Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, hepatitis B infection (HBI) poses a substantial public health concern and healthcare workers, including nursing students, are at a higher risk of contracting this disease. Thus, the study aimed to assess how knowledge, attitudes, and sociodemographic factors are associated with HBI prevention among a sample of Bangladeshi nursing students. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was performed among 737 nursing students from the nursing institutes of Khulna and Barishal divisions in Bangladesh from January to April 2023. The data were collected by providing questionnaires (structured questionnaire) in the classroom, following a stratified random sampling process. A model of multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate the factors linked to HBI prevention practices. RESULT The mean (SD) scores were 11.42 (± 2.88) for knowledge, 4.33 (± 1.91) for attitude and 4.27 (± 2.056) for practice respectively. Participants' low knowledge (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 2.562, 95% CI: 1.29-5.07) and poor attitude (aOR = 5.730, 95% CI: 3.19-10.28) regarding HBI were significantly associated with higher likelihood of poor practice towards HBI prevention. Moreover, being 2nd year of nursing students (aOR = 2.147, 95% CI: 1.19-3.86), being aged 19-20 years (aOR = 3.038, 95% CI: 1.30-7.09), being married (aOR = 0.320, 95%CI: 0.13-0.82) and having a family history of HBI (aOR = 0.134, 95%CI: 0.05-0.36) were significantly associated with poor practices of HBI prevention among study participants. CONCLUSION The knowledge, attitude and practice scores of the nursing students on HBI prevention were suboptimal. We advocate for implementing regular HBI prevention education and policies, free or subsidized services, skill development, proper HBI prevention enforcement and strict professional ethics within nursing colleges. Such efforts should predominantly focus on second-year, aged 19-20 and unmarried nursing students.

Abstract
Climate variability and increasing drought events have become significant concerns in recent years. However, there is limited published research on body weight (BW) change of dairy heifers with different genetic merit when grazing on drought impacted pastures in southern Australia. Achieving target body weight (BW) is vital for dairy heifers, especially during critical stages like mating and calving. This study aimed to assess dry matter (DM) intake, BW change, urinary nitrogen excretion, and grazing behaviours of high vs. low genetic dairy heifers grazing pasture during a 43-day experimental period in a drought season. Forty-eight Holstein Friesian heifers grazed on ryegrass-dominant pasture and were divided into two groups based on their high and low Balanced Performance Index (HBPI and LBPI, respectively). Each group was further stratified into six plots, with similar BW, resulting in four heifers per replication group. Data from the five measurement days were averaged for individual cows to analyse the dry matter intake, nitrogen intake and nitrogen excretion. The statistical model included the treatment effect of BPI (H and L) and means were analysed using ANOVA. The pasture quality was poor, with metabolizable energy 9.3 MJ/Kg DM and crude protein 5.9% on a DM basis. Nitrogen intake and urinary nitrogen excretion were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in HBPI compared to the LBPI. However, despite these differences, the study did not find any advantages of having HBPI heifer grazing on low quality forage in terms of BW performance.

Abstract
Chevon Seekh Kabab is a popular meat product of India. However, due to high protein and moisture content it undergoes quick microbial spoilage and oxidative reactions leading to lower shelf life. The combination of chitosan edible film and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) was chosen to remediate this problem because of its antimicrobial and antioxidative effect. Control and chitosan edible film with CEO coated chevon Seekh Kabab samples were stored at 4 °C. The physicochemical (pH, TBARS, TVBN, moisture, colour), microbiological (APC, psychrophilic, coliform and Staphylococcal count) and sensory attributes were evaluated over a 30 days period. The maximum shelf life of 27 days was observed when 2% chitosan edible film with 0.3% CEO was coated over samples. A reduction in moisture, L* value, a* value and sensory scores along with an increase in pH, TVBN, TBARS, b* value and microbiological parameters were observed during the storage period. Reaction kinetics for the physicochemical and microbiological parameters was also established. The physicochemical, microbiological and sensory parameters were within prescribed limits till spoilage in the treated sample. This investigation may aid researchers working on scaling up of processing and preservation of Seekh Kabab.

