Recent advances in biomacromolecule-based nanocomposite films for intelligent food packaging- A review

In food packaging, biopolymer films are biodegradable films made from biomacromolecule-based natural materials, while biocomposite films are hybrids of two or more materials, with at least one being biodegradable. Bionanocomposites are different than the earlier ones, as they consist of various nanofillers (both natural and inorganic) in combination with biomacromolecule-based biodegradable materials to make good compostable bionanocomposites. In this regard, a new type of material known as bionanocomposite has been recently introduced to improve the properties and performance of biocomposite films. Bionanocomposites are primarily developed for active packaging, but their use in intelligent packaging is also noteworthy. For example, bionanocomposites developed using a hybrid of anthocyanin and carbon dots as intelligent materials have shown their high pH-sensing properties. The natural nanofillers (like nanocellulose, nanochitosan, nanoliposome, cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibers, etc.) are being employed to promote the sustainability, degradability and safety of bionanocomposites. Overall, this article comprehensively reviews the latest innovations in bionanocomposite films for intelligent food packaging over the past five years. In addition to packaging aspects, the role of nanofillers, the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA) and risk assessment, associated challenges, and future perspectives of bionanocomposite intelligent films are also discussed.

Valorization of fruit processing waste to produce high value-added bacterial nanocellulose by a novel strain Komagataeibacter xylinus IITR DKH20

To date, the production of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) by standard methods has been well known, while the use of low-cost feedstock as an alternative medium still needs to be explored for BNC commercialization. This study explores the prospect for the use of the different aqueous extract of fruit peel wastes (aE-FPW) as a nutrient and carbon source for the production of BNC. Herein, this objective was accomplished by the use of a novel, high- yielding strain, isolated from rotten apple and further identified as Komagataeibacter xylinus IITR DKH20 using 16 s rRNA sequencing analysis. The physicochemical properties of BNC matrix collected from the various aE-FPW mediums were similar or advanced to those collected with the HS medium. Statistical optimization of BNC based on Central Composite Design was performed to study the effect of significant parameters and the results demonstrated that the BNC yield (11.44 g L^-1) was increased by 4.5 fold after optimization.

Association of novel SNPs in the candidate genes affecting caprine milk fatty acids related to human health

In the present investigation, 618 milk samples of Sirohi breed of goat were collected, and analyzed for conjugated linoleic acid (CLA, C18:2) and other fatty acids. The CLA in studied goat milk samples was 4.87 mg/g of milk fat and C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 contributes 2.9 mg/g of milk fat and trans10 cis12 contributes 0.82 mg/g of milk fat. The saturated fatty acids in the milk accounted for 69.55% and unsaturated fatty acid accounted for 28.50%. The unsaturated fatty acid was constituted by monounsaturated fatty acid (24.57%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (3.96%.). The major contribution (45.56%) in total fatty acid was of C12:0, C14:0 and C16:0. C18:0 and short chain ones (C4:0, C6:0, C8:0, and C10:0) have a neutral or cholesterol-decreasing effect. The DNA sequence analysis of the genes (DGAT1, SCAP, PPARG, OLR, FABP3 and PRL) in a random panel of 8 Sirohi goats revealed 38 SNPs across the targeted regions. Out of the studied SNPs (38) across these genes, 22 SNPs had significant effect on one or a group of fatty acids including CLA. The genotypes at these loci showed significant differences in the least square means of a particular fatty acid or a group of fatty acids including CLA and its isomers.

Thyroid function at diagnosis of type I diabetes

BACKGROUND

National guidelines recommend that thyroid function is assessed at diagnosis of type I diabetes (TIDM) and annually thereafter. This paper reports an audit of thyroid surveillance in accordance with this guideline.

PATIENTS

110 patients (66 males), median age 11.3 (1.2-15.7) years at diagnosis of TIDM, were monitored for 2.3 (0.7-4.2) years.

RESULTS

21/110 (19.0%) patients had abnormal thyroid function at diagnosis of TIDM. Of these, 16 had normal thyroid function on reassessment after 45 (3-540) days. Abnormalities of thyroid function occurred more commonly in children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) than those who did not have DKA (9/29, 31.0% vs 12/81, 14.8%, p<0.025). At the end of the observation period, five (4.5%) patients had minor abnormalities of thyroid function not requiring treatment and three (2.7%) were treated.

CONCLUSIONS

Transient abnormalities of thyroid function are common at diagnosis of TIDM, and therefore, thyroid hormones should not be measured at this time.

Femoral pseudoaneurysm in drug addicts: Hunterian ligation still a gold standard

Pseudoaneurysm formation in the site of Intravenous drug abuser had been reported in literature. The repeated puncture of femoral vessels leads to abscess formation and epithelisation of the wall which leads to pseudoaneurysm formation. A case of lacking pseudoaneurysm presenting as reptured groin abscess in a drug addict is reported, which was managed successfully by Hunterian ligation with salvage of lower limb.
