Low-Temperature Oxidation of Methane on Rutile TiO2(110): Identifying the Role of Surface Oxygen Species

Understanding the microkinetic mechanism underlying photocatalytic oxidative methane (CH4) conversion is of significant importance for the successful design of efficient catalysts. Herein, CH4 photooxidation has been systematically investigated on oxidized rutile(R)-TiO2(110) at 60 K. Under 355 nm irradiation, the C-H bond activation of CH4 is accomplished by the hole-trapped dangling OTi- center rather than the hole-trapped Ob- center via the Eley-Rideal reaction pathway, producing movable CH3• radicals. Subsequently, movable CH3• radicals encounter an O/OH species to form CH3O/CH3OH species, which could further dissociate into CH2O under irradiation. However, the majority of the CH3• radical intermediate is ejected into a vacuum, which may induce radical-mediated reactions under ambient conditions. The result not only advances our knowledge about inert C-H bond activation but also provides a deep insight into the mechanism of photocatalytic CH4 conversion, which will be helpful for the successful design of efficient catalysts.

Regulation of Hard Segment Cluster Structures for High-performance Poly(urethane-urea) Elastomers

Elastomers are widely used in daily life; however, the preparation of degradable and recyclable elastomers with high strength, high toughness, and excellent crack resistance remains a challenging task. In this report, a polycaprolactone-based poly(urethane-urea) elastomer is presented with excellent mechanical properties by optimizing the arrangement of hard segment clusters. It is found that long alkyl chains of the chain extenders lead to small and evenly distributed hard segment clusters, which is beneficial for improving mechanical properties. Together with the multiple hydrogen bond structure and stress-induced crystallization, the obtained elastomer exhibits a high strength of 63.3 MPa, an excellent toughness of 431 MJ m-3 and an outstanding fracture energy of 489 kJ m-2, while maintaining good recyclability and degradability. It is believed that the obtained elastomer holds great promise in various application fields and it contributes to the development of a sustainable society.

Polyimide-based porous carbon and cobalt nanoparticle composites as high-performance electromagnetic wave absorbers

This study successfully utilized a straightforward approach, choosing liquid-liquid phase separation to build a porous structure and synthesize composite absorbers based on polyimide-based porous carbon and cobalt nanoparticles (designated as PPC/Co-700 and PPC/Co-800). A fine porous structure was achieved as a result of the excellent heat resistance of polyimide resulting in an excellent electromagnetic wave absorption ability of PPC/Co composites. The results obtained clearly indicated that PPC/Co-700 and PPC/Co-800 exhibit a porous structure with coral-like pores, enhancing both impedance matching properties and microwave attenuation abilities. This improvement in impedance matching conditions and dissipation capability is attributed to the synergistic effect of dielectric loss induced by carbon and magnetic loss induced by Co nanoparticles. PPC/Co-700 showed the strongest absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss of -59.85 dB (30 wt% loading, thickness of 3.42 mm) and an effective absorption bandwidth (EABW, RL ≤ -10 dB) of 6.24 GHz (30 wt% loading, thickness of 2.78 mm). Therefore, this work provides a facile strategy for the development of a promising absorbing material with outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption performance.

Probing the functional hotspots inside protein hydrophobic pockets by in situ photochemical trifluoromethylation and mass spectrometry

Due to the complex high-order structures and interactions of proteins within an aqueous solution, a majority of chemical functionalizations happen on the hydrophilic sites of protein external surfaces which are naturally exposed to the solution. However, the hydrophobic pockets inside proteins are crucial for ligand binding and function as catalytic centers and transporting tunnels. Herein, we describe a reagent pre-organization and in situ photochemical trifluoromethylation strategy to profile the functional sites inside the hydrophobic pockets of native proteins. Unbiased mass spectrometry profiling was applied for the characterization of trifluoromethylated sites with high sensitivity. Native proteins including myoglobin, trypsin, haloalkane dehalogenase, and human serum albumin have been engaged in this mild photochemical process and substantial hydrophobic site-specific and structure-selective trifluoromethylation substitutes are obtained without significant interference to their bioactivity and structures. Sodium triflinate is the only reagent required to functionalize the unprotected proteins with wide pH-range tolerance and high biocompatibility. This "in-pocket" activation model provides a general strategy to modify the potential binding pockets and gain essential structural insights into the functional hotspots inside protein hydrophobic pockets.

Speciation analysis and toxicity evaluation of arsenolipids-an overview focusing on sea food

Arsenic, which can be divided into inorganic and organic arsenic, is a toxic metalloid that has been identified as a human carcinogen. A common source of arsenic exposure in seafood is arsenolipid, which is a complex structure of lipid-soluble organic arsenic compounds. At present, the known arsenolipid species mainly include arsenic-containing fatty acids (AsFAs), arsenic-containing hydrocarbons (AsHCs), arsenic glycophospholipids (AsPLs), and cationic trimethyl fatty alcohols (TMAsFOHs). Furthermore, the toxicity between different species is unique. However, the mechanism underlying arsenolipid toxicity and anabolism remain unclear, as arsenolipids exhibit a complex structure, are present at low quantities, and are difficult to extract and detect. Therefore, the objective of this overview is to summarize the latest research progress on methods to evaluate the toxicity and analyze the main speciation of arsenolipids in seafood. In addition, novel insights are provided to further elucidate the speciation, toxicity, and anabolism of arsenolipids and assess the risks on human health.

Photocatalytic ethane conversion on rutile TiO2(110): identifying the role of the ethyl radical

Oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (C2H6, ODHE) is a promising approach to producing ethene (C2H4) in the chemical industry. However, the ODHE needs to be operated at a high temperature, and realizing the ODHE under mild conditions is still a big challenge. Herein, using photocatalytic ODHE to obtain C2H4 has been achieved successfully on a model rutile(R)-TiO2(110) surface with high selectivity. Initially, the C2H6 reacts with hole trapped OTi- centers to produce ethyl radicals , which can be precisely detected by a sensitive TOF method, and then the majority of the radicals spontaneously dehydrogenate into C2H4 without another photo-generated hole. In addition, parts of the radicals rebound with diversified surface sites to produce C2 products via migration along the surface. The mechanistic model built in this work not only advances our knowledge of the C-H bond activation and low temperature C2H6 conversion, but also provides new opportunities for realizing the ODHE with high C2H4 efficiency under mild conditions.

Robust reverse-electrowetting based energy harvesting on slippery surface

Reversed-electrowetting based droplet electricity generator (REWOD-DEG) shows merits in high power densities, tunable output formats, and wide adaptability to diverse mechanical energies. However, the surface charge trapping and dielectric failure, which are also common challenges for electrowetting system, hinders the development of reliable REWOD-DEGs for long-term running. We innovatively introduce a slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (SLIPS) into REWOD-DEG. Benefits from the significant inhibitory effect for surface charge trapping and ambient contamination, self-healing characteristic given by SLIPS, and robust reversed-electrowetting based energy harvesting were achieved. The SLIPS enhanced REWOD-DEG experienced 100 days of intermittent energy harvesting without deterioration. In addition, the device shows robust performances when exposed to a variety of extreme working conditions, like low temperature, pH, humidity, fouling, and even scratching. This work may address the core application challenges of REWOD based devices, and inspire the development of other robust droplet-based electricity generators.
