Computer Tomograph (CT) imaging of mandibular anatomical substrate in animal model restored with nanostructured hydroxyapatite compounds

INTRODUCTION

This study was meant to test a new type of bone graft on an animal model. This material was a nanostructured hydroxyapatite.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

the study was conducted according to Ethic Committee Regulation on animal model (Oryctolagus cuniculus - rabbit) between August and November 2014, at "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest. The animals were tested by using a CT at the level of the mandible before and after using the nanostructured hydroxyapatite.

RESULTS

The animals were CT scanned at 1, 2 and respectively 3 months, noticing a growth of the mandibular bone density. After 3 months, a bone density equal with the density of the healthy bone was noticed.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of the bone graft could be a viable alternative to available materials. The advantage was that bone recovery had a density similar to the density of the healthy bone and the cost of production was low because it was made out of Calcium azotate and monobasic ammonium phosphate.

Recent advances in synthesis, characterization of hydroxyapatite/polyurethane composites and study of their biocompatible properties

The development of engineered biomaterials that mimic bone tissues is a promising research area that benefits from a growing interest. Polymers and polymer-ceramic composites are the principle materials investigated for the development of synthetic bone scaffolds thanks to their proven biocompatibility and biostability. Several polymers have been combined with calcium phosphates (mainly hydroxyapatite) to prepare nanocomposites with improved biocompatible and mechanical properties. Here, we report the hydrothermal synthesis in high pressure conditions of nanostructured composites based on hydroxyapatite and polyurethane functionalized with carboxyl and thiol groups. Cell-material interactions were investigated for potential applications of these new types of composites as coating for orthopedic implants. Physical-chemical and morphological characteristics of hydroxyapatite/polyurethane composites were evaluated for different compositions, showing their dependence on synthesis parameters (pressure, temperature). In vitro experiments, performed to verify if these composites are biocompatible cell culture substrates, showed that they are not toxic and do not affect cell viability.

Specific biofunctional performances of the hydroxyapatite-sodium maleate copolymer hybrid coating nanostructures evaluated by in vitro studies

The nanohybrid structures consisting of hydroxyapatite (HA) and sodium maleate-vinyl acetate copolymer (MP) deposited by Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation (MAPLE) technique on Ti surfaces were investigated for specific biological qualities required in bone implantology. The data from in vitro studies demonstrated that human primary osteoblasts (OBs) firmly adhered to Ti coated with HA-MP as indicated by cytoskeleton and vinculin dynamics. OBs spread onto biomaterial surface and formed groups of cells which during their biosynthetic activity expressed OB phenotype specific markers (collagen and non-collagenous proteins) and underwent controlled proliferation.
