[Mechanism of gambogic acid-induced apoptosis in Raji cells]

This study was purposed to explore the apoptotic effect of gambogic acid on Raji cells and the role of death inducer-obliterator 1 (DIO-1) in this process. Annexin V-fluorescein-isothiocyanate/propidium iodide was used to detect apoptosis of Raji cells. Western blot was used to determine the expressions of DIO-1, Bcl-xL, pro-caspase 3 and 2 activated subunits: P17 and P20. The subcellular localization of DIO-1 in untreated and treated Raji cells was checked by immunofluorescence and Hoechst 33258 double staining. The results showed that the Gambogic acid dose-dependently induced the apoptosis of Raji cells, downregulated the expression of Bcl-xL, upregulated the expressions of DIO-1 and pro-caspase 3, induced the cleavage of pro-caspase 3 and DIO nuclear translocation. It is concluded that gambogic acid induces the apoptosis of Raji cells through DIO-1 upregulation, nuclear translocation, Bcl-xL downregulation and caspase 3 activation.

[Clinical and experimental study of shengxue syrup in treating chronic aplastic anemia]

The Shengxue Syrup (SXS) composed of Chinese medicinal herbs for invigorating the function of Spleen and resplenishing the Kidney was used in treating 115 chronic aplastic anemia patients. The SXS group consisted of 67 patients. After the median 20 months treatment the total effective rate (TER) was 97.0%. The other group was SXS + testosterone group consisted of 48 patients. After median 17.5 month treatment the TER was 95.8%. The difference of TER between two groups was insignificant. The result of animal experiment showed that SXS could markedly enhance the hematopoietic stem cells as well as progenitor cells proliferation of bone marrow in mice.

Histopathological features of congenital fundus lesions in familial adenomatous polyposis

We report the light and electron microscopic findings for two lesions from two patients who died of complications of familial adenomatous polyposis. In the first case microscopy of a small (100 to 200 mu), uniformly dark lesion (the commonest type seen in this condition) showed enlarged retinal pigment epithelial cells with an increased number of pigment granules. This is consistent with the term "hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium", currently used to describe these lesions. In the second case we sectioned a larger (1000 to 1500 mu), oval, grey lesion from the posterior pole. The pigment epithelium was normal, but between it and outer retina was an unusual choristoma consisting largely of myelinated axons and astrocytes.
