Abstract
To investigate the effects of quercetin on cell viability and apoptosis in meningioma cells and to determine the underlying molecular mechanism. HBL-52 meningioma cells were treated with quercetin at doses of 1, 5, 10, 20, and 40 ng/mL for 24, 36 and 48 h, and cell viability was assessed using the Cell Counting kit-8 (CCK-8) test. Apoptosis was determined by flow cytometry. Bax, Bcl-2, and IGFBP5 protein expression was assessed by western blot, and IGFBP5 and miR-197 mRNA levels were measured using quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). The interaction between miR-197 and IGFBP5 was verified by dual luciferase assay. Quercetin reduces viability and proliferation and increases apoptosis in HBL-52 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Quercetin treatment also decreases Bcl-2 and increases Bax protein expression, and increases miR-197 mRNA while reducing IGFBP5 mRNA expression. A dual luciferase assay showed that miR-197 interacts directly with binding sites in the 3'untranslated region of IGFBP5, and that miR-197 overexpression reduced IGFBP5 expression. Quercetin may reduce meningioma cell proliferation and increase apoptosis by activating the miR-197/IGFBP5 cascade and regulating Bcl-2/Bax.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of resveratrol on apoptosis and proliferation in meningioma cells and characterize the underlying molecular mechanism. Methods HBL-52 meningioma cells were treated with resveratrol at doses of 10, 50, 100, 200, and 400 μM for 24, 36, and 48 hrs. Inhibition of proliferation was measured by CCK8 assay, and apoptosis was determined by annexin V staining and flow cytometry. Expression of apoptosis-associated proteins (cleaved-caspase-3, pro-caspase-3) and Bcl-2 were measured by Western blot. Levels of miR-34a-3p and Bcl-2 mRNA were analyzed by reverse transcriptase PCR. A dual luciferase assay was used to determine whether miR-34a-3p binds to the 3ʹUTR of Bcl-2. Results Resveratrol reduces proliferation and increases apoptosis in HBL-52 cells. These effects increase with increasing resveratrol concentration and exposure time. Resveratrol increases levels of cleaved-caspase 3 protein as well as decreases levels of pro-caspase 3 protein and Bcl-2 mRNA. The 3ʹUTR of Bcl-2 contains putative binding sites for miR-34a-3p, and these binding sites can regulate the expression of a luciferase reporter. Overexpression of miR-34a-3p reduces Bcl-2 protein levels in HBL-52 cells. Conclusion Resveratrol suppresses proliferation and induces apoptosis in meningioma cells by upregulating miR-34a-3p, which in turn downregulates Bcl-2. Resveratrol may be a useful drug for treating meningiomas.

Abstract
As transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) is implicated in the pathogenesis of glomerulosclerosis, the aim of the study was to demonstrate if levels of glomerular TGF-beta1 mRNA in renal biopsies correlated with glomerulosclerosis. Glomeruli were collected by microdissection from renal biopsies in patients with membranous nephropathy, lupus nephritis, diabetic nephropathy, minimal change disease and IgA nephropathy presented by proteinuria when serum creatinine was <3 mg%. Glomerular mRNAs were reverse transcribed and TGF-beta1, alpha2(IV) collagen, beta-actin cDNA quantitated by competitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR). By semiquantitative electron microscopy, a 3.5-fold increase of glomerular TGF-beta1/beta-actin mRNA ratio in the moderate sclerotic group (n = 23, p < 0.01) and a 1.5-fold increase in the mild sclerotic group (n = 22, p < 0.05) were observed when compared to the minimal sclerotic group (n = 12). A concordant increase of glomerular alpha2(IV) collagen mRNA was found with 2.2- and 1.3-fold in moderate and mild sclerotic groups, respectively. The TGF-beta1/beta-actin mRNA ratios were highest in membranous nephropathy (466.4 +/- 133.4, n = 11), followed by lupus nephritis (394.9 +/- 94.8, n = 12) and diabetic nephropathy (333.2 +/- 97.6, n = 10). Patients with minimal change disease(233.1 +/- 54.1, n = 15)and IgA nephropathy(185.3 +/- 39.6, n = 9) had low levels. The degree of glomerulosclerosis in each group followed the TGF-beta1/beta-actin mRNA ratios indicating that the level is the major determinant ofglomerulosclerosis but not the disease entities. Glomerular TGF-beta1/beta-actin mRNA ratio did not correlate with clinical parameters such as the urinary protein excretion and creatinine clearance. These results suggest that glomerular TGF-beta1/beta-actin mRNA ratio may be used as a marker of glomerulosclerosis in renal biopsy to reflect the local sclerotic process.

