Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Maca root (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) is a Peruvian plant of the Brassicaceae family. Maca roots are popular food supplements used to treat a variety of ailments described traditionally as enhancing metabolic and health conditions. AIM OF THE STUDY Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been the real scourge globally, affecting more than one-fourth of the global population. MetS causes the development of multi-organ illnesses, including altered blood cholesterol and sugar levels, oxidative stress, and hypertension. This study evaluated maca root total methanolic extract (MTE) as a potential nutraceutical to manage the complications of MetS. MATERIALS AND METHODS After the first 4 weeks of a high-fat high-carbohydrate diet (HFCD), streptozotocin (STZ) was injected in Wistar rats to induce the MetS model. Animals were treated orally with MTE at 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg for 4 weeks compared to metformin at 200 mg/kg after confirmation of diabetes. RESULTS One month of MTE supplementation in HFCD-fed rats remarkably decreased the elevation of blood glucose and lipids, improved liver function and insulin resistance, additionally it successfully restored the state of inflammatory and oxidative stress. The extract was standardized to contain total phenolics equal to 24.45 ± 0.96 μg Gallic acid/mg extract. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that MTE improves MetS by reducing hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress. While also improving beta cell secretory functions, implying that MTE could be used as a balancing drug in the prevention and treatment of metabolic abnormalities linked to type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red ginseng and propolis are well-known antioxidants that have been related to a reduction in oxidative stress. OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the efficiency of red ginseng and propolis, either in powder or as nano-forms against dexamethasone-induced testicular oxidative challenges in adult male albino rats. METHODS Forty rats were divided into 8 equal groups including control negative group that was given vehicle (DMSO), control positive group that was administered dexamethasone in addition to the nano-propolis, nano-ginseng, nano-propolis + dexamethasone, nano ginseng+dexamethasone, propolis+dexamethasone and ginseng + dexamethasone groups. Serum, semen and tissue samples were obtained. RESULTS Lower testosterone levels, higher levels of MDA, and lower levels of total antioxidant capacity in serum, as well as impaired semen quality and a disturbed histopathological picture of both the testis and seminal glands, were all observed as significant negative effects of dexamethasone. These findings were confirmed by lower gene expression profiles of CYP11A1, StAR, HSD-3b, Nrf-2 and ACTB-3b in testicular and seminal gland tissues. The most powerful anti-dexamethasone effects were obtained with either propolis in nanoform or conventional ginseng. CONCLUSION Propolis nano-formulation and ginseng in conventional form could be considered excellent candidates to ameliorate the oxidative stress provoked by dexamethasone, however, neither nano-ginseng nor conventional propolis showed such effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many drugs have been restricted in the treatment of gastric ulcers (GU). So, herbal medicines are now in great demand for their better cultural acceptability, compatibility, and minimal side effects. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the protective efficacy of Aloe vera gel and Geranium robertianum extracts against Aspirin®-induced GU in Wistar rats. METHODS Antioxidant activity and chemical composition of both herbs were analysed. Then, we divided forty female Wistar rats into five groups: a negative control group, a positive control group of Aspirin®-induced GU, and pretreated groups with Aloe Vera, geranium, and Famotidine (reference drug). The locomotor disability, anxiety-like behaviour, and ultrasonography were assessed. Ultimately, scarification of animals to determine gastric juice pH and ulcer index. Then the collection of stomach and liver for histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations, besides tracing the oxidative stress biomarkers and related genes. RESULTS High content of polyphenols was revealed in both extracts. The pretreatment with Aloe vera gel and geranium showed significant antioxidant activities with free radical scavenging and ferric-reducing power (FRAP). Moreover, they improved the stomach architecture and alleviated anxiety-like behaviour and motor deficits. They significantly reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokine (TNF-α), inflammatory, and oxidative stress genes (NF-KB, HO-1, Nrf-2) while increasing the Keap-1 in gastric mucosa. CONCLUSION Data presented a significant protective effect of Aloe vera gel and geranium against Aspirin®-induced GU; they reduced gastric mucosal injury with potential anxiolytic effects through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Therefore, they may be considered promising agents for preventing or treating gastric ulceration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A gastric ulcer is a painful lesion of the gastric mucosa that can be debilitating or even fatal. The effectiveness of several plant extracts in the therapy of this illness has been demonstrated in traditional pharmacopoeias. AIM this study was aimed to see if propolis, ginseng in normal or nano form, and amygdalin might help in preventing the ulcerative effects of absolute ethanol. METHODS Gastroprotective properties of pretreatments before ethanol gavage in rats were compared to omeprazole. The ulcer and stomach parameters (ulcerated regions) were measured (mm2), ulcer inhibition percentage, the stomachs were assessed macroscopically with gastric biopsy histological examinations. RESULTS Amygdalin, normal and nano ginseng, nano propolis followed by propolis all showed great efficacy in protecting the cyto-architecture and function of the gastric mucosa. The number of ulcerated sites was greatly reduced, and the percentage of stomach protection was increased. Histopathological examination had confirmed great protective effects of the nanoformulations followed by amygdalin. The protection and healing rate was completed to about 100% in all tested materials while ulcer areas were still partially unhealed in normal propolis and omeprazole. Quantitative assay of the m-RNA levels Enothelin 1(ET-1), leukotriene4 (LT-4), and caspase 3(Cas-3) genes and Histamine were done and revealed significant up-regulations in ethanol group and the maximum protective effect was reported with ginseng nano, moreover the histamine content was significantly decreased with nano- formulated extracts. CONCLUSION Amygdalin and the nanoformulated ginseng and propolis had exhibited a marked protective effect against the ulcerative toxic effects of ethanol.