Abstract
Knowledge about the Health-related Quality of Life (HR-QoL) after Type A (TA-AAD) and Type B acute aortic dissection (TB-AAD) is still insufficient. Through this systematic review, including 22 studies (16 for TA-AAD and 6 TB-AAD -1998-2023), the entire literature on HR-QoL after surgical and/or endovascular and/or medical interventions has been investigated. In TA-AAD patients, despite overall SF-36 score was similar to the standard population, with > 80 years patients displaying a better emotional domain, the SF-12 was significant lower to controls in physical and mental well-being domains. Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation improved HR-QoL. In TB-AAD, vitality and mental health SF-36 scores improved after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR); long-term QoL was similar in the open surgery group compared to TEVAR. Overall, HR-QoL after AAD seems adequate irrespective of age or sex, except for some specific domains. Physical exercise and cardiac rehabilitation may improve HR-QoL in these patients. Abstract
Delamination in reinforced panels is one of the primary challenges facing the safety and reliability of aerospace structures. This article presents a sensitivity analysis of the fatigue behaviour during the compression of a composite aeronautical stiffened panel experiencing delamination. The main objective is to assess the impact of delamination size and depth on the lifecycle and structural integrity of the panel. Different dimensions and positions of delamination are considered to cover a comprehensive range of damage scenarios. The key feature of this sensitivity analysis is the adoption of a numerical procedure that is mesh- and load-step-independent, ensuring reliable results and providing valuable insight into the criticality of delamination and its impact on the fatigue behaviour during the compression of reinforced aeronautical panels. Sensitivity analyses are essential for enhancing the design process of aerospace structures, thereby contributing to the increased safety and reliability of structural components. In this regard, the use of robust and effective numerical procedures is of crucial significance. This may be seen as the real added value of this paper.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise echocardiography is used for assessment of pulmonary circulation and right ventricular function, but limits of normal and disease-specific changes remain insufficiently established. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to explore the physiological vs pathologic response of the right ventricle and pulmonary circulation to exercise. METHODS A total of 2,228 subjects were enrolled: 375 healthy controls, 40 athletes, 516 patients with cardiovascular risk factors, 17 with pulmonary arterial hypertension, 872 with connective tissue diseases without overt pulmonary hypertension, 113 with left-sided heart disease, 30 with lung disease, and 265 with chronic exposure to high altitude. All subjects underwent resting and exercise echocardiography on a semirecumbent cycle ergometer. All-cause mortality was recorded at follow-up. RESULTS The 5th and 95th percentile of the mean pulmonary artery pressure-cardiac output relationships were 0.2 to 3.5 mm Hg.min/L in healthy subjects without cardiovascular risk factors, and were increased in all patient categories and in high altitude residents. The 5th and 95th percentile of the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion to systolic pulmonary artery pressure ratio at rest were 0.7 to 2.0 mm/mm Hg at rest and 0.5 to 1.5 mm/mm Hg at peak exercise, and were decreased at rest and exercise in all disease categories and in high-altitude residents. An increased all-cause mortality was predicted by a resting tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion to systolic pulmonary artery pressure <0.7 mm/mm Hg and mean pulmonary artery pressure-cardiac output >5 mm Hg.min/L. CONCLUSIONS Exercise echocardiography of the pulmonary circulation and the right ventricle discloses prognostically relevant differences between healthy subjects, athletes, high-altitude residents, and patients with various cardio-respiratory conditions. Abstract
BACKGROUND In acute aortic dissection (AAD) sex heterogeneity reports are not exhaustive and in part even conflicting. AIMS To explore sex differences in clinical features, management, and outcomes among patients with type A AAD. METHODS AND RESULTS A systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature were conducted for studies (2004-2022) reporting type A AAD sex differences. Among the 1938 studies retrieved, 16 (16 069 patients, 7142 women, and 8927 men) fulfilled all eligibility criteria. Data were aggregated used the random-effects model as pooled risk ratio and mean difference. Due to information reported by considered manuscripts, analysis were performed only among surgically treated type A AAD patients. At the time of hospital presentation type A AAD women were older than men but had lower body mass index (BMI), body surface area (BSA), and creatinine plasma levels. Active smoking, bicuspid aortic valve, and previous cardiac surgery were less common in women while diabetes mellitus was more frequent. Furthermore, women experienced more frequently pericardial effusion/cardiac tamponade than men. Interestingly, in-hospital surgical mortality did not differ between sexes [risk ratio (RR), 1.02; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.53-1.99; P = 0.95], whereas 5 (RR 0.94; 95% CI: 0.92-0.97; P < 0.001) and 10-year survival (RR 0.82; 95% CI: 0.74-0.92; P = 0.004) was higher among men. A descriptive analysis of in-hospital outcomes among medically treated type A AAD patients confirmed prohibitive high mortality for both sexes (men 58.6% vs. women 53.8%, P = 0.59). CONCLUSIONS A female sex phenotype appears to be evident in type A AAD implying the need for a personalized management patient approach along with tailored preventive strategies. Abstract
Cardiovascular (CV) diseases (CVD) are a major cause of long-term morbidity and mortality affecting life expectancy amongst cancer survivors. In recent years, because of the possibility of early diagnosis and the increased efficacy of neo-adjuvant and adjuvant systemic treatments (targeting specific molecular pathways), the high percentage of survival from breast cancer led CVD to become the first cause of death among survivors. Therefore, it is mandatory to adopt cardioprotective strategies to minimize CV side effects and CVD in general in breast cancer patients. Cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) is a common group of side effects of chemotherapeutics widely employed in breast cancer (e.g., anthracycline and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 inhibitors). The aim of the present manuscript is to propose a pragmatic multidisciplinary stepwise approach for prevention, early detection, and treatment of cardiotoxicity in patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
Acute heart failure (AHF) is the most frequent cause of unplanned hospital admission in patients of >65 years of age and it is associated with significantly increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Different AHF classification criteria have been proposed, mainly reflecting the clinical heterogeneity of the syndrome. Regardless of the underlying mechanism, peripheral and/or pulmonary congestion is present in the vast majority of cases. Furthermore, a marked reduction in cardiac output with peripheral hypoperfusion may occur in most severe cases. Diagnosis is made on the basis of signs and symptoms, laboratory, and non-invasive tests. After exclusion of reversible causes, AHF therapeutic interventions mainly consist of intravenous (IV) diuretics and/or vasodilators, tailored according to the initial hemodynamic status with the addition of inotropes/vasopressors and mechanical circulatory support if needed. The aim of this review is to discuss current concepts on the diagnosis and management of AHF in order to guide daily clinical practice and to underline the unmet needs. Preventive strategies are also discussed.

