Elevated basal cytosolic calcium of endothelial cells influences the post-surgical outcome in diabetic CTS

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-induced neuropathy and ischemia-reperfusion post-surgery prolong carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) pathology, but the effect of T2DM on the prognostic outcome of carpal tunnel (CT) release surgery needs to be investigated. Materials and methods A total of 64 individuals with CTS underwent CT release surgery. HbA1c levels identified their diabetic status. The individual prognostic outcomes were measured by nerve conduction velocity (NCV), amplitude, and latency. Measurement of [Ca²⁺]_c and reactive oxygen species (ROS) from isolated endothelial cells (ECs) revealed the oxidative burden of the normal and diabetic CTS phenotypes. Results CTS individuals with HbA1c > 7 showed decreased NCV (≈22 m/s) and amplitude (≈4.2 mV) with increased latency (≈6 ms), compared to groups with HbA1c ≤ 7. Further to CT release surgery, the reversal of the nerve conduction to normalcy was greatly influenced by the diabetic profile of the individuals. Our results showed elevated basal [Ca²⁺]_c and corresponding high cytosolic ROS in the ECs isolated from individuals with HbA1c > 7 compared to the diabetic and healthy control groups. Conclusion The individuals with diabetic index showed suboptimal neuronal performance pre- and post-CT release surgery. Oxidative stress mediated by high [Ca²⁺]_c and ROS of ECs dissipates to adjoining cells worsening the pathology of the untreated CTS.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in a cat

A diagnosis of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in a cat was established by microbiological and histological means. Clinical signs were general malaise, anorexia and vomition. Significant laboratory findings included a serum glutamicpyruvic transaminase elevation and the presence of urine bilirubin and urobilinogen. Histological examination of liver biopsies revealed numerous varying-sized foci of caseation necrosis containing large numbers of Gram-negative coccobacilli. Bacteriological techniques, treatment and control measures are discussed.

Thallium selenide infrared detector

The application of semiconducting thallium selenide for ir detection is described. A responsivity of 10(6) V/W and NEP of the order of 10(-15) W/ radicalHz with a response time of 3 msec can be obtained by operating the detector at 1.5 K.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis II. Antibodies in lacrimal secretions of cattle naturally or experimentally infected with Moraxella bovis

Preinfection, acute and convalescent phase lacrimal secretions from 20 cattle that had mild to severe keratoconjunctivitis (associated with natural or experimental Moraxella bovis infection) were tested for specific antibody to M. bovis as well as for immunoglobulins, particulary of the A class. The convalescent phase secretions from all four natural cases but from only seven of the 16 experimental cases contained increased amounts of immunoglobulins, predominantly of the A class. Only the secretions from cattle having severe keratoconjunctivitis contained precipitins specific for Moraxella bovis.Therefore, M. bovis specifically stimulates the appearance in tears of immunoglobulins that are important in the age associated, acquired resistance to reinfection with M. bovis.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis I. Experimental production

One or both eyes of 20 calves were inoculated one or more time with variou(s combinations of microorganism (live oor killed Moraxella bovis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, bovine adenovirus, bovine parainfluenza-3 virus and Mycoplasma bovoculi) by conjunctival instillation or direct inoculation of the conjunctivea or cornea. The eyes of all the calves received natural or artificial ultraviolet irradiation. Neither the adenovirus nor parainfluenza-3 virus became established in the eye or produced keratoconjunctivitis. Both M. bovis and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus became established in the bovine eye and produced disease. Subconjunctival or intracorneal inoculation of M. bovis caused a severe disease, simulating natural infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. Only the intracorneal inoculation of mycoplasma produced severe keratoconjunctivits. Eyes that on initial exposure to M. bovis became severly inflamed were more resistant to a second or third exposure to M. bovis, presumably by enhanced local defence mechanisms.
