Influence of Fluctuating Water Temperature and Dietary Oxytetracycline on the Safety of Monosex Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus Fries

The influence of fluctuating water temperature and dietary oxytetracycline (OTC) at 0 (0X), 80 (1X), 240 (3X), 400 (5X) and 800 mg (10X)/kg biomass/day for 30 consecutive days on the safety of monosex (all male) Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus fries in terms of feeding, growth, survival and histopathology of vital organs were assessed. A dose-dependent decline in feed intake and biomass was recorded. The OTC-dosed groups recorded higher mortalities than the control. The therapeutic OTC-dosing (1X) in conjunction with low temperature caused 75.56 ± 8.01% mortality and 25.75% reduced feed intake in 30 days. The mortalities increased with increasing OTC-doses from 85.19 ± 3.39% (1X) to 95.56 ± 2.22% (10X) and fluctuating temperature (12.00-21.50°C) even after the withdrawal of OTC. Relatively mild to moderate histopathological lesions were observed in the kidney, liver and intestine of OTC-dosed fries. These results suggested that dietary OTC and low water temperature may cause adverse effects on monosex O. niloticus fries.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa FARP72 Offers Protection Against Aeromonas hydrophila Infection in Labeo rohita

Use of probiotics as the biocontrol agent for disease prevention in aquaculture is gaining importance as an alternative to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics and other chemotherapeutics. In view of this trend, the probiotic properties of a potent antagonistic bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa FARP₇₂, was characterized in terms of safety, antagonistic activities, in vitro immunomodulation, and in vivo disease resistance. Immunomodulatory activity was ascertained by measuring the production of intracellular superoxide anion, nitric oxide, total leukocyte peroxidase content, and the leukocyte proliferation in head kidney leukocytes. The bacterium isolated from the skin mucus of freshwater catfish Clarias batrachus was harmless to Labeo rohita. It showed inhibitory activity against Aeromonas caviae, A. hydrophila, Edwardsiella tarda, Pseudomonas putida, and Streptococcus agalactiae as revealed by cross and parallel streaking methods. Significantly higher superoxide anion and nitric oxide production, peroxidase content, and proliferative responses of leucocytes delineated the strains' ability to interact with immune cells to activate the immune system in vitro. Significant growth inhibition of A. hydrophila from 1.55 × 10⁵ CFU/mL was observed when co-cultured with P. aeruginosa FARP₇₂ in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at levels ranging from 2.61 × 10⁷ to 2.61 × 10⁹ CFU/mL in 10 days. P. aeruginosa FARP₇₂ increased the survival rate of rohu fingerlings against pathogenic A. hydrophila challenge in biocontrol study in vivo as determined by cohabitation challenge. These results suggest that P. aeruginosa FARP₇₂ is a potential probiotic strain and can be used in aquaculture to improve the health status and disease resistance of fish.

Topical Steroid Awareness and Abuse: A Prospective Study among Dermatology Outpatients

Background:

Topical steroids are one of the most commonly abused drugs. There are only a few studies available which have highlighted the severity of this problem in India. However, these studies have concentrated mainly on the topical steroid abuse and its side effects over the face.

Aims:

The aim of this study was to know the awareness among the people about various commonly available topical steroids and their combinations irrespective of usage and to know the extent of misuse of these drugs. Along with this, we also tried to find the source of recommendation of these medicines which will help to sensitize people about this menace.

Materials and Methods:

This was a prospective, questionnaire-based study done at a tertiary care hospital. A total of 1000 adult patients attending the dermatology outpatient department were administered a questionnaire about awareness and usage of topical steroid and its combinations.

Results:

A total of 1000 adult patients were included in the study, out of which 809 (80.9%) patients had heard about at least one of the topical steroids or its combinations mentioned in the questionnaire. Six hundred and twelve (61.2%) patients had used these creams. Acne and pigmentation were the most common indications for which topical steroid was used. These medicines were recommended by general practitioners in 302 (49.5%) patients and pharmacists in 71 (11.6%) patients. Totally, 318 (51.9%) patients complained of some form of side effect after using these creams. Aggravation of the symptoms and increased pigmentation were the most common adverse effects.

Conclusion:

Misuse of topical steroids not just over the face but also as a cream for any skin problem is quite common. Most of the times, it is recommended by general practitioners or pharmacists. It is very important to sensitize these people about the possible complications of these drugs and the extent of problem the society is facing because of irrational and unregulated use of these drugs.