Abstract
Humans are estimated to consume several grams per week of nanoplastics (NPs) through exposure to a variety of contamination sources. Nonetheless, the effects of these polymeric particles on living systems are still mostly unknown. Here, by means of CD, NMR and TEM analyses, we describe at an atomic resolution the interaction of ubiquitin with polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs), showing how a hard protein corona is formed. Moreover, we report that in human HeLa cells exposure to PS-NPs leads to a sensible reduction of ubiquitination. Our study overall indicates that PS-NPs cause significant structural effects on ubiquitin, thereby influencing one of the key metabolic processes at the base of cell viability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myocardial mechano-energetic efficiency (MEE) is the capability of the left ventricle (LV) to convert the chemical energy obtained from the cardiac oxidative metabolism into mechanical work. The aim of present study was to establish normal non-invasive MEE and MEEi reference values. METHODS In total, 1168 healthy subjects underwent physical examinations, clinical assessment, and standardized transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) examination. MEE was obtained by TTE as the ratio between stroke volume (SV) and heart rate (HR): MEE = SV/HR [HR expressed in seconds (HR/60)]. Because MEE is highly related to left ventricular mass (LVM), MEE was then divided by LVM with the purpose of obtaining an estimate of energetic expenditure per unit of myocardial mass (i.e., indexed MEE, MEEi, mL/s/g). RESULTS The mean values of MEE and MEEi in the overall population were 61.09 ± 18.19 mL/s; 0.45 ± 0.14, respectively. In a multivariable analysis, gender, body surface area (BSA), diastolic blood pressure, left atrial volume indexed to BSA, E/e' and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) were the independent variables associated with MEE, while age, gender, BSA and TAPSE were the independent variables associated with MEEi. CONCLUSIONS The knowledge of age- and gender-based MEE and MEEi normal values may improve the global assessment of LV cardiac mechanics and serve as a reference to identify phenotypes at high risk of cardiovascular events.

