Synthesis, Experimental and Theoretical Study of Azidochromones

A series of 2-(haloalkyl)-3-azidomethyl and 6-azido chromones has been synthetized, characterized and studied by theoretical (DFT calculations) and spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis, NMR). The crystal structure of 3-azidomethyl-2-difluoromethyl chromone, determined by X-ray diffraction methods, shows a planar framework due to extended π-bond delocalization. Its molecular packing is stabilized by F···H, N···H and O···H hydrogen bonds, π···π stacking and C–O···π intermolecular interactions. Moreover, AIM, NCI and Hirshfeld analysis evidenced that azido moiety has a significant role in the stabilization of crystal packing through weak intermolecular interactions, where analysis of electronic density suggested closed-shell (CS) interatomic interactions.

Synthesis, Structure, and Biological Assays of Novel Trifluoromethyldiazepine–Metal Complexes

A new series of CuII, NiII, CoII, and MnIII complexes have been synthesised from the (6Z)-6-(7-trifluoromethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5H-1,4-diazepin-5-ylidene)cyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-one (HDZP) ligand. These complexes were characterised by elemental, spectroscopic (IR and UV-vis), and thermal analysis. The crystal structure of Cu-DZP was solved by X-ray diffraction methods. The complex crystallises in the monoclinic P21/c space group, with two molecules per unit cell. The crystal lattice is stabilised by different intra and intermolecular interactions. Hirshfeld surface analysis was employed to obtain additional information about interactions that are responsible for the crystal packing. Quantitative examination of the fingerprint plots indicated the dominant contribution of H⋯H and H⋯X (X=O, F) interactions in the crystal packing. In addition, C–H⋯chelate ring (CR) and C–H⋯π interactions are described in detail and evaluated using DFT calculations. The antibacterial properties and the mechanism of inhibition of the main bacterial resistant mechanism, the biofilm, of the metal complexes and free ligand were investigated. [Mn(DZP)3]·2H2O was the most active complex against the Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation with an inhibition of 40%. However, none of the complexes inhibit more than 25% of the Gram negative bacteria microbial development. The most meaningful result was the bactericidal effect of [Co(DZP)2(H2O)2]·2H2O against the Gram positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, which inhibits the bacterial development and significantly reduces the biofilm formation at low concentration.

Enol-imino-Keto-enamine Tautomerism in a Diazepine Derivative: How Decisive Are the Intermolecular Interactions in the Equilibrium?

The strange tautomeric equilibrium behavior exhibited by a new o-hydroxyphenyl diazepine derivative when the compound is analyzed both in solution and solid state opens the structural study of the enol-imino-keto-enamine forms and the influence of the intermolecular interactions in their equilibrium. The expected enol-imino form, in which the enol is part of a phenyl system and a strong O-H···N intramolecular hydrogen bond is established, results the most stable tautomer in gas phase (theoretical calculations) and was detected by NMR spectroscopy when the compound was dissolved in aprotic solvents. Nevertheless, the keto-enamine form ,in which the keto group integrates a cyclohexadienone moiety and the aromaticity of the phenol is lost, was the only tautomer in the crystal lattice according to single-crystal X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance results. The last form was also found as the main tautomer in UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy when a protic solvent was employed.

A detailed experimental and theoretical study of two novel substituted trifluoromethylchromones. The influence of the bulky bromine atom on the crystal packing

The new 3-methyl-2-trifluoromethylchromone (1) and 3-bromomethyl-2-trifluoromethylchromone (2) compounds were synthesized and characterized by vibrational (IR, Raman), UV-Vis and NMR ((1)H, (13)C and (19)F) spectroscopy and MS spectrometry. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystallize in the monoclinic P21/c space group with Z=4 molecules per unit cell. The structures were solved from 1423 (1) and 1856 (2) reflections with I>2σ (I) and refined by full-matrix least-squares to agreement R1-values of 0.0403 (1) and 0.0554 (2). Because of π-bonding delocalization, the organic molecular skeletons are planar and the molecular bonding structures can be described by formally single, double and resonant bonds. In 2, the CF3 group revealed a strong rotational disorder around the CCF3 bond, which could be explained in terms of four split positions with about uniform angular distribution. The vibrational, electronic and NMR, spectra were discussed and assigned with the assistance of DFT calculations.