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium butyrate (SB) is a short-chain fatty acid and a safe antibiotic alternative. During 35 days, this study compared the impact of coated SB (Butirex C4) and lincomycin (Lincomix) on broiler growth, gut health, and litter hygiene in 1200 one-day-old Ross-308 broiler chicks that were randomly assigned into 5-dietary groups with 5-replications each. Groups divided as follows: T1: Basal diet (control), T2: Basal diet with buffered SB (1 kg/ton starter feed, 0.5 kg/ton grower-finisher feeds), T3: Basal diet with 100 g/ton lincomycin, T4: Basal diet with buffered SB (0.5 kg/ton starter feed, 0.25 kg/ton grower-finisher feeds) + 50 g/ton lincomycin, and T5: Basal diet with buffered SB (1 kg/ton starter feed, 0.5 kg/ton grower-finisher feeds) + 50 g/ton lincomycin. Birds were housed in a semi-closed deep litter house, where feed and water were available ad libitum. Results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests. RESULTS Combined dietary supplementation with SB and lincomycin (T4 and T5) significantly enhanced body weights, weight gains, feed conversion ratio, and profitability index. Also, carcasses in T4 and T5 exhibited the highest dressing, breast, thigh, and liver yields. T5 revealed the best blood biochemical indices, while T3 showed significantly elevated liver and kidney function indices. T4 and T5 exhibited the highest expression levels of IGF-1 and TLR4 genes, the greatest villi length of the intestinal mucosa, and the lowest levels of litter moisture and nitrogen. Clostridia perfringens type A alpha-toxin gene was confirmed in birds' caeca, with the lowest clostridial counts defined in T4. CONCLUSIONS Replacing half the dose of lincomycin (50 g/ton) with 0.5 or 1 kg/ton coated SB as a dietary supplement mixture showed the most efficient privileges concerning birds' performance and health.

Abstract
Introduction Penconazole (PEN) is a widely applied triazole fungicide. This study sought to define the efficacy of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) in mitigating PEN-triggered hepatorenal toxicity in rats. Material and Methods Twenty-eight adult male albino Wistar rats were assigned to four groups: a normal control (NC), a PEN group, a NAC group and a PEN+NAC group. Administration of PEN (50 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) every 2 days) and NAC (150 mg/kg b.w., daily) took place via oral gavage for 10 days. Results Effective amelioration by NAC of PEN-induced liver and kidney dysfunction was indicated by a significant reduction in the circulating liver and kidney markers (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, urea and creatinine). Attenuation of PEN-induced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in liver and kidney tissues was evident in a significant reduction in malondialdehyde and enhanced total antioxidant capacity. Moreover, NAC significantly reduced the histopathological alterations and the expression of tumour necrosis factor α in liver and kidney tissue. Furthermore, NAC maintained the messenger RNA levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), haem oxygenase 1, and Kelch-like erythroid cell-derived protein 1 and prevented nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) protein upregulation caused by PEN. Conclusion N-acetyl-1-cysteine protected against PEN-induced hepatorenal oxidative damage and inflammatory response via activation of Nrf2 and inhibition of NF-κB pathways.

Abstract
The use of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) technology in the dairy cattle industry has increased dramatically in recent decades for the production of offspring from genetically superior cows. Yet, its long-term ramifications on adult performance haven't been adequately clarified. Therefore, this study targeted comparing dairy heifers born after the transfer of in vivo-produced embryos (MOET-heifers, n=400) and those born after artificial insemination (AI-heifers, n=340). The performance of MOET-heifers and AI-heifers was compared from birth till completion of the first lactation regarding health, fertility and some lactational performance parameters. The transcript abundance of several genes was also assessed in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBWC). Results showed greater pre-weaning mortalities, greater likelihood of being culled as a nulliparous heifer and younger age at first insemination in AI-heifers (P<0.001). At their first calving, primiparous MOET-heifers experienced a greater (P<0.01) incidence of stillbirth compared to primiparous AI-heifers. In spite of that, primiparous AI-heifers were more likely to be culled due to infertility (P<0.001), took a greater number of inseminations to achieve pregnancy (P<0.01) and displayed a longer first calving interval. There was a similar lactational performance between the two groups. Upregulation of the transcript levels of TAC3, LOC522763, TFF2, SAXO2, CNKSR3, and ALAS2 was interestingly observed in primiparous MOET-heifers, compared to primiparous AI-heifers. In conclusion, MOET-heifers were less likely to be culled during the first year of life, had superior reproductive performance versus AI-heifers during their first lactation and expressed upregulation of genes associated with fertility.

