Abstract
APSES (Asm1p, Phd1p, Sok2p, Efg1p, and StuAp) family transcription factors play crucial roles in various biological processes of fungi, however, their functional characterization in phytopathogenic fungi is limited. In this study, we explored the role of SsStuA, a typical APSES transcription factor, in the regulation of cell wall integrity (CWI), sclerotia formation and pathogenicity of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, which is a globally important plant pathogenic fungus. A deficiency of SsStuA led to abnormal phosphorylation level of SsSmk3, the key gene SsAGM1 for UDP-GlcNAc synthesis was unable to respond to cell wall stress, and decreased tolerance to tebuconazole. In addition, ΔSsStuA was unable to form sclerotia but produced more compound appressoria. Nevertheless, the virulence of ΔSsStuA was significantly reduced due to the deficiency of the invasive hyphal growth and increased susceptibility to hydrogen peroxide. We also revealed that SsStuA could bind to the promoter of catalase family genes which regulate the expression of catalase genes. Furthermore, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation was found to be increased in ΔSsStuA. In summary, SsStuA, as a core transcription factor involved in the CWI pathway and ROS response, is required for vegetative growth, sclerotia formation, fungicide tolerance and the full virulence of S. sclerotiorum.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the present situation of pelvic floor muscle strength, and to analyze the factors affecting pelvic floor muscle strength. Methods: The data of patients who were admitted into the general outpatient department of gynecology, Peking University People's Hospital from October 2021 to April 2022 were collected, and the patients who met the exclusion criteria were included in this cross sectional study. The patient's age, height, weight, education level, defecation way and defecation time, birth history, maximum newborn birth weight, occupational physical activity, sedentary time, menopause, family history and disease history were recorded by questionnaire. Morphological indexes such as waist circumference, abdomen circumference and hip circumference were measured with tape measure. Handgrip strength level was measured with grip strength instrument. After performing routine gynecological examinations, the pelvic floor muscle strength was evaluated by palpation with modified Oxford grading scale (MOS). MOS grade>3 was taken as normal group and ≤3 as decreased group. Binary logistic regression was used to investigate the related factors of deceased pelvic floor muscle strength. Results: A total of 929 patients were included in the study, and the average MOS grade was 2.8±1.2. By univariate analysis, birth history, menopausal time, defecation time, handgrip strength level, waist circumference and abdominal circumference were related to the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength (all P<0.05). By binary logistic regression analysis, the level of handgrip strength (OR=0.913, 95%CI: 0.883-0.945; P<0.001) was correlated with normal pelvic floor muscle strength; waist circumference (OR=1.025, 95%CI: 1.005-1.046; P=0.016), birth history (OR=2.224, 95%CI: 1.570-3.149; P<0.001), sedentary time> 8 hours (OR=2.073, 95%CI: 1.198-3.587; P=0.009) were associated with the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength. Conclusions: The level of handgrip strength is related to the normal pelvic floor muscle strength of females, while the waist circumference, birth history and sedentary time>8 hours are related to the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength of females. In order to prevent the decrease of pelvic floor muscle strength, it is necessary to carry out relevant health education, enhance exercise, improve the overall strength level, reduce daily sedentary time, maintain symmetry, and carry out comprehensive overall intervention to improve pelvic floor muscle function.

