Ultrasonic Traveling Waves for Near-Wall Positioning of Single Microbubbles in a Flowing Channel

Although microbubbles are used primarily in the medical industry as ultrasonic contrast agents, they can also be manipulated by acoustic waves for targeted drug delivery, sonothrombolysis and sonoporation. Acoustic waves can also potentially remove microbubbles from tubing systems (e.g., in hemodialysis) to prevent the negative effects associated with circulating microbubbles. A deeper understanding of the interactions between the acoustic radiation force, the microbubble and the channel wall could greatly benefit these applications. In this study, single air-filled microbubbles were injected into a flowing (polydimethylsiloxane) channel and monitored by a high-speed camera while passing through a pulsed ultrasonic wave zone (0.5 MHz). This study compared various bubble sizes, flow rates and acoustic pressure amplitudes to better understand the three physical regimes observed: free bubble translation (away from the wall); on-wall translation; and bubble-wall attachment. Comparison with a theoretical model revealed that the acoustic radiation force needs to exceed the combined repulsive forces (shear lift, wall lubrication and repulsive Van der Waal forces) for the dead state of bubble-wall attachment. The bubble dynamics revealed through this investigation provide an opportunity for efficient positioning of microbubbles in a channel flow, for either in vivo manipulation or removal in biological applications.

Nonlinear mixing of non-collinear guided waves at a contact interface

Wave mixing offers several practical benefits relative to harmonic generation for detecting both distributed and localised damage. An analytical model is proposed for predicting the frequency, mode and direction of propagation of the mixed modes arising from the nonlinear mixing of two incident guided-wave modes at an interface exhibiting contact acoustic nonlinearity. These predictions are validated by a finite-element (FE) analysis involving a unilateral contact law that models both clapping and frictional sliding at the interface. This analysis also provides quantitative insights regarding the optimal interaction angle between the incident waves in the case of shear-horizontal SH₀ modes, and the dependence of the mixed-wave amplitude on the load ratio (i.e. ratio of contact stress to normal stress across the interface due to both incident waves). The non-collinear mixing of guided waves is also investigated experimentally for various values of contact stress and incident stress amplitude, demonstrating the existence of mixed waves, as well as showing that interface mixing leads to a higher amplitude mixed wave than that due to the background material nonlinearity. This higher amplitude combined with great flexibility in the choice of incident wave parameters (frequency, mode and direction) makes wave mixing an attractive practical approach for detecting contact acoustic nonlinearity at crack-like defects and interfaces. Experimentally, the maximum value of mixed-wave amplitude is obtained at the same value of contact stress for the various incident stress amplitudes, whereas the FE model shows a maximum at a unique value of the load ratio. This difference may be a consequence of surface roughness, which is not included in the FE model.

Wearable Temperature Sensors with Enhanced Sensitivity by Engineering Microcrack Morphology in PEDOT:PSS-PDMS Sensors

Wearable temperature sensors with high sensitivity, linearity, and flexibility are required to meet the increasing demands for unobtrusive monitoring of temperature changes indicative of the onset of infections and diseases. Herein, we present a new method for engineering highly sensitive and flexible temperature sensors made by sandwiching a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene (PEDOT:PSS) sensing film between two poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrates. Pre-stretching the sensor to a certain strain can create stable microcracks in the sensing layer that bestow high senstivity and linearity. The average length and density of the microcracks, which dictate the sensor's temperature sensitivity, can be engineered by controlling three key processing parameters, incuding (a) pre-stretching strain, (b) sulfuric acid treatment time, and (c) surface roughness of the substrate. For a given acid treatment time and surface roughness condition, the density and average length of the microcracks increase pre-stretching strain. A smooth PDMS substrate tends to yield long and straight cracks in the PEDOT:PSS film, compared to shorter microcracks with higher density on rough surfaces. Crack density can be further increased via sulfuric acid treatment with an optimum duration of approximately 3 h. Prolonged treatment would result in weak adhesion between the PEDOT:PSS film and the PDMS substrate, which in turn reduces the microcrack density but increases the crack length. By optimizing the three design parameters we have designed a high performance PEDOT:PSS-PDMS sensor that provides a combined high temperature sensitivity of 0.042 °C^-1 with an excellent linearity of 0.998 (from 30 to 55 °C), better than the highest temperature sensitivity of PEDOT:PSS based sensors reported in the literature. With a good optical transparency, high temperature sensitivity, excellent linearity, and high flexibility, this microcrack-based sensor is a very promising wearable temperature-sensing solution.

Numerical and experimental study of the nonlinear interaction between a shear wave and a frictional interface

The nonlinear interaction of shear waves with a frictional interface are presented and modeled using simple Coulomb friction. Analytical and finite difference implementations are proposed with both in agreement and showing a unique trend in terms of the generated nonlinearity. A dimensionless parameter ξ is proposed to uniquely quantify the nonlinearity produced. The trends produced in the numerical study are then validated with good agreement experimentally. This is carried out loading an interface between two steel blocks and exciting this interface with different amplitude normal incidence shear waves. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical results, suggesting the simple friction model does a reasonable job of capturing the fundamental physics. The resulting approach offers a potential way to characterize a contacting interface; however, the difficulty in activating that interface may ultimately limit its applicability.
