Abstract
In the ovine reproductive management, a thorough breeding soundness evaluation including specific inspection of the male genital tract represents a valuable tool for assessing the reproductive potential of a selected subject and for diagnosing genital disorders. During examination, accurate inspection on penis and prepuce is necessary, since conditions affecting these structures may hamper regular coitus. Records from 1270 males undergoing breeding soundness evaluation (n = 1232) or admitted for genital disorders to the Section of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (n = 38) of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, were collected, and lesions of penis and prepuce were therefore classified. The data collected revealed that 47/1270 rams examined presented lesions of the penis and prepuce. The most frequent condition was urolithiasis accounting for over 2% of the cases, followed by lack of the urethral process (0.39% incidence), lack of the glans penis and hypospadias (0.23% cases). Moreover, most of the conditions (40%) were observed in animals less than 2 years old, suggesting the importance of a careful breeding soundness evaluation in animals at young age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inappropriate C. difficile testing has adverse consequences for the patient, hospital, and public health. Computerized Clinical Decision Supports (CCDS) in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) may reduce C. difficile test ordering; however, effectiveness of different approaches, ease of use, and best fit into the healthcare providers' (HCP) workflow, are not well understood. METHODS Nine academic and 6 community U.S. hospitals participated in this 2-year cohort study. CCDS (hard- or soft-stop) triggered when duplicate C. difficile test order attempted, or if laxatives were recently received. The primary outcome was the difference in testing rates pre- and post-CCDS interventions, using incident rate ratios (IRR) and mixed effect Poisson regression models. We performed qualitative evaluation (contextual inquiry, interviews, focus groups) based on a human factors model. We identified themes using a codebook with primary- and sub-nodes. RESULTS In 9 hospitals implementing hard-stop CCDS and 4 hospitals implementing soft-stop CCDS, C. difficile testing IRR reduction was 33% (95% CI, 30-36%), and 23% (95% CI 21-25%), respectively. Two hospitals implemented a non-EMR based human intervention with IRR reduction of 21% (95% CI 15-28%). HCPs reported generally favorable experiences, and highlighted time efficiencies such as inclusion of the patients most recent laxative administration on the CCDS. Organizational factors including hierarchical cultures, and communication between HCPs caring for the same patient, impact CCDS acceptance and integration. CONCLUSIONS CCDS reduced unnecessary C. difficile testing and were perceived positively by HCPs when integrated into their workflow, and when displayed relevant patient specific information needed for decision-making.

Abstract
This study aimed to update data on the prevalence of intestinal and lung parasitic infections in owned dogs and cats in Sardinia, Italy. Examinations on faecal samples from 619 dogs and 343 cats routinely referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Sassari were performed between the years of 2011 and 2015. Individual faecal samples were analysed using the Wisconsin technique for copro-microscopic examination and the Baermann technique for the presence of lungworm larvae. Endoparasites were found in 34.9% and 43.4% of examined dogs and cats, respectively. Helminthic infections (21.2% in dogs and 32.6% in cats) occurred more frequently than protozoan infections (17.9% in dogs and 17.8% in cats). In both dogs and cats, the most common parasites were ascarids (12.1% and 15.7%), Cystoisospora spp. (10.2% and 10.8%), Giardia duodenalis (9.4% and 8.5%), and hookworms (7.9% and 5.5%). Evidence of bronchopulmonary nematode infections were found in 0.8% of examined dogs and in 15.8% of examined cats. Age was identified as a risk factor, with animals younger than 6months more frequently infected than older animals, while no significant association was observed for gender. This study demonstrated that endoparasites in owned dogs and cats of Sardinia have considerably high prevalence. Veterinary practitioners and pet owners should be more aware of these infections and should adopt more effective and standardized control practices.

