Optimizing landfill site selection by using land classification maps

Municipal solid waste disposal is a major environmental concern throughout the world. Proper landfill siting involves many environmental, economic, technical, and sociocultural challenges. In this study, a new quantitative method for landfill siting that reduces the number of evaluation criteria, simplifies siting procedures, and enhances the utility of available land evaluation maps was proposed. The method is demonstrated by selecting a suitable landfill site near the city of Marvdasht in Iran. The approach involves two separate stages. First, necessary criteria for preliminary landfill siting using four constraints and eight factors were obtained from a land classification map initially prepared for irrigation purposes. Thereafter, the criteria were standardized using a rating approach and then weighted to obtain a suitability map for landfill siting, with ratings in a 0-1 domain and divided into five suitability classes. Results were almost identical to those obtained with a more traditional environmental landfill siting approach. Because of far fewer evaluation criteria, the proposed weighting method was much easier to implement while producing a more convincing database for landfill siting. The classification map also considered land productivity. In the second stage, the six best alternative sites were evaluated for final landfill siting using four additional criteria. Sensitivity analyses were furthermore conducted to assess the stability of the obtained ranking. Results indicate that the method provides a precise siting procedure that should convince all pertinent stakeholders.

Primary visual cortex neurons that contribute to resolve the aperture problem

It is traditional to believe that neurons in primary visual cortex are sensitive only or principally to stimulation within a spatially restricted receptive field (classical receptive field). It follows from this that they should only be capable of encoding the direction of stimulus movement orthogonal to the local contour, since this is the only information available in their classical receptive field "aperture." This direction is not necessarily the same as the motion of the entire object, as the direction cue within an aperture is ambiguous to the global direction of motion, which can only be derived by integrating with unambiguous components of the object. Recent results, however, show that primary visual cortex neurons can integrate spatially and temporally distributed cues outside the classical receptive field, and so we reexamined whether primary visual cortex neurons suffer the "aperture problem." With the stimulation of an optimally oriented bar drifting across the classical receptive field in different global directions, here we show that a subpopulation of primary visual cortex neurons (25/81) recorded from anesthetized and paralyzed marmosets is capable of integrating informative unambiguous direction cues presented by the bar ends, well outside their classical receptive fields, to encode global motion direction. Although the stimuli within the classical receptive field were identical, their directional responses were significantly modulated according to the global direction of stimulus movement. Hence, some primary visual cortex neurons are not local motion energy filters, but may encode signals that contribute directly to global motion processing.

Effect of Process Variables on Particle Size of Gelatin Microspheres Containing Lactic Acid

Gelatin microspheres containing lactic acid were prepared by a polymerization technique using glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent. Because particle size distribution of microspheres is a vital factor in the characterization of microspheres, the present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of process variables on the microspheres size distribution. It was found that concentration of a gelatin solution is the most important parameter that influences the particle size of microspheres. By using different concentrations of gelatin solution, microspheres with different size ranges were prepared. Both the stirring rate of the system and the volume ratio of aqueous and oil phases exerted a great influence on microsphere-size distribution, whereas, cross-linking time and cross-linker concentration only affected the yield. Lower-phase volume ratios resulted in small uniform microspheres with smooth surfaces and a narrow size range. The effect of emulsifier concentration (span 80), below 1% (w/w, with respect to the weight of the oil phase), on particle size was appreciable. However, at higher concentrations, little effect was observed.

Skeletal growth estimation using radiographic image processing and analysis

An automated knowledge-based vision system for skeletal growth estimation in children is reported in this paper. Images were obtained from hand radiographs of 32 male and 25 female children of age 1-16 yr. Phalanx bones were automatically localized and segmented using hierarchical inferences and active shape models, respectively. A number of shape descriptors were obtained from the segmented bone contour to quantify skeletal growth. From these descriptors, a feature vector was selected for a regression model and a Bayesian estimator. The estimation accuracy was 84% for females and 82% for males. This level of accuracy is comparable to that of expert pediatric radiologists, which suggests that the proposed approach has a potential application in pediatric medicine.