Abstract
Increasing transportation safety can be observed as one of the biggest engineering challenges. This challenge often needs to be combined with the need to deliver engineering solutions that are able to lower the environmental impact of transportation, by reducing fuel consumption. Consequentially, these topics have attracted considerable research efforts. The present work aims to address the previously cited challenges by maximizing the energy absorption capabilities of hybrid aluminum/composite shock absorbers with minimal thickness and mass. This engineering solution makes it possible to lighten vehicles and reduce fuel consumption, without compromising safety, in terms of crashworthiness capabilities. A numerical sensitivity study is presented, where the absorbed energy/mass (AE/m) and the absorbed energy/total panel thickness (AE/Htot) ratios, as a consequence of low-velocity impact simulations performed on six different shock absorbers, are compared. These hybrid shock absorbers have been numerically designed by modifying the core thickness of two basic absorbers’ configurations, characterized, respectively, by a metallic lattice core, intended to be produced through additive manufacturing, and a standard metallic honeycomb core. This work provides interesting information for the development of shock absorbers, which should be further developed with an experimental approach. Indeed, it demonstrates that, by integrating composite skins with a very light core producible, by means of additive manufacturing capabilities, it is possible to design shock absorbers with excellent performance, even for very thin configurations with 6 mm thickness, and to provide a significant increase in AE/m ratios when compared to the respective equal volume standard honeycomb core configurations. This difference between the AE/m ratios of configurations with different core designs increases with the growth in volume. In detail, for configurations with a total thickness of 6 mm, the AE/m increases in additive manufacturing configurations by approximately 93%; for those with a total thickness of 10 mm, the increase is 175%, and, finally, for those with a total thickness of 14 mm, the increase is 220%.

Abstract
Background Recent observations showed that systemic immune changes are detectable in case of breast cancer (BC). In this preliminary study, we investigated routinely measured peripheral blood (PB) parameters for malignant BC cases in comparison to benign breast conditions. Complete blood count, circulating lymphoid subpopulation, and serological carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) levels were considered. Methods A total of 127 female patients affected by malignant (n = 77, mean age = 63 years, min = 36, max = 90) BC at diagnosis (naïve patients) or benign breast conditions (n = 50, mean age = 33 years, min = 18, max = 60) were included in this study. For each patient, complete blood count and lymphoid subpopulations (T-helper, T-cytotoxic, B-, NK-, and NKT-cells) analysis on PB samples were performed. Hormonal receptor status, Ki-67 expression, and serological CEA and CA15-3 levels were assessed in the case of patients with malignant BC via statistical analysis. Results Women with malignant BC disclosed increased circulating T-helper lymphocytes and CD4/CD8 ratio in PB when compared to those affected by benign breast conditions (2.345 vs 1.894, P < .05 Wilcoxon rank-sum test). In the case of malignant BC patients, additive logistic regression method was able to identify malignant BC cases with increased CA15-3 levels (CA15-3 >25 UI/mL) via the hematocrit and neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio values. Moreover, in the case of women with aggressive malignant BC featured by high levels of Ki-67 proliferation marker, an increasing number of correlations were found among blood count parameters and lymphocytes subpopulations by performing a Spearman’s correlation analysis. Conclusions This preliminary study confirms the ability of malignant BC to determine systemic modifications. The stratification of malignant BC cases according to the Ki-67 proliferation marker highlighted increasing detectable alterations in the periphery of women with aggressive BC. The advent of novel and more sensitive biomarkers, as well as deep immunophenotyping technologies, will provide additional insights for describing the relationship between tumor onset and peripheral alterations.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that maternal cholesterol represents an important risk factor for atherosclerotic disease in offspring already during pregnancy, although the underlying mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. Eighteen human fetal aorta samples were collected from the spontaneously aborted fetuses of normal cholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic mothers. Maternal total cholesterol levels were assessed during hospitalization. DNA methylation profiling of the whole SREBF2 gene CpG island was performed (p value <0.05). The Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison between the 2 groups. For the first time, our study revealed that in fetal aortas obtained from hypercholesterolemic mothers, the SREBF2 gene shows 4 significant differentially hypermethylated sites in the 5'UTR-CpG island. This finding indicates that more effective long-term primary cardiovascular prevention programs need to be designed for the offspring of mothers with hypercholesterolemia. Further studies should be conducted to clarify the epigenetic mechanisms underlying the association between early atherogenesis and maternal hypercholesterolemia during pregnancy.

