Ball-shaped right atrial mass in renal cell carcinoma: A case report

BACKGROUND

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is an aggressive tumor, with an incidental discovery in most patients. Classic presentation is rare, and it has a high frequency of local and distant metastasis at the time of detection.

CASE SUMMARY

We present a rare case of a 58-year-old man with a ball-shaped thrombus in the right atrium at the time of first incidental identification of RCC in the emergency department. Cardiac metastasis, especially thrombus in the right atrium, is rare. It could either be a bland thrombus or a tumor thrombus, and physicians should consider this potentially fatal complication of RCC early at the time of initial presentation.

CONCLUSION

Ball-shaped lesions in the right atrium are rare, and bland thrombus should be differentiated from tumor thrombus secondary to intracardiac metastasis.

Organocation speciation. I. A comparison of the interactions of methylene blue and paraquat with bentonite and humic acid

A model System composed of bentonite, humic acid (HA), polystyrene sulphonic acid (PSSA), methylene blue (MB), and paraquat was used to characterize the possible interactions of organocations in natural waters. The adsorption and desorption studies with bentonite indicated that the clay had a strong preference for the organocations over alkali and alkaline earth cations. Paraquat saturated the bentonite up to the cation exchange capacity whereas methylene blue did not completely saturate the clay but did form methylene blue aggregates on the clay surface. The aggregates could be readily removed by washing with distilled water. The organocation interactions with the anionic polyelectrolytes were more susceptible to changes in pH or ionic strength. Paraquat could be completely desorbed from HA and PSSA by raising the solution ionic strength to 0.1. Methylene blue could not be completely removed from the humic acid but could be removed from PSSA by raising the ionic strength to 0.1. The studies indicate that a combination of dialysis separations, variation of ionic strength, and spectrophotometric analysis could be used to determine the free paraquat and the bound paraquat susceptible to changes in environmental levels of pH and ionic strength.

Antisporozoite antibodies in mice immunized with irradiation-attenuated Plasmodium berghei sporozoites

Sera from NMRI/NIH mice were tested for the presence of IgM and IgG anti-sporozoite antibodies using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Both IgM and IgG antibody titres were related to the number of immunizations with irradition-attenuated Plasmodium berghei sporozoites, and protection from challenge with subsequent non-attenuated sporozoites correlated with the pre-challenge antibody titre. Sera taken five days following challenge showed marked reductions in antibody titres, except for the group receiving the maximum (four) immunizations. Groups immunized with frozen sporozoites or mosquito tissue antigen developed neither antibodies to sporozoites nor protective immunity; nor did animals infected with parasitized blood. However, sera from mice immunized four times with attenuated sporozoites demonstrated IFA titres to blood-stage antigens. The results show that both IgM and IgG antisporozoite antibodies could be detected in mice immunized with attenuated-sporozoites by IFAT, and that the antibody titres correlated with protective immunity. Cross reaction with blood-stage antigens occurred, but the test should still prove useful.