Abstract
Sarcoma arising in the mammary gland is a rare tumor in dogs, and primary liposarcoma with metastatic behavior has never been previously reported among canine mammary tumors. A 14-year old female poodle had a mammary mass diagnosed as pleomorphic liposarcoma. Two years following surgical removal, the tumor recurred in the mammary gland with lymph node metastases. In addition, a sex-cord stromal tumor was identified in the ovary. Immunohistochemistry was performed on both tumors that were positive for oestrogen and progesterone receptors. Moreover, the ovarian tumor was positive for calretinin. This is the first report to the authors' knowledge, of the co-occurrence of a pleomorphic liposarcoma of the mammary gland and an ovarian sex-cord stromal (gonadostromal) tumor in the dog.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Molecules that stabilize protein kinases may be useful in overcoming the deleterious effects of cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of caffeine treatment before vitrification of in vitro matured ovine oocytes on the activity of MPF and MAPK as well as the spontaneous parthenogenetic activation after 24 h culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS Oocytes obtained from slaughterhouse sheep ovaries were in vitro matured for 21 h, incubated for 3 h with or without caffeine and then vitrified. After warming, oocytes were processed for the analysis of chromatin configuration and the evaluation of spontaneous parthenogenetic activation (24 h in vitro culture). Fresh in vitro matured oocytes were used as control. RESULTS Caffeine treatment before vitrification maintained the MPF activity at a level similar to that of fresh oocytes, and reduced the spontaneous parthenogenetic activation in comparison with oocytes that were not-treated with caffeine. CONCLUSION Caffeine treatment prolongs the meiotic arrest of vitrified MII oocytes, likely via its action of stabilizing the MPF level.

Abstract
Fundamental problems of primordial germ cell (PGC) allocation, characterization, lineage restriction, and differentiation have been extensively studied in the mouse. Historically, these cells can be identified using criteria as alkaline phosphatase, but also by the expression of other pluripotency markers suchas OCT4, Nanog, cKIT, SSEA1, SSEA4. Much less is known about PGC inother mammals. The objective ofthis study wasto describe, for the first time, the expression of multiple pluripotency markers in the genital ridges of ovine fetuses evaluating the binding of antibodies for stem cell surface markers (SSEA-1 and EMA-1) and the expression of Oct4, Nanog, and Sox2 genes. Ovine fetuses (24 and 27 days) were collected from slaughtered ewes and transported in a PBS solution at 4°C, to be processed as follows: Immunohistochemistry: 4 foetuses for each age were frozen in OCT TissueTek freezing compound and stored at -80°C. Tissue blocks were cut in 6-μm sections, placed on slides, and immediately prepared for indirect immunofluorescent staining. Section were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde (10 min) and incubated overnight with SSEA-1 (1:100) and EMA-1 (1:50) antibodies (Hybridoma bank). Antibodies were detected with fluorescently-labelled goat anti-mouse secondary antibodies (1:100 dilution; Sigma) in 15% goat serum in DPBS for 1 h at room temperature. After washing, slides were mounted using ProLong antifade mounting medium (Molecular Probes). Gene expression: total RNA was extracted from fetal genital ridge samples with Trizol™ (Invitrogen). Any contaminating DNA was removed with RNase-free DNase I (Invitrogen). First strand cDNA synthesis was performed with SuperScript™ III RNase H-Reverse Transcriptase (Invitrogen) in the presence of RNase inhibitor (Promega). Real Time PCR amplification was performed in a BioRad iCycler™, with Platinum SYBR Green qPCR Super Mix UDG (Invitrogen). The relative quantification of the target genes was calculated with the 2-ddCt method (Livak and Schmittgen 2001 Methods 25, 402-408), after normalization against β-actin expression levels. Fragment identity was confirmed by sequencing. Our results indicate that the cortical region of the genital ridges is positive to stem cell surface markers. A larger number of positive cells was recorded in Day 24 fetuses with respect to Day 27 ones. The SSEA-1 and EMA-1 showed identical expression patterns. Similar levels of Oct4 and Nanog mRNA were detected in the genital ridges at both stages, whereas Sox2 displayed a lower abundance at Day 27. In conclusion, ovine PGC can be recognized by stem cell surface antigens and by the expression of Oct4, Nanog, and Sox2 pluripotency markers, as in mouse. The combined biomolecular and immunohistochemical approach provides a useful tool to follow the ovine PGC during in vitro culture to derive pluripotent stem cells in this species.