Dimers of perhaloacetyl cyanides: CClF2C(O)OC(CN)2CClF2 and CF3C(O)OC(CN) 2CF3. preparation, properties, and spectroscopy

The vapor of the new compound 1,1-dicyano-2-chloro-2,2-difluoroethyl chlorodifluoroacetate, CClF2C(O)OC(CN)2CClF2 and of the known 1,1-dicyano-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl trifluoroacetate, CF3C(O)OC(CN)2CF3, were investigated using vibrational spectroscopy tools. The existence of rotational isomerism was confirmed for CClF2C(O)OC(CN)2CClF2 when the matrix isolated compound was examined in combination with the computational results applying quantum chemical models. From the four conformers gauche-syn-gauche, gauche-syn-anti, syn-syn-anti, syn-syn-gauche (the used nomenclature is with respect to the ϕ(ClC-C(O)), ϕ((O)C-OC), and ϕ(OC-CCl) torsion angles, respectively) predicted for CClF2C(O)OC(CN)2CClF2 the first two forms can be evidenced using Ar-matrix IR spectroscopy, with the first one being the most abundant at room temperature. On the other side, the results obtained for CF3C(O)OC(CN)2CF3 reveals the existence of only one syn-syn-anti form. CClF2C(O)OC(CN)2CClF2 melts at -40 °C and its vapor pressure was fitted by the equation ln p = -4732.6 (1/T) + 10.75 (p [Atm], T [K]) in the range -20 to 20 °C. Its extrapolated boiling point is 167 °C. The first ionization potentials occur for CClF2C(O)OC(CN)2CClF2 and CF3C(O)OC(CN)2CF3 at 12.13 and 12.43 eV, respectively, and were attributed to the ejection of electrons formally located at the carbonylic oxygen lone-pair electrons (nO). The proposed interpretation of the photoelectron spectrum is consistent with related molecules reported previously, and also with the prediction of Outer Valence Green's Functions (OVGF).

Chlorodifluoroacetyl isothiocyanate, ClF2CC(O)NCS: preparation and structural and spectroscopic studies

Chlorodifluoroacetyl isothiocyanate, ClF2CC(O)NCS, was synthesized by the reaction of ClF2CC(O)Cl with an excess of AgNCS. The colorless product melts at -85 °C, and its vapor pressure follows the equation ln p = -4471.1 (1/T) + 11.35 (p [atm], T [K]) in the range -38 to 22 °C. The compound has been characterized by IR (gas phase, Ar matrix, and matrix photochemistry), by liquid Raman, by (19)F and (13)C NMR, gas UV-vis, and photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), by photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS), and by gas electron diffraction (GED). The conformational properties of ClF2CC(O)NCS have been analyzed by joint application of vibrational spectroscopy, GED and quantum chemical calculations. The existence of two conformers has been detected in the gas and liquid phases, in which the C-Cl bond adopts a gauche orientation with respect to the C═O group; the C═O group is in syn- or anti-position with respect to the N═C double bond of the NCS group. The computed ΔG° difference between these two gauche-syn and gauche-anti forms is ΔG° = 0.63 kcal mol(-1) in the B3LYP/6-31G(d) approximation. The most significant gas-phase structural parameters for gauche-syn ClF2CC(O)NCS are re(NC═S) 1.559(2) Å, re(N═CS) 1.213(2) Å, re(N-C) 1.399(7) Å, re(C═O) 1.199(2) Å, and ∠e(CNC) 134.7(13)°. Photolysis of ClF2CC(O)NCS using an ArF excimer laser (193 nm) mainly yields ClF2CNCS, CO, and ClC(O)CF2NCS. The valence electronic properties of the title compound were studied using PES and PIMS. The experimental first vertical ionization energy of 10.43 eV corresponds to the ejection primarily of the sulfur lone-pair electrons of the in-plane nonbonding orbital on the NCS group.