Abstract
The current study evaluated the physiochemical quality and gene expression profile of post-thawed buck semen after supplementation with antioxidants [melatonin (M), L-carnitine (LC), cysteine (Cys), LC+M, M+Cys, LC+Cys, LC+Cys+M] in comparison with the non-treated control group. Physical as well as biochemical characteristics of semen were evaluated following freezing and thawing. Transcript abundance of six selected candidate gens was profile using quantitative real-time PCR. The data demonstrated significant enhancement of post-freezing total motility, progressive motility, percentage of live sperm, CASA parameters, plasma membrane and acrosome integrity in all groups supplemented with Cys, LC, M+Cys, and LC+Cys compared with the control group. The biochemical analysis of semen indicated that semen groups supplemented with LC and LC+Cys, recorded increased levels of GPX and SOD that were coupled with up-regulation of antioxidant genes (SOD1, GPX1, and NRF2) and mitochondrial transcripts (CPT2 and ATP5F1A). Moreover, H2O2 level and DNA fragmentation percentage were reduced compared to other groups. In conclusion, supplementation of Cys alone or in combination with LC positively improved the post-thaw physiochemical properties of rabbit semen through activation of bioenergetics-related mitochondrial genes and cellular antioxidant defense mechanism.

Abstract
Histamine (HIS) is a potent vasodilator that contributes to anaphylactic reactions. Our investigation aims to study the possible toxic impact of repeated oral administration of histamine on the target organs of HIS poisoning (lung & heart) in rats as a model of scombroid poisoning. We used 15 rats that were separated into three groups with 5 rats in each. All rats received the treatments orally for 14 days as follows; (1): distilled water, (2) HIS at a dosage level of 250 mg/kg BWT daily and (3) HIS at a dosage level of 1750 mg/kg BWT weekly. Our results revealed that the consumption of HIS either daily or weekly could cause marked cardiopulmonary toxicity in rats. HIS can trigger inflammatory reactions in the cardiopulmonary tissues and induce oxidative stress damage along with apoptosis of such organs. HIS was markedly increase the MDA levels and decrease the CAT and GSH activity in both lung and heart tissues. The main pathological lesion observed is inflammation which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and demonstrated strong iNOS and TNF-α protein expressions. Cardiac muscles showed extensive degeneration and necrosis and displayed strong casp-3 protein expression. Additionally, all HIS receiving groups noticed marked elevation of the pulmonary transcription levels of Cox2, TNF-α, and IL1β along with substantial elevation of casp-3 and bax genes and downregulation of Bcl2 gene in the cardiac tissue. We concluded that the oral administration of HIS either daily or weekly can induce cardiopulmonary toxicity via the upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines resulting in ROS overgeneration and inducing both oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Abstract
Probiotics are non-pathogenic microorganisms that are potentially important non-antibiotic alternatives. This study aimed to compare novel multi-strain and single-strain Bacillus probiotics and their respective influences on broiler chickens' performance, gut health, litter quality, immune response, and NBN and TLR gene expression. A total of 1200 Arbor-Acres 1-day-old broiler chicks were randomly allocated into three treatments (T1 was a control, T2 was supplemented with a combined Bacillus coagulans (2 × 109 cfu/g) and Bacillus licheniformis (8 × 109 cfu/g) probiotic strains (0.2 kg/ton of feed), and T3 was supplemented with Bacillus licheniformis (3.2 × 109 cfu/g) probiotic (0.5 kg/ton of feed) with eight replicas of each. Supplementing the broiler diet with either the single-strain (T3) or the multi-strain (T2) Bacillus-based probiotic raised the overall birds' body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and European production efficiency factor compared to the control (T1), with a significant enhancement achieved by the multi-strain Bacillus product (P = 0.005). T2 and T3 exhibited significantly improved cholesterol, Alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase levels than the control (P ≤ 0.05). The transcript levels of both NBN and TLR genes were upregulated in the liver in the T2 and T3 groups. The T2 group experienced significant reductions in gut bacterial counts, especially for Clostridia, and recorded the lowest litter moisture and nitrogen. In conclusion, supplementing broiler diets with probiotics of multiple Bacillus strains increased production profitability by promoting bird growth, improving feed intake, enhancing gut mucosa and immune organs, and upregulating genes responsible for immunity. All these inhibit the overgrowth of enteric pathogens and sustain litter quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity of Lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) and the protective effect of rutin alone and in combination with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). MATERIALS AND METHODS Male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: Group 1: was used as a control and received a standard diet and water. Group 2, 3, 4 and 5 were orally administered with LCT (7.6 mg/kg body weight), rutin (200 mg/kg body weight) LCT and rutin (at the same doses as in Group 2 and Group 3), and LCT and a mixture of rutin with β-CD (400 mg/kg body weight), respectively. All experimental animals were orally gavaged 5 days/week for 60 days. RESULTS Our data revealed that LCT-induced liver and kidney injuries were related to the up-regulated expression of TNF-α and down-regulated expression of NRF-2 genes mRNA, whereas these effects were reversed with rutin treatment. LCT-induced oxidative stress altered the histological picture, and the hematological and biochemical parameters. CONCLUSION Treatment with a rutin-β-CD complex had preventive potential against LCT via suppression of oxidative stress and augmentation of the antioxidant defense system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dromedary or one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) is distinctively acclimatized to survive the arid conditions of the desert environment. It has an excellent ability to compete dehydration with substantial tolerance for rapid dehydration. Therefore, it offers an excellent model for studying osmoregulation. Molecular characterization of Na+/K+ ATPase as a central regulator of electrolyte normohemostasis affords a better understanding of this mechanism in camel. Here is the first to resolve the full-length of alpha-1 subunit of sodium pump (ATP1A1) gene with its differential expression in dromedary tissues. RESULTS The nucleotide sequence for the recovered full cDNA of ATP1A1was submitted to the GenBank (NCBI GenBank accession #MW628635) and bioinformatically analyzed. The cDNA sequence was of 3760 bp length with an open reading frame (ORF) of 3066 bp encoding a putative 1021 amino acids polypeptide with a molecular mass of 112696 Da. Blast search analysis revealed the shared high similarity of dromedary ATP1A1gene with other known ATP1A1genes in different species. The comparative analysis of its protein sequence confirmed the high identity with other mammalian ATP1A1 proteins. Further transcriptomic investigation for different organs was performed by real-time PCR to compare its level of expression among different organs. The results confirm a direct function between the ATP1A1 gene expression and the order of vital performance of these organs. The expression of ATP1A1 mRNA in the adrenal gland and brain was significantly higher than that in the other organs. The noticed down expression in camel kidney concomitant with overexpression in the adrenal cortex might interpret how dromedary expels access sodium without water loss with relative high ability to restrain mineralocorticoid-induced sodium retention on drinking salty water. CONCLUSION The results reflect the importance of sodium pump in these organs. Na+/K+ ATPase in the adrenal gland and brain than other organs.

Abstract
Abstract
Background/Introduction
Inflammation is a key feature of calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS) against which there is currently no pharmacological treatment.
Purpose
To verify the hypothesis that interleukin-8 (IL-8), a pro-inflammatory factor involved in arterial calcifications, also promotes the calcification of human aortic valve interstitial cells (hVICs).
Methods
Primary hVICs were isolated from healthy pieces of aortic valves harvested from patients undergoing surgical valve replacement. They were cultured in a pro-calcifying condition (Pi-3.8mM) with or without IL-8 (5 to 50 pg/ml) for up to 21 days. Calcification was analysed by alizarin red staining and calcium content was measured with the o-cresolphthalein complexone method. The viability of hVICs was verified by the MTT assay. The expression of osteogenic (BMP2, OPN, osterix and ALP) and myofibrotic (alpha-SMA, collagen-1, collagen-3 and elastin) markers as well as that of metalloproteases (MMP-2, -9 and -12) was analysed by RT-qPCR. The expression of IL-8 receptors, CXCR-1 and CXCR-2 was evaluated by Western blot and flow cytometry, and the effects of IL-8 were tested in the presence or absence of SCH527123, an antagonist of CXCR-1 and CXCR-2. Finally, the expression of CXCR-1 and -2 and elastin was analysed by immunohistochemistry in the calcified and non-calcified areas of human aortic valve samples. All of these experiments were carried out from valves of at least 5 different donors and a P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results
IL-8 (15 pg/mL) caused a significant ∼2-fold increase in the calcification of hVICs in the Pi condition, compared to the Pi-only condition, without modulation of cell viability. In the presence of Pi, IL-8 exposure significantly stimulated the expression of the transcripts of elastin and MMP-12, an elastase, and reduced that of OPN, a well-known inhibitor of calcification. The effects of IL-8 on hVICs calcification and on the expression of MMP-12, elastin and OPN transcripts were significantly prevented by the addition of SCH527123. In addition, the expression of CXCR-1 and -2 was confirmed in histological samples of human aortic valves. This expression was more pronounced in calcified areas compared to non-calcified areas and co-localized with degraded elastin.
Conclusion
IL-8 promoted the calcification of hVICs in culture. This effect was significantly prevented by antagonizing CXCR-1 and CXCR-2 IL-8 receptors, which we showed for the first time to be expressed by human VICs and aortic valves of patients with CAVS. Further studies are underway to clarify the cellular mechanisms involved.