Abstract
Low bone mineral density represents as a major cause of morbidity in thalassemic patient. The mechanism depends upon several factors. Transfusion dependent iron over load cause decrease secretion of growth hormone, insulin, thyroid hormone, parathyroid hormone, sex hormone and vitamin D from different endocrine organs which ultimately causes impairment of adequate bone mass achievement. Other causes of low bone mass are iron chelating agent and bony expansion due to increase erythropoiesis. To find out the frequency of low bone mineral density in thalassemia patients who are transfusion dependent. This study was designed as a cross sectional observational study, which was analyzed in the Department of Haematology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka and National Institution of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) from September 2017 to August 2018. It had been performed over total 72 (Age ≥06 years to ≤40 years) thalassaemic patients who are transfusion dependent. Presence of bone diseases was detected by Bone mineral density (BMD). Seventy-two (72) patients with transfusion dependent thalassaemia, aged 6 to 39 years were enrolled. Mean age of patients was 20.9±7.2 years. Among them, 57(79.2%) patients were detected as a normal bone mineral density and fifteen (20.8%) patients were detected as a low bone mineral density in the left femoral neck. In transfusion dependent thalassaemic patient, Low bone mass was significantly associated with low BMI, total number of blood transfusion and serum ferritin level remarkably. This survey has established a new path for early detection of low bone mass and helped in prevention of bone loss and its sequel by starting early treatment in these groups of patients.

Abstract
Context
While several studies have documented the consistency of milking order and its association with milk yield in herds with conventional milking systems, there is limited data available on herds in the automatic milking systems (AMS) where cows move to the dairy voluntarily to be milked.
Aims
The present study was conducted to examine the consistency of milking order in AMS and its association with milk yield and cow characteristics.
Methods
The study was performed at The University of Melbourne Dookie Dairy in northern Victoria, Australia. The milking herd had up to 158 Holstein–Friesian cows in a pasture-based AMS with a three-way grazing system. The study utilised the individual-cow milking times, parity number, days in milk and data on daily production (milk yield in kilograms, fat and protein percentages and liveweight) from August 2017 till April 2018. Monthly milking order was determined for each milking session by ranking individual cows on the basis of their recorded time of milking.
Key results
A consistent milking order was observed with the order of cows at the beginning (percentile rank position 0–33) and end of the milking order (percentile rank position 68–100) being less variable than cows in the middle positions. Milking orders from any two consecutive months were highly correlated (P < 0.01). Energy-corrected milk yield was negatively associated with the milking position (5 of 9 months) and days in milk (8 of 9 months), but positively associated with parity number and liveweight (5 of 9 months). The cow factors such as energy-corrected milk yield, liveweight, parity and days in milk were poor predictors of milking order. This suggests that other factors such as health and social dominance might be of importance.
Conclusions
This observational study indicated that cows at the beginning of the milking order have a higher milk yield than do cows at the end of the milking order in pasture-based automatic milking systems.
Implications
Grazing-management strategies that allow cows at the end of the milking order to access fresh pasture are worthy of further investigation.

Abstract
Understanding the frequency of bacteraemia of dental origin that is implicated in severe infective endocarditis (IE) will further our understanding of the disease's pathoaetiology and help us take steps to reduce its prevalence. A total of 78 patients from the Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, who had valve surgery due to IE (as confirmed by the Modified Duke Criteria) were included. Case notes were retrospectively reviewed for microorganisms that were implicated in the bacteraemia and IE. Associated factors were also recorded to determine whether they were different if a dental or non-dental pathogen was inoculated. A dental pathogen was implicated in 24 of the patients with IE; 20 had non-dental pathogens, and 30 were culture negative. This was not deemed statistically significant (p=0.54). Of the associated factors, only smoking was statistically significant with a greater proportion of non-smokers having bacteraemia of dental origin (p=0.03). No other associated factor was appreciably different based on the aetiology of the microorganism. Our results indicate that dental pathogens are not more likely to cause severe IE. We therefore advocate the stance adopted by the current national guidance on the judicious prescription of antibiotic prophylaxis for IE with regard to dental procedures.