Abstract
An instability in the growth of nonperiodic InGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum well samples, ordinarily of high-quality when grown with equal periods of order of half the wavelength of light in the material, leads to a dramatic microscopic, self-organized surface grating. This effect was discovered while growing quantum wells with two unequal barrier lengths arranged in a Fibonacci sequence to form an optical quasicrystal. A laser beam incident normal to the surface of the sample is diffracted into a propeller-shaped pattern. The sample surface has a distinctly cloudy appearance when viewed along one crystal axis but is mirror-like when the sample is rotated 90 degrees. The instability results in a five-fold increase in the absorption linewidth of the heavy-hole exciton transition. Atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the samples.

Abstract
There are various method of reconstruction when chest wall resection is performed for the treatment of tumors of the chest wall. In this case a chest wall resection and reconstruction was performed using an omolateral latissimus dorsi flap, together with Gore-Tex mesh. A 42-year-old woman was diagnosed as having a huge low grade chondrosarcoma and underwent surgical resection which interested the anterior chest wall from the level of the IV to X rib and the right hemidiaphragm. Gore-Tex mesh was fixed to the residual chest wall and an ipsilateral pedicled latissimus dorsi muscle flap was placed on the alloplastic mesh. The patient was discharged from the hospital 17 days postoperatively. The postoperative course was uneventful and the wound was fine.

Abstract
The cryopreservation of oocytes is an open problem as a result of their structural sensitivity to the freezing process. This study examined (i) the survival and meiotic competence of ovine oocytes vitrified at the GV stage with or without cumulus cells; (ii) the viability and functional status of cumulus cells after cryopreservation; (iii) the effect of cytochalasin B treatment before vitrification; (iv) chromatin and spindle organization; (v) the maturation promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activity of vitrified oocytes after in vitro maturation. Sheep oocytes were vitrified at different times during in vitro maturation (0, 2, and 6 h) with (COCs) or without cumulus cells (DOs). After warming and in vitro maturation, oocytes denuded at 0 h culture showed a significantly higher survival and meiotic maturation rate compared to the other groups. Hoechst 33342/propidium iodide double staining of COCs and microinjection of Lucifer Yellow revealed extensive cumulus cell membrane damage and reduced oocyte-cumulus cell communications after vitrification. Cytochalasin B treatment of COCs before vitrification exerted a negative effect on oocyte survival. After in vitro maturation, the number of vitrified oocytes with abnormal spindle and chromatin configuration was significantly higher compared to control oocytes, independently of the presence or absence of cumulus cells. The removal of cumulus cells combined with vitrification significantly decreased the MPF and MAPK levels. This study provides evidence that the removal of cumulus cells before vitrification enhances oocyte survival and meiotic competence, while impairing the activity of important proteins that could affect the developmental competence of oocytes.

Abstract
A planar quadrupole ion trap is proposed. We have demonstrated an extremely large operating range by trapping ions and particles with mass-to-charge ratio ranging from 10(2) to 10(9) at frequencies from 2.8 x 10(6) to 60 Hz at an operating pressure of 1.1 x 10(-4) to 760 Torr, respectively, using a trap radius of r1 = 1 mm. We have also performed mass spectrometry with a resolution of 1.2 amu with mass-to-charge range from 50 to 150. Our geometry is simple enough to be integrated into existing integrated circuits and microelectromechanical system devices, opening up the possibility of many novel hybrid applications and experiments.

Abstract
An array of miniaturized cylindrical quadrupole ion traps, with a radius of 20 microm, is fabricated using silicon micromachining using phosphorus doped polysilicon and silicon dioxide for the purpose of creating a mass spectrometer on a chip. We have operated the array for mass-selective ion ejection and mass analysis using Xe ions at a pressure of 10(-4). The scaling rules for the ion trap in relation to operating pressure, voltage, and frequency are examined.