Abstract
Penconazole (PEN) is a widely used systemic fungicide to treat various fungal diseases in plants but it leaves residues in crops and food products causing serious environmental and health problems. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a precursor of the antioxidant glutathione in the body and exerts prominent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study aimed to explore the mechanistic way of NAC to ameliorate the PEN neurotoxicity in male rats. Twenty-eight male rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 7) and given the treated material via oral gavage for 10 days as the following: Group I (distilled water), Group II (50 mg/kg body weight [bwt] PEN), Group III (200 mg/kg bwt NAC), and Group IV (NAC + PEN). After 10 days all rats were subjected to behavioral assessment and then euthanized to collect brain tissues to perform oxidative stress, molecular studies, and pathological examination. Our results revealed that PEN exhibits neurobehavioral toxicity manifested by alteration in the forced swim test, elevated plus maze test, and Y-maze test. There were marked elevations in malondialdehyde levels with reduction in total antioxidant capacity levels, upregulation of messenger RNA levels of bax, caspase 3, and caspase 9 genes with downregulation of bcl2 genes. In addition, brain sections showed marked histopathological alteration in the cerebrum and cerebellum with strong bax and inducible nitric oxide synthetase protein expression. On the contrary, cotreatment of rats with NAC had the ability to improve all the abovementioned neurotoxic parameters. The present study can conclude that NAC has a neuroprotective effect against PEN-induced neurotoxicity via its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic effect. We recommend using NAC as a preventive and therapeutic agent for a wide variety of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders.

Abstract
Introduction ECT is a potentially life-saving treatment for patients with severe or treatment resistant depression. Cognitive function disturbances following ECT are generally transient, but could be of longer duration in some cases Objectives To assess the cognitive side effects in patients with affective disorders treated with a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Methods Cognitive functions of patients who undergo ECT was assessed prior to start of treatment, midway of the course of treatment and after end of the course of treatment using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). We did a retrospective analysis of MoCA scores of 15 patients who received bilateral ECT in 2017-2018. In order to assess the efficacy of ECT in the treatment of their illness, we did a retrospective analysis of Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) scores of 18 patients who received bilateral ECT in 2017-2018 Results Only 7% of the patients who underwent ECT in our sample did have significant cognitive decline as per their MoCA scores. 28% of patients achieved complete remission in their depressive symptomes. 22% of patients continued on maintenance treatment. 95% of patients showed significant improvement in their symptoms following treatment with ECT where there symptoms reduced to either mild or minimal depressive symptoms. Conclusions Cognitive side effect was not a significant side effect in our sample of patients. We did see an improvement in cognitive function in a significant number of the sample of patients as they progressed with treatment, which coincided with improvement in their affective symptoms.

Abstract
Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a debilitating condition affecting the skin and mucous membranes that is characterised by frequent ulceration and blistering on trivial trauma. In EBS, oral cavity mucosal injuries lead to a high propensity for developing squamous cell carcinomas. Locally advanced tongue carcinoma arising in this background presents a challenging therapeutic conundrum. To our knowledge, this is the first case of aggressive locally advanced tongue carcinoma that has developed sporadically in a patient with EBS and no family history. Routine screening of oral mucosal lesions will lead to early detection and timely management of this debilitating condition.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most common heart valve disease among adults. It is a progressive disease whose final step leads to severe aortic stenosis (AS). Pharmacotherapeutic strategies aimed to limit the progression of valve leaflet calcification could be beneficial to slow-down the CAVD progression and to preserve left ventricular function. Several recent clinical studies demonstrated that lower serum magnesium (Mg) level is associated with vascular calcification. Whether serum magnesium is a determinant of aortic calcific stenosis progression remains unkwown.
Methods
In an ongoing prospective cohort of AS patients (COFRASA/GENERAC) we studied the association between serum Mg with the aortic valve calcification prevalence and progression. Serum Mg was measured at baseline in both its ionized (iMg) and total (tMg) forms. AS stenosis severity was evaluated at baseline and yearly thereafter using mean pressure gradient (MPG), the aortic valve area indexed to body surface (AVAi) assessed by echocardiography and the degree of aortic valve calcification (AVC) assessed by computed tomography. Annual progression was calculated as: (final measurement − baseline measurement)/follow-up duration.
Results
We enrolled 356 patients (73.1±10 years, 73% men), the mean follow-up duration was 2.5±2 years. There was a highly significant correlation between iMg and t Mg concentrations values (r=0.85, p<0.0001). Approximately 37% and 25% of patients have respectively iMg values ≤0.45 mmol/L (normal range 0.45–0.60 mmol/L) and t Mg ≤0.80 mmol/L (normal range 0.80–0.95 mmol/L). At baseline, lower i Mg and t Mg were significantly associated with sex, diabètes, lower heamoglobin and hypertension but not with AVC neither with MPG or AVAi. After mean follow-up of 2.5±2 years, the annual mean Log AVC progression was significantly greater (p=0.01) in patients with values of iMg ≤0.45 mmol/L (2,04±0.73) as compared to patients with iMg >0,45 mmol/L (1.78±0.94). Annual Mean MGP and AVAi also progressed greater in patients with low iMg but without reaching a significant level. Similar association was not found with tMg. In multivariate analysis, iMg remained significantly associated with the progression of AVC (odds ratio per 0.1 mmol/L increment [95% confidence interval] = 0.36 [0.15–0.83]; p=0.015) independently of age, tMg, glucose, type 2 diabetes, Tobacco use, baseline AVC, MPG and AVAi.
