Mechanical and Surface Properties of Monolithic Zirconia

Purpose:

This study compared monolithic zirconia with conventional ones based on mean roughness (Ra), Vickers hardness (VHN), topography, transmittance, grain size, flexural strength (FS), Weibull modulus, and fractographic behavior.

Methods and Materials:

One monolithic (Prettau Zircon [PR group]) and two conventional (ICE Zirkon Transluzent [IZ group] and BloomZir [BL group]) zirconias were used. Specimens were tested using a profilometer, a microhardness tester, a scanning electron microscope, a spectrophotometer, and a Universal Testing Machine (EMIC DL 2000). Ra, VHN, grain size, and transmittance were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test associated with Dunn test (α=0.05). FS was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance with the Tukey honestly significant difference test (α=0.05).

Results:

Means and standard deviations of roughness, after sintering (Ra, in μm) and VHN, were, respectively, 0.11 ± 0.01, 1452.16 ± 79.49, for the PR group; 0.12 ± 0.02, 1466.72 ± 91.76, for the IZ group; and 0.21 ± 0.08, 1516.06 ± 104.02, for the BL group. BL was statistically rougher (p<0.01) than PR and IZ. Hardness was statistically similar (p=0.30) for all groups. Means and standard deviations of FS (in MPa) were 846.65 ± 81.97 for the PR group, 808.88 ± 117.99 for the IZ group, and 771.81 ± 114.43 for the BL group, with no statistical difference (p>0.05). Weibull moduli were 12.47 for the PR group, 7.24 for the IZ group, and 6.31 for the BL group, with no statistical differences. The PR and BL groups had higher transmittance values and grain sizes than the IZ group (p<0.05). Although the BL group had some fractures that originated in the center of the tensile surface, fractographic analyses showed the same fracture pattern.

Conclusions:

All tested zirconia showed similar VHN, and the monolithic zirconia had similar roughness compared to one of the conventional zirconias. In addition, the monolithic zirconia showed similar flexural strength and Weibull modulus compared to the others even though its mean grain size was larger. The total transmittance of monolithic zirconia was higher than only one of the conventional zirconias tested.

Micropatterned Silica Films with Nanohydroxyapatite for Y-TZP Implants

This investigation aimed at developing micropatterned silica thin films (MSTFs) containing nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HA) microaggregates that were not completely covered by silica so that they could directly interact with the surrounding cells. The objectives were 1) to evaluate the effect of the presence of 2 films (MSTF with or without nano-HA addition) on the characteristic strength (σ₀) and Weibull modulus ( m) of a yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and 2) to evaluate the effect of these 2 films, as applied onto the Y-TZP surface, on the morphology, orientation, and proliferation of MG63 cells. Sol-gel process and soft lithography were used to apply the MSTF onto the Y-TZP specimens. Three experimental groups were produced: Y-TZP, Y-TZP + MSTF, and Y-TZP + MSTF + sprayed nano-HA. All surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and tested for 4-point flexural strength ( n = 30) in water at 37 °C. Weibull analysis was used to determine m and σ₀ (maximum likelihood method). In vitro biological behavior was performed with human osteoblast-like cells (MG63). Y-TZP was successfully coated with MSFT and MSFT + nano-HA. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs indicated that the microaggregates of nano-HA were not entirely covered by the silica. There was no statistically significant difference among the experimental groups for σ₀ and m. In the groups containing the films, the cells were elongated and aligned along the lines. The MSFT + nano-HA group showed significantly higher cell metabolic activity than that obtained for the Y-TZP group at day 7. This investigation was successful in producing an MSTF containing nano-HA microaggregates that remained exposed to the environment. The developed films did not jeopardize the structural reliability of a commercial Y-TZP, as confirmed by the Weibull statistics. The MG63 cells seeded over the films became elongated and aligned along the films' micropatterned lines. Y-TZP specimens coated with MSTF and nano-HA showed a higher cell metabolic activity and proliferation after 7 d of culture when compared with uncoated Y-TZP.