Bis (trifluoromethyl) sulfone, CF3SO2CF3: synthesis, vibrational and conformational properties

Bis (trifluoromethyl) sulfone, CF(3)SO(2)CF(3), was obtained as a byproduct in the synthesis of CF(3)SO(2)SCF(3). The compound was characterized by infrared and Raman spectroscopy as well quantum chemical calculations. Quantum mechanical calculations indicate the possible existence of two conformers symmetrically equivalent with C(2) symmetry. The preference for the staggered form was studied using the total energy scheme and the natural bond orbital (NBO) partition scheme. Additionally, the total potential energy was deconvoluted using a sixfold decomposition in terms of a Fourier-type expansion, showing that the hyperconjugative effect was dominant in stabilizing the staggered conformer. Infrared and Raman spectra of CF(3)SO(2)CF(3) were obtained. Harmonic vibrational wavenumbers and a scaled force field were calculated, leading to a final root mean-square deviation of 7.8 cm(-1) when comparing experimental and calculated wavenumbers.

Spectroscopic, structural, and conformational properties of (Z)-4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-buten-1-one, C12H12F3NO3: a trifluoromethyl-substituted β-aminoenone

The (Z)-4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-buten-1-one (C(12)H(12)F(3)NO(3)) compound was thoroughly studied by IR, Raman, UV-visible, and (13)C and (19)F NMR spectroscopies. The solid-state molecular structure was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the P2(1)/c space group with a = 12.1420(4) Å, b = 7.8210(3) Å, c = 13.8970(5) Å, β = 116.162(2)°, and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The molecule shows a nearly planar molecular skeleton, favored by intramolecular OH···O and NH···O bonds, which are arranged in the lattice as an OH···O bonded polymer coiled around crystallographic 2-fold screw-axes. The three postulated tautomers were evaluated using quantum chemical calculations. The lowest energy tautomer (I) calculated with density functional theory methods agrees with the observed crystal structure. The structural and conformational properties are discussed considering the effect of the intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions.

2-Chloroethylisocyanate. Thermal decomposition and spectroscopic properties

2-Chloroethylisocyanate has been studied in a thorough way. NMR, Raman, FTIR, and Ar-matrix vibrational spectra of the molecule are presented and discussed with the complement of ab initio and DFT methods. The spectroscopic results reveal the existence of anti and gauche conformers that are equally populated in the gas phase. Thermal decomposition between 393 and 648 K shows two different pathways depending on the temperature, which can be interpreted in terms of simple second- and first-order mechanisms, respectively. Quantum mechanical calculations reproduce the experimental results.

S-(Fluoroformyl)O-(Trifluoroacetyl) Thioperoxide, FC(O)S−OC(O)CF3: Gas-Phase Structure and Conformational Properties

The geometric structure and conformational properties of S-(fluoroformyl)O-(trifluoroacetyl) thioperoxide, FC(O)S-OC(O)CF3, were investigated by gas electron diffraction, matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP with the 6-31G and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets and MP2 with the 6-31G basis set). The experimental methods result in a mixture of two conformers with gauche conformation around the S-O bond. In the main conformer (82(7)% according to GED at 298 K), the C=O bond of the FC(O) group is oriented syn with respect to the S-O bond and phi(C-S-O-C) = 75(3) degrees . In the minor conformer (18(7)%), this C=O is oriented anti. Both conformers possess syn orientation of the C=O bond of the CF3C(O) group. The conformational properties and geometric parameters are reproduced reasonably well by the quantum chemical calculations, except for the S-O bond length, which is predicted too long by 0.04 A (B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ).