Abstract
Natural plant pigment, anthocyanins have the capability to change its color with the change of its structure influenced by changing pH. This feature of anthocyanin has been harnessed to design a meat products quality indicator. In the present experiment anthocyanin rich Jamun fruit (Syzgium cumini) skin extract was used to develop quality indicator by immobilizing on filter paper strips with the purpose of application in chicken patties packets stored at refrigeration temperature (4 ± 1 °C). The indicator changed its color from violet to yellow due to changed pH in it when it was attached inside packet of chicken patties during storage, due to reaction with volatile basic compounds generated from meat. During storage for 21 days, various changes in quality attributes of chicken patties viz., pH, Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN), ammonia level, color value, sensory attributes and microbial evaluation were estimated. The pH decreased (P < 0.5) from 6.22 to 6.04. TVBN and ammonia and level increased significantly (P < 0.5) throughout storage. Redness, yellowness, hue and chroma value gradually changed during storage. Sensory scores also decreased significantly (P < 0.5). Microbial count also increased (P < 0.5) during this time. The experiment showed that, during storage, the color changing pattern of quality indicator was well correlated with the changes in quality attributes of chicken meat patties. Therefore, it is expected that the developed quality indicator can provide a convenient, non destructive, visual mean to monitor the meat products quality during refrigerated storage.

Abstract
Tick infestation is commonly found in every commercial cattle farm and domestically reared cattle. Farm generally used acaricides to treat tick infestation; however finding new, cheap and alternative source of acaricides is a prime concern. Here, we investigated the in-vitro efficacy of verenda (Ricinus communis) leaves extracts to treat tick infestation. We prepared aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic extract of verenda leaves to apply on ticks. A total of 90 ticks (both hard ticks and soft ticks) was collected from cattle in local area of Mymensingh region and divided into 3 treatment groups: A (aqueous), B (ethanol), C (methanol) and D (control). All groups were sub-divided into 3 sub-groups on the basis of concentration of 1%, 2% and 3% treatments. Ticks were treated with different concentration of extract and observation of tick was performed 12, 24 and 36 hours interval. The whole experiment was repeated thrice. Our data suggests 3% methanolic extract confer highest efficacy against ticks and verenda leaves extract could be used alternatively as acaricides.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is the most frequent cause of death from all gynaecological malignancies because of its insidious onset, vague symptoms and late presentation. This cross-sectional study was carried out on purposively selected 43 patients with suspected ovarian tumor in the Department of Radiology and Imaging in collaboration with the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Department of Pathology, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh from January 2015 to December 2016 to assess the diagnostic performance of color Doppler ultrasonography and CA-125 in a combination described as Novel Index in detection of ovarian tumor. Highest number of patients of ovarian tumor 10(23.26%) were in age group 35 to 44 years and 45 to 54 years with a mean of 37.72±15.65 years with a range of 8-70 years. Histopathology findings revealed 19(44.18%) benign tumors and 24(55.82%) malignant tumors. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy of Resistance Index (RI) in diagnosis of ovarian tumor were 91.67%, 89.47%, 91.67%, 89.47% and 90.69% respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of serum CA-125 were 83.33%, 89.47%, 90.90%, 80.95% and 86.04% respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy of Novel index were 95.83%, 89.47%, 92.00%, 94.44% and 93.02% respectively. Novel index showed better diagnostic performance. Based on the current study it is concluded that the combination of color Doppler ultrasonography and serum CA-125 can be useful for diagnosis of ovarian tumor.

Abstract
Nuts, besides favourable fatty acid and nutrient profile, possess certain bioactive/functional compounds, which elicit several health benefits. Premium mutton nuggets with improved nutritional profile were developed by reducing the traditionally added animal fat in emulsion with the incorporation of almond paste. In order to substitute added fat by nut-based fat, standardised almond paste with 50% lipids in its proximate were explored at three levels (10%, 15% and 20%) to determine the optimum level of its incorporation. The extra lipid content of almond paste was adjusted by replacing lean on constant weight basis. The premium product was further analysed and compared with traditional product for detailed product profile, which included lipid profile, calorific value, dietary fibre, antioxidant activity and texture profile. Based on physico-chemical and sensory scores, the optimum level of incorporation for almond paste was adjudged as 15%. Developed premium mutton nuggets had significantly less (P < 0.05) cholesterol content, increased dietary fibre, enhanced antioxidant activity and acceptable texture profile. Thus, it was concluded that functional components of almond can be very well incorporated in the conventional process to develop a superior product.