Influence of Finishing and Polishing Techniques and Abrasion on Transmittance and Roughness of Composite Resins

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of finishing and polishing systems and toothbrush abrasion on transmittance (T) and surface roughness (Ra) of three composite resins (Filtek Z350 XT, Tetric N-Ceram, and IPS Empress Direct). Eighteen resin disks (10 mm diameter × 2 mm thick) finished by polyester strips had initial surface smoothness recorded, representing phase 1 (P1). Specimens were divided into three groups (n=6) according to the finishing/polishing instrument used (OneGloss, TopGloss, and Sof-Lex) to compose phase 2 samples (P2). Then specimens were subjected to 514 cycles of toothbrush simulation using a toothpaste slurry, with a constant load applied to soft bristles, and were then washed (phase 3=P3). After each phase, the specimens were examined by an optical profiler and spectrophotometer to measure Ra and T. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, Tukey and Pearson tests. T values were statistically influenced by composite resin ( p=0.000) and phase of measurement ( p=0.000) factors, while the finishing/polishing system used ( p=0.741) did not affect T. On the other hand, Ra values were statistically affected by the factor finishing/polishing system ( p=0.000), but not by composite resin ( p=0.100) and phase of measurement ( p=0.451). Tetric N-Ceram and Empress Direct presented higher values of roughness when polished by OneGloss, while TopGloss and Sof-Lex showed a lower roughness. It can be concluded that composite resins transmitted more light after dental abrasion. Transmittance of composite resins was not modified by the distinct roughness created by finishing/polishing instruments.

Efeito do Processamento Cerâmico e Adição de Nanotubos de TiO2 na Confiabilidade da Y-TZP: Análises Fractográfica e de Weibull

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influencia do processamento e adição de diferentes concentrações de nanotubos TiO2 (TiO2 nt) (0, 1, 2 e 5% em volume) em Y-TZP experimental quanto à confiabilidade, comparada à Y-TZP comercial (e.max ZirCad, Ivoclar/Vivadent). Todas as etapas da confecção das Y-TZPs experimentais foram controladas: mistura do pó, secagem, granulação, conformação e sinterização. Espécimes (12 ø x 1,1mm) foram obtidos para cada grupo (n28). A Y-TZP comercial foi preparada para se obter o mesmos formatos e dimensões (pós sinterização) dos espécimes experimentais. Todos espécimes foram submetidos ao teste de flexão biaxial (RFB) até a fratura, de acordo com as normas da ISO 6872, 2016. Dados de RFB foram submetidos     aos testes de ANOVA e Tukey (a0,05). Os dados de RFB também foram utilizados para o cálculo do módulo de Weibull (m) e resistência característica (o) de cada grupo (Weibull 7++, Reliasoft, Tucson, USA). Cinco espécimes de cada grupo foram analisados em Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) para análise fractográfica. RFB: Y-TZP comercial apresentou os maiores valores (p<0,05), diferindo dos grupos de Y-TZP experimentais. m e o: os grupos de Y-TZP experimentais obtiveram os maiores valores em comparação à Y-TZP comercial, sendo que a Y-TZP 0% de TiO2 nt obteve os maiores valores, diferindo das concentrações 1, 2 e 5%. A análise fractográfica mostrou padrões de fratura similares entre os grupos. O controle do processamento da Y-TZP aumentou a confiabilidade populacional do material.Palavras-chave: Cerâmica. Ceramic Inlays: Effect of Mechanical Cycling and Ceramic Type on Restoration-dentin Bond Strength

This study aimed to evaluate the bond strength between dentin and five different ceramic inlays in permanent maxillary premolars, with and without mechanical cycling. One hundred permanent maxillary premolars were prepared and divided into 10 groups (n=10) according to the ceramic system (IPS e.Max Press; IPS e.Max CAD; Vita PM9; Vita Mark II; and Vita VM7) and the mechanical cycling factor (with and without [100 N, 2 Hz, 1.2×106 cycles]). The inlays were adhesively cemented, and all of the specimens were cut into microbars (1×1 mm, nontrimming method), which were tested under microtensile loading. The failure mode was classified and contact angle, roughness, and microtopographic analyses were performed on each ceramic surface. The mechanical cycling had a significant effect (p=0.0087) on the bond strength between dentin and IPS e.max Press. The Vita Mark II group had the highest bond strength values under both conditions, with mechanical cycling (9.7±1.8 MPa) and without (8.2±1.9 MPa), while IPS e.Max CAD had the lowest values (2.6±1.6 and 2.2±1.4, respectively). The adhesive failure mode at the ceramic/cement interface was the most frequent. Vita Mark II showed the highest value of average roughness. IPS e.max Press and Vita Mark II ceramics presented the lowest contact angles. In conclusion, the composition and manufacturing process of ceramics seem to have an influence on the ceramic surface and resin cement bond strength. Mechanical cycling did not cause significant degradation on the dentin and ceramic bond strength under the configuration used.