Abstract
Background To date (April 2021), medical device (MD) design approaches have failed to consider the contexts where MDs can be operationalised. Although most of the global population lives and is treated in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMCIs), over 80% of the MD market share is in high-resource settings, which set de facto standards that cannot be taken for granted in lower resource settings. Using a MD designed for high-resource settings in LMICs may hinder its safe and efficient operationalisation. In the literature, many criteria for frameworks to support resilient MD design were presented. However, since the available criteria (as of 2021) are far from being consensual and comprehensive, the aim of this study is to raise awareness about such challenges and to scope experts’ consensus regarding the essentiality of MD design criteria. Results This paper presents a novel application of Delphi study and Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to develop a framework comprising 26 essential criteria, which were evaluated and chosen by international experts coming from different parts of the world. This framework was validated by analysing some MDs presented in the WHO Compendium of innovative health technologies for low-resource settings. Conclusions This novel holistic framework takes into account some domains that are usually underestimated by MDs designers. For this reason, it can be used by experts designing MDs resilient to low-resource settings and it can also assist policymakers and non-governmental organisations in shaping the future of global healthcare. Abstract
BACKGROUND Machine learning algorithms have been drawing attention at the joining of pathology and radiology in prostate cancer research. However, due to their algorithmic learning complexity and the variability of their architecture, there is an ongoing need to analyze their performance. OBJECTIVE This study assesses the source of heterogeneity and the performance of machine learning applied to radiomic, genomic, and clinical biomarkers for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. One research focus of this study was on clearly identifying problems and issues related to the implementation of machine learning in clinical studies. METHODS Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol, 816 titles were identified from the PubMed, Scopus, and OvidSP databases. Studies that used machine learning to detect prostate cancer and provided performance measures were included in our analysis. The quality of the eligible studies was assessed using the QUADAS-2 (quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies-version 2) tool. The hierarchical multivariate model was applied to the pooled data in a meta-analysis. To investigate the heterogeneity among studies, I2 statistics were performed along with visual evaluation of coupled forest plots. Due to the internal heterogeneity among machine learning algorithms, subgroup analysis was carried out to investigate the diagnostic capability of machine learning systems in clinical practice. RESULTS In the final analysis, 37 studies were included, of which 29 entered the meta-analysis pooling. The analysis of machine learning methods to detect prostate cancer reveals the limited usage of the methods and the lack of standards that hinder the implementation of machine learning in clinical applications. CONCLUSIONS The performance of machine learning for diagnosis of prostate cancer was considered satisfactory for several studies investigating the multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and urine biomarkers; however, given the limitations indicated in our study, further studies are warranted to extend the potential use of machine learning to clinical settings. Recommendations on the use of machine learning techniques were also provided to help researchers to design robust studies to facilitate evidence generation from the use of radiomic and genomic biomarkers.

Abstract
Breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers have a major impact on mortality in women. These tumors share hormone-dependent mechanisms involved in female-specific cancers which support tumor growth in a different manner. Integrated computational approaches may allow us to better detect genomic similarities between these different female-specific cancers, helping us to deliver more sophisticated diagnosis and precise treatments. Recently, several initiatives of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) have encouraged integrated analyses of multiple cancers rather than individual tumors. These studies revealed common genetic alterations (driver genes) even in clinically distinct entities such as breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers. In this study, we aimed to identify expression similarity signatures by extracting common genes among TCGA breast (BRCA), ovarian (OV), and uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC) cohorts and infer co-regulatory protein-protein interaction networks that might have a relationship with the estrogen signaling pathway. Thus, we carried out an unsupervised principal component analysis (PCA)-based computational approach, using RNA sequencing data of 2,015 female cancer and 148 normal samples, in order to simultaneously capture the data heterogeneity of intertumors. Firstly, we identified tumor-associated genes from gene expression profiles. Secondly, we investigated the signaling pathways and co-regulatory protein-protein interaction networks underlying these three cancers by leveraging the Ingenuity Pathway Analysis software. In detail, we discovered 1,643 expression similarity signatures (638 downregulated and 1,005 upregulated genes, with respect to normal phenotype), denoted as tumor-associated genes. Through functional genomic analyses, we assessed that these genes were involved in the regulation of cell-cycle-dependent mechanisms, including metaphase kinetochore formation and estrogen-dependent S-phase entry. Furthermore, we generated putative co-regulatory protein-protein interaction networks, based on upstream regulators such as the ERBB2/HER2 gene. Moreover, we provided an ad-hoc bioinformatics workflow with a manageable list of intertumor expression similarity signatures for the three female-specific cancers. The expression similarity signatures identified in this study might uncover potential estrogen-dependent molecular mechanisms promoting carcinogenesis.