Abstract
Pluto and its satellite, Charon (discovered in 1978; ref. 1), appear to form a double planet, rather than a hierarchical planet/satellite couple. Charon is about half Pluto's size and about one-eighth its mass. The precise radii of Pluto and Charon have remained uncertain, leading to large uncertainties on their densities. Although stellar occultations by Charon are in principle a powerful way of measuring its size, they are rare, as the satellite subtends less than 0.3 microradians (0.06 arcsec) on the sky. One occultation (in 1980) yielded a lower limit of 600 km for the satellite's radius, which was later refined to 601.5 km (ref. 4). Here we report observations from a multi-station stellar occultation by Charon, which we use to derive a radius, R(C) = 603.6 +/- 1.4 km (1sigma), and a density of rho = 1.71 +/- 0.08 g cm(-3). This occultation also provides upper limits of 110 and 15 (3sigma) nanobar for an atmosphere around Charon, assuming respectively a pure nitrogen or pure methane atmosphere.

Abstract
The acquisition of meiotic competence, in the bitch as in many other mammalian species, is related to the oocyte diameter. This study was designed to determine the effect of okadaic acid (OA), a potent inhibitor of seronine/threonine 1 and 2A phosphatases, on meiotic resumption and progression in canine oocytes with different diameters. In two experiments, healthy cumulus-oocytes complexes were collected from ovaries of bitches at various stages of the estrous cycle and divided, by diameters, into three treatment groups for in vitro maturation: <110 �m, 110-120 �m, and >120 �m. In Experiment 1, oocytes were pre-incubated for 1 h in TCM-199 + 20% estrous canine serum (SCE) + cysteamine + OA (0.5 �M). Then, oocytes were cultured for 48 h in the same medium without OA at 38.5�C, 5% CO2 in air. As a control group, oocytes were matured in vitro under the same conditions but without pre-incubation with OA. In Experiment 2, to determine if the effect of OA is mediated by cumulus cells, >120 �m oocytes were denuded from cumulus cells, incubated with or without OA, and cultured in vitro as previously described. At 48 h, all oocytes were stained and fixed with glycerol-Hoechst 33342 to assess the stage of meiotic maturation. In Experiment 1, OA induced a significantly higher incidence of meiotic resumption in oocytes <110 �m (16/108, 14.8%; P < 0.05) and 110-120 �m (70/130, 53.8%; P < 0.01) as compared to that of oocytes in the <110 �m and 110-120 �m control groups (2/58, 3.4%; 24/82, 29.3%). The percentage of oocytes in the 110-120 �m OA group that underwent in vitro maturation to metaphase II (MII) was significantly higher than in the 110-120 �m control group (18/130, 13.8% vs. 4/82, 4.9%, respectively; P < 0.05). In contrast, smaller oocytes (<110 �m) did not develop to MII with or whitout OA. Meiotic resumption rate of >120 �m OA group (64/78, 82.0%) was similar to the >120 �m control group (56/72, 77.8%), but a significantly higher proportion of the oocytes pre-incubated with OA progressed to MII than did the control oocytes (40/78, 51.3% vs. 12/72, 16.7%, respectively; P < 0.01). Low rates of meiotic resumption were observed in denuded >120-�m oocytes with (7/63, 11.1%) or without OA (7/55, 12.7%) and none of them progressed to MII. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that treatment of fully grown (>120 �m) oocytes with okadaic acid at the onset of in vitro maturation can result in a higher frequency of meiotic maturation than previously reported. Also, we determined that the beneficial effect of okadaic acid was mediated by cumulus cells.