Abstract
Numerous studies have identified a strong linkage between the delivered dialysis dose (Kt/V) and the survival of hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, the current method used to calculate Kt/V requires multiple blood samples and the process is complex and time consuming. We evaluate the performance of a recently developed on-line monitor (Biostat 1000 dialysate urea monitor, Baxter) that measures the urea concentration in the effluent dialysate and displays Kt/V and nPCR immediately after hemodialysis. To verify the performance of the urea monitor, we selected 21 hemodialysis patients, calculated their Kt/V and nPCR values from blood samples obtained during each hemodialysis, and compared the results with data obtained using the urea monitor. The Kt/V and nPCR values calculated by the urea monitor were both significantly correlated with those obtained using blood samples (R = 0.804, p < 0.001 in Kt/V and R = 0.749, p < 0.001 in nPCR). Our results suggest that the urea monitor may be used for on-line assessment of dialysis adequacy and obviates the need for blood sampling.

Abstract
Gallbladder toxin of the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is a less well-known cause of acute renal failure. Three cases are reported and the diagnosis is primarily clinical. All our patients presented initially with gastrointestinal upset including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal fullness. These symptoms usually occurred with 10 min to 18 h after the ingestion the raw gallbladder of the grass carp. All our cases developed acute renal failure and in two of them toxic hepatitises were noted. An acute tubular necrosis was demonstrated on renal biopsy in one of our patients. The treatment is mainly supportive and two of them received hemodialysis. All three cases recovered, with normal renal and liver functions 2-4 weeks after the incident. A review of the cases previously reported in the English literature is presented.

Abstract
We detected the separate glomerular filtration rate (SGFR) with 99mTc-DTPA in patients on the nephrology ward since 1987. There were 40 patients, 19 males and 21 females. Their age ranged from 15 to 79 years old, with a mean +/- 1SD of 44 +/- 17 years old. They all received a SGFR examination and one or two creatinine clearance (Ccr) examinations during hospitalization. The Ccr values ranged from 4.6 to 141.5ml/min, and the mean +/- 1SD was 68.1 +/- 37.9ml/min. The total GFR value by the SGFR method was 1 to 142ml/min, with a mean of 78.9 +/- 39.4ml/min. The correlation coefficient of Ccr and SGFR was r = 0.81 (p = 0.0001). All 16 patients who had a SGFR less than 40% of the total GFR had specific clinical problems in that particular kidney. We concluded that 99mTc-DTPA renography was a correct and rapid method to check GFR, and may be another choice in addition to the traditional Ccr measurement. It was also a useful method for the diagnosis of disease in one kidney.

Abstract
Continuous arteriovenous hemodialysis (CAVHD) offers a modified therapeutic approach for the patient with acute renal failure. The system is modified fron the CAVH write out method by adding two pumps to control the flow rate of the dialysis solution and to reduce the nursing load. The blood flow through the dialyzer is dependent on the net blood pressure gradient. Peritoneal dialysis or bicarbonate dialysate is infused through the dialysate ports utilizing both diffuse and convective transport for an average blood flow rate of 0.9 L/hour. The two pumps control the dialysate inflow and outflow rates. Ten patients with complications and acute renal failure were treated with CAVHD for periods ranging from 10 to 154 hours. Average urea clearance was 9.39 mL/min. Average creatinine clearance was 9.12 mL/min, and in stable patients, the mean BUN was maintained at 60 mg/dL and the mean serum creatinine level was 4.6 mg/dL. The average ultrafiltration rate obtained was 100 mL/hr and was adjusted for the body fluid condition. most patients tolerated CAVHD without further hemodynamic instability and did not develop serious complications. In conclusion, CAVHD is a safe and technically simple procedure, which is particularly suitable for hemodynamically unstable patients requiring fluid removal.
