Comparative analysis of regulating characteristics between air-ring flow regulating valve and center butterfly valve

In this study, a novel air-ring flow regulating valve was proposed to reduce the flow resistance caused by valve structural pressure drop in fluid transportation pipeline system. The regulating characteristics at different valve openings were analyzed by numerical method and the results were compared with the center butterfly valve which is most widely applied in fluid transportation pipeline system. Besides, an experimental system was designed to validate the numerical model in the present study. The results indicated that the simulation results agree well with experimental data. The resistance coefficient of the air-ring flow regulating valve is smaller than that of the center butterfly valve when the valve opening is greater than 67%, and the resistance coefficient is reduced by up to 100% as the valve is fully opened. Both valves maintain approximately equal percentage flow characteristics, the deviation in relative flow coefficient is small. In addition, the wall shear stress of the air-ring flow regulating valve is much smaller than that of the center butterfly valve at the same valve opening, and the maximum velocity in the pipeline system is always smaller than that of the center butterfly valve, which significantly reduces valve surface abrasive erosion and thus prolongs its service life.

Optimal stereotactic body radiotherapy dosage for hepatocellular carcinoma: a multicenter study

BACKGROUND

The optimal dose and fractionation scheme of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear due to different tolerated liver volumes and degrees of cirrhosis. In this study, we aimed to verify the dose-survival relationship to optimize dose selection for treatment of HCC.

METHODS

This multicenter retrospective study included 602 patients with HCC, treated with SBRT between January 2011 and March 2017. The SBRT dosage was classified into high dose, moderate dose, and low dose levels: SaRT (BED10 ≥ 100 Gy), SbRT (EQD2 > 74 Gy to BED10 < 100 Gy), and ScRT (EQD2 < 74 Gy). Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), local control (LC), and intrahepatic control (IC) were evaluated in univariable and multivariable analyses.

RESULTS

The median tumor size was 5.6 cm (interquartile range [IQR] 1.1-21.0 cm). The median follow-up time was 50.0 months (IQR 6-100 months). High radiotherapy dose correlated with better outcomes. After classifying into the SaRT, SbRT, and ScRT groups, three notably different curves were obtained for long-term post-SBRT survival and intrahepatic control. On multivariate analysis, higher radiation dose was associated with improved OS, PFS, and intrahepatic control.

CONCLUSIONS

If tolerated by normal tissue, we recommend SaRT (BED10 ≥ 100 Gy) as a first-line ablative dose or SbRT (EQD2 ≥ 74 Gy) as a second-line radical dose. Otherwise, ScRT (EQD2 < 74 Gy) is recommended as palliative irradiation.

Procyanidin A2, a polyphenolic compound, exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activity in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells

Procyandin A2 (PCA2) is a polyphenolic compound which is isolated from grape seeds. It has been reported that PCA2 exhibits antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects, but its molecular mechanism is still poorly understood. This study tests the hypothesis that PCA2 suppresses lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation and oxidative stress through targeting the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways in RAW264.7 cells. PCA2 (20, 40, 80 μM) exhibited no significant cytotoxicity in RAW264.7 cells and showed an inhibitory effect on an LPS-induced nitrite level. Pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), nitric oxide (NO), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were suppressed by PCA2 with a concentration range of 0–80 μM. The mRNA levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were inhibited by PCA2 (80 μM). The hallmark-protein expression of the NF-κB (p-IKKα/β, p-IκBα, and p-p65) and MAPK (p-p38, p-JNK, and p-ERK) pathways were decreased by PCA2 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. In addition, immunofluorescence results indicated that PCA2 (80 μM) promoted the translocation of NF-κB/p65 from the cytoplasm into the nucleus. PCA2 upregulated the expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1 and downregulated the expression of Keap-1. Simultaneously, PCA2 (80 μM) reversed LPS-induced Nrf2 translocation from the nucleus into the cytoplasm. Collectively, PCA2 protect cells against the damage from inflammation and oxidative injury, which suggest a potential therapeutic strategy for inflammatory and oxidative stress through targeting NF-κB, MAPK, and Nrf2 pathways in RAW264.7 cells.

A microcosm study on persulfate oxidation combined with enhanced bioremediation to remove dissolved BTEX in gasoline-contaminated groundwater

The combination of persulfate (PS) oxidation with enhanced bioremediation (EBR) is a potential trend in remediating organic-contaminated groundwater. However, the impacts of PS on EBR presented in the transition zone between PS oxidation zone and EBR zone need further study. To better characterize the impacts and provide available indicators, PS oxidation and EBR with nitrate amended were performed through the microcosm experiments to remove dissolved benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (denoted as BTEX) in gasoline-saturated groundwater. The results indicated that PS oxidation combined with EBR almost completely removed BTEX with the ratio of > 93% over the experiments, which is better than PS oxidation (54-97%) but still worse than EBR (100%). The removal velocities of BTEX in EBR, PS oxidation, and PS oxidation combined with EBR were 0.94, 0.1-0.16, and 0.1-0.54 mg/L/d, respectively. High concentration of PS, along with high-strength activation, made the pH decrease to 3.3-4.4 and the Eh increase to 141-203 mV, thus greatly inhibited microbial activities as well. In such circumstances, oxygen and nitrate could not be significantly used as electron acceptors by microbials. To reduce the impacts of PS oxidation on EBR, the PS/BTEX molar ratio of < 6 and the PS/Fe²⁺ molar ratio of > 1 may be appropriate in transition zone. The hydro-chemical indicators, including pH, Eh, and availability of electron acceptors such as oxygen and nitrate, could reflect the impacts of PS oxidation on bioprocesses. During in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), PS injection and PS activation by Fe²⁺ should be managed for decreasing the impacts on EBR, based on the PS/BTEX and PS/Fe²⁺ molar ratios.