Conclusion
In a prospective cohort of asymptomatic patients with a wide range of AS severity, low serum ionized Mg but not low total Mg was independently associated with AVC progression.

Abstract
Biodegradable, antimicrobial, and semiconducting cellulosic composite was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of polyaniline in the presence of cellulose. The cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CFO-NPs) were added during the polymerization process to acquire this composite magnetic property. The CFO-NPs were prepared by sol-gel method with average particles size less than 50 nm. The nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX). In addition, their magnetic, dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and conductivity behaviors were studied. The magnetization (Ms) and conductivity increased up to 3.7 emu/g and 3.5 × 10-3 S/cm, respectively, with increasing CFO-NPs content. The prepared electromagnetic nanocomposite exhibits highly efficient biodegradability and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activity increased with increasing CFO-NPs while the biodegradability decreased.

Abstract
CYP2J2 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily. It had been described in different mammalian species; however, no studies have described this gene in Camelus dromedarius. CYP2J2 is an epoxygenase enzyme which oxidizes various fatty acids, mainly arachidonic acid, via NADPH-dependent epoxidation to generate epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs). It is a multi-functional enzyme that plays crucial roles in inflammation, cancer, drug metabolism, and embryo development. It controls the water re-absorption in the kidney and maintains the blood pressure and glucose homeostasis. This study is considered the first report investigating the differential expression profiles of the CYP2J2 mRNA and protein in the liver, heart, and kidney of Camelus dromedarius. A total of 30 samples were used to determine the expression of both CYP2J2 mRNA and protein using qRT-PCR and western blotting methods, respectively. The mRNA level of CYP2J2 was significantly elevated in the liver compared to that in the heart and kidney. The tissue distribution of the CYP2J2 protein was coherent to its transcript level in the kidney, but not in the liver and heart samples. The difference between the CYP2J2 mRNA and protein distributions in the three studied organs may be attributed to the mechanism by which the CYP2J2 might be involved in the adaptability of the camel to the arid environment.

Abstract
The BTK (Bruton's tyrosine kinase) inhibitor ibrutinib is associated with an increased risk of bleeding. A previous study reported defects in collagen- and adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-dependent platelet responses when ibrutinib was added ex vivo to patient samples. Whereas the collagen defect is expected given the central role of BTK in glycoprotein VI signaling, the ADP defect lacks a mechanistic explanation. In order to determine the real-life consequences of BTK platelet blockade, we performed light transmission aggregometry in 23 patients receiving ibrutinib treatment. All patients had reductions in collagen-mediated platelet aggregation, with a significant association between the degree of inhibition and the occurrence of clinical bleeding or bruising (P=0.044). This collagen defect was reversible on drug cessation. In contrast to the previous ex vivo report, we found no in vivo ADP defects in subjects receiving standard doses of ibrutinib. These results establish platelet light transmission aggregometry as a method for gauging, at least qualitatively, the severity of platelet impairment in patients receiving ibrutinib treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemic and necrotic damages are complications of digestive diseases and require emergency management. Nevertheless, the decision to surgically manage could be delayed because of no sufficiently preoperative accurate marker of ischemia diagnosis, extension, and prognosis. METHODS The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels for diagnosing intestinal necrotic damages, their extension, and their prognosis in patients with ischemic disease including ischemic colitis and mesenteric infarction by a gray zone approach. Between January 2007 to June 2014, 128 patients with ischemic colitis and mesenteric infarction (codes K55.0 and K51.9) were operated, for whom data on PCT were available. We perform a retrospective, multicenter review of their medical records. Patients were divided into subgroups: ischemia (ID group) versus necrosis (ND group); the extension [focal (FD) vs. extended (ED)] and the vital status [deceased (D) vs. alive (A)]. RESULTS PCT levels were higher in the ND (n = 94; p = 0.009); ED (n = 100; p = 0.02); and D (n = 70; p = 0.0003) groups. With a gray zone approach, the predictive thresholds were (i) for necrosis 2.473 ng/mL, (ii) for extension 3.884 ng/mL, and (iii) for mortality 7.87 ng/mL. CONCLUSION In our population, PCT could be used as a marker of necrosis; especially in case of extended damages and reflects the patient's prognosis.