Abstract
Few attempts have been carried out to cryopreserve equine oocytes, and an effective cryopreservation protocol is not defined yet. Studies were conducted to compare the viability of immature and in vitro-matured horse oocytes vitrified by the minimal volume cooling (MVC) cryotop vitrification method (Kuwayama et al. 2005 Reprod. BioMed. Online 11, 300–308). Oocytes were recovered from slaughterhouse ovaries and divided, on the basis of the morphology of cumulus cells, into cumulus-expanded (CE) and cumulus-compacted (CC) oocytes. Groups of CC and CE oocytes were vitrified immediately after recovery [germinal vesicle (GV) stage] or matured in vitro (IVM) and cryopreserved at the MII stage as follows: oocytes were incubated 30 min in TCM-199 + 20% FCS + 10% ethylene glycol (EG) + 10% DMSO, followed by 20 min in TCM-199 + 20% FCS + 20% EG + 20% DMSO + 0.25 M sucrose, loaded in cryotops (2 µL), and plunged into liquid nitrogen. Warming was performed at 38.5°C by washing the oocytes in TCM-199 + 20% FCS with decreasing sucrose concentrations (1.25 M, 0.62 M, 0.31 M). After warming oocytes cryopreserved at the GV stage were matured in vitro for 24 h (CE) or 36 h (CC) in TCM-199 + 10% FCS + FSH, LH each at (0.1 UI/mL) + cysteamine, fixed, and stained with glycerol-Hoechst 33342 to assess nuclear maturation. Oocytes vitrified at the MII stage were in vitro cultured for 2 h to evaluate their morphological survival on the basis of the presence of an intact zona pellucida and membrane. Nonvitrified oocytes undergoing the same maturation protocol were used as controls. Results (Table 1) indicated that the survival rate of oocytes vitrified at the GV stage, after IVM, was similar between CE and CC oocytes (43.6% vs 42.6%). Significantly (P < 0.01) higher numbers of vitrified CE MII oocytes (52.9%) survived, compared to CC (34.8%), after 2-h culture. The percentages of viable MII oocytes from CE and CC GV vitrified oocytes were 43.6% and 40.9% respectively and were comparable to those from vitrified MII oocytes (CE, 52.9%; CC, 34.8%) and control oocytes (CE, 56.4%; CC, 53.3%). In conclusion, the results of this study showed that vitrification by the MCV Cryotop method of horse oocytes at either the GV or the MII stage allows a similar number of viable mature oocytes to be recovered.

Abstract
In the bitch, mechanisms responsible for the meiotic resumption and progression of the oocytes are not known. In order to better understand cellular signals involved in canine oocyte meiosis, the present study was performed to investigate the ability of bitch oocytes to resume meiosis in vitro (1) after culture with okadaic acid (OA), and (2) after cell fusion with bovine MII oocytes. For this purpose oocytes were collected from ovaries of bitches undergoing ovariectomy. Ovaries were sliced repeatedly to release oocytes; only cumulus-oocytes complexes with two or more dense layer of cumulus cells, darkly granulated cytoplasm, and >110 μm in diameter were selected for experiments. In the first experiment, oocytes were pre-incubated for different times (1, 3, 20 h) in TCM 199 + 20% FCS + 0.5 μM or 2 μM OA and thereafter cultured for 48 h in the same medium without OA. A group of oocytes was matured in TCM 199 + 20% FCS for 72 h as control. At the end of culture, oocytes were stained with glycerol-Hoechst 33342 to evaluate meiotic stage. Results indicated that incubation with 2 μM OA for 1, 3, and 20 h determined a significantly higher (P < 0.001) meiotic resumption (GVBD) of canine oocytes compared to that in the control group, but the percentage of oocytes reaching MI and MII did not increase. Similar results were obtained after culture with 0.5 μM OA for 3 and 20 h. However, meiotic progression to MI and MII was significantly improved (P < 0.05) after incubation with 0.5 μM OA for 1 h. In the second experiment canine oocytes at GV stage were fused with MII bovine oocytes matured in vitro. This experiment was designed to test whether the high activity of MPF of MII bovine oocytes was able to determine modification of GV of canine oocytes. The zonae pellucidae from both GV and MII oocytes were removed using 0.1% pronase. Pairs of oocytes (n = 37) were agglutinated in medium containing 250 mg/mL phytohemoagglutinin placed between two electrodes in 0.5% glucose fusion medium, fused with a single pulse of direct current (1.25 KV/cm for 80 ms) and cultured for 2–3 h in TCM 199 + 10% FCS. After culture fused partners (n = 36) were stained with glycerol-Hoechst 33342 and evaluated. Results indicated that the fusion of MII bovine oocytes to GV reporter canine oocytes failed to induce nuclear membrane disassembly, chromatin condensation, or modification of canine nuclei in all of the fused combinations. These data suggest that OA induces meiotic resumption of canine oocytes. However, the cell fusion results seem to indicate that increased levels of MPF are not able to determine cell cycle progression. Furthermore, incubation times and concentration of okadaic acid could be refined to optimize a system for meiotic maturation of bitch oocytes.