Abstract
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a necrotrophic phytopathogenic fungus that cross-talks with its hosts for control of cell-death pathways for colonization. Target of rapamycin (TOR) is a central regulator that controls cell growth, intracellular metabolism, and stress responses in a variety of eukaryotes, but little is known about TOR signaling in S. sclerotiorum. In this study, we identified a conserved TOR signaling pathway and characterized SsTOR as a critical component of this pathway. Hyphal growth of S. sclerotiorum was retarded by silencing SsTOR, moreover, sclerotia and compound appressoria formation were severely disrupted. Notably, pathogenicity assays of strains shows that the virulence of the SsTOR-silenced strains were dramatically decreased. SsTOR was determined to participate in cell wall integrity (CWI) by regulating the phosphorylation level of SsSmk3, a core MAP kinase in the CWI pathway. Importantly, the inactivation of SsTOR induced autophagy in S. sclerotiorum potentially through SsAtg1 and SsAtg13. Taken together, our results suggest that SsTOR is a global regulator controlling cell growth, stress responses, cell wall integrity, autophagy, and virulence of S. sclerotiorum. IMPORTANCE TOR is a conserved protein kinase that regulates cell growth and metabolism in response to growth factors and nutrient abundance. Here, we used gene silencing to characterize SsTOR, which is a critical component of TOR signaling pathway. SsTOR-silenced strains have limited mycelium growth, and the virulence of the SsTOR-silenced strains was decreased. Phosphorylation analysis indicated that SsTOR influenced CWI by regulating the phosphorylation level of SsSmk3. Autophagy is essential to preserve cellular homeostasis in response to cellular and environmental stresses. Inactivation of SsTOR induced autophagy in S. sclerotiorum potentially through SsAtg1 and SsAtg13. These findings further indicated that SsTOR is a global regulator of the growth, development, and pathogenicity of S. sclerotiorum in multiple ways.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes in percentage of GATA3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and mouse models. METHODS The nasal mucosa specimens were obtained from 6 AR patients and 6 control patients for detection of nasal mucosal inflammation. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were collected from 12 AP patients and 12 control patients to determine the percentages of Treg cells and GATA3+ Treg cells. In a C57BL/6 mouse model of AR, the AR symptom score, peripheral blood OVA-sIgE level, and nasal mucosal inflammation were assessed, and the spleen of mice was collected for detecting the percentages of Treg cells and GATA3+ Treg cells and the expressions of Th2 cytokines. RESULTS Compared with the control patients, AR patients showed significantly increased eosinophil infiltration and goblet cell proliferation in the nasal mucosa (P < 0.01) and decreased percentages of Treg cells and GATA3+ Treg cells (P < 0.05). The mouse models of AR also had more obvious allergic symptoms, significantly increased OVA-sIgE level in peripheral blood, eosinophil infiltration and goblet cell hyperplasia (P < 0.01), markedly lowered percentages of Treg cells and GATA3+ Treg cells in the spleen (P < 0.01), and increased expressions of IL-4, IL-6 and IL-10 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The percentage of GATA3+ Treg cells is decreased in AR patients and mouse models. GATA3+ Treg cells possibly participate in Th2 cell immune response, both of which are involved in the occurrence and progression of AR, suggesting the potential of GATA3+ Treg cells as a new therapeutic target for AR.

Abstract
The plant pathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum can survive on a wide range of hosts and cause significant losses on crop yields. FKH, a forkhead box (FOX)-containing protein, functions to regulate transcription and signal transduction. As a transcription factor (TF) with multiple biological functions in eukaryotic organisms, little research has been done on the role of FKH protein in pathogenic fungi. SsFkh1 encodes a protein which has been predicted to contain FOX domain in S. sclerotiorum. In this study, the deletion mutant of SsFkh1 resulted in severe defects in hyphal development, virulence, and sclerotia formation. Moreover, knockout of SsFkh1 lead to gene functional enrichment in mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway in transcriptome analysis and SsFkh1 was found to be involved in the maintenance of the cell wall integrity (CWI) and the MAPK signaling pathway. Yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays showed that SsFkh1 interacts with SsMkk1. In addition, we explored the conserved MAPK signaling pathway components, including Bck1, Mkk1, Pkc1, and Smk3 in S. sclerotiorum. ΔSsmkk1, ΔSspkc1, ΔSsbck1, and ΔSssmk3knockout mutant strains together with ΔSsmkk1com, ΔSspkc1com, ΔSsbck1com, and ΔSssmk3com complementation mutant strains were obtained. The results indicated that ΔSsmkk1, ΔSspkc1, ΔSsbck1, and ΔSssmk3 displayed similar phenotypes to ΔSsfkh1 in sclerotia formation, compound appressorium development, and pathogenicity. Taken together, SsFkh1 may be the downstream substrate of SsMkk1 and involved in sclerotia formation, compound appressorium development, and pathogenicity in S. sclerotiorum.

