Thermochemical Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures Formation by Femtosecond Laser on Hf Thin Films in Air and Vacuum

Thermochemical laser-induced periodic surface structures (TLIPSS) are a relatively new type of periodic structures formed in the focal area of linear polarized laser radiation by the thermally stimulated reaction of oxidation. The high regularity of the structures and the possibility of forming high-ordered structures over a large area open up possibilities for the practical application for changing the optical and physical properties of materials surface. Since the mechanism of formation of these structures is based on a chemical oxidation reaction, an intriguing question involves the influence of air pressure on the quality of structure formation. This paper presents the results on the TLIPSS formation on a thin hafnium film with fs IR laser radiation at various ambient air pressures from 4 Torr to 760 Torr. Despite the decrease in the oxygen content in the ambient environment by two orders of magnitude, the formation of high-ordered TLIPSS (dispersion in the LIPSS orientation angle δθ < 5°) with a period of ≈700 nm occurs within a wide range of parameters variation (laser power, scanning speed). This behavior of TLIPSS formation is in agreement with experimental data obtained earlier on the study of the kinetics of high-temperature oxidation of hafnium at various oxygen pressures.

Diffractive Sensor Elements for Registration of Long-Term Instability at Writing of Computer-Generated Holograms

The research and development of methods using of the specialized diffractive microstructure sensors embedded in the pattern of computer-generated holograms (CGH) manufactured on circular and X-Y laser writing systems is discussed. These microstructures consist of two parts: one of which is written before the CGH in the field of future hologram and the second one is written during the long-term writing of the CGH. The shift between the first and second part of the microstructure is the trace of the writing errors and allows one to determine and calculate the error of CGH fabrication along both orthogonal coordinates. The developed method is based on the principle of diffraction-based overlay with 1D and 2D built-in diffractive microstructure-sensors. Mathematical modeling and results of experimental test writings of such diffractive microstructure sensors are described. The efficiency of using these types of build-in sensors for the writing errors estimation for CGHs is demonstrated.

Oxide composition and period variation of thermochemical LIPSS on chromium films with different thickness

In this paper, we present the results of thermochemical LIPSS formation on a chromium film with a thickness in the range of 28-350 nm induced by femtosecond laser radiation (λ = 1026 nm, ν = 200 kHz, τ = 232 fs). The period, height, morphology and chemical composition of TLIPSS as a function of the metal film thickness and focusing configuration are investigated. The growth of TLIPSS period from 678 nm to 950 nm with increasing thickness of the film has been explained by a formation of oxides with different stoichiometry composition. So, the CrO₂ oxide prevails in the composition for the case of TLIPSS formed on thin films which have the minimal period, whereas Cr₂O₃ oxide is dominant in the case of TLIPSS formed on thick chromium films which have the maximal period value. The results obtained are in agreement with numerical modeling of a period defined by the interference between an incident radiation and a scattered one from a single oxide ridge with a different chemical composition.

Zone-boundary optimization for direct laser writing of continuous-relief diffractive optical elements

Enhancing the diffraction efficiency of continuous-relief diffractive optical elements fabricated by direct laser writing is discussed. A new method of zone-boundary optimization is proposed to correct exposure data only in narrow areas along the boundaries of diffractive zones. The optimization decreases the loss of diffraction efficiency related to convolution of a desired phase profile with a writing-beam intensity distribution. A simplified stepped transition function that describes optimized exposure data near zone boundaries can be made universal for a wide range of zone periods. The approach permits a similar increase in the diffraction efficiency as an individual-pixel optimization but with fewer computation efforts. Computer simulations demonstrated that the zone-boundary optimization for a 6 microm period grating increases the efficiency by 7% and 14.5% for 0.6 microm and 1.65 microm writing-spot diameters, respectively. The diffraction efficiency of as much as 65%-90% for 4-10 microm zone periods was obtained experimentally with this method.

Polar coordinate laser pattern generator for fabrication of diffractive optical elements with arbitrary structure

A precision laser pattern generator for writing arbitrary diffractive elements was developed as an alternative to Cartesian coordinate laser/electron-beam writers. This system allows for the fabrication of concentric continuous-relief and arbitrary binary patterns with minimum feature sizes of less than 0.6 microm and position accuracy of 0.1 microm over 300-mm substrates. Two resistless technologies of writing on chromium and on amorphous silicon films were developed and implemented. We investigated limit characteristics by writing special test structures. A 58-mm f/1.1 zone plate written directly is demonstrated at a lambda/50 rms wave-front error corresponding to a 0.06-microm pattern accuracy. Several examples of fabricated diffractive elements are presented.
