Abstract
Most superconductors have an isotropic, single component order parameter and are well described by the standard (BCS) theory for superconductivity. Unconventional, multiple-component superconductors are exceptionally rare and are much less understood. Here, we combine scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved macroscopic transport for studying the candidate chiral superconductor, 4Hb-TaS2. We reveal quasi-periodic one-dimensional modulations in the tunneling conductance accompanied by two-fold symmetric superconducting critical field. The strong modulation of the in-plane critical field, Hc2, points to a nematic, unconventional order parameter. However, the imaged vortex core is isotropic at low temperatures. We suggest a model that reconciles this apparent discrepancy and takes into account previously observed spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at low temperatures. The model describes a competition between a dominating chiral superconducting order parameter and a nematic one. The latter emerges close to the normal phase. Our results strongly support the existence of two-component superconductivity in 4Hb-TaS2 and can provide valuable insights into other systems with coexistent charge order and superconductivity.

Abstract
Projectile damage to building stone is a widespread phenomenon. Sites damaged 100 years ago during the First World War still see daily use, while in a more contemporary setting numerous reports show the damage to buildings in Babylon, Mosul and Palmyra. While research has been carried out on the long-term effects of conflict such as fire damage, little is known about the protracted damage sustained through the impact of bullets, shrapnel and other metal projectiles outside of the field of engineering focused on ceramics and metals. To investigate alterations to mineral structure caused by projectile damage, impacts were created in medium-grained, well-compacted, mesoporous sandstone samples using 0.22 calibre lead bullets shot at a distance of 20 m. Half these samples were treated with a surface consolidant (Wacker OH 100), to mimic natural cementation of the rock surface. These samples were then tested for changes to surface hardness and moisture movement during temperature cycles of 15-65°C. Petrographic thin section analysis was carried out to investigate the micro-scale deformation associated with high-speed impact. The results surprisingly show that stress build-up behind pre-existing cementation of the surface, as found in heritage sites that have been exposed to moisture and temperature fluctuations for longer periods of time, can be alleviated with a bullet impact. However, fracture networks and alteration of the mineral matrices still form a weak point within the structure, even at a relatively low impact calibre. This initial study illustrates the need for geomorphologists, geologists, engineers and heritage specialists to work collectively to gain further insights into the long-term impact of higher calibre armed warfare on heritage deterioration.

Abstract
Hormonal measurements and HLA genotyping of amniotic fluid at midgestation correctly predicted the postnatal diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) in 29 of 32 fetuses at risk. Of these 29, 7 were predicted to have prenatal-onset classical 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OH def) based on elevated amniotic fluid 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) and delta 4-androstenedione (delta 4-A) levels. These 7 fetuses and their index cases were ultimately proven to have salt-wasting classical 21-OH def. Of 5 who were HLA typed, the genotype was identical to the index case in 4; in one, HLA prediction was not possible, because the parents shared identical HLA antigens. Normal amniotic fluid 17-OHP and delta 4-A levels in the remaining 22 fetuses predicted that they were not affected with classical CAH. These children have been clinically asymptomatic to date or proven biochemically not to have classical or nonclassical CAH. Of the 22 fetuses, 11 were predicted by HLA genotyping to be homozygous normal or heterozygous for 21-OH def. In 3 of the 32 fetuses, prenatal diagnosis was incorrect. In one, the fetus was predicted to have CAH based on HLA identity to the index case. However, amniotic fluid 17-OHP and delta 4-A were normal, and the fetus was normal. The index case of this family did not have CAH, but was a normal child. Thus, amniotic fluid hormone levels accurately predicted a normal fetus, while HLA genotyping was not relevant in prenatal diagnosis because the index case was unaffected. The second fetus was predicted to be affected on the basis of HLA genotyping and to be unaffected based on normal amniotic fluid 17-OHP and delta 4-A. During infancy, this female infant had postnatal-onset nonclassical CAH. The index case in this family, presumed to have classical simple virilizing CAH, was later diagnosed to have nonclassical CAH. Thus, in nonclassical CAH, hormonal measurement of 17-OHP and delta 4-A is not useful in prenatal diagnosis; only HLA genotyping of the fetus is valuable. In the third case, the fetus was predicted to be a heterozygote by HLA genotyping and to be unaffected by hormonal measurement. Postnatally, at age 2 7/12 yr, the male child was found to have classical simple virilizing CAH and to be HLA-B-DR identical to his brother (index case) who also has classical simple virilizing CAH.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Catecholamine and cortisol responses to sufentanil-O2 and alfentanil-O2 anaesthesia during coronary artery surgery. CANADIAN ANAESTHETISTS' SOCIETY JOURNAL 1983; 30:248-54. Abstract
The effects of alfentanil-O2 and sufentanil-O2 anaesthesia on plasma catecholamines and cortisol were investigated in 32 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting operations. After lorazepam-atropine premedication and pancuronium pretreatment, alfentanil was given to 16 patients at a rate of 3 mg.min-1 and sufentanil was given to 16 patients at 300 micrograms.min-1 until the patients were unconscious; at this time they were given succinylcholine and were intubated. After intubation an amount of alfentanil or sufentanil equal to the dose producing unconsciousness was infused over the next 30 min, at which time the operation began. Additional alfentanil or sufentanil were given whenever systolic arterial blood pressure increased more than 15 per cent of preanaesthetic values. Arterial blood samples were obtained for epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol assay and cardiovascular dynamics were recorded prior to anaesthetic induction, 5 min after tracheal intubation, immediately prior to and five min after incision, ten min after maximal sternal spread, just prior to beginning and after 30 and 60 min of bypass and at the end of operation. Cardiovascular dynamics were little changed throughout anaesthesia and operation. Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine were not significantly changed until bypass. During bypass both hormones became increased and remained increased at the end of operation. Plasma cortisol decreased after incision and remained decreased until the end of operation. These data indicate that alfentanil-O2 and sufentanil-O2 anaesthesia produce similar changes in plasma catecholamines and cortisol as does fentanyl-O2 anaesthesia and hormonal effects are, therefore, not an explanation for any advantages the newer narcotics may have over fentanyl.