Abstract
Telemedicine, which integrates medicine, communication, engineering, information and other disciplines, is a hot emerging cross field in recent years. With the development of telecommunication technology and surgical robot, telesurgery is regarded as the "crown pearl" in telemedicine and has attracted more and more attention. As an extension of traditional surgery, telesurgery greatly extends the connotation and concept of surgery and embodies the great leap forward development of surgical technology. Despite the current limitations such as network delay, transparency of remote robot operation and team construction of surgeons, telesurgery has still formed a variety of innovative application scenarios and achieved rapid development in China in recent years. In view of the uneven distribution of medical resources in China and the epidemic of COVID-19 in the world, this paper puts forward the possible problems and solutions in the development of telesurgery, and looks forward to the feasibility of telesurgery technology in process of shifting the focus of medical and health care down to the community level, channeling resources accordingly.

Abstract
Autophagy is a highly conserved degrading process that is crucial for cell growth and development in eukaryotes, especially when they face starvation and stressful conditions. To evaluate the functions of Atg4 and Atg8 in mycelial growth, asexual and sexual development, and virulence in Cochliobolus heterostrophus, ΔChatg4 and ΔChatg8 mutants were generated by gene replacement. Strains deleted for ChATG4 and ChATG8 genes showed significant changes in vegetative growth and development of conidia and ascospores compared with the wild-type strain. The autophagy process was blocked and virulence was reduced dramatically in ΔChatg4 and ΔChatg8 mutants. In addition, deletion of ChATG4 and ChATG8 disordered Cdc10 subcellular localization and formation of septin rings. The direct physical interaction between ChAtg4 and ChAtg8 was detected by yeast two-hybrid assay, and ChAtg4-GFP was dispersed throughout the cytoplasm, although GFP-ChAtg8 appeared as punctate structures. All phenotypes were restored in complemented strains. Taken together, these findings indicate that ChATG4 and ChATG8 are crucial for autophagy to regulate fungal growth, development, virulence, and localization of septin in C. heterostrophus.

Abstract
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the notorious necrotrophic phytopathogenic fungus with wide distribution, is responsible for sclerotium disease in more than 600 plant species, including many economic crops such as soybean, oilseed rape, and sunflower. The compound appressorium is a crucial multicellular infection structure that is a prerequisite for infecting healthy tissues. Previously, the Forkhead-box family transcription factors (FOX TFs) SsFoxE2 and SsFKH1 were shown to play a key regulatory role in the hyphae growth, sexual reproduction, and pathogenicity of S. sclerotiorum. However, little is known about the roles of SsFoxE3 regulating growth and development and pathogenicity. Here, we report SsFoxE3 contributes to sclerotium formation and deletion of SsFoxE3 leads to reduced formation of compound appressoria and developmental delays. Transcripts of SsFoxE3 were greatly increased during the initial stage of infection and SsFoxE3 deficiency reduced virulence on the host, while stabbing inoculation could partially restore pathogenicity. The SsFoxE3 mutant showed sensitivity to H2 O2 , and the expression of reactive oxygen species detoxification and autophagy-related genes were reduced. Moreover, expression of SsAtg8 was also decreased during the infection process of the SsFoxE3 mutant. Yeast 1-hybrid tests suggested that SsFoxE3 interacted with the promoter of SsAtg8. Disruption of SsAtg8 resulted in a phenotype similar to that of the SsFoxE3 mutant. Comparative analysis of the level of autophagy in the wild type and SsFoxE3 mutant showed that N starvation-induced autophagy was reduced in the SsFoxE3 mutant. Taken together, our findings indicate that SsFoxE3 plays an important role in compound appressorium formation and is involved in transcriptional activation of SsAtg8 during infection by S. sclerotiorum.

Abstract
Elsinochromes (ESCs) are virulence factors produced by Elsinoë arachidis which is the cause of peanut scab. However, the biosynthesis pathway of ESCs in E. arachidis has not been elucidated and the potential pathogenic mechanism of E. arachidis is poorly understood. In this study, we report a high-quality genome sequence of E. arachidis. The size of the E. arachidis genome is 33.18Mb, which is comparable to the Ascomycota genome (average 36.91 Mb), encoding 9174 predicted genes. The self-detoxification family including transporters and cytochrome P450 enzymes were analysis, candidate effectors and cell wall degrading enzymes were investigated as the pathogenicity genes by using PHI and CAZy databases. Additionally, the E. arachidis genome contains 24 secondary metabolism gene clusters, in which ESCB1 was identified as the core gene of ESC biosynthesis. Taken together, the genome sequence of E. arachidis provides a new route to explore its potential pathogenic mechanism and the biosynthesis pathway of ESCs.