Trifluoromethanesulfenyl Acetate, CF3S−OC(O)CH3, and Trifluoromethanesulfenyl Trifluoroacetate, CF3S−OC(O)CF3: Unexpected Conformational Properties

Structural and conformational properties of two sulfenyl derivatives, trifluoromethanesulfenyl acetate, CF3S-OC(O)CH3 (1), and trifluoromethanesulfenyl trifluoroacetate, CF3S-OC(O)CF3 (2), were determined by gas electron diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, in particular with IR (matrix) spectroscopy, which includes photochemical studies, and by quantum chemical calculations. Both compounds exist in the gas phase as a mixture of two conformers, with the prevailing component possessing a gauche structure around the S-O bond. The minor form, 15(5)% in 1 and 11(5)% in 2 according to IR(matrix) spectra, possesses an unexpected trans structure around the S-O bond. The C=O bond of the acetyl group is oriented syn with respect to the S-O bond in both conformers. UV-visible broad band irradiation of 1 and 2 isolated in inert gas matrixes causes various changes to occur. Conformational randomization clearly takes place in 2 with simultaneous formation of CF3SCF3. For 1 the only reaction channel detected leads to the formation of CH3SCF3 with the consequent extrusion of CO2. Quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP/6-31G and MP2 with 6-31G and 6-311G(2df,pd) basis sets) confirm the existence of a stable trans conformer. The calculations reproduce the conformational properties for both compounds qualitatively correct with the exception of the B3LYP method for compound 2 which predicts the trans form to be prevailing, in contrast to the experiment.

Photoisomerization of Matrix-Isolated Bis(trifluoromethyl) Sulfoxide: Formation of the Sulfenic Ester CF3SOCF3

Bis(trifluoromethyl) sulfoxide, CF(3)S(O)CF(3), isolated in noble gas matrixes at low temperatures, isomerizes upon UV irradiation into the sulfenic ester CF(3)SOCF(3). The new species is characterized spectroscopically, and the vibrational assignment is supported by (18)O isotopic labeling experiments and by DFT calculations. The calculated structural parameters of CF(3)SOCF(3) are compared with the calculated and experimental data of the related compounds CF(3)SSCF(3) and CF(3)OOCF(3). In addition, the computed enthalpy differences between the sulfoxide R(2)S=O and sulfenate RSOR structures for R = H, F, CH(3), and CF(3) are included.

Trifluoroacetylsulfenyl trifluoroacetate, CF(3)C(O)-S-O-C(O)CF(3), a novel compound with a symmetrically substituted S-O bond: synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and quantum chemical calculations

The new compound trifluoroacetylsulfenyl trifluoroacetate, CF(3)C(O)SOC(O)CF(3), which possesses two identical carbonyl substituents attached to the S-O bond, has been synthesized. The IR and UV spectra of the gas phase as well as the (13)C NMR spectrum of the solution in CDCl(3) were recorded and assigned. Quantum chemical calculations were performed with the ab initio methods HF and MP2 and the density functional approach B3LYP. The 6-31G basis set was chosen in all calculations. The molecule possesses a skew structure, and according to all computational methods, the syn-syn structure (C=O bonds of both C(O)CF(3) groups synperiplanar to S-O bond) represents the most stable conformer. In agreement with the quantum chemical calculations, the presence of small amounts (< or =5%) of a second conformer (anti-syn) cannot be excluded on the basis of the IR spectrum. The calculated values for the torsional angle around the S-O bond (delta(C-S-O-C)) of the syn-syn form are smaller than 80 degrees (72-78 degrees). Comparison with theoretical results for the corresponding disulfide CF(3)C(O)SSC(O)CF(3) and peroxide CF(3)C(O)OOC(O)CF(3) indicates that the structural properties of sulfenyl compounds are more similar to those of disulfides than to those of peroxides.

Tautomers and conformers of malonamide, NH2-C(O)-CH2-C(O)-NH2: vibrational analysis, NMR spectra and ab initio calculations

The conformational and tautomeric compositions of malonamide, NH2-C(O)-CH2-C(O)-NH2 were determined by vibrational spectroscopy and theoretical calculations (HF/6-31G*, B3PW91/6-31G*). Solid state Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra were analysed. They reveal the existence of a diketo tautomer. Theoretical calculations predict a diketo structure belonging to the C1 symmetry group. No enol form is present in the molecule in the solid. 13C-NMR studies show only signals of a diketo tautomer.