Abstract
To compare FDG-PET/unenhanced MRI and FDG-PET/diagnostic CT in detecting infiltration in patients with newly diagnosed Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). The endpoint was equivalence between PET/MRI and PET/CT in correctly defining the revised Ann Arbor staging system. Seventy consecutive patients with classical-HL were prospectively investigated for nodal and extra-nodal involvement during pretreatment staging with same-day PET/CT and PET/MRI. Findings indicative of malignancy with the imaging procedures were regarded as lymphoma infiltration; in case of discrepancy, positive-biopsy and/or response to treatment were evidenced as lymphoma. Sixty of the 70 (86%) patients were evaluable having completed the staging program. Disease staging based on either PET/MRI or PET/CT was correct for 54 of the 60 patients (90% vs. 90%), with difference between proportions of 0.0 (95% CI, -9 to 9%; P=0.034 for the equivalence test). As compared with reference standard, invasion of lymph nodes was identified with PET/MRI in 100% and with PET/CT in 100%, of the spleen with PET/MRI in 66% and PET/CT in 55%, of the lung with PET/MRI in 60% and PET/CT in 100%, of the liver with PET/MRI in 67% and PET/CT in 100%, and of the bone with PET/MRI in 100% and PET/CT in 50%. The only statistically significant difference between PET/MRI and PET/CT was observed in bony infiltration detection rates. For PET/CT, iodinate contrast medium infusions' average was 86 mL, and exposure to ionizing radiation was estimated to be 4-fold higher than PET/MRI. PET/MRI is a promising safe new alternative in the care of patients with HL.

Abstract
Aims Immune endothelial inflammation, underlying coronary heart disease (CHD) related phenotypes, could provide new insight into the pathobiology of the disease. We investigated DNA methylation level of the unique CpG island of HLA-G gene in CHD patients and evaluated the correlation with cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) features. Methods Thirty-two patients that underwent CCTA for suspected CHD were enrolled for this study. Obstructive CHD group included fourteen patients, in which there was a stenosis greater than or equal to 50% in one or more of the major coronary arteries detected; whereas subjects with Calcium (Ca) Score = 0, uninjured coronaries and with no obstructive CHD (no critical stenosis, NCS) were considered as control subjects (n = 18). For both groups, DNA methylation profile of the whole 5’UTR-CpG island of HLA-G was measured. The plasma soluble HLA-G (sHLA-G) levels were detected in all subjects by specific ELISA assay. Statistical analysis was performed using R software. Results For the first time, our study reported that 1) a significant hypomethylation characterized three specific fragments (B, C and F) of the 5’UTR-CpG island (p = 0.05) of HLA-G gene in CHD patients compared to control group; 2) the hypomethylation level of one specific fragment of 161bp (+616/+777) positively correlated with coronary Ca score, a relevant parameter of CCTA (p<0.05) between two groups evaluated and was predictive for disease severity. Conclusions Reduced levels of circulating HLA-G molecules could derive from epigenetic marks. Epigenetics phenomena induce hypomethylation of specific regions into 5'UTR-CpG island of HLA-G gene in CHD patients with obstructive non critical stenosis vs coronary stenosis individuals.

Abstract
In breast cancer studies, combining quantitative radiomic with genomic signatures can help identifying and characterizing radiogenomic phenotypes, in function of molecular receptor status. Biomedical imaging processing lacks standards in radiomic feature normalization methods and neglecting feature normalization can highly bias the overall analysis. This study evaluates the effect of several normalization techniques to predict four clinical phenotypes such as estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and triple negative (TN) status, by quantitative features. The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) radiomic features from 91 T1-weighted Dynamic Contrast Enhancement MRI of invasive breast cancers were investigated in association with breast invasive carcinoma miRNA expression profiling from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Three advanced machine learning techniques (Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Naïve Bayesian) were investigated to distinguish between molecular prognostic indicators and achieved an area under the ROC curve (AUC) values of 86%, 93%, 91%, and 91% for the prediction of ER+ versus ER-, PR+ versus PR-, HER2+ versus HER2-, and triple-negative, respectively. In conclusion, radiomic features enable to discriminate major breast cancer molecular subtypes and may yield a potential imaging biomarker for advancing precision medicine.