Abstract
AIMS Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is now the leading cause of death from infectious disease, thus rapid diagnostic and screening techniques for TB are urgently needed. METHODS AND RESULTS Here, a detection of MTB using multiple cross displacement amplification coupling with nanoparticles-based lateral flow device (MCDA-LFD) was developed and validated, targeting the specific sdaA gene. The whole detection procedure, including rapid genomic DNA extraction (15 min), amplification (30 min) and result reporting (2 min), was completed within 50 min. No cross-reaction with non-mycobacteria and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) strains was observed. The sensitivity of sdaA-MCDA-LFD, Xpert MTB/RIF assay and culture results was 81·6, 48·3 and 37·9%, respectively, in TB patients. Among positive culture samples, the sensitivity of sdaA-MCDA-LFD and Xpert MTB/RIF assay was 93·9% (31/33) and 81·8% (27/33), respectively. Among culture-negative samples, the sensitivity of sdaA-MCDA-LFD and Xpert MTB/RIF assay was 74·1% (40/54) and 27·8% (15/54), respectively. The specificity of sdaA-MCDA-LFD and Xpert MTB/RIF was 95·4% (62/65) and 100% (65/65) in clinical samples from non-TB patients. CONCLUSION The sdaA-MCDA-LFD assay was a rapid, simple, specific and sensitive TB diagnostic test. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The sdaA-MCDA-LFD assay holds promise for application as a useful point-of-care test to detect MTB, and will play an important role in controlling and preventing TB.

Abstract
Background:Clinical practice guidelines recommend that exercise is an essential component in the self-management of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). Attending supervised interventions requiring periodic medical center visits can be burdensome and patients may decline participation, whereas, effective home-based exercise interventions that do not need regular medical center visits are likely to be more accessible and acceptable for patients with AS. Recently, increasing evidences have been accumulated that the wearable devices could facilitate patients with inflammatory arthritis by giving exercise instructions and improving self-efficacy. Therefore, patients with AS may benefit from an effective technology-assisted home-based exercise intervention.Objectives:To investigate the efficacy of a comprehensive technology-assisted home-based exercise intervention on disease activity in patients with AS.Methods:This study was a 16-week assessor-blinded, randomized, waiting-list controlled trial (ChiCTR1900024244). Patients with AS were randomly allocated to the home-based exercise intervention group and the waiting-list control group. A 16-week comprehensive exercise program consisting of a moderate intensity (64%-76% HRmax) aerobic training for 30min on 5 days/week and a functional training for 60min on 3 days/week was given to patients in the intervention group immediately after randomization, with 1.5h training sessions for two consecutive days by a study physical therapist at baseline and Week 8. The aerobic exercise intensity was controlled by a Mio FUSE Wristband with a smartphone application. The functional training consisted of the posture training, range of motion exercises, strength training, stability training and stretching exercises. Patients in control group received standard care during the 16-week follow-up and started to receive the exercise program at Week 16. The primary outcome was ASDAS at Week 16. The secondary outcomes were BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI, ASAS HI, peak oxygen uptake, body composition and muscle endurance tests. The mean difference between groups in change from baseline was analyzed with the analysis of covariance.Results:A total of 54 patients with AS were enrolled (26 in intervention group and 28 in control group) and 46 (85.2%) patients completed the 16-week follow-up. The mean difference of ASDAS between groups in change from baseline to 16-week follow-up was −0.2 (95% CI, −0.4 to 0.003, P = 0.032), and the mean change from baseline was -0.4 (95% CI, -0.5 to -0.2) in the intervention group vs -0.1 (95% CI, -0.3 to 0.01) in the control group, respectively. Significant between-group differences were found between groups for BASDAI (−0.5 [95% CI, −0.9 to −0.2], P = 0.004), BASMI (−0.7 [95% CI, −1.1 to −0.4], P <0.001), BASFI (−0.3 [95% CI, −0.6 to 0.01], P=0.035), peak oxygen uptake (2.7 [95% CI, 0.02 to 5.3] ml/kg/min, P=0.048) and extensor endurance test (17.8 [95% CI, 0.5 to 35.2]s, P=0.044) at Week 16. Between-group differences were detected in ASAS HI (−0.9 [95% CI, −1.7 to −0.1], P=0.030), body fat percentage (−1.0 [95% CI, −2.0 to −0.01] %, P=0.048) and visceral adipose tissue (−4.9 [95% CI, −8.5 to −1.4] cm2, P=0.008) at Week 8, but not at Week 16. No significant between-group differences were detected in the total lean mass, time up and go test and the flexor endurance test during the follow-up.Conclusion:Comprehensive technology-assisted home-based exercise has been shown to have beneficial effects on disease activity, physical function, spinal mobility, aerobic capacity, and body composition as well as in improving fatigue and morning stiffness of patients with AS.References:[1]van der Heijde D, Ramiro S, Landewé R, et al. Abstract
The alterations induced in gut microbiota by tacrolimus may affect immune function and organ transplantation. Mice were treated with high-dose tacrolimus for 14 days. The fecal microbiota were analyzed by pyrosequencing the 16S rRNA genes, and the effect on metabolism was predicted using the sequence data. The subgroups of T cells in the serum, gut-associated lymphoid tissue, and draining lymph nodes were determined by flow cytometry. Tacrolimus treatment significantly altered the relative abundance of Allobaculum, Bacteroides, and Lactobacillus and CD4+ CD25hi FoxP3+ regulatory T cells in the colonic mucosa and the circulation. These were significantly increased after either tacrolimus treatment or treatment by fecal microbiota transfer from tacrolimus-treated donors. Further, treatment with low-dose tacrolimus plus fecal microbiota transfer from high-dose tacrolimus-altered mice increased skin allograft survival rate in a skin transplantation model. Thus, high-dose tacrolimus alters the compositions and taxa of the gut microbiota. Administration of these conditioned gut microbiota plus low-dose tacrolimus resulted in regulation of colonic and systemic immune responses and an increased allograft survival rate. This study demonstrated a new strategy for controlling allograft rejection by combining an immunosuppressive agent with gut microbiome transplantation.