Abstract
The health-conscious consumers are in search of nutritious and convenient food item which can be best suited in their busy life. The vegetarianism is the key for the search of such food which resembles the meat in respect of nutrition and sensory characters, but not of animal origin and contains vegetable or its modified form, this is the point when meat analog evolved out and gets shape. The consumers gets full satisfaction by consumption of meat analog due to its typical meaty texture, appearance and the flavor which are being imparted during the skilled production of meat analog. The supplement of protein in vegetarian diet through meat alike food can be fulfilled by incorporating protein-rich vegetative food grade materials in meat analog and by adopting proper technological process which can promote the proper fabrication of meat analog with acceptable meat like texture, appearance, flavor, etc. The easily available vegetables, cereals, and pulses in India have great advantages and prospects to be used in food products and it can improve the nutritional and functional characters of the food items. The various form and functional characters of food items are available world over and attracts the meat technologists and the food processors to bring some innovativeness in meat analog and its presentation and marketability so that the acceptability of meat analog can be overgrown by the consumers.

Abstract
AIM The present study was conducted to develop a functional meat product by fortifying calcium (in the form of calcium lactate) with restructured buffalo meat loaf (RBML). MATERIALS AND METHODS Deboned buffalo meat obtained from the carcass of adult female buffalo within 5-6 h of slaughter and stored under frozen condition. Calcium fortified RBML were prepared by replacing the lean buffalo meat with calcium lactate powder at 0%, 1%, 1.25%, and 1.5% level through the pre-standardized procedure. The developed products were evaluated for physico-chemical properties, proximate composition, calcium concentration (mg/100 g), water activity (aw), Lovibond(®) tintometer color units, texture profile analysis (TPA), and sensory qualities as per-standard procedures. RESULTS Of the various product quality parameters evaluated, cooking yield (%), product pH, moisture (%), protein (%), fat (%), and water activity (aw) decreases significantly with increasing level of calcium lactate. Calcium content of fortified functional RBMLs was 135.02, 165.73, and 203.85 mg/100 g as compared to 6.48 mg/100 g in control. Most of the sensory scores at 1% and 1.25% levels of calcium lactate in treatment products remained comparable among themselves and control product, with a gradual decline. CONCLUSIONS The present study concluded that 1.25% calcium lactate was the optimum level for the fortification of calcium in RBML without affecting the textural and sensory properties which could meet out 15% of recommended dietary allowance for calcium.

Abstract
Use of extenders in meat products is not only health promoting but can also increase the economic worth of the products. Extension of the meat product is generally associated with poor binding and texture. Thus, the present study was envisaged to solve this problem by the incorporation of gum tragacanth (GT) as bind enhancing agent, used at three different levels viz., 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 % in a pre standardized formulation of extended restructured mutton chops (ERMC), by replacing the lean meat. The products were subjected to analysis for physico-chemical, sensory and textural properties. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in any of the physicochemical property parameters of product incorporated with different levels of GT except fat percent and shear force value. Mean scores for binding, texture and overall acceptability of ERMC incorporated with 0.1 % GT recorded significantly higher value (P < 0.05) than control and other treatment products. On the basis of sensory scores and physico-chemical properties, the optimum incorporation level of GT was adjudged as 0.1 %. Hardness and adhesiveness values were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in product with 0.1 % GT level. The product with optimum level of GT was also assessed for water activity (aw) and microbiological characteristics. It was found that treatment as well as control products were quite acceptable up to 15th day of storage period without any marked differences in sensory quality.

Abstract
A retrospective, single-cohort study was conducted to identify production and health factors associated with reproductive performance in a pasture-based, automatic milking system research farm. The calving system of this herd shifted from split calving to year-round calving gradually during the study period. Data from 365 cows with 798 lactations were analysed. Reproductive outcome variables of interest were intervals from calving to first oestrus, to first insemination, and to conception, as well as number of inseminations per conception, probability of submission for insemination by 80 days in milk, probability of conception by 100 days in milk and probability of conception at first insemination. Production factors (milk yield and its composition, milking frequency), record of periparturient disease, parity and season of calving were considered as predictor variables. The associations between predictor and outcome variables were assessed by multivariable linear regression, logistic regression and survival analyses, for quantitative, binary and time-to-event outcomes, respectively. Average milk yield and milking frequency during 100 days in milk were not significantly associated with any of the reproductive measures. The likelihood of conception by 100 days in milk decreased gradually with year of automatic milking system commissioning. Cows calved in autumn were 43% (hazard ratio 1.43, P < 0.05) more likely to conceive than cows calved in summer. Multiparous cows were more likely (P < 0.05) to be recorded for oestrus than primiparous cows. Twinning was negatively associated with the reproductive outcomes measured in the automatic milking system research herd. Milk yield and milking frequency during 100 days in milk had no effect on reproductive measures in the pasture-based, automatic milking system research herd.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the oxidative stress biomarkers in a cow diagnosed with a follicular cyst in her left ovary. Progesterone (P4) and plasma oxidative stress status was measured in 13 Holstein cows after synchronization of oestrus with controlled internal drug release (CIDR) and prostaglandinF2α (PGF2α) protocol. The presence and size of ovarian structures were monitored by transrectal ultrasound at 4 hourly intervals. Of the 13 cows, 12 were monitored until ovulation was detected and recorded, whereas one cow failed to ovulate and developed a follicular cyst. Oxidative stress biomarkers; reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), oxidative stress index (OSI), glutathione (GSH), ceruloplasmin and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) were measured in the cystic cow and compared to those of the 12 ovulated cows and are referred to as higher or lower if they are outside the mean ± standard error of mean of those of ovulated cows. The cystic cow had lower ROMs and OSI between 36 and 84 h after PGF2α injection and at 9 h, from 36 to 60 h after PGF2α injection respectively. On the other hand, antioxidant (BAP and GSH) was higher in the cystic cow compared to her ovulated herd mates. The observed imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant might have disrupted the physiological events for ovulation to occur, leading to cystic ovarian disease.