Fracture Load and Phase Transformation of Monolithic Zirconia Crowns Submitted to Different Aging Protocols

Monolithic zirconia crowns have many favorable properties and may potentially be used to solve dental problems such as chipping. However, monolithic zirconia crown resistance can be affected by its phase transformation when subjected to low temperatures, humidity, and stress. This study evaluated the fracture load and phase transformation of monolithic zirconia crowns submitted to different thermal and mechanical aging tests. Seventy monolithic zirconia crowns were randomly divided into the following five groups: control, no treatment; hydrothermal aging at 122°C, two bar for one hour; thermal fatigue, 10⁴ cycles between 5°C and 55°C, dwell time, 30 seconds; and mechanical fatigue, 10⁶ cycles with a load of 70 N, sliding of 1.5 mm at 1.4 Hz; and combination of mechanical plus thermal fatigue. Fracture load was measured with a universal testing machine. Surface changes and fracture mode and origin were examined with a scanning electron microscope. Monoclinic phase content was evaluated by x-ray diffraction. The fracture load was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance at a level of 5%, and Weibull distribution was performed. No statistically significant differences were observed in the mean fracture load and characteristic fracture load among the groups (p>0.05). The Weibull modulus ranged from 6.2 to 16.6. The failure mode was similar for all groups with the crack origin located at the contact point of the indenter. Phase transformation was shown at different surfaces of the crown in all groups (1.9% to 8.9%). In conclusion, monolithic zirconia crowns possess high fracture load, structural reliability, and low phase transformation.

CO2 Laser Glazing Treatment of a Veneering Porcelain: Effects on Porosity, Translucency, and Mechanical Properties

This work tested CO2 laser as a glazing agent and investigated the effects of irradiation on the porosity, translucency, and mechanical properties of veneering porcelain. Sixty discs (diameter 3.5 × 2.0 mm) of veneering porcelain for Y-TZP frameworks (VM9, VITA Zahnfabrik) were sintered and had one of their faces mirror polished. The specimens were divided into six groups (n=10/group) according to surface treatment, as follows: no treatment-control; auto-glaze in furnace following manufacturer's instructions (G); and CO2 laser (45 or 50 W/cm(2)) applied for four or five minutes (L45/4, L45/5, L50/4, L50/5). Optical microscopy (Shimadzu, 100×) was conducted and the images were analyzed with Image J software for the determination of the following porosity parameters: area fraction, average size, and Feret diameter. The translucency parameter studied was masking ability, determined by color difference (ΔE) over black and white backgrounds (CM3370d, Konica Minolta). Microhardness and fracture toughness (indentation fracture) were measured with a Vickers indenter (HMV, Shimadzu). Contact atomic force microscopy (AFM) (50 × 50 μm(2), Nanoscope IIIA, Veeco) was performed at the center of one sample from each group, except in the case of L45/5. With regard to porosity and translucency parameters, auto-glazed and laser-irradiated specimens presented statistical similarity. The area fraction of the surface pores ranged between 2.4% and 5.4% for irradiated specimens. Group L50/5 presented higher microhardness when compared to the G group. The higher (1.1) and lower (0.8) values for fracture toughness (MPa.m(1/2)) were found in laser-irradiated groups (L50/4 and L45/4, respectively). AFM performed after laser treatment revealed changes in porcelain surface profile at a submicrometric scale, with the presence of elongated peaks and deep valleys.