Abstract
Individuals with the human neutrophil antigen (HNA)-3b/3b type can produce HNA-3a antibodies, which have been reported to cause severe, sometimes fatal transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). Our study aimed to determine the genotype frequency of HNA-3a/3b which will be helpful to estimate the potential risk for forming anti-HNA-3a, the clinically relevant antibody linked to TRALI in two different ethnic groups of southern China. Five hundred unrelated and healthy blood donors (284 male, 216 female; 300 Zhuangs, 200 Dongs) from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were simultaneously typed for the HNA-3 allele using a polymerase chain reaction sequence-based typing (PCR-SBT) method. Genotype frequencies of HNA-3a/3a, HNA-3a/3b and HNA-3b/3b were 51.7%, 39.7% and 8.6% in the Zhuang population, and 44.0%, 49.0% and 7.0% in the Dong population, respectively. Homozygous HNA-3b/3b genotype frequency among the Zhuang population (8.6%) was significantly higher than previously reported in African Americans (0.4%), Brazilians (3.6%) and English Caucasians (2.9%) (p < .05). And the HNA-3b/3b genotype frequency among the Dong population was higher than African Americans (0.4%) (p < .05). This study showed Chinese Zhuang and Dong populations possessed a higher frequency of HNA-3b/3b genotype, suggesting that they may be at greater risk for developing anti-HNA-3a alloantibodies that may cause severe cases of TRALI. A molecular-based identification of the HNA-3b/3b genotype in all multiparous female blood donors was suggested to reduce the risk of TRALI following plasma and whole blood allogeneic transfusions.