Abstract
Wearable inertial sensors have been widely investigated for fall risk assessment and prediction in older adults. However, heterogeneity in published studies in terms of sensor location, task assessed and features extracted is high, making challenging evidence-based design of new studies and/or real-life applications. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to appraise the best available evidence in the field. Namely, we applied established statistical methods for the analysis of categorical data to identify optimal combinations of sensor locations, tasks, and feature categories. We also conducted a meta-analysis on sensor-based features to identify a set of significant features and their pivot values. The results demonstrated that with a walking test, the most effective feature to assess the risk of falling was the velocity with the sensor placed on the shins. Conversely, during quite standing, linear acceleration measured at the lower back was the most effective combination of feature-placement. Similarly, during the sit-to-stand and/or the stand-to-sit tests, linear acceleration measured at the lower back seems to be the most effective feature-placement combination. The meta-analysis demonstrated that four features resulted significantly higher in fallers: the root-mean-square acceleration in the mediolateral direction during quiet standing with eyes closed [Mean Difference (MD): 0.01 g; 95% Confidence Interval (CI95%): 0.006 to 0.014]; the number of steps (MD: 1.638 steps; CI95%: 0.384 to 2.892) and total time (MD: 2.274 seconds; CI95%: 0.531 to 4.017) to complete the timed up and go test; and the step time (MD: 0.053; CI95%: 0.012 to 0.095; p = 0.01) during walking.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) aerogels were prepared by freeze-drying as potential adsorbents for water purification, and the effect of the strategy of crosslinking was investigated by varying the amount of crosslinker (glutaraldehyde) and the sequence of steps for the preparation of the aerogel. Two procedures were compared, in which the crosslinking step was carried out before or after the freeze-drying of the starting CS solution. When crosslinking was postponed after the freeze-drying step, the adsorption capacity towards an anionic dye, such as indigo carmine, considerably increased (up to +45%), reaching values as high as 534.4 ± 30.5 mg g-1. The same crosslinking strategy ensured a comparable improvement also in nanocomposite aerogels containing graphene oxide (GO), which was added to enhance the mechanical strength and provide adsorption capacity towards cationic dyes. Besides possessing good mechanical strength (compressive modulus higher than 1 MPa), the CS/GO aerogels were able to bind also cationic pollutants such as methylene blue. The maximum uptake capacity increased from 4.3 ± 1.6 to 168.6 ± 9.6 mg of cationic dye adsorbed per gram of adsorbent with respect to pristine CS aerogels.

Abstract
Background This paper suggests a method to assess the extent to which ultra-short Heart Rate Variability (HRV) features (less than 5 min) can be considered as valid surrogates of short HRV features (nominally 5 min). Short term HRV analysis has been widely investigated for mental stress assessment, whereas the validity of ultra-short HRV features remains unclear. Therefore, this study proposes a method to explore the extent to which HRV excerpts can be shortened without losing their ability to automatically detect mental stress. Methods ECGs were acquired from 42 healthy subjects during a university examination and resting condition. 23 features were extracted from HRV excerpts of different lengths (i.e., 30 s, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, and 5 min). Significant differences between rest and stress phases were investigated using non-parametric statistical tests at different time-scales. Features extracted from each ultra-short length were compared with the standard short HRV features, assumed as the benchmark, via Spearman’s rank correlation analysis and Bland-Altman plots during rest and stress phases. Using data-driven machine learning approaches, a model aiming to detect mental stress was trained, validated and tested using short HRV features, and assessed on the ultra-short HRV features. Results Six out of 23 ultra-short HRV features (MeanNN, StdNN, MeanHR, StdHR, HF, and SD2) displayed consistency across all of the excerpt lengths (i.e., from 5 to 1 min) and 3 out of those 6 ultra-short HRV features (MeanNN, StdHR, and HF) achieved good performance (accuracy above 88%) when employed in a well-dimensioned automatic classifier. Conclusion This study concluded that 6 ultra-short HRV features are valid surrogates of short HRV features for mental stress investigation. Abstract
Background Approximate entropy (ApEn) and sample entropy (SampEn) have been previously used to quantify the regularity in centre of pressure (COP) time-series in different experimental groups and/or conditions. ApEn and SampEn are very sensitive to their input parameters: m (subseries length), r (tolerance) and N (data length). Yet, the effects of changing those parameters have been scarcely investigated in the analysis of COP time-series. This study aimed to investigate the effects of changing parameters m, r and N on ApEn and SampEn values in COP time-series, as well as the ability of these entropy measures to discriminate between groups. Methods A public dataset of COP time-series was used. ApEn and SampEn were calculated for m = {2, 3, 4, 5}, r = {0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, 0.5} and N = {600, 1200} (30 and 60 s, respectively). Subjects were stratified in young adults (age < 60, n = 85), and older adults (age ≥ 60) with (n = 18) and without (n = 56) falls in the last year. The effects of changing parameters m, r and N on ApEn and SampEn were investigated with a three-way ANOVA. The ability of ApEn and SampEn to discriminate between groups was investigated with a mixed ANOVA (within-subject factors: m, r and N; between-subject factor: group). Specific combinations of m, r and N producing significant differences between groups were identified using the Tukey’s honest significant difference procedure. Results A significant three-way interaction between m, r and N confirmed the sensitivity of ApEn and SampEn to the input parameters. SampEn showed a higher consistency and ability to discriminate between groups than ApEn. Significant differences between groups were mostly observed in longer (N = 1200) COP time-series in the anterior-posterior direction. Those differences were observed for specific combinations of m and r, highlighting the importance of an adequate selection of input parameters. Conclusions Future studies should favour SampEn over ApEn and longer time-series (≥ 60 s) over shorter ones (e.g. 30 s). The use of parameter combinations such as SampEn (m = {4, 5}, r = {0.25, 0.3, 0.35}) is recommended. Abstract
Acute sleep deprivation is known to affect human balance and posture control. However, the effects of variations in sleep quality and pattern over consecutive days have received less attention. This study investigated the associations between day-to-day variations in sleep quality and standing balance in healthy subjects. Twenty volunteers (12 females and 8 males; age: 28.8 ± 5.7 years, body mass index: 23.4 ± 3.4 kg/m2, resting heart rate: 63.1 ± 8.7 bpm) with no history of sleep disorders or balance impairments participated in the study. Sleep and balance were assessed over two consecutive days. Sleep quality variations were assessed using sleep diary, actigraphy and heart rate variability (HRV) measures. Sleep was monitored at home, using an unobtrusive wearable device. Balance was assessed in a gait lab using foot centre of pressure (COP) displacement during quiet standing. Subjects with a day-to-day deterioration in sleep quantity and quality (i.e., decreased duration and increased fragmentation, increased nocturnal activity and decreased HRV) exhibited significant changes in balance (i.e., larger COP area, amplitude and standard deviation). Conversely, subjects with no significant alterations in sleep quantity and quality showed no significant changes in COP displacements. These results confirmed our hypothesis that changes in sleep quality and pattern over consecutive days may affect balance.