Evaluation of tensile retention of Y-TZP crowns cemented on resin composite cores: effect of the cement and Y-TZP surface conditioning

This study evaluated the effect of the cement type (adhesive resin, self-adhesive, glass ionomer, and zinc phosphate) on the retention of crowns made of yttria-stabilized polycrystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP). Therefore, 108 freshly extracted molars were embedded in acrylic resin, perpendicular to their long axis, and prepared for full crowns: the crown preparations were removed and reconstructed using composite resin plus fiber posts with dimensions identical to the prepared dentin. The preparations were impressed using addition silicone, and Y-TZP copings were produced, which presented a special setup for the tensile testing. Cementation was performed with two adhesive resin cements (Multilink Automix, Ivoclar-Vivadent; RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA), one self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U100, 3M ESPE), one glass ionomer based cement (RelyX Luting, 3M ESPE), and one zinc phosphate cement (Cimento de Zinco, SS White, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). For the resin cement groups, the inner surfaces of the crowns were subjected to three surface treatments: cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, tribochemical silica coating, or application of a thin low-fusing glass porcelain layer plus silanization. After 24 hours, all groups were subjected to thermocycling (6000 cycles) and included in a special device for tensile testing in a universal testing machine to test the retention of the infrastructure. After testing, the failure modes of all samples were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that the surface treatment and cement type (α=0.05) affected the tensile retention results. The Multilink cement presented the highest tensile retention values, but that result was not statistically different from RelyX ARC. The surface treatment was statistically relevant only for the Multilink cement. The cement choice was shown to be more important than the crown surface treatment for cementation of a Y-TZP crown to a composite resin substrate.

Evaluation of tensile retention of Y-TZP crowns after long-term aging: effect of the core substrate and crown surface conditioning

This study evaluated the effect of the core substrate type (dentin and composite resin) on the retention of crowns made of yttrium oxide stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP), submitted to three inner surface conditionings. For this purpose, 72 freshly extracted molars were embedded in acrylic resin, perpendicular to the long axis, and prepared for full crowns: 36 specimens had crown preparations in dentin; the remaining 36 teeth had the crowns removed, and crown preparations were reconstructed with composite resin plus fiber posts with dimensions identical to the prepared dentin. The preparations were impressed using addition silicone, and 72 Y-TZP copings for the tensile test were produced. Cementation was performed with a dual-cured cement containing phosphate monomers. For cementation, the crown preparation (dentin or resin) was conditioned with the adhesive system, and the ceramic was subjected to one of three surface treatments: isopropyl alcohol, tribochemical silica coating, or thin low-fusing glassy porcelain layer application plus silanization. After 24 hours, all specimens were submitted to thermocycling (6000 cycles) and placed in a special tensile testing device in a universal testing machine to determine failure loads. The failure modes of all samples were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. Two-way analysis of variance showed that the surface treatment and substrate type (α=0.05) affected the tensile retention results. The dentin substrate presented the highest tensile retention values, regardless of the surface treatment. When the substrate was resin, the tribochemical silica coating and low-fusing glaze application plus silanization groups showed the higher retention values.

Effect of temperature on the degree of conversion and working time of dual-cured resin cements exposed to different curing conditions

OBJECTIVES

This study evaluated the degree of conversion (DC) and working time (WT) of two commercial, dual-cured resin cements polymerized at varying temperatures and under different curing-light accessible conditions, using Fourier transformed infrared analysis (FTIR).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Calibra (Cal; Dentsply Caulk) and Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent) were tested at 25°C or preheated to 37°C or 50°C and applied to a similar-temperature surface of a horizontal attenuated-total-reflectance unit (ATR) attached to an infrared spectrometer. The products were polymerized using one of four conditions: direct light exposure only (600 mW/cm(2)) through a glass slide or through a 1.5- or 3.0-mm-thick ceramic disc (A2 shade, IPS e.max, Ivoclar Vivadent) or allowed to self-cure in the absence of light curing. FTIR spectra were recorded for 20 min (1 spectrum/s, 16 scans/spectrum, resolution 4 cm(-1)) immediately after application to the ATR. DC was calculated using standard techniques of observing changes in aliphatic-to-aromatic peak ratios precuring and 20-min postcuring as well as during each 1-second interval. Time-based monomer conversion analysis was used to determine WT at each temperature. DC and WT data (n=6) were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc test (p=0.05).

RESULTS

Higher temperatures increased DC regardless of curing mode and product. For Calibra, only the 3-mm-thick ceramic group showed lower DC than the other groups at 25°C (p=0.01830), while no significant difference was observed among groups at 37°C and 50°C. For Variolink, the 3-mm-thick ceramic group showed lower DC than the 1-mm-thick group only at 25°C, while the self-cure group showed lower DC than the others at all temperatures (p=0.00001). WT decreased with increasing temperature: at 37°C near 70% reduction and at 50°C near 90% for both products, with WT reduction reaching clinically inappropriate times in some cases (p=0.00001).