Abstract
Cupins form one of the most functionally diverse superfamilies of proteins, with members performing a wide range of catalytic, non-catalytic, and regulatory functions. HutD is a predicted bicupin protein that is involved in histidine utilization (Hut) in Pseudomonas species. Previous genetic analyses have suggested that it limits the upper level of Hut pathway expression, but its mechanism of action is unknown. Here, we have determined the structure of PfluHutD at 1.74 Å resolution in several crystallization conditions, and identified N-formyl-l-glutamate (FG, a Hut pathway intermediate) as a potential ligand in vivo. Abstract
PURPOSE Due to the improvement of thoracoscopic technology and surgeon's ability, plenty of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was treated by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). This study was designed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) and survival in II stage NSCLC patients following lobectomy, comparing VATS with thoracotomy. METHODS Between 2010 and 2012, 217 II stage NSCLC patients (VATS: 114 patients, OPEN: 103 patients) were enrolled in a long-standing, prospective observational lung cancer surgery outcomes study. Short-form 36 health survey (SF-36) and time to progression (TTP) were measured to evaluate the QOL and postoperative survival. RESULTS There were significant differences between the two groups in the preoperative radiation therapy and differentiation, and the VATS group had less postoperative complication, blood loss, intraoperative fluid administration, and shorter length of stay. Statistical analysis of SF-36 questionnaire revealed that VATS group score was higher on seven health dimensions: Bodily pain (BP), energy (EG), general health, physical functioning, mental health, SF, and role-physical (RP), but only BP, EG, and RP have statistical significance. Using survival analysis, there was no significant difference between VATS and OPEN group, in which the mean TTP of VATS group is 18.5 months, while OPEN group is 20 months. CONCLUSIONS VATS lobectomy tends to score higher on the QOL and functioning scales and has equivalent postsurgical survival compared with OPEN lobectomy for II stage nonsmall cell carcinoma patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The object of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis in children who underwent placement of intracranial ventricular shunts. METHODS In this paper, the authors report a systematic review and meta-analysis of infection rate for pediatric shunt implantation surgery. Randomized or non-randomized controlled trials for comparing the use of prophylactic antibiotics in intracranial ventricular shunt procedures with placebo or no antibiotics were included in the review. RESULTS Seven published reports of eligible studies involving 694 participants meet the inclusion criteria. Compared with the control group, antibiotic prophylaxis had made a significant difference in infection rate (RR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.38, 0.90, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Although current evidence demonstrates that antibiotic prophylaxis can lead to a significant reduction of the infection rate of shunt surgery, more evidence from advanced multi-center studies is needed to provide instruction for the use of prophylactic antibiotics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diaphragmatic dysfunction and its negative physiologic disadvantages are less commonly reported in patients with lung cancer video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy. The aim of this study was to investigate the outcomes of this complication on pulmonary function and quality-of-life in patients following video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate potential benefits on pulmonary function and quality-of-life with normal diaphragmatic motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted in 64 patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer after video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy. The population were divided into groups 1 (with diaphragmatic paralysis, n = 32) and group 2 (without diaphragmatic paralysis, n = 32) according diaphragmatic motion after postoperatively 6 months. And then, we investigated the difference between the two groups on pulmonary function and quality-of-life. RESULTS (1) At 6 months after resection, the