Abstract
CONTEXT Recent data indicate that the secreted glycoprotein sclerostin may be involved in vascular calcification (VC). OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to establish whether serum sclerostin levels are associated with VC in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. SETTING The study was conducted with ambulatory care. PATIENTS We compared 75 RA patients with 75 age- and gender-matched control participants. INTERVENTION Coronary artery calcification (CAC) and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) scores were evaluated by computed tomography. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Serum sclerostin levels (determined with an ELISA) were assessed. A statistical analysis was performed to identify the determinants of serum sclerostin and VC. RESULTS AAC and CAC were more prevalent and more severe in patients with RA than in controls. Higher levels of AAC (P = .02) and a higher lumbar bone mineral density (BMD; P = .03) were identified as independent determinants of higher serum sclerostin levels in RA patients, whereas male gender (P = .03), higher lumbar BMD (P < .0001), and low estimated glomerular rate (P < .001) were identified as determinants in controls. In RA patients, a multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that older age [P < .01, with an odds ratio (OR) per year 1.10] and male gender (P = .02, OR 6.79) were independent determinants of CAC and that older age (P < .001, OR 1.16) were independent determinants of AAC. In controls, the independent determinants were older age (P < .01, OR 1.19), hypertension (P < .01, OR 7.31), and lumbar BMD (P = .03, OR per 30 mg/cm(2) increment of 1.14) for CAC and older age (P = .01, OR 1.11) for AAC. CONCLUSIONS Serum sclerostin levels were significantly and independently associated with AAC in RA patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Osteolytic bone destruction is a major clinical problem in multiple myeloma patients. Osteoclasts can differentiate in vitro from bone marrow-resident monocyte progenitors, such as common monocyte progenitors, as well as circulating monocytes. Various types of monocytes, including osteoclast precursors, appear to circulate systemically. METHODS We investigated the possibility of demonstrating, by in vitro differentiation and flow cytometry, a circulating osteoclast precursor population in multiple myeloma (MM) patients by studying the distribution of CD14(+/++) CD11b(+) CD51/61(+) and CD14(+/++) CD16(+/-) populations. RESULTS Under short-term in vitro osteoclastic differentiation conditions, almost all CD14 monocytes acquired CD51/61 and CD16 expression. Flow cytometry studies failed to demonstrate a statistically significant increase in circulating CD14(+/++) CD11b(+) CD51/61(+) populations in 20 MM patients with osteolytic lesions. However, the minor circulating CD14(+/++) CD16(+) fraction was significantly increased in MM patients compared with healthy volunteers (109.3 ± 63.1/mm(3) vs. 65.3 ± 34.9/mm(3) ; P = 0.005), but with no correlation with markers of tumour burden. The CD14(+/++) CD16(+) to CD14(+/++) CD16(-) ratio was higher in MM patients. CONCLUSION The circulating CD14(+/++) CD11b(+) CD51/61(+) fraction was not correlated with bone lesions in MM patients. However, CD14(+/++) CD16(+) monocytes may be a candidate marker. A larger study must be conducted to confirm these promising results for the diagnosis and follow-up of MM patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone mineral density (BMD) loss is poorly defined in lymphoma patients. The aim of this study was to measure the extent of BMD loss in newly diagnosed lymphoma patients receiving chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a prospective, single-center study conducted in patients aged≥18 years with previously confirmed lymphoma treated by chemotherapy. Patients with low baseline BMD defined as Z/T-score less than or equal to -2.5 and/or history of osteoporotic fractures were excluded. BMD was measured at baseline before initiating chemotherapy and 1 year later. Predictive factors of BMD loss were investigated. RESULTS Forty-one lymphoma patients (31 males and 10 females) receiving chemotherapy were enrolled. The median age at diagnosis was 59 (range: 19-86) years. Histological subtypes were predominantly diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (58%), mostly stage III-IV (54%). All patients received chemotherapy and 22% of patients received second-line treatment due to relapse or progressive disease. Thirty-two patients were evaluable at 1 year. The mean BMD changes were: -2.7%±3.9% for lumbar spine (P<0.001), -2.2%±7.6% for femoral neck (P<0.01) and -2.6%±4.5% for total hip (P<0.0001). In multivariate analysis, predictive factors of BMD loss at baseline were (i) at lumbar spine: female gender (P=0.01), higher lactate dehydrogenase level (P=0.04) and lower creatinine clearance (P=0.01); (ii) at total hip: lower albumin (P=0.01), higher corrected serum calcium (P<0.01), lower alkaline phosphatase (AP) (P<0.01) and autologous stem cell transplant (P=0.03); and (iii) at femoral neck: higher corrected serum calcium (P=0.02) and lower bone AP (P=0.01). CONCLUSION Adult patients with known lymphoma receiving chemotherapy experienced significant BMD loss at 1 year.