Abstract
This work was undertaken in order to examine M-phase promoting factor (MPF) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) activities during meiotic progression of cat oocytes cultured in two different media for two different incubation times and preovulatory cat oocytes that reached MII in vivo. Oocytes recovered from ovaries of ovariectomized cats were cultured either in TCM 199 or SOF for 24 h and 40 h. In vivo matured oocytes were recovered by follicular aspiration from ovaries of domestic cats ovariectomized 24 h to 26 h after hormonal treatment. Results showed that the kinetic of MPF and MAPK activity was similar during meiotic progression of cat oocytes matured in TCM 199 and SOF. After 24 h of incubation, MII oocytes had significantly (p < 0.001) higher MPF and MAPK levels than MII oocytes cultured for 40 h in both culture media. MPF and MAPK activity was significantly (p < 0.01) lower in the oocytes matured in vitro than in those matured in vivo. This study provides evidence that the two different maturation media did not determine differences in MPF and MAPK fluctuations and levels during meiotic progression of cat oocytes and that the time of maturation influenced the level of the two kinases. Moreover, it shows that MPF and MPK activity is higher in in vivo matured oocytes than in in vitro matured oocytes, suggesting a possible incomplete cytoplasmic maturation after culture.

Abstract
The possibility of harvesting cat epididymal spermatozoa from excised testis represents a potentially important tool for preserving valuable genetic material from males that die unexpectedly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate plasma membrane integrity, acrosomal status and in vitro fertilizing capability of epididymal cat sperm after short- and long-term storage at 4°C and after cryopreservation. Spermatozoa were collected by flushing the cauda epididymis and the vasa deferentia removed from adult cats undergoing orchiectomy. Spermatozoa were split into three aliquots: A-fresh, B-frozen, and C-cooled. The A portion was immediately tested on the day of collection (control), the B portion was frozen in pellets in Test Yolk Buffer (TYB) with 8% glycerol, while the C portion was extended in TYB and stored at 4°C for 1 day, 2 days or 7 days. Cat oocytes recovered from minced ovaries were matured for 24h in TCM 199+1UI/mL hCG+0.5UI/mL FSH+0.3% BSA at 38.5°C in 5% CO2. In vitro fertilization (IVF) of in vitro-matured (IVM) oocytes was performed using spermatozoa from portions A, B or C in modified Tyrode’s solution supplemented with 0.6% BSA at 38.5°C in 5% in air. Before IVF, aliquots of sperm samples from the three portions were stained simultaneously with fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled Pisum Sativum agglutinin (FITC-PSA) and propidium iodide to evaluate the percentage of plasma membrane-intact spermatozoa with acrosomes present. At least 200 spermatozoa were counted in duplicate for each sample. After 24h of incubation, to evaluate fertilization rate, the oocytes were stained with aceto-lacmoid. Oocytes with two pronuclei, presumably male and female, were classified as fertilized. The percentages of spermatozoa maintaining plasma membrane integrity and intact acrosomes after 1 day or 2 days of storage at 4°C were 75% and 65%, respectively, and were similar to that of fresh epididymal spermatozoa (78%). However, the percentages of spermatozoa with intact plasma membranes that had intact acrosomes after 7 days of storage at 4°C (52%) or after cryopreservation (48%) were significantly lower (P<0.01, ANOVA) than those of samples stored for 1 or 2 days at 4°C. As shown in the Table, fertilization rates of oocytes inseminated with fresh spermatozoa and spermatozoa stored for 1 or 2 days were similar. In contrast, the fertilization rates of oocytes inseminated with spermatozoa that had been cryopreserved or stored for 7 days were significantly lower than those obtained with spermatozoa used immediately after collection or storage for 1 day. From our results, we suggest that storage of epididymal spermatozoa at 4°C may be a potentially useful method for temporary storage of spermatozoa from endangered cats, and may allow more efficient use and long-distance transport of genetically important germplasm. Abstract
The ability to mature and fertilize oocytes of endangered species may allow us to sustain genetic and global biodiversity. The first objective of this study was to compare the effect of two different culture media and two different incubation times on in vitro maturation (IVM) of domestic cat oocytes. The second objective was to determine the developmental competence of in vitro matured cat oocytes after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with cat spermatozoa. Oocytes recovered from ovaries of ovariectomized cats were cultured either in TCM 199 medium or in synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF), both of which were supplemented with cysteamine, BSA, FSH, LH. Nuclear maturation was assessed after 24 h and 40 h of incubation. Results of IVM showed that the percentage of oocytes reaching MII after 24 h and 40 h of incubation were significantly higher (P<0.001) after culture with SOF (88/110, 80% and 159/192, 82.8%) than TCM 199 (86/129, 66.7% and 58/90, 64.4%). Oocytes (n = 231) matured in vitro in SOF for 24 h were fertilized by ICSI with frozen-thawed epididymal cat spermatozoa. After ICSI, one group of oocytes (n = 129) was activated with ethanol, and a second group (n = 102) was not activated. The developmental competence of all ICSI oocytes was examined after 7 days of in vitro culture. Abstract
Genital tracts from 15 cows with catarrhal and purulent inflammation of the uterus and uterine tubes, cystic hyperplasia of the endometrium, or hydrosalpinx were evaluated by the use of scanning electron microscopy to determine epithelial changes associated with these conditions. Uterine epithelium was revealed to be easily damaged, even in the course of mild inflammation, whereas epithelium of the uterine tube was more resistant.