patients in group 1 had lost 25% of their preoperative forced expiratory volume in the 1 s (FEV 1 ) (P < 0.001), and the patients in group 2 had lost 15% of their preoperative FEV 1 (P < 0.001). And the other spirometric variables in group 1 were significantly worse than that of group 2 (P < 0.001). (2) The most frequently reported postoperative symptoms were fatigue, coughing, dyspnea, and thoracotomy pain in two groups. Of all the symptom scales, only the dyspnea scale showed a significant difference which subject has a higher proportion and scale compared to control. CONCLUSIONS The present study indicates that unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis following video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy caused adverse effects on postoperative pulmonary function and quality-of-life.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim was to evaluate the safety, feasibility and efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous interstitial brachytherapy using radioactive iodine-125 ( 125 I) seeds for the treatment of lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Included in this study were 45 male and 35 female patients aged 52-85 years (mean 72-year) who were diagnosed with lung cancer. Of the 80 cases of lung cancer, 38 were pathologically confirmed as squamous cell carcinoma, 29 as adenocarcinoma, 2 as small cell lung cancer, and 11 as metastatic lung cancer. Percutaneous interstitial implantation of radioactive 125 I seeds was performed under CT guidance. The treatment planning system was used to reconstruct three-dimensional images of the tumor to determine the quantity and distribution of 125 I seeds to be implanted. Under CT guidance, 125 I seeds were embedded into the tumor, with the matched peripheral dose set at 100-130 Gy. Follow-up CT scan was done in 2-month to explore the treatment efficacy. RESULTS The procedure was successful in all patients. No major procedure-associated death occurred. The duration of follow-up was 6-month. Complete response (CR) was seen in 38 cases (47.5%), partial response (PR) in 27 cases (33.75%), stable disease (SD) in 10 cases (12.5%), and progressive disease in 5 cases (6.25%), with a local control rate (CR + PR + SD) of 93.75%. The 2-, 4- and 6-month overall response rate (CR + PR) was 78%, 83% and 81%, respectively. CONCLUSION Implantation of CT-guided 125 I seeds is a safe and effective alternative option for the treatment of lung cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) is becoming a selective treatment of esophageal cancer; however, it's a complex and technically demanding surgical operation. MIE can be performed in high volume centers in a variety of ways using different techniques. Transthoracic staplers have traditionally been used in open transthoracic Ivor Lewis Esophagectomy (ILE) with good success. An investigation of the safety and utility of transthoracic stapler via two ports on thorax for esophageal anastomosis in minimally invasive ILE is reviewed. METHODS Patients of esophageal cancer were selected between November 2012 and July 2014. All the patients received minimally invasive (MIE) or open transthoracic ILE. Transthoracic stapler for MIE anastomosis was performed through the major port located at subaxillary region. Patients' demographics, indications for esophagectomy, perioperative treatments, intraoperative data, postoperative complications, hospital length of stay, 7 and in-hospital mortality were evaluated. RESULTS Totally, 63 consecutive patients underwent MIE or ILE. All the patients were Han with a mean age of 60 years (52-74). The indication of surgery is esophageal cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma was defined by pathologist before operation. None of the patients had neoadjuvant chemotherapy or radiation. All the MIE patients were no conversions to open thoracotomy or laparotomy. Mean operative time was 4.5 h. One patient (3.03%) suffered postoperative pneumonia, no leak from the gastric conduit staple line or esophageal anastomoses, no postoperative complication required surgical intervention was observed. The median hospital length of stay was 13 days (range 7-18). There were no in-hospital mortalities. CONCLUSIONS In our study, transthoracic stapler through the major port at subaxillary seems technically feasible and safe for minimally invasive ILE with comparable morbidity and oncologic data to open.