Abstract
Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. Excess cardiovascular mortality in RA patients cannot be fully explained by conventional cardiovascular risk factors. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent progress concerning the prevalence and pathophysiological aspects of vascular calcification in RA. RA patients have early-onset diffuse calcification involving multiple vascular beds compared to age and sex-matched controls. Pathogenesis of vascular calcification in RA patients is not fully understood, but specific mediators such as proinflammatory cytokines and not global inflammation could be involved. The possible link between osteoporosis and vascular calcification in RA will not be discussed. Finally, potential targets to reduce vascular calcification in RA will be discussed.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We analyzed the relationship between aortic calcification and two osteoporotic parameters (bone mineral density (BMD) and incident osteoporotic fractures) in 667 ambulatory, elderly women from the Epidemiology of Osteoporosis (EPIDOS) cohort (mean age, 80 years; range, 72-94 years). We did not find any correlation between the aortic calcification score and BMD or osteoporotic fractures. INTRODUCTION The aging process is associated with osteoporosis and aortic calcification; conditions which may have similar disease mechanisms. However, the relationship between these two settings remains to be elucidated. We analyzed the relationship between aortic calcification and osteoporotic parameters (BMD and incident osteoporotic fractures) in a cohort of ambulatory, elderly women. METHODS The study included 667 ambulatory women from the EPIDOS cohort (mean age, 80 years; age range, 72-94 years). The baseline examination included bone investigations, a clinical and functional examination, and a comprehensive questionnaire on health status and lifestyle. Semiquantitative methods were used to determine the abdominal aortic calcification score on baseline radiographs. Incident fractures were recorded via postal questionnaires issued every 4 months for about 4 years. RESULTS Five hundred three women (75%) had aortic calcification. The mean aortic calcification score was 5.5 (median, 4). During the follow-up period, 186 (28%) women reported one or more incident osteoporotic fractures. We did not find any correlation between the aortic calcification score on one hand and the BMD or the occurrence of incident osteoporotic fractures on the other. Only age and systolic blood pressure were found to be independently associated with the aortic calcification score. Osteoporotic fractures were independently associated with age and BMD. CONCLUSIONS Osteoporosis and aortic calcification appear to be independent processes in a cohort of ambulatory, elderly women. However, potential confounding factors may be present and prospective studies are needed to investigate this situation further.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We sought to explore whether the simplified Selvester QRS scoring system could predict ST segment resolution in patients with first acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction who receive pharmacological reperfusion therapy. METHODS We enrolled 60 consecutive patients admitted to the critical care unit with the diagnosis of first acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction presenting within 24 hours from symptom onset, and eligible for reperfusion therapy. All patients received streptokinase in the usual dose regimen. Patients underwent resting high-quality 12-lead electrocardiogram recordings to calculate the modified QRS score and estimate the sum of ST segment elevation before (STE1) and 90 minutes after (STE2) streptokinase. The difference between STE1 and STE2 was then measured and accepted as the sum of ST segment resolution, expressed as SigmaSTR. Patients were classified into two groups: those with SigmaSTR > or = 50% of STE1 (the resolution group) and those with SigmaSTR < 50% (the non-resolution group). RESULTS The mean QRS score was significantly lower in the resolution group compared to the non-resolution group (2.88 +/- 1.34 vs 5.93 +/- 1.56, respectively, p < 0.001). There was a highly significant negative correlation between QRS score and SSTR with a correlation coefficient r = -0.76. Using a cut-off value of > or = 4, the QRS score had a sensitivity of 93%, specificity of 72%, positive and negative predictive values of 74% and 92% respectively, for predicting SigmaSTR < 50%. CONCLUSIONS The Selvester QRS score can reliably predict adequate ST segment resolution in patients with first acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction receiving fibrinolytic therapy, with a high sensitivity and an acceptable specificity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis C virus (HCV) recurrence after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) represents a challenging issue due to universal viral recurrence and invasion into the graft, although the incidence of histological recurrence, risk factors, and survival rates are still controversial. PATIENTS AND METHODS Recurrence of HCV was studied in 38 of 53 adult patients who underwent LDLT. RESULTS Recipient and graft survivals were 86.6% at the end of the follow-up which was comparable to literature reports for deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT). Clinical HCV recurrence was observed in 10/38 patients (26.3%). Four patients developed mild fibrosis with a mean fibrosis score of 0.6 and mean grade of histological activity index (HAI) of 7.1. None of the recipients developed allograft cirrhosis during the mean follow-up period of 16 +/- 8.18 months (range, 4-35 months). Estimated and actual graft volumes were negatively correlated with the incidence and early clinical HCV recurrence. None of the other risk factors were significantly correlated with clinical HCV recurrence: gender, donor and recipient ages, pretransplantation Child-Pugh or model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores, pre- and postoperative viremia, immunosuppressive drugs, pulse steroid therapy, and preoperative anti-HBc status. CONCLUSIONS Postoperative patient and graft survival rates for HCV (genotype 4)-related cirrhosis were more or less comparable to DDLT reported in the literature. Clinical HCV recurrence after LDLT in our study was low. Small graft volume was a significant risk factor for HCV recurrence. A longer follow-up and a larger number of patients are required to clarify these issues.

Abstract
Whether a prey population goes extinct or adapts in response to an invading predator may depend on the number of contiguous populations that experience increased predation. We created invaded snail populations by building shelters for predatory shore crabs on a rocky intertidal bench. The crabs preyed selectively on thin-shelled snails tethered next to the shelters but did not prey on those more than 2 m away. This caused strong directional selection for increased shell thickness in populations close to the shelters but did not change selection in those farther away. The field experiment was used to parameterize a new individual-based quantitative genetic model that included demography. In the model a detectable step cline in shell thickness evolved rapidly even though the region of increased predation was shorter than Slatkin's characteristic length. The cline's step size in the model was similar to that measured in the field 10 years after the experiment began.
