Abstract
Isoetes cangae is a native plant found only in a permanent pond in Serra dos Carajás in the Amazon region. Plant-associated microbial communities are recognized to be responsible for biological processes essential for the health, growth, and even adaptation of plants to environmental stresses. In this sense, the aims of this work were to isolate, identify, and evaluate the properties of endophytic bacteria isolated from I. cangae. The bioprospecting of potentially growth-promoting endophytes required the following steps to be taken: isolation of endophytic colonies, molecular identification by 16S rDNA sequence analysis, and evaluation of the bacterial potential for nitrogen fixation, production of indole acetic acid and siderophores, as well as phosphate solubilization and mineralization. Bacillus sp., Rhizobium sp., Priestia sp., Acinetobacter sp., Rossellomorea sp., Herbaspirillum sp., Heyndrickxia sp., and Metabacillus sp., among other bacterial species, were identified. The isolates showed to be highly promising, evidencing the physiological importance for the plant and having the potential to promote plant growth.

Abstract
The quillwort Isoëtes cangae is a critically endangered species occurring in a single lake in Serra dos Carajás, Eastern Amazon. Low genetic diversity and small effective population sizes (N e) are expected for narrow endemic species (NES). Conservation biology studies centered in a single species show some limitations, but they are still useful considering the limited time and resources available for protection of species at risk of extinction. Here, we evaluated the genetic diversity, population structure, N e, and minimum viable population (MVP) of I. cangae to provide information for effective conservation programs. Our analyses were based on 55 individuals collected from the Amendoim Lake and 35,638 neutral SNPs. Our results indicated a single panmictic population, moderate levels of genetic diversity, and N e in the order of thousands, contrasting the expected for NES. Negative FIS values were also found, suggesting that I. cangae is not under risk of inbreeding depression. Our findings imply that I. cangae contains enough genetic diversity to ensure evolutionary potential and that all individuals should be treated as one demographic unit. These results provide essential information to optimize ex situ conservation efforts and genetic diversity monitoring, which are currently applied to guide I. cangae conservation plans.

Abstract
Abstract: Restingas are sandy areas spread along the Brazilian coast made up of a mosaic of forest and open woodland vegetation adapted to varying conditions of aridity, oligotrophy and salinity. Two vegetation types are very common in southeast Brazilian restingas, open Clusia formations and seasonally dry forest formation. Litter production and nutrient (C and N) turnover were studied comparatively in forest formations and Clusia formations, in vegetation patches with and without Clusia hilariana. The results showed that the breakdown process is extremely retarded in Clusia formations, with or without C. hilariana, leading to C accumulation in the soil. Microbial and soil fauna activity is lower in Clusia formations in comparison to forest formations; patches without Clusia hilariana showed intermediate conditions regarding total matter and carbon loss. Nitrogen loss was lowest in patches without C. hilariana, where soil micro-organisms accumulate N during the decomposition process, such as in the forest. The ratio of lignin in litter and the slow release of N reinforce the importance of the dominant tree Clusia hilariana as a potential key species for organic matter turnover. The accumulation of organic matter under the Clusia formation vegetation may be determinant for the humus richness of some bodies of water in the restinga, demonstrating the importance of this species to the ecosystem.

Abstract
Resumo Jacquinia armillaris é uma espécie que ocorre no litoral nordeste e sudeste do Brasil em formações sujeitas a intenso processo de fragmentação. Para melhor entendimento da ecologia de J. armillaris em seu habitat natural esse trabalho avaliou a biologia reprodutiva dessa espécie na restinga do Parque Estadual Paulo César Vinha, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Por meio da descrição de eventos relacionados à floração, morfologia das flores, receptividade estigmática, sistema de reprodução, viabilidade polínica e comportamento dos visitantes florais, observou-se que Jacquinia armillaris apresenta características da síndrome de cantarofilia e visitação de dois grupos de Coleoptera: Carpophilus sp. (Nitidulidae) e Horistonotus sp. (Elateridae). Os dados também sugerem que a espécie é autocompatível, porém os testes de cruzamento revelam que a espécie depende da polinização promovida pelos visitantes florais. A espécie não apresentou agamospermia e crescimento clonal, o que somado a uma baixa produção de pólen viável, a síndrome de cantarofilia e outros rigores comuns em ambientes de restinga pode resultar em anos com baixa produção de frutos.