Abstract
Ultra-short heart rate variability (HRV) analysis refers to the study of HRV features in excerpts of length <5 min. Ultra-short HRV is widely growing in many healthcare applications for monitoring individual's health and well-being status, especially in combination with wearable sensors, mobile phones, and smart-watches. Long-term (nominally 24 h) and short-term (nominally 5 min) HRV features have been widely investigated, physiologically justified and clear guidelines for analysing HRV in 5 min or 24 h are available. Conversely, the reliability of ultra-short HRV features remains unclear and many investigations have adopted ultra-short HRV analysis without questioning its validity. This is partially due to the lack of accepted algorithms guiding investigators to systematically assess ultra-short HRV reliability. This Letter critically reviewed the existing literature, aiming to identify the most suitable algorithms, and harmonise them to suggest a standard protocol that scholars may use as a reference in future studies. The results of the literature review were surprising, because, among the 29 reviewed papers, only one paper used a rigorous method, whereas the others employed methods that were partially or completely unreliable due to the incorrect use of statistical tests. This Letter provides recommendations on how to assess ultra-short HRV features reliably and proposes an inclusive algorithm that summarises the state-of-the-art knowledge in this area.

Abstract
Mental stress may cause cognitive dysfunctions, cardiovascular disorders and depression. Mental stress detection via short-term Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis has been widely explored in the last years, while ultra-short term (less than 5 minutes) HRV has been not. This study aims to detect mental stress using linear and non-linear HRV features extracted from 3 minutes ECG excerpts recorded from 42 university students, during oral examination (stress) and at rest after a vacation. HRV features were then extracted and analyzed according to the literature using validated software tools. Statistical and data mining analysis were then performed on the extracted HRV features. The best performing machine learning method was the C4.5 tree algorithm, which discriminated between stress and rest with sensitivity, specificity and accuracy rate of 78%, 80% and 79% respectively.

Subjects with cardiovascular disorders (e.g., related to autonomic dysfunctions and postural hypotension) are at higher risk of falling. Autonomic dysfunctions increasing the risk of falling in the short and mid-term could be assessed by Heart Rate Variability (HRV) extracted by electrocardiograph (ECG). We developed three trials for assessing the usefulness of ECG monitoring using wearable devices for: risk assessment of falling in the next few weeks; prevention of imminent falls due to standing hypotension; and fall detection. Statistical and data-mining methods are adopted to develop classification and regression models, validated with the cross-validation approach. The first classifier based on HRV features enabled to identify future fallers among hypertensive patients with an accuracy of 72% (sensitivity: 51.1%, specificity: 80.2%). The regression model to predict falls due to orthostatic dropdown from HRV recorded before standing achieved an overall accuracy of 80% (sensitivity: 92%, specificity: 90%). Finally, the classifier to detect simulated falls using ECG achieved an accuracy of 77.3% (sensitivity: 81.8%, specificity: 72.7%). The evidence from these three studies showed that ECG monitoring and processing could achieve satisfactory performances compared to other system for risk assessment, fall prevention and detection. This is interesting as differently from other technologies actually employed to prevent falls, ECG is recommended for many other pathologies of later life and is more accepted by senior citizens.