Abstract
The development and application of an algorithm to assess the ability of an infrared thermography (IRT) device to predict cows in estrus and about to ovulate was investigated. Twenty cows were synchronized using a controlled internal drug release and PGF2α. Vulval and muzzle temperatures were measured every 12 hours from controlled internal drug release insertion to 32 hours after PGF2α treatment and then every 4 hours until ovulation occurred or until 128 hours after PGF2α treatment (whichever occurred first). Thermal images obtained with a FLIR T620 series infrared camera were analyzed using ThermaCAM Researcher Professional 2.9 software. Cows were also monitored for behavioral signs of estrus and color changes of an Estrotect applied to the tail head of each cow 36 hours after PGF2α treatment. Algorithms were developed by adjusting body surface temperature of individual animals for ambient temperature and humidity during each observation period, and were expressed as a deviation from the baseline temperature. Of the 20 cows enrolled in this study, 12 (60%) ovulated. An IRT estrus alert was defined using different thresholds (D = 1 °C, 1.25 °C, and 1.5 °C). Sensitivity and specificity to predict estrus depended upon the chosen threshold level. At a threshold D = 1 °C, the highest sensitivity (92%; n = 11) and the lowest specificity (29%) and positive predictive value (64%) were observed. Conversely, D = 1.5 °C resulted in sensitivity of 75%, specificity of 57%, and positive predictive value of 69%. The mean ± standard deviation intervals between onset and the end of IRT estrus alert to ovulation were 30.7 ± 8.2 and 13.3 ± 7.7 hours, respectively. Ovulation occurred 24 to 47 hours after the onset of the IRT estrus alert for eight out of the 11 ovulated cows (73%). Although the sensitivity of the IRT alert was greater than visual observation (67%) and Estrotect activation (67%), the specificity and positive predictive value were lower than these two aids (i.e., the IRT overpredicted the incidence of ovulation). Results presented indicate that IRT shows some potential as an estrus detection aid; however, further studies investigating the potential to improve the specificity and capturing data throughout entire 21-day reproductive cycles would be worthwhile.

Abstract
Assessing the medical history of patients before any treatment is an essential aspect of the dentist's responsibility; however, many dental practitioners assume that their patients are systemically healthy so their medical history is often overlooked. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of self-reported medical conditions among a sample of dental school patients at the Institute of Dental Sciences, Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), India. Detailed medical histories were taken from 3,786 new dental patients in an outpatient setting. The demographic data, medical status, and use of medications from the charts were analyzed. Thirty-eight percent of the total patients had a positive finding in their medical history for at least one systemic condition. The most commonly reported systemic condition was hypertension (15.2 percent) followed by diabetes (11.4 percent), and 26 percent of the patients were taking at least one medication daily. The results of this study reflect the medical complexity of the increasingly aging population.