Abstract
Some hematological and hematochemical parameters in eight herring gulls (Larus argentatus) and in six buzzards (Buteo buteo) were checked. The buzzards were fed with ovine meat exclusively, while the herring gulls were fed with fish and ovine meat. Considerable differences between the two species were noted, particularly as far as the hematological and lipidic parameters are concerned. These differences are probably related to the aquatic life of the herring gull.

Abstract
The histopathology of the uterine and salpingeal epithelium of five cows affected with genital tuberculosis was studied. Both optical and scanning electron microscopy were used and the results were compared. Various forms and degrees of cellular lesions are described, including hypertrophy, flattening, detachment, nuclear protrusions and alterations of the cilia. In the different sites considered (uterus: intercaruncular and caruncular areas; salpinges: isthmus and ampulla) various characteristic lesions were observed.

Abstract
The AA. have carried out researches on the cronological relation between leukocytarian flow and male acceptance. They have used colpocitological tests brought on twice a day on 41 female guinea pigs. On the basis of their results the Authors can state that in this species the period of male acceptance is covered within 14 hours every cycle. In about 50% of subjects the period starts with vaginal opening and probably the mating precedes the leukocytarian flow.

Abstract
Transposition of lengthened omentum to the brain surface, transplantation of an omental graft, or superficial temporal artery--middle cerebral artery anastomosis were performed in dogs prior to transcranial occlusion of the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery at its origin, including the bifurcation of the internal carotid artery. Both omentum and by-pass were able to reduce the changes in cerebral blood flow, somatosensory evoked responses, cerebral water and electrolyte content, consequent to the ischaemic insult. In the experimental conditions adopted in this study, the effect of omental transposition in maintaining high levels of flow throughout the entire occluded hemisphere was more marked compared to that resulting from the other methods, while the onset of ischaemic cerebral oedema was affected approximately at the same degree by all procedures. The results point to the role of the transposed omentum in providing an effective collateral circulation to the ischaemic brain.