Abstract
The biochemical processes linked up to cyclic nucleotides related to the phenomenon of phagocytosis in Biomphalaria glabrata hemocytes were studied. In hemocytes the results suggest the presence of a phagocytic capacity similar to that observed in human cells related to regulation by cyclic adenylate monophosphate (cAMP), but not by cyclic guanylate monophosphate (cGMP). This similarity and differences in the metabolic process of phagocytary capacity between human phagocytary cells and hemocytes could represent an interesting model aimed at studying the phylogenetic evolution of enzymatic complexes.

Abstract
A case of pulmonary coccidioidomycosis from the rural zone of Bertolinia, PI, is reported. The patient, a farm worker, attributed his illness to the dust inhaled while digging a water well during the dry season of the year, some weeks before the onset of the clinical manifestations. The main symptoms of the disease were severe chest pain and moderate fever. The diagnosis was made histopathologically: tissue phase fungal organisms--immature spherules and spherules with endospores--were observed in histological sections of a lung fragment obtained by open chest biopsy. This is the twelfth autochthonous case of coccidioidomycosis found so far in Brazil. All of them involved native inhabitants of the semi-arid part of Northeastern Brazil. The hot and dry environment of the region seems to favor the development of C. immitis in the soil. Humans and animals probably acquire the infection by digging the soil, when they become exposed to the conidium-bearing dust raised by this activity.

Abstract
A case of human disseminated pulmonary adiaspiromycosis is reported. The patient, from Goianésia, GO, was admitted to the Brasilia University Hospital, in November 1992, with wet cough, dyspnea and weight loss--manifestations that had appeared two months before. Prior to admission, he had been treated for a suspected miliary tuberculosis, because a chest roentgenogram had shown a diffuse reticulonodular infiltrate in both lungs. This therapy brought no improvement to the patient status. An open chest biopsy was then performed, and the microscopic examination of the lung tissue revealed the fungal nature of the disease. Ketoconazole, 400mg/day, was started and the patient discharged from the hospital. He was seen again two months later: the respiratory manifestations had disappeared and a new chest roentgenogram showed complete resolution of the pulmonary lesions. The usefulness of ketoconazole is, however, questioned, since, as there is no multiplication of the fungus in the host organism--adiaspiromycosis is believed to be, usually, a self-healing disease--the efficacy of this imidazole derivative against the agent in animal tissues remains to be confirmed.

Abstract
Among the determinant factors in the resistance and susceptibility of Biomphalaria to Schistosoma mansoni, hemocytes play an important role. Aiming at studying S. mansoni/Biomphalaria interactions related to hemocytes, the first step is certainly connected with the standardization of this cell population in uninfected Biomphalaria. In this way, quantification of this cell population in hemolymph, as well as its phagocitary capacity, have been determined for the first time. Furthermore, using susceptible and resistant strains of B. glabrata and B. tenagophila, the hemocytegram and phagocytary capacity of hemocytes after infection with S. mansoni were determined too. Resistant and susceptible strains of B. glabrata (BA and BH, respectively), as well as resistant and susceptible strains of B. tenagophila (TAIM and CF, respectively) were infected with 10 miracidia of the LE and SJ strains of S. mansoni, respectively. These infected snails and respective uninfected controls were assessed in relation to the number of circulating hemocytes and alteration in the phagocytary capacity, by using Zymozan and MTT. Reading was taken by means of a spectrophotometer at 5 hours and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 days after infection. The results showed a decrease in population of the circulating phagocytary cells, 5 hours after infection. One day post-infection, the circulating cells of the susceptible snails showed an increased metabolic activity, but the same event could not be observed in the resistant strains. In the subsequent observation periods, significant differences among the strains studied could not be observed until the end of the experiment.