CONCLUSION

Elevated temperature during polymerization of dual-cured cements increased DC. WT was reduced with elevated temperature, but the extent of reduction might not be clinically acceptable.

Correlation between microleakage and cement thickness in three Class II inlay ceramic systems

The objectives of this study include comparing the cement thickness and microleakage of Class II ceramic inlays built with three ceramic systems and verifying whether there was a correlation between those two variables. The ceramic systems used include: 1) Heat-pressed (IPS-Empress); 2) CAD-CAM (CEREC 2) and 3) Sintered (Colorlogic). Standardized MOD Class II inlay cavities with one proximal box extending below and the other extending above the cement-enamel junction (CEJ) were prepared in 30 extracted human molars and randomly assigned to three groups. The ceramic inlays were constructed according to manufacturer's instructions and cemented using a dual-cure resin cement (Variolink II). All teeth were mechanically cycled (100,000 cycles, 78N) and thermocycled (700 cycles, 5 degrees C-55 degrees C). After immersion in silver nitrate, the inlays were sectioned mesial-distally and evaluated with an optical microscope (40x). The cement thickness obtained by the Colorlogic system (enamel: 113 +/- 25 microm; dentin: 118 +/- 23 microm) was significantly higher than that obtained by CEREC (enamel: 78 +/- 14 microm; dentin: 87 +/- 13 microm) and Empress (enamel: 65 +/- 15 microm; dentin: 89 +/- 14 microm). Regarding dye penetration, there was no statistical difference among the three ceramic systems in enamel. At the dentin margins, the Colorlogic system resulted in a significantly higher penetration depth compared to CEREC and Empress, which had similar average values. No correlation was found between cement thickness and microleakage either in enamel or dentin for any of the ceramic systems.

Mechanical properties of resin cements with different activation modes

Dual-cured cements have been studied in terms of the hardness or degree of conversion achieved with different curing modes. However, little emphasis is given to the influence of the curing method on other mechanical properties. This study investigated the flexural strength, flexural modulus and hardness of four proprietary resin cements. Materials tested were: Enforce and Variolink II (light-, self- and dual-cured), RelyX ARC (self- and dual-cured) and C & B (self-cured). Specimens were fractured using a three-point bending test. Pre-failure loads corresponding to specific displacements of the cross-head were used for flexural modulus calculation. Knoop hardness (KHN) was measured on fragments obtained after the flexural test. Tests were performed after 24 h storage at 37 degrees C. RelyX ARC dual-cured showed higher flexural strength than the other groups. RelyX ARC and Variolink II depended upon photo-activation to achieve higher hardness values. Enforce showed similar hardness for dual- and self-curing modes. No correlation was found between flexural strength and hardness, indicating that other factors besides the degree of cure (e.g. filler content and monomer type) affect the flexural strength of composites. No statistical difference was detected in the flexural modulus among the different groups.

Tensile bond strength of composite repairs on Artglass using different surface treatments

PURPOSE

To determine the tensile bond strength of composite repairs applied to Artglass using different surface treatments.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Blocks of Artglass were embedded in PVC cylinders with self-cure acrylic resin and divided into 18 groups according to the surface treatment. Three mechanical treatments and six chemical treatments were combined. Mechanical treatments were: sandpaper, diamond bur and microetch. Chemical treatments were: Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB) only, phosphoric acid+PB, hydrofluoric acid (applied for 1 or 3 minutes) +PB, Artglass Liquid only and silane+PB. After surface treatment, a composite truncated cone (Charisma, shade A3) was built. Tensile test was carried out after 24 hrs storage in distilled water at 37 degrees C. Failure mode was assessed using a x 10 stereomicroscope. Artglass surfaces treated mechanically and their combination with phosphoric acid and hydrofluoric acid were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

RESULTS

Two-way ANOVA revealed that there was no statistical difference in bond strength among the three mechanical treatments used, except for the groups where Artglass Liquid and silane were used. The use of phosphoric acid and Artglass Liquid did not improve the bond strength of the specimens compared to the groups where only PB was applied, regardless of the mechanical treatment. Hydrofluoric acid treatment for 1 and 3 minutes reduced the bond strength significantly compared to the other chemical treatments. The association of silane with microetching resulted in a statistically higher bond strength compared to all the other experimental groups. SEM analysis showed that the application of phosphoric acid failed to promote changes in mechanically treated samples. On the other hand, when hydrofluoric acid was associated to either diamond bur or microetching, the topography created by the mechanical treatment was at least partially destroyed.

