart, spleen, liver, kidney, lungs, pancreas, testes and ovary. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated ABV P antigen not only in the cells of the central and autonomic nervous systems, but also within the mononuclear cells infiltrating the various organs. Two healthy cockatiels, one of which was a known ABV carrier, were inoculated with uninfected tissue culture cells and euthanized on day 150. These birds showed no gross lesions of proventricular dilatation disease but had a mild lymphocytic infiltration in their liver, spleen, and kidneys. Prior infection with ABV did not therefore confer significant immunity on these birds, and may have resulted in increased disease severity following challenge.

Abstract
To examine whether dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids from Clupeonella grimmi can relieve symptoms of dysmenorrhoea, we carried out a cross-over clinical trial on 36 girls aged 18-22 years. They were randomly allocated into 2 groups of 18. Group A received 15 mL fish oil daily (550 mg eicosapentaenoic acid; 205 mg decosahexaenoic acid) while Group B received placebo. After 3 months, the treatment regimens were swapped. The treatment groups reported a significant difference after 3 months of supplementation with fish oil (visual analogue scale score 20.9 compared with 61.8 for the placebo (P= 0.001). There was also a marked reduction in low back pain and abdominal pain (P < 0.05), and participants needed significantly fewer rescue doses of ibuprofen while using fish oil.
