Surgical retention for immediate obturator in maxillectomy patients

Total maxillectomy for patients with malignant lesions will often incapacitate the patient both functionally and aesthetically. An immediate surgical obturator prosthesis would be of utmost importance for patients in these critical situations to aid in deglutition, phonetics, respiration and effectively avoiding various post-surgical complications. This article emphasizes on utilizing circum-zygomatic wiring for retention of the immediate surgical obturator in cases of total maxillectomy or edentulous patients.

Permanent mandibular protostylid: A rare developmental anomaly and its overview

Developmental malformations of the teeth might result in alterations of their size, shape, and structure. An accessory cusp is a developmental alteration to the shape of the teeth and is more commonly found in anterior teeth, and its occurrence in permanent molars is quite rare. Accessory cusps occurring in permanent mandibular molars are termed as protostylids. Although they do not pose any significant problem with respect to the function and occlusion, it is of tremendous importance in forensic odontology. This case report presents a rare finding of protostylid on the permanent mandibular molar, and its clinical implications are illustrated.

Auricular reconstruction is an interdisciplinary approach where multiple specialties play a vital role in the treatment provided to the patient. This article provides a comprehensive interpretation of the process carried out for the fabrication of a custom-made prosthetic conformer for the management of postoperative contraction of a skin graft after ear reconstruction surgery-Brent stage III. The prosthesis is used as a precautionary measure and is simple, effective, and economical.

Prosthodontic management of hemimandibulectomy patients to restore form and function - A case series

Surgical resection of mandible owing to benign, malignant neoplasm, osteoradionecrosis is common. The resection can be total or segmental depending on the lesion. Loss of mandibular continuity causes deviation of remaining mandibular segment towards the resected side and rotation inferiorly due to muscle pull and scar contracture affecting mastication and esthetics. Surgical reconstruction may not be always possible. Prosthetic rehabilitation plays a major role in these patients. This case series describes different types of guiding flange (GF) prosthesis with modifications for three hemimandibulectomy patients at different time interval after surgery. The article details GF prosthesis combined with physiotherapy to correct deviation of mandible thereby improving mastication, esthetics and speech and thus enhancing the quality of life.
