The relationship between structure and excited-state properties in polyanilines from geminal-based methods

We employ state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods to study the structure-to-property relationship in polyanilines (PANIs) of different lengths and oxidation states. Specifically, we focus on leucoemeraldine, emeraldine, and pernigraniline in their tetramer and octamer forms. We scrutinize their structural properties, HOMO and LUMO energies, HOMO-LUMO gaps, and vibrational and electronic spectroscopy using various Density Functional Approximations (DFAs). Furthermore, the accuracy of DFAs is assessed by comparing them to experimental and wavefunction-based reference data. We perform large-scale orbital-optimized pair-Coupled Cluster Doubles (oo-pCCD) calculations for ground and electronically excited states and conventional Configuration Interaction Singles (CIS) calculations for electronically excited states in all investigated systems. The EOM-pCCD+S approach with pCCD-optimized orbitals allows us to unambiguously identify charge transfer and local transitions across the investigated PANI systems-an analysis not possible within a delocalized canonical molecular orbital basis obtained, for instance, by DFAs. We show that the low-lying part of the emeraldine and pernigraniline spectrum is dominated by charge transfer excitations and that polymer elongation changes the character of the leading transitions. Furthermore, we augment our study with a quantum informational analysis of orbital correlations in various forms of PANIs.

Platinum complexation with glutamate amino acid: Computational study

In this research work, complex formation of platinum (Pt) metal particle with the glutamate (Glu) amino acid was investigated by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Such application could be very much important regarding the importance of developing metal based biosensors for biological media. To achieve the purpose of this work, two spin numbers of 0 and 1 were considered for Pt for locating separately towards neutral and anionic forms of Glu for Pt / Glu complexes formations. The obtained results of optimization and QTAIM analyses indicated various configurations for different spin numbers of Pt metal particle towards each of neutral and anionic forms of Glu. Existence of covalent bond was observed for most cases in addition to existence of weak van der Waals interactions for the complexes.

Identification of amphetamine as a stimulant drug by pristine and doped C70 fullerenes: a DFT/TDDFT investigation

The density functional theory (DFT) was used to examine the electronic reactivity and sensitivity of a pristine, Si, and Al-doped fullerene C₇₀ with AM drug. AM drug has been shown to be physically absorbed by its N-head on the pristine C₇₀ with an adsorption energy of about - 1.09 kcal/mol and to have no impact on the electric conductivity of that cluster. The atom substitution of Si and Al for C atoms at C₇₀ significantly increases C₇₀ fullerene reactivity, with adsorption energy predictions of approximately - 31.09 and - 45.59 kcal/mol, respectively. The energy difference of LUMO and HOMO, i.e., Eg from C₇₀ fullerene, significantly affects AM drug. Significant LUMO destabilization in Al-C₇₀ by adsorption of the drug AM boosts the electrical conductivity of Al-C₇₀ while generating electric signals that are related to the environmental presence of AM drug. Hence, Al-doped C₇₀ is demonstrated to be an effective electronic AM drug sensor. In contrast to Si-C₇₀ fullerene, significant AM-drug adsorption effects on Fermi and Si-C₇₀ work functions make Si-C₇₀ an Ф-type candidate for AM drug sensor applications. The time-dependent theory of the functional density shows that the AM/Al-C₇₀ complex is steadily situated at a maximum peak of 784.15 nm.

The effect of butyric acid with autogenous omental graft on healing of experimental Achilles tendon injury in rabbits

In this study, the role of local injection of butyric acid (BA) with autogenous omental graft was evaluated in healing of experimental Achilles tendon injury in rabbits. Nine adult male New Zealand rabbits were anesthetized and a partial thickness tenotomy was created on both hindlimbs. In treated group, omental graft was secured in place using BA soaked polygalactin 910 suture. In control group, the graft was sutured without BA. Butyric acid and normal saline were injected daily to treatment and control groups for three days, respectively. Based on the findings, on day 15 after injury, the tendon sections showed that healing rate in BA treated group was higher than that in control group. Furthermore, at days 28 and 45, comparison between BA treated and control groups demonstrated that BA increased the healing rate but with no significance. In summary, results of this study show that application of BA with autogenous omental graft can improve healing process of damaged Achilles tendon.

The Effectiveness of self management program on quality of life in patients with sickle cell disease

BACKGROUND

Sickle cell patients suffer from many physical, psychological, and social problems that can affect their quality of life. To deal with this chronic condition and manage their disease and prevent complications associated with the disease, they must learn skills and behaviours. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self-management programs on quality of life in these patients.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Samples of this quasi-experimental study, which included 69 patients with sickle cell disease referring to the Thalassemia Clinic of Shafa Hospital, were entered into the study by census method. Patients received a self-management program using the 5A model for 12 weeks, while their quality of life before the intervention were assessed at the twelfth week and thirty-sixth week using SF-36 questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, paired t-test, Wilcoxon test, Hotelling's T2, and repeated measures test.

RESULTS

The eight dimensions and the total QoL score after intervention were significantly increased compared to those before the intervention (P<0.001). Repeated measures test showed that the mean score of eight QoL dimensions and the total QoL score decreased in the thirty-sixth week, compared to twelfth week. However, it was significantly enhanced in comparison with the intervention baseline (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Current study revealed the efficacy of self-management interventions on the quality of life in patients with sickle cell disease. Therefore, application of this supportive method could be useful to empower the patients and help them to manage the disease.

The effect of acupressure on sleep quality in hemodialysis patients

OBJECTIVE

Our purpose was to investigate the effects of acupressure on sleep quality in hemodialysis patients.

DESIGN

Randomized clinical trial.

SETTING

The setting of the study was dialysis wards located in two university hospitals (Imam and Golestan) in Ahvaz, Iran.

INTERVENTIONS

48 end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis who scored 5 points or higher on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were enrolled to the study. Acupressure group received acupressure intervention on the Shenmen (He7) and He Gu (Li4) points in the hands and Sanyingjao (sp6) point in the feet for 4 weeks beside routine care and control group received only routine care.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

subjective sleep quality, latency and duration, habitual sleep efficiency; sleep disturbances, daytime functional status, and use of sleeping medications.

RESULTS

The result indicated significant differences between the acupressure group and the control group after intervention in PSQI global scores (p<0.001) and all sleep quality indices between two groups after intervention: subjective sleep quality (p<0.001), sleep latency (p<0.001), sleep duration (p<0.001), sleep efficiency (p=0.006), sleep disturbance (p<0.001), the use of sleeping medication (p=0.028), and daytime dysfunction (p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

This study supports the effectiveness of acupressure in improving sleep quality of end-stage renal disease patients as a noninvasive therapy.