Influence of shade and storage time on the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness of composites used for indirect restorations

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Fracture resistance, elastic modulus, and hydrolytic degradation resistance are important properties of indirect composite restorations. Composite systems developed specifically for indirect application are said to have enhanced mechanical properties due to their elevated monomer conversion.

PURPOSE

This study evaluated the influence of shade and the effect of 30-day water storage on the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness of 4 commercially available indirect composite systems and 1 composite used with the direct technique.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A variety of commercially available indirect resin composites (Artglass, Belleglass, Sculpture, and Targis) and 1 directly placed composite (Z100, control) were used. Specimens made with either incisal or dentin shade (n = 10) were fractured with a 3-point bending test. Pre-failure loads corresponding to specific displacements of the crosshead were used for flexural modulus calculation. Knoop hardness was measured on fragments (n = 3) obtained after the flexural test. Tests were performed after 24 hours and after a 30-day water storage at 37 degrees C. Flexural strength data were analyzed with the Weibull distribution. Flexural modulus and Knoop hardness data were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (alpha=0.05).

RESULTS

In general, the directly placed composite (Z100) demonstrated flexural strength similar to that of Artglass, Targis, and Sculpture. Belleglass presented the highest flexural strength (221.7 MPa for incisal shade after 24 hours storage; 95% confidence interval: 208.3-235.4). Z100 demonstrated the highest flexural modulus (range: 10.9 +/- 0.6 to 12.0 +/- 0.9 GPa) and Targis the lowest (range: 5.1 +/- 0.5 to 5.9 +/- 0.9 GPa). Sculpture was the only material that showed differences in flexural strength with respect to shade (incisal-24 hours: 149.8 MPa; incisal-30 days: 148.7 MPa; dentin-24 hours: 200.0 MPa; dentin-30 days: 177.9 MPa). The flexural modulus and hardness of the dentin shade of Sculpture were higher than those of the incisal shade after 30 days. Belleglass also showed a significant difference in flexural modulus (dentin-24 hours: 11.1 GPa; incisal-24 hours: 9.6 GPa). The effect of water storage was more evident on hardness since all composite systems softened after 30 days. Prolonged water storage decreased flexural strength only for Artglass-dentin and Z100, both incisal and dentin shades. Water aging did not affect the flexural modulus of any composite tested.

CONCLUSION

In general, indirect composites did not show enhanced mechanical properties compared to the directly placed composite. Property differences due to shade were more evident for Sculpture. Prolonged water storage had a deleterious effect on the hardness of all composites tested. However, water storage did not affect the flexural strength of most of the indirect composites or the flexural modulus of any composite tested.

Tensile bond strength of filled and unfilled adhesives to dentin

PURPOSE

To determine the tensile bond strength of three filled and two unfilled adhesives applied to bovine dentin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fragments of the labial dentin of bovine incisors were embedded in PVC cylinders with self-cure acrylic resin, and ground flat using 200 grit and 600 grit sandpaper. The following adhesive systems were tested (n=10): Prime & Bond NT, Prime & Bond NT dual cure, Prime & Bond 2.1, OptiBond Solo and Single Bond. A 3 mm-diameter bonding surface was delimited using a perforated adhesive tape. After etching with 37% phosphoric acid and adhesive application, a resin-based composite truncated cone (TPH, shade A3) was built. Tensile test was performed after 24 hrs storage in distilled water at 37 degrees C. Failure mode was accessed using a x10 magnification stereomicroscope.

RESULTS

Weibull statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the characteristic strength between Single Bond and Prime & Bond NT dual cure, and between Single Bond and Prime & Bond 2.1. The Weibull parameter (m) was statistically similar among the five groups. Single Bond and Prime & Bond NT showed areas of dentin cohesive failure in most of the specimens. For OptiBond Solo, Prime & Bond NT dual cure and Prime & Bond 2.1 failure was predominantly adhesive.