Abstract
Coronary Artery disease (CAD) is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in the developed world as well as in Bangladesh. Treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) patient either by Streptokinase (STK) or Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (pPCI) has increased the survival outcome and reduced the mortality. Several studies have documented the significant beneficial role pPCI in terms of in-hospital survival outcome over thrombolysis. Our patient, who had Anterior MI in 2004 and his CAG revealed TVD. pPCI of the culprit mid LAD lesion with Bare Metal Stent (BMS) was done immediately after hospitalization. He was later referred for CABG, but decision postponed because of asymptomatic status. His re-look CAG on 20-02-2008 (i.e., 4 yrs after the original procedure), revealed patent LAD stent with the regression of atherosclerotic plaque in Ostio-Proximal LAD and proximal LCX. Our findings indicated that pPCI with rigid control of CAD risk factors and modification of lifestyle plays a key role in the regression of atherosclerotic plaque and maintenance of stent patency.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pulse.v4i1.6959Pulse Vol.4 January 2010 p.22-25

Abstract
Dietary fiber rich chicken meat patties were developed by incorporating wheat and oat bran to chicken meat at 5, 10 and 15% levels. Oat bran contained higher amount of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and unsaturated fatty acids (USFA) than wheat bran, whereas total dietary fiber (TDF), insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) were higher in wheat bran. Incorporation of bran significantly increased the water holding capacity (WHC) and emulsion stability (ES). Oat bran showed better effect on WHC and ES than wheat bran. Addition of bran resulted in significant increase in cooking yield, firmness, TDF, USFA and reduction in sensory attributes, moisture, protein, fat and cholesterol content. IDF was higher in wheat bran added patties and SDF and SFA/USFA ratio in oat bran added patties. It is concluded that oat and wheat bran can be incorporated up to 10 and 15% level, respectively for preparation of baked and steamed chicken patties.

Abstract
Infectious laryngotracheitis is an acute upper respiratory tract infection of chickens caused by infectious laryngotracheitis virus. The study was conducted to standardize the polymerase chain reaction targeting a relatively conserved region of the thymidine kinase gene for the rapid detection of infectious laryngotracheitis virus. The vaccine samples were collected from two renowned company of Bangladesh. DNA was extracted from diluted vaccine samples by using Wizard® Genomic DNA purification kit and thymidine kinase gene was amplified by using PCR system 9600 Thermocycler. Two vaccine samples were positively amplified by polymerase chain reaction. A procedure was developed for rapid detection of infectious laryngotracheitis virus by polymerase chain reaction of the conserved region of viral thymidine kinase gene containing DNA fragments. The results obtained in this study suggested that the polymerase chain reaction procedure could serve as a fast and sensitive method for the detection of vaccine strains of infectious laryngotracheitis viruses. Abstract
To evaluate the antifertility effect of crude mixture of A. precatorius seeds at the dose level of 50 mg/kg body weight in adult male rats, after oral administration to male rats for 40 days, the rats were sacrificed and hormonal profiles, serum biochemistry, sperm count and histological changes were recorded. A sharp decrease in the serum levels of testosterone (0.70 ± 0.17 ng/ml), FSH (0.70 ± 0.22 lU/L), and LH (0.87 ± 0.35 IU/L) was detected compared to control (FSH, LH and testosterone levels 0.93 ± 0.15 ng/ml, 0.76 ± 0.28 IU/L, 1.44 ± .011 IU/L, respectively). A significant reduction of epididymal sperm count (2.34 million/mL) was noted in treated rats as compared to control group (7.87 million/mL). Histology of testes showed marked atrophy of the testes, which was characterized by disruption of the seminiferous epithelium and atrophy of the Leydig cells. Crude mixture of A. precatorius seed has a negative impact on male reproductive functions. It might be suggested that crude mixture of A. precatorius seeds might have antifertility property for male rats. Keywords: Abrus precatorius; antifertility; male rat; testosterone. Abstract
This study was conducted in Sylhet district of Bangladesh to investigate the pathological effect of liver fluke in Black Bengal goats of different age groups, sex and in seasons. In this study, livers of male and female goats were collected randomly from slaughter house during a period of 1 (one) year (November, 2007 to October, 2008). A total of 325 Black Bengal goat livers were examined, of which 70 livers were found infected with Fasciola gigantica. The common histopathological changes found in this study were the migratory tract with lymphocytic infiltration, atrophy, necrosis and fatty changes in the liver. The study revealed that age of the animal has significant effect on Fascioliasis in goats. Significantly (P<0.01) highest infection rate was found in 2-2.5 years old animals (50%). The sex of the animal was also found as important determinants for Fascioliasis. In this study out of 219 male goat livers 30 (13.70%) were infected with Fasciola. On the other hand, out of 106 female goat livers, 40 (37.73%) were found positive with Fascioliasis. The data of origin of animals also collected which was not statistically significant.