Abstract
Graphene/metal heterojunctions are ubiquitous in graphene-based devices and, therefore, have attracted increasing interest of researchers. Indeed, the literature on the field reports apparently contradictory results about the effect of a metal on graphene doping. Here, we elucidate the effect of metal nanostructuring and oxidation on the metal work function (WF) and, consequently, on the charge transfer and doping of graphene/metal hybrids. We show that nanostructuring and oxidation of metals provide a valid support to frame WF and doping variation in metal/graphene hybrids. Chemical vapour-deposited monolayer graphene has been transferred onto a variety of metal surfaces, including d-metals, such as Ag, Au, and Cu, and sp-metals, such as Al and Ga, configured as thin films or nanoparticle (NP) ensembles of various average sizes. The metal-induced charge transfer and the doping of graphene have been investigated using Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and corroborated by Raman spectroscopy and plasmonic ellipsometric spectroscopy. We show that when the appropriate WF of the metal is considered, without any assumption, taking into account WF variations by nanostructure and/or oxidation, a linear relationship between the metal WF and the doping of graphene is found. Specifically, for all metals, nanostructuring lowers the metal WF. In addition, using gold as an example, a critical metal nanoparticle size is found at which the direction of charge transfer, and consequently graphene doping, is inverted.

Abstract
For thoracoscopic upper lobectomies, most cutting endostaplers must be inserted through the camera port when using a two-port approach. Access to the hilar vasculature through only the utility port remains a challenge. In this study, we describe a procedure to access the hilar vasculature without transferring the endostapler site during a thoracoscopic right upper lobectomy. A 2.5-cm utility anterior incision was made in the fourth intercostal space. The posterior mediastinal visceral pleura were dissected to expose the posterior portion of the right upper bronchus and the anterior trunk of the right pulmonary artery. The pleura over the right hilar vasculature were then peeled with an electrocoagulation hook. The anterior trunk of the right pulmonary artery was then transected with a cutting endostapler through the utility port firstly. This crucial maneuver allowed the endostapler access to the right upper lobe pulmonary vein. The hilar structures were then easily handled in turn. This novel technique was performed successfully in 32 patients, with no perioperative deaths. The average operation time was 120.6 min (range 75-180 min). This novel technique permits effective control of the hilar vessels through the utility port, enabling simple, safe, quick and effective resection.

Abstract
The video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was first introduced to thoracic surgeons of China in 1990s. In the past 20 years, the VATS technique has been extensively applied in treatment of lung cancer all over the land. By the end of 2014, more than 300 thousands thoracic surgeries per year are operated that nearly half of these are finished by VATS. As China has been one of the most important forces to fight against lung cancer in the world, it is essential and inevitable to understand the status and future of China’s VATS in the treatment of lung cancer during this historic period.

Abstract
A mandrel winding method, which can realize remarkable homogeneous plastic deformation at room temperature for various metallic glasses, is applied to characterize plastic flow units and study their relationship with macroscopic deformations and relaxations. The method can provide information on the activation energy, activation time, size, intrinsic relaxation time, distribution, and density of flow units. We find the plasticity of a metallic glass can be controlled through modulating the features of flow units. The results have benefits for better understanding the structural origins of deformations and relaxations, and for designing metallic glasses with improved performances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. As CUGBP1 may also play a great role in tumor genesis and deterioration, the purpose of this study was to detect the expression of CUGBP1 mRNA and CUGBP1 and assess the prognostic significance of CUGBP1 in NSCLC. METHODS Expression of CUGBP1 mRNA and CUGBP was detected by Semi-quantitative PCR and Immunohistochemistry, respectively, from 57 NSCLC patients. The percentage of CUGBP1 mRNA and CUGBP1 expression was correlated with clinical characteristics using χ (2) test. The prognostic significance was assessed by univariate and multivariate analyses in the Cox hazard model. RESULTS The expression of CUGBP1 mRNA and CUGBP1 was over-expressed in cancer group and was correlated with TNM stage and Differentiation. By both univariate and multivariate survival analyses, CUGBP1 expression (P = 0.0074, HR = 3.701, 95 % CI 1.420-9.648), TNM-stage (HR = 4.043, 95 % CI 2.098-7.794) and age (HR = 3.207, 95 % CI 1.544-6.664) were noted to be independent indicators of a shorter postsurgical survival. CONCLUSIONS The expression of CUGBP1 independently predicted a shorter postsurgical survival in NSCLC.

Abstract
PURPOSE Current knowledge of the prognostic biomarkers of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with gefitinib is poor. NSE mRNA as a potential prognostic biomarker of the effectiveness of gefitinib treatment in NSCLC, especially in the Chinese population, needs to be further validated. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 168 advanced NSCLC patients treated with gefitinib between May 2006 and July 2010. NSE mRNA was measured using quantitative RT-PCR analysis for correlation with the clinical outcomes. RESULTS We found that NSE mRNA expression was inversely correlated with sensitivity to gefitinib in NSCLC patients. Patients without elevated NSE mRNA had a more RR (CR + RR) 45.1 % than elevated 18.9 % (P = 0.0005). Moreover, the time to progression was 6.0 versus 4.2 months, respectively. Log-rank test was marginally significant (χ(2) = 12.11, P = 0.0007) and Cox multivariate analysis revealed that NSE mRNA (HR = 3.076; 95 % CI 1.943-4.870; P < 0.0001) was an independent prognostic factor of NSCLC patients in the Chinese population. CONCLUSION For NSCLC patients treated with gefitinib, patients without elevated NSE mRNA had a better prognosis than those with elevated NSE mRNA. Pretreatment NSE mRNA holds great potential as a prognostic biomarker in advanced NSCLC. Therefore, it is proposed that NSE mRNA should be routinely detected to screen patients who are more likely to benefit from gefitinib-based treatment.