Abstract
Falls are a major problem of later life having severe consequences on quality of life and a significant burden in occidental countries. Many technological solutions have been proposed to assess the risk or to predict falls and the majority is based on accelerometers and gyroscopes. However, very little was done for identifying first time fallers, which are very difficult to recognize. This paper presents a metamodel predicting falls using short term Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis acquired at the baseline. About 170 hypertensive patients (age: 72 ± 8 years, 56 female) were investigated, of which 34 fell once in the 3 months after the baseline assessment. This study is focused on hypertensive patients, which were considered as convenient pragmatic sample, as they undergo regular outpatient visits, during which short term Electrocardiogram (ECG) can be easily recorded without significant increase of healthcare costs. For each subject, 11 consecutive excerpts of 5 min each (55 min) were extracted from ECGs recorded between 10:30 and 12:30 and analysed. Linear and nonlinear HRV features were extracted and averaged among the 11 excerpts, which were, then, considered for the statistical and data mining analysis. The best predictive metamodel was based on Multinomial Naïve Bayes, which enabled to predict first-time fallers with sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy rates of 72%, 61%, and 68%, respectively.

Abstract
In yeast the UPF1, UPF2 and UPF3 genes encode three interacting factors involved in translation termination and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). UPF1 plays a central role in both processes. In addition, UPF1 was originally isolated as a multicopy suppressor of mitochondrial splicing deficiency, and its deletion leads to an impairment in respiratory growth. Here, we provide evidence that inactivation of UPF2 or UPF3, like that of UPF1, leads to an impairment in respiratory competence, suggesting that their products, Upf1p, Upf2p and Upf3p, are equivalently involved in mitochondrial biogenesis. In addition, however, we show that only Upf1p acts as a multicopy suppressor of mitochondrial splicing deficiency, and its activity does not require either Upf2p or Upf3p. Mutations in the conserved cysteine- and histidine-rich regions and ATPase and helicase motifs of Upf1p separate the ability of Upf1p to complement the respiratory impairment of a Deltaupf1 strain from its ability to act as a multicopy suppressor of mitochondrial splicing deficiency, indicating that distinct pathways express these phenotypes. In addition, we show that, when overexpressed, Upf1p is not detected within mitochondria, suggesting that its role as multicopy suppressor of mitochondrial splicing deficiency is indirect. Furthermore, we provide evidence that cells overexpressing certain upf1 alleles accumulate a phosphorylated isoform of Upf1p. Altogether, these results indicate that overexpression of Upf1p compensates for mitochondrial splicing deficiency independently of its role in mRNA surveillance, which relies on Upf1p-Upf2p-Upf3p functional interplay.

Abstract
The purpose of this clinical study was to find a relationship between soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary emboli (PE). Clinical diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary emboli is a major dilemma for the clinician. Most existing tests are technician dependent, are expensive, or require sophisticated equipment. Advances in molecular biology will permit investigation of the value of TNF receptor as a test for screening, diagnosis, and evolution of DVT and PE. Forty patients with diagnosis of DVT, documented by real-time ultrasound imaging, were the subject of this clinical study. Five cc of plasma from each patient was studied by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa) for measurement of soluble TNF receptor. Significantly increased concentration of plasma-soluble TNF receptor was present in patients with DVT as opposed to normal individuals. There was a close relationship between plasma concentration of soluble TNF receptor and evaluation of the disease. In this preliminary clinical study, it appears that plasma measurement of soluble TNF receptor could be used as a clinical test for diagnosis of DVT and PE.

Abstract
The two adjacent nuclear genes ISF1 and NAM7 cooperatively participate in mitochondrial functions. It is well known that Cyp1p(Hap1p) activates a number of genes involved in these same functions. We show in this paper that Cyp1p influences the transcriptional regulation of NAM7. In addition, a significant amount of ISF1-NAM7 cotranscript is observed in a cyp1 mutant context. An extensive analysis of the intergenic region which separates the two genes revealed 5' starts of the NAM7 transcripts, additional to those previously mapped. These new 5' starts overlap the 3' ends of ISF1. We propose that NAM7 is under the control of a negative Cyp1p-dependent regulator and that its absence favours a transcriptional read-through which results in the ISF1-NAM7 cotranscript we have identified.

Abstract
The TMS 32010 system for a real-time muscle fatigue monitor is described; it is based on mean frequency shift in the electromyographic signal (EMG). The mean frequency of the EMG is obtained, in real time, from its power spectrum, with a 2 Hz resolution. This is made possible by combining novel hardware and software.